they went back to basics with DESIGN, making it similar to g1, but the actual storyline of the games is connected to the prime series, as they have been officially stated to take place in the same universe, whereas g1 is a completely separate universe.
The Cybertron games are in no way contacted to any other comic/movie/television show. It is its own thing. The developers have said they try to keep most in common with the original G1.
