Paul has just never looked at a lot of cheaper cd-players because most of those only have analogue outputs. In the early time of cd almost none had a digital output because people didn't use external DACs yet or digitally prepared amplifiers.

In his defense, he was probably thinking about Walmart (GPX/Polaroid/Memorex/etc) DVD players, not CD players. Don't think I've seen a standalone component CD player in stores since the 90s, ie over 20 years, other than GPX grade "boom" boxes or blister packed portable CD players.
Most low cost DVD and BluRay payers I've seen do have an optical and or coax digital output, though a very few may not.

Wouldn't call a '93 Sony cdp-c535 necessarily a cheaper player at the time, but once again, Paul not exactly knowing or truthful about what he talks. This and others in my older collection in fact have only rca/analog line outs, making an external dac useless. So please Paul in the future, more research before releasing these simply untrue statements. I do enjoy some of these videos, but increasingly finding that I need to be selective about content. Thanks

Actually many older CD players only had RCA outs as I learned when I was looking for a vintage 5 disc player a couple years ago. I was specifically looking for one with a digital out to use with an external DAC and discovered to my surprise that it was not as common a feature as I had remembered.

I picked up a late 90's Nad 5440 cd player off of craigslist because it had a volume-controlled output that I could go directly to a tube amp and then speakers. Recently I decided to run it through my main system and connected the digital out to my Schiit dac and was amazed at the improvement the modern dac (and better amp and speakers probably) made to the sound.

Yes. The cd player produces a pcm signal ... only to connect between hifi items... Even if you had a coax or toslink output, you still only have the pcm signal (produced by dac in your cd player). So sending througt the two phonos will not make a big difference. You cannot connect from toslink to an extern dac anyway, from a cd player you always only have a pcm signal produced in the intern dac in the cd player ... (big misunderstanding in video here...)

Yes, among some others Sony DVD/Blue Ray players (SACD/CD capability) have an HDMI Audio output connection. Connecting that HDMI outlet to a Digital Interface which has an HDMI input and an i2s output to a DAC with an i2s input accomplishes that task.
Available through ebay and at audiophonics.
This arrangement has been reported to work by audiophiles.

I would qualify that saying, "most CD players made after 1992 or so" have a digital output. Those made before then, often did not. Most people will not be using such vintage gear unless they happened to own it and keep it all these years. I still have my old circa 1992 Sony and even an older Phillips Magnavox and they are still going strong. The Phillips has a DAC chip that many seemed to think was pretty good, a cut above most back then.

I would be more interested in intercepting the I2S signal going to the internal DAC en feeding that directly to an external dac so you don't have to use s/pdif and consequently can use the better clock in the external DAC, which s/pdif doesn't support because it as a multiplexed signal.

Incidentally, you don't need a digital output. A Dragonfly DAC [ really small-flashdrive size (!!), is really nice and not overly expensive for how well it performs (even their least expensive black version is great). it uses a USB input with a headphone jack output that can be easily adapted to RCA plugs. I use one on the headphone audio output of my computer to feed into a decent audio amp and speakers. The sound is excellent even using a computer cd drive.

I use the coax outputs of both the Sony and the Samsung into the two digital inputs on my integra receiver. I also use the analog RCA outputs from my Sony DVD player into my amp with no digital inputs. That way I can use the two amps to drive different speakers, even at the same time if I want to. Paul, your explanation just discusses CDs where the digital stream can be output to a DAC. However, if one's CD player also plays SACDs, then you cannot simply output the digital stream to a conventional DAC of your choice. Rather you need some type of special output from the player to a DAC that can accommodate this special cable. I think you call this an I-squared S input on your Direct Stream DAC. What is misleading is that in order to play SACDs, you just can't pick a DAC off the shelf and expect it to read SACDs from your SACD player. With my McIntosh MCD 600 SACD/CD player I cannot output a SACD digital stream to the DAC of my choice--I cannot use your Direct Stream DAC. No ! I must use the inferior internal DAC in the 600 for SACDs. That's a real bummer since the audio from a SACD disc is typically superior if you don't have to use the mediocre internal DAC. I've never understood why. I think there are some legalities involved with Sony/Phillips. Anyway, buyers of SACD players should be aware of this prior to purchase. Now, if you go with an all P.S. Audio front end, you won't have this problem (with the Direct Stream DAC). Paul has thought of everything !

One would think after 35years since the Mid 80's and 90's people would have upgraded their systems even from the poorest in society! This must be an indicator of how rough the economy has gotten when the Majority of the population is still using Obsolete Equipment and asking this type of Question! Maybe the Top 1/10% of the Ruling Class Elites would share some of their Wealth since they own 99% of it! I'm not holding my breath!

How can one DAC be better than another? The digital signal just codes for the waveform that is to be output. I assume that will always be the same waveform no matter what converter you use. Unlesss it is encoding it wrongly.

Paul and I have had our YT discussions about this very question, and ultimately he and I agree that at the very output of the DAC chip (whatever pins they may be), it should all be a faithful representation of the data as presented and all of them should be pretty much the same. The differences happen directly after that in the buffer and driver stages that feed the analog outputs of the overall "DAC" equipment. That is the Analog stage shaping the signal, not the DAC chip itself.

Manufacturers voice their DAC chips differently. AKMs, ESSs, Burr-Browns, and on and on all sound different from each other.

Paul, the Toyota is the car that has the abducted child.
Perhaps you did not read the alert beyond seeing the word "Toyota"?
If you did read the full alert, then it seems rather chilling that you would not want alerts to go out when children are abducted.
