LOVE this one! There's a great story behind it... In short, Donald Fagen befriended Rikki, the wife of one of his professors at Bard College. She was a writer who had grown up on the college’s campus and graduated from the university with a B.A. in Fine Arts a year before Fagen had enrolled there. The two found themselves at the same party, and despite Fagen’s knowledge that she was married - and the fact she was pregnant at the time - he gave Rikki his number. She never called...
Jay & Amber, you'll absolutely LOVE their "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie"!!!!! edit- Jeff Baxter (pre-Doobie Brothers) on electric guitar!! That's Jeff wearing the beret. Its Rikki Ducornet. Ducornet said they met at a college party, and even though she was both pregnant and married at the time, he gave her his number, although not in the same context as the song. Ducornet was intrigued by Fagen and tempted to call him, but she decided against it.
Another vote for Black Cow, Deacon Blues, Peg, FM, Aja, Pretzel Logic (Michael McDonald is one of the background singers), Caves of Altamira, Royal Scam, The Fez, Hey Nineteen, Josie, etc. They had lots of great musicians and background singes on their stuff.
I could reel off 2 dozen Steely Dan songs you need to hear. Kid Charlemagne is an absolute must, but I suggest saving it until later. My first pick would be "My Old School". it is one of their earlier songs, but so much fun with a rockin' tempo, great guitar licks, and awesome horn parts. But whatever you choose you can't go wrong with the Dan! Thoroughly enjoyed your reaction to this one. Have a great weekend, RSR Fam!
This song and another Steely Dan song called Peg was completing in the charts at the same time. They have many genres mixed together, but I would personally categorize them as EASY LISTENING.
omg my most favourite steely dan song. i know it's considered their most commercial hit but i absolutely love how silky smooth and melodic this song is! rikki is an actual woman whom songwriter donald fagen met at a party and was smitten. she was married and pregnant at the time so i love how it has a forlorn but yearning feel ❤ the intro is also an homage to the jazz classic "song for my father" by horace silver. p.s. the "number" y'all are wondering about is donald's phone number, which he gave her in the hope she'd call. she did not.
One thing I've noticed about you two is how Amber has really come a long way in how she can analyze a song and the different parts and different instruments while Jay just kinda flows along with "the groove' and giggles over the lyrics a bit! You two really play well off of each other and it's a lot of fun for us to watch. Keep it up. It's a great show. Deacon Blues and Black Cow. I'll patiently wait because there are a hundred other SD songs you could play as well. Cheers!
To me, Steely Dan created perfect records. The writing, the arrangement, the execution, the layering, the production--all perfect. Think about when you sit down to write something or draw something or cook something. How many times do you say "that was exactly what I was trying to do?" With Steely Dan, they just "nailed it." Aja is a perfect example of a perfect album.
@@someoneoncesaid6978 I grew up with this song and now I get why a bossa nova beat gets me going, along with a stand up bass, I can love a bad song with a stand up bass in it!
Steely Dan has so much variety, you would be wise to make sure you do them at least once a month. "Peg" would be a great one to do next, but "Aja" would really wow you.
You can't pin Steely Dan down but you always recognize some aspect of that Steely Dan sound immediately. Now that you know the magic of these guys,, with their huge catalog,, there are decades of absolute bliss ahead! It's like a craving... You've just started this journey and we couldn't be more excited for you!
That piano lick that's at the start was taken from jazz pianist Horace Silvers "Song for my father". They were huge jazz fans. You have not even scratched the surface when it comes to their huge catalog of incredible songs.🎶
This is a great song, part of their more pop repertoire. Next up try FM (No Static at All) for the beginnings of their more groove songs. Black Cow, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, Glamour Profession, My Rival, Babylon Sister, Hey Nineteen; these are all super groove/funky. So glad you're enjoying The Dan!
My favorite Steely Dan song. Now, don't kill the messenger. I listened to these guys on AM radio growing up in the 60's and 70's. I love them!! A friend of mine who is 11 years older than me asked me if I knew what a Steely Dan was. I had no idea...forgive me if this has already been talked about.
Another excellent reaction! The Dan are my favorite band because they check all the boxes: when I want to jam, when I want to chill, when I want to think, when I don't want to think, there's a Steely song to fit the need... They're raw and rough, but also smooth and highly technical... A couple of suggestions... Don't Take Me Alive rocks hard... Aja and Home At Last are as good as smooth jazz gets... Haitian Divorce and Caves of Altamira also show off these guys' (and the studio musicians') talent! There are very few meh songs in the entire Steely catalog, and almost all are end to end phenomenal! The pianist (and writer/composer) is Donald Fagen... You guys give me so much hope for the future of music! Keep up the great work!
Steely Dan were heavily influenced by Jazz music. That opening piano riff that you're grooving to is directly taken from a song called "Song For My Father" by Horace Silver, a pianist in the 50's and 60's.
They lifted the piano part from Horace Silver's "Song for my Father" and created their own story around that. The following song on Pretzel Logic is "Night by Night" which would be a perfect follow up to this one. All in all, this is a fairly offbeat album (even for Steely Dan) but one of my favorites along with Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy, and The Royal Scam. Thanks for the upload.
I'm a huge Steely Dan fan. It was so amazing growing up in the 70s and 80s and hearing awesome music like this on the radio. Great reaction Jay and Amber ❤❤❤❤❤
I've said it before, and always will, the 70's generation was the best ever! Jay and Amber would have been right there among us and fit right in. You guys do a great job with the homage for the actual musicianship of these guys that actually played and sang the music without all the electronics used now a days.
My favorite Steely Dan song (among many awesome songs of theirs). I was 14 when this came out, and it so reminds me of a great summer at the South Jersey Shore. Their music is so atmospheric, and this song always puts me in the best, most nostalgic mood. It's the same with Do It Again and My Old School ... all have such different sounds and create totally different moods, but they all bring me such joy.
Your interest in the music is what makes you the best of all reaction videos. Thanks y'all. This is my life, from my hippy parents in the 70s and being a latchkey kid in the late 70s and 80s. Our parents were breaking loose from their "greatest generation" parents. Women had freedom. Their kids are your parents. This is grandma's music.
I agree with you, you can’t put Steely Dan in a box/category, but my husband has a big playlist of 70’s/80’s songs and when one comes on from them I can tell it is them right away because they are so unique. Thanks for reacting to them guys, so glad you enjoyed it!❤❤
The "Bum Bum, Bum Bum" is lifted directly from Jazz pianist Horace Silver's song "Song for my Father". Rookie Don't Lose That Number, along with Josie and Time Out of Mind are my favorite hits, though all their bits are excellent. Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, ELO and Deep Purple were my favorite FM rock bands from the 1970s. I'll give Dave Edmunds an honorable mention. But, then Lynyrd Skynyrd comes to mind as well. What a decade!
Yes, some jazz-rock from Steely Dan! This was the biggest song chart wise landing at #4 in '74. Want to hear some whiskey drinking music checkout Deacon Blues next. Thanks. 😎
Love SteelyDan. Agree you can’t categorize them. Songs are all unique and rarely the same......but they’re recognizable every time. You always know it’s Steely Dan! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Walter and Donald did amazing things as Steely Dan and their masses of top studio musicians. This is one of their first hits and a great tune. You might want to try My z old School, Dr. Wu, and Kid Charlemagne .
My bestie in 9th and 10th grade and I both had a crush on a boy named Ricky. Every time I hear this song I think of them. Sadly, both passed away from drugs. But the song still brings back memories of those special years before responsibilities and early adulthood.
Steely Dan is one of my favorite 70s bands...you guys should check them out a lot more often!! Amber, the song you forgot about that you did was My Old School...one of my many favorites. You guys should do Peg next. There's also Josie, Kid Charlemagne, The Fez, and Haitian Divorce. Even after doing these you'll still have a lot more great music to listen to!!
Love this song from my childhood! My mom said it made her think of my dad because when they were dating it was popular and my dad's name is Eric, so she thought of him as Ricky I guess! Also do Peg next, one oy my faves by Steely Dan!
Pure 🔥. Too many great SD tunes to count. Check out Peg, Babylon Sisters, Josie, Deacon Blues, Black Friday, Time Out of Mind, Black Cow, and Kid Charlemagne. You could do Steely Dan Sundays and have classic tunes for the next year.
I'm with you, Jay -- "Do it Again" is my favorite Steely Dan song. The Eagles also admired Steely Dan's lyrics, and how they would take on uncomfortable subjects. Love the reaction, as always. Peace! 💗
Also love this one off of their album Pretzel Logic. That unmistakable Steely Dan sound, so smooth and creative. Donald Fagen has done some great solo stuff, you should react to 'New Frontier'-a great song by him-Colin Ward
We sure had the bestest music didn’t we guys?!?

Glamour Profession…don’t forget Glamour Profession
No static at all!
Time out of Mind .
I would include "Babylon Sisters".
You can hit random on any Steely Dan album and play a hit. :)
Their song Black Cow is a must!!!
Agree with this.
I only recently heard this song and agree 100%!!!
And Green Earing
They are their own genre.
Ambers so deep, thoughtful and pays attention to all details of every song. She gets it. Adding her to this channel was the best idea ever 😸
100% yes yes yes agree. She absorbs….. knows……
She sure does her homework
100% It just wouldn’t be so great without her (no offense J)!

Such a great vibe. This group was so strong in the 70s. Just plain awesome!

Steely Dan trying a Bossa Nova Esque Song. As a Brazilian , I love it
