- A 17-year-old girl was hospitalized after falling off the Swing of the Century ride at Canada's Wonderland on Thursday.
York Region Paramedic Services told Global News they responded to the amusement park in Vaughan at around 2:30 p.m. after receiving a call that a person fell from a ride.
Paramedics said the victim was taken to a trauma centre, and police said they attended alongside paramedics. Safety officials say the machine was in proper working order.
Global's Mark Carcasole reports.

From Reddit:
The ride was Swing of the Century.
I was on one of the previous rides and this is my account of what occurred. This person was 100% horsing around, she had both legs extended onto an empty chair in front of her as the ride started. The safety bar buckle was unbuckled, I'm assuming for her to reach the seat in front of her with her feet. As the ride accelerated, the distance between the two seats spread, and she began slipping through her seat until through it completely. She hung onto her seat by her hands for around 2-3 rotations, as everyone screamed at the operators for the ride to stop. She fell around 20ft from the air as the ride was still spinning. Thank goodness she is conscious, let this be a lesson to everyone not to mess around during rides.
As a former op there, yeah, why wasn’t the operator paying attention if other ppl could notice that she was fooling around? Why didn’t the operator e-stop? Sounds like someone absolutely needs to get fired
@@leoloveslitstopping the ride might not have helped either way
It's a problem even on the kiddie version. I've seen younger kids horsing around the same way after the operator has their back turned even after being scolded by the ride operator.
It's sickening having grown up with these rides and seeing people horsing around like this to their detriment.
Sounds like a tiktok thing
If you decide to unbuckle your seatbelt on a swing ride mid ride, don’t expect to be fine…
Even with the seat belt off I'd imagine it's difficult to fall off

She got out of her seat. Nobody does that. Reasons why.
It's possible on that one. All you'd have to do is unclip yourself and push the bar up.
Some people do, some people think they are invincible and in this age of "let's do something stupid for click" I wouldn't doubt that's what happened. Some even stand up on roller coasters.
@@dawnj2360 the statement wasn't that it's impossible. It was nobody does it. As in most people aren't idiots and unbuckle while a ride is moving.

Conclusion. As always, rides at Canada's Wonderland are among the safest in the world. Rider fault. So sad.

Ive beem on that ride, numerous times. Never an issue. That ride has been around since opening. Never an issue. These exact same rides are at every park. Never been an issue. Dont try and get off after the cycle starts. Dont ride if your scared.
Your "I told you so" attitude helps absolutely nothing.
Not the parks fault at all. They conduct safety inspections everyday. It is not the fault of the park, the maintenance team, or the rides manufacturer (Zierer.) It is the fault of the rider.
That style of ride is over 100 years old (invented 1908. My aunt met my uncle on this sort of ride in post war Germany in the late 1940s. Very safe ride. Absolutely no way someone can fall out unless one deliberately climbs out, was my favourite ride as a kid at the cne .
That's so sad. I hope the girl is ok. :( :::
I've ridden this thing several times. If you're on the ride, seated appropriately and your restraints are fastened, you're not going anywhere. My suspicion is one of a few things. Either the restraints failed to lock in place, the rider wasn't properly seated, or, as they said, tried to get off when the ride started and was then struggling until she ultimately fell.
It's horrible, but this wouldn't affect my own willingness to ride Swing of the Century.
I could be misremembering, but isn't there the metal bar across the front that you have to move up and down the chains to get in and out? With that properly in place, I simply cannot think of a way someone could accidentally fall out. However, the bar could be very easily moved (again, if memory serves) by the rider during motion
As a kid I remember people getting into trouble for not sitting properly on this ride, twisting the seat, leaning backwards and tipping the seat...holding onto the seat of other riders, etc...every single time I rode these swings, someone had to be told to remain seated.
Yup, last time I went there were 2 kids who kept fooling around and the ride was stopped early. I was extremely frustrated at their immaturity, but the funny thing is they were older than me. I know I’m still just a teen, but it frustrates me how stupid teenagers (and adults) can be. I’m not saying she deserved it, but those were the consequences of fooling around, intentionally endangering yourself and going against the rules just for an extra thrill. (At least that’s what I heard happened. Just want to add I hope she’s doing well and will make a full recovery.)
Yep I see that all the time.
@@Purplefox4000totally agree
@@Purplefox4000 mate the women literally said in the video she slowly fell out as the ride progresses, i honestly doubt anyone with more than 5 braincells would undo their seatbelt on purpose on an amusement park ride lmao

funny how she says i don’t want my kids on that ride when it was the 17yr old fault for coming off the ride while it was going
She was messing around and paid the price. Hope she recovers and learns from it.
she has a medical condition.
Ive seen many teens and dumb older idiots doing stupid stuff they're not supposed to for views and likes or just being obstinate. Ive been kicked or swung into on rides like this because someone wasn't following the safety rules of the ride. It does not surprise me that the teen may have done something wrong on the ride. Beyond all that, I do hope she recovers.
I hope the young lady is ok
I've been going to Wonderland since the 90s. This never happens. Never.
So basically the witness (Stefanie) is blindly blaming Canada's Wonderland and their rides because of what she saw the girl do, not because anything was actually unsafe. Great way to stay objective Stefanie and start fear mongering.
Where did she blame Canada's Wonderland? She clearly explained what she saw happening without pointing blame. I don't think she's out of line for not wanting to go on the ride considering what she saw. I'm more concerned with how she seemed to notice a problem that was slowly getting worse and nothing was being done to shut down the ride. Did Stephanie yell to stop the ride? Or just wait with her son for her to fall? Was the person in charge of the ride watching the same problem unfold? Was the machine shut down before she fell? These are the answers I want.
You might want to rematch the clip because she didn’t once blame Canada’s Wonderland
17 year old is a darwin award 🎉
Another example of someone ruining it for other people
Again, it sounds like rider behaviour, but we don’t know the full story. Was the girl acting recklessly? Or did the staff operate before she was ready?
Her right leg was extended and out of the seat
We do know the full story. After getting checked, she unbuckled her restraints so she could extend her feet onto the seat in front of hers to fool around. As it sped up, the seat in front moved further away and she slid out of her own seat due to her loosened restraints.
Also, was she there with friends or family or just by herself? The whole incident is weird.
@@phillydisco-h1r I believe she was with family.
Before she was ready? Why do you think staff is there? We CHECK THE RESTAINTS EVERY SINGLE TIME
I've been on the ride several times. Like most rides, you have to do something dangerous to get seriously hurt on a ride. I don't particularly like the place, but they do seem to take safety pretty serious there.
Ofc it’s safe, it’s an amusement park in a first world country it’s sad this had to happen but it’s kind of sad the mom things the ride is at fault
Yeah the employees check every single seat belt before it starts, I noticed they don’t mess around when it comes to safety.
@@tigana yes all amusement parks know that they will be in a lot of trouble if they don’t take safety as their top priority
One of my favorite rides in Wonderland. Seems pretty safe to be honest.
Hope other kids learn a lesson from this incident and stay safe.
The authorities did inspect the ride and if they found nothing of concern, then that’s it! Why are people in the comment section flabbergasted like it’s unheard of teens behaving recklessly and doing dangerous things for clout? Maybe she panicked and wanted out or maybe she was suicidal?
Because most teens are like that. They think they are being cool but they are being annoying and troubling everyone else and how the mother was blindly justifying her child.saying it’s the park fault and I will never back. These type of people are reason gen z people are screwed because they don’t know how to parent
yeah, I dont really blame anybody here. Ive been on this ride multiple times with friends at wonderland, the safety is very loose as youd typically see with rides like this. I had a friend that after the ride had stopped spinning and it was lowering, jumped down and walked to the exit (it was still quite a ways in the air). All he got was a verbal slap on the wrist. And theres not really anything you can do to make the safety better for this kind of ride that wouldnt impede regular operations.
Get well soon little girl! 💐🙏
Since when is a 17-year-old a little kid?
@@keyboardkween8744That’s small…
You need to retitle this: Recounting when teen unbuckled own seatbelt and fell from the ride. Stop click bait titling like it’s the park fault.
Okay something terrible happened and no matter how or why can we all just please agree to send positive thoughts, prayers and vibes out for the healing and recovery of this young person. Calling her names ,or guessing what happened won’t help or change anything at this point ! Thank you..
get well soon , young person
My shoes would always fall off on it but it was my favorite ride as a kid.
It’s not the works fault at all other people on the ride said that the person that fell out was trying to push out of the ride to commit sui$ide
I feel really really bad
While it is the rider's fault, lessons learned. Sometimes you have to protect people from themselves. I hope the team takes measures to ensure people can't do this to themselves in the future.
Maybe she's got dizzy. Its going around in the circle, quite fast . I've been on that ride at this Calgary Stampede And never had a problem, but depends on the person. Hope the young lady is okay.
That’s the funnest ride at wonderland and doesn’t feel unsafe at all. I thought it was one of the scary rides.
The swings by far are my favourite ride no matter where I go. It's the same safety features every time. A deep seat, a crotch strap that snaps in to a metal bar you pull down. Sure I've seen people unbuckle the strap or move the metal bar. If you fiddle with any safety feature on a ride you have the ability to het hurt. Clearly she was not seated properly. This wasn't an injury involving her fingers getting caught in the chains, or a chain holding the chair snapping. This was not faulty equipment but a stupid teen thinking they were cool and above safety standards. You fool around and you find out to put it appropriately. Don't blame the ride or the park, this is on the individual.
So sad and disturbing 😮😢😖
So she didn’t buckle up right? She probably is mental I’ve been on that ride so many times
I seen a kid growing up throw up ages ago. That turned me off the ride for good
Same as airplanes, if you decide to unbuckle it’s your choice, turbulence may hit you hard
Was she screaming for help? That would have alerted the operator sooner. So clearly she wasn't in distress
Ive been on this ride many times before, the main flaw is the rider can undo the restraint bar at any time, and it isn't locked
Wheres the video?
SAFE AND EFFECTIVE
Yup. Watch the video. The tssa person explains that the ride and maintenance wasn't at fault and the girl had to have climbed out of the ride or unbuckled mid operation
Oh and stop fear mongering
I hope she’ll be ok .
Ok I wondered about this... this isn't a ride you just fall out of.
Pls tell me this had nothing to do with a Selfie
I hope it wasn’t a social media thing
I've been going on the swings since I was 5 even I knew as a kid how easy it is to make your self fall but if your a component person and make sure your strapped in your good. Don't relie on the teenager staff there to check your seat locks. Do it your self
Gee, I “wonder” what will happen if I try to do everything possible to get off the swing while it’s in motion?
Other news outlets said she had a medical emergency that got her falling off? I thought it was a seizure based off that article
It's like how they have the signs on the wooden rollercoaster La saying STAY SEATED
They should have the rides where once it's locked that you cannot get out and should have a key to open it up once the ride is finished especially that kind of ride so they should do something about that as that is not a normal swing and even on a normal swing you can get injured so they should add more safety features cause its clearly not safe if u are able to get out as it is moving.
If the ride was operating (i.e. in rotation on a slight axis), how is it physically possible that the rider fell vertically (i.e. perpendicular to the ground)? Would the rider's trajectory not be on more of a diagonal descent as the momentum and direction of the ride would have flung the rider? Additionally, is there not some centrifugal force as well while the ride is operating?
Some questions for the inquisitive and forensic physicists out there!
It takes a few minutes into this ride for it to get to full height and speed. If she fell shortly after the ride started, it may have been too slow for her to be thrown.
English, please.
@@keyboardkween8744too many big words for your tiny brain?
@@keyboardkween8744 I apologize, but that was English. I can direct you to some English language learning resources if you like.
@@crunchybunnylady Any rotation at any speed will result in a trajectory to some extent. The only way to fall vertically in a trajectory that is perpendicular to the ground is if the ride is moving strictly on that vertical axis. Even the slowest rotation from the centre point will result in some level of displacement from the starting position.
Just watching and don’t say nothing Lord
Seeing this 2 days before going to Canada wonderland
How’d she’d even survive? Didn’t they say 30 feet and it’s swinging you around. She must of been flung from ride. Unless they mostly stopped it by then. Very loud how heavy was she?
Gravity is a cruel mistress.
I’ve been on that ride over 40 times over the 20 years I have been going to Wonderland. The rider was having a seizure that’s why she fell off. Was not Wonderland’s fault or the rides fault that ride is among one of the safest rides in the world. Wonderland has the best safety record I think of all of Canada and maybe all the world.
I used to work at Wonderland. There are always safety inspections. And as the person in charge of making sure a person is safely in their seat, belts/bars checked, make sure they fit properly, i have never had any incidents happen. I've never even heard of Wonderland having any accidents due to a machine malfunction. As sorry as I am for the girls accident, i do not believe this blame should be put on the park/specific ride or person who was operating it at the time. She must have gotten out of the seat herself.
I got hurt already 1998 never got on a ride again ….the contract states that Canada’s wonderland is not responsible if you get hurt in their premises and it wasn’t this ride where my incident was
Did you know they just put that there to deter people from suing them? I’m not trying to sound like a jerk. I actually learnt that in law class. If they’re negligent in maintaining their rides or an operator was negligent, they can be sued. Sorry to hear you were injured. That’s horrible and I hope you are okay now.❤
Ridden this ride since I was a kid and never had an issue
Always enjoyed the swing ride at any theme park or carnival ("The Gravitron" has been my favorite ride since I was a kid). What the rider did was incredibly stupid, even a five year old would be questioning what that person is thinking?
I have stated a few of the rides weren't safe if people had dislocations of their legs they even upgraded the Behemoth after my complaints
ok Karen good job keeping the world safe.....unfortunately had you watched the video though this had nothing to do with the safety of the ride. It seems the rider did something they shouldn't have done.
It's the riders fault!!!
Was she not bucked in properly or smth? Like how does this happen
Panic makes folks do crazy things.
I’ve been on this ride many times and Canadas wonderland is the most safest when it comes to there rides so it’s actually her fault I was there a few weeks before it happened. If you go on a ride please don’t be this stupid
I remember going on this when I was like 11 and I was fine but now me being 14 going on this is rlly uncomfortable considering that I weigh more and I would be able to touch the trees with my feet being taller than I used to be I used to love this ride now I definitely don’t love this ride every other ride I feel comfortable on except this one and time warp
Could have been a medical episode by the sounds of it. They do happen regardless of the age. Rides tend to bring out medical issues if there are any. No fault of the ride, operator or park. Things happen and glad they are recovering. Do yourself a favor and if you have any medical conditions do not go on rides. You're one ride away from a bad incident if you do.
I watch a ton of ride accident videos of amusement park rides and if all the restraints were deemed safe and in working order along with nothing wrong with the ride it was riders fault.
I was on that a couple days ago 😮
I remember the crazy rides from when I was a kid. I was big for my age at my age adult height by 14 5’11”. The rides where and many still are one safety restraint fits all. Back then at my size the restraint should have been ok for me but it definitely wasn’t. I am hoping this accident brings about a nation wide clamp down on safety standards.
Safety standards are high in Canada. All blame here is on the rider. She unbuckled, she therefore is to blame. Do you blame the car in an accident if the driver doesn't wear their seatbelt and goes through the windshield?
she may have been trying to get her cell phone in her pocket and fell out of the ride
I heard that she may have had a medical emergency.

I always hated that ride cause I thought the chains would break
she had to unbuckle the belt, raise the bar, and then lift herself out of her seat to fall out. Took a good bit of effort.
It’s sad but the riders own fault. I’ve been on this ride many times and never felt unsafe. I’ve seen teens try and unbuckle on other rides. Lesson for anyone, don’t unbuckle mid ride and wait till it stops.

I hope that person is ok but I can’t feel all that sympathetic because she got out and did that herself. Canada’s Wonderland is not to blame and their maintenance team is very good at making sure stuff get repaired proactively at all times. Park isn’t to blame at all. People these days don’t follow rules properly at an amusement park for some reason and it just shows people lack common sense.
Tragedy,
Maybe, the girl panicked and sometimes when people panicked, had an anxiety attack and as result a person may do something do bizarre. Once, I was at a dentist office and was numbing medication made me feel like I couldn’t breathe despite the dentist assurance. I stated panicking and kept saying, get this stuff out of me. If that dentist didn’t give a medication to calm me down, I would have physically ran out of that office screaming bloody murder. So it can happen if what they are saying is true. Canada’s Wonderland has good safety records.
