They didn’t meet until years later…I always thought Kenny did background on the song, but he didn’t. This is my favorite song tied with Aaron Neville’s “Feels Like Rain “. Been loving it for over fifty plus years..
@@Defensewhiz It's good, but please come to Boston is one of the best songs of all time. I recently found out he wrote She is His only Need for Wynonna and IMO that is her best song.
An achingly beautiful song. The lyric about being up in the mountains in Denver (we'll throw "I love you" echoes down the canyons, and then lie awake at night until they come back around) is still one of the most romantic things I've ever heard.
OMG I love it when a kindred spirit hears something a loves it as much as I do!!! That has to be one of the best lines in a song ever!! That gives me an eargasm every time I hear it!!

Dave Loggins, born and raised in Tennessee, was inspired to write "Please Come to Boston" by a 1972 tour with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band which included stops in Boston, Denver and Los Angeles,[5] cities which were new to Loggins. He stated: The story is almost true, except there wasn't anyone waiting {here} so I made her up. In effect, making the longing for someone stronger. It was a recap to my first trip to each of those cities and out of innocence. That was how I saw each one. The fact of having no one to come home to made the chorus easy to write. Some 40 years later, I still vividly remember that night, and it was as if someone else was writing the song.[6]
The story basically is, he's a musician from Tennessee traveling around the country playing gigs and trying to make it big. (I still need to lean to, someone that I can sing to") He lives in these different places he's performing and he wants her to come be with him. Also, did you guys catch the double meaning in that line when he was in LA? "There's some _stars_ that fell from the sky and are living upon the _hill"_ ..He's in LA, near Hollywood Hills where all the movie stars live! I thought that was a very clever line! Dave Loggins is such a great talented singer/songwriter. So talented!
That last part about the hill is a very good point and brings some insight into the song. That makes me believe that he has been traveling around for years at this point and wherever he has been he has been trying to get the one he loves to join him. At this point in his life, he is in LA its probably been quite a few years since his first letter and he still wants her with him.
@@redred222 I tend to agree. But he is one of the artists where you can only think of one song. Then, when you hear another one, you go: "Oh yeah! I remember that!". I am one of those.
Actually Kenny Loggins is his cousin. One of my favorite songs ever, he was an incredible songwriter in the 70s and 80s. Also sings a beautiful duet with Anne Murray- “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do”.
I was in college in '76 and Loggins came to our student union and did an acoustic show for all of about 30 people. I didn't know who he was but as a broke kid in school, I went because it was free. Almost 50 years later, I remember him singing this song.
Dave was picked up hitchhiking near here by a girl I knew from high school. She was the preeminent hippie chick back then, long glowing hair, short short skirts when not in bell bottoms and tie-dyed. She invited him to the family lodge/lakeside cabin resort where he stayed a very long time. When he left he wrote a song called Girl From Knoxville, which is really about Rockwood, TN, he mentions in the 1st lines. Some believe she was also the muse for Please Come to Boston.
“We’ll throw "I love you" echoes down the canyon And then lie awake at night till they come back around….” That has to be one of the most romantic lines I have ever heard in a song. Just pure poetry!!! Brings tears to my eyes every time.
the way Dave Loggins could illustrate a story through words was phenomenal. .. "and there are some stars that fell from the sky, living up on the hill" (meaning aging, older movie stars, living up in the Hollywood Hills). This is some of his best work. The poetry of this song is just amazing.
It's a bittersweet but beautiful song. He loves her, she loves him but their relationship is never going to work. Even if she followed him in a few months he would be off on the next adventure. He's a rambler infected with wanderlust and she wants a settled life.
This song never fails to make me tear up. For the past 25-30 years I've been a ramblin guy like that and always wished someone would reply to me as she did, never happened tho. 😢 Absolutely beautiful song tho. ✌Peace✌
Dave was inspired to write "Please Come to Boston" by a 1972 tour with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band which included stops in Boston, Denver and Los Angeles, cities which were new to Loggins, a simply beautiful flowing song both in the melody and vocals I love it, Ty guys for enjoying this and reminding me of it I had forgotten it but I have it now downloaded to enjoy again after not hearing it for so long. AHHhhhhh... "Please Come To Boston" by Dave Loggins... NOW... This IS MUSIC!!!! A simple song, in general, but... the PICTURE that he paints... WHOOOYEEEeeeee... it's SOOOOO COMPLEX & wonderfully BEAUTIFUL that it reaches into your SOUL!!!! SO... THANK YOU for doin' THIS PARTICULAR TRACK!!!! Keep doin' YOU... Peace, Love, & Liberty. I love his reafference about Elvis and himself. "She's the number one fan of the man from Tennessee." Dave Loggins is from Tennessee too. Cannot believe it's been (49) years since this came out back in (1974). Awesome song and voice. Love it.
He never liked performing live and confessed that he was not cut out to be a rock star. He preferred songwriting and ended up being inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He wrote several hit songs for Alabama and numerous hits for Kenny Rogers, Wynonna, Tanya Tucker, Don Williams, 3 Dog Night, Reba and other country and pop artists. He also wrote "Augusta, " which CBS has used as it's theme during coverage of the Masters golf tournament since the early 1980's.
He finally made it , but he never got his girl. He went from living with some friends in Boston, to living in a house that looks out over the ocean. Hell of a story, hell of a song.
When I sit down and actually listen to the entirety and nuance of this song from my childhood, I always cry. It's the most beautiful sweet but heartbreaking story set to such heart-touching music. He never goes back to her despite she always being the one he wants to join him on whatever Don Quixote trip he's on. And she never stops loving him enough to say come home. The beautifully ethereal female voice that soars over his vocals when he's singing her words make you almost SEE her trying to reason with him. I love it, I just think this song is a perfect gem.
Thank you both for this reaction...This is one of my all time favorite songs...I`ve been jamming to this one since it was released in 1974 when I was 13...An awesome song.

My old buddy in the seventies favorite song. He just absolutely loved this tune. Shout out to Lynn Atkeisson in Olathe Kansas. I never really got it. Decent tune ,but for soft rock, it's gotta be Bread ,Lobo , and a few others. England Dan , Fogleberg.
He's a singer/musician, and that means endless traveling. He wanted her with him but she loves TN, rightfully so! It's a GREAT state. I should know! lol
Another thing I love about this 1974 song is the production. It's beautiful and perfectly layered. The seventies had such good production (except for punk, which was against good musicianship and against good production).
