    Those fasteners and plugs are amazing, and actually FUN to install. I couldn't believe it the first time that I used them. So easy and beautiful. I also appreciate your video showing how to remove screwed up installs. Much appreciated.

    Been watching your videos more and more. You really are a deck doctor! That hidden fastener gun is badass. I’m not a deck guy but have installed a good number of decks with multiple systems and that is by far the best one I’ve seen!

    There's nothing like snow in Tacoma. Most people go home good to see your working in it. So was I.

    Links to the gun and those collated plugs, the 5 shot hidden stainless fasteners? Links to the orange spacer block? You don't have any affiliate links?

    What about hidden fasteners for wood decks rather than composite?

    The Cortex Plug system is the worst. I have had nothing but problems with it. The drill bit that comes with the Cortex system creates a mushrooming effect (bump). I’ve read tvst it’s important to predrill before screwing the Cortex screws. It’s more work and doesn’t look good. Face screwing with the top lock screws is the best and most cost effective option. It’s unbelievable that “Dr Decks” recommends it.

    How well do those plugs stay put? They seem like a great idea unless I’m having to replace them a few years down the road.

    What’s the black stuff on to of your joist ?

    • @mrkngkhan
      @mrkngkhan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s butyl waterproof tape. Butyl tape provides a protective barrier against the moisture and condensation that seeps through the decking boards when it rains or snows, keeping your wood stronger for the long run

    Have you ever tried CAMO edge clips?

    • @jgrote
      @jgrote ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are my go-to and find them MILES better than concealoc especially because I can lay multiple boards out and cinch them before even driving a single screw so I can be sure they are straight, I haven't done fusionloc tho.

  • @jgrote
    @jgrote ปีที่แล้ว

    I've always wondered, why do you tape the blocking? You're not screwing anything into (most) of the blocking so you don't need the seal, so even with moisture it's not likely to rot any faster than any other exposed part of the deck if its treated lumber, and even if it does, it would take a lot of rot to compromise the function of the blocking which is to provide spacing and weight distribution.

    • @juzoli
      @juzoli ปีที่แล้ว

      On one hand, every horizontal surface can have standing water, so as those blockings.
      On the other hand, you are right that the blocking has a reduced risk of rot, mostly because there is an air gap above (if you install it lower, as you should).
      It is the least important thing to tape, but still helps. It depends if you are perfectionist, or maximizing return.

    • @jgrote
      @jgrote ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juzoli Thanks for the thought, I also thought one of the primary points of joist tape (especially butyl tape) is to seal up around the screw holes that penetrate below the treatment, which is where rot *really* occurs when the water gets in there (and was the main rot issue in the deck I'm replacing). Where I live (PNW) it rains all the time so I basically have to use pressure treated, so as long as the surface isn't broken it's not more likely to rot with the tape as without it mostly.

    • @juzoli
      @juzoli ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jgrote No, the tape is not for the hole itself. The problem is the tiny gaps between the boards, or the joist and the boards, where the dirt accumulates, and dries very slowly.
      The hole itself is not even exposed, as it is being shielded by the deck board above.
