    Harry Dean Stanton is the glue that holds this together. Without him, it would be a good film; with him, it's a GREAT film. His characterization of Bud is discouraged and world-weary, and yet shows a decency at the core by briefly taking Otto under his wing.

    • @greg55666
      @greg55666 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This movie doesn't need glue to hold it together. You could take out any random 90% of it and the remainder would still be the greatest movie ever.

  • @tmrezzek5728
    @tmrezzek5728 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Yet, despite his disheveled appearance, you get the sense that Bud has a compassionate side to him and, deep-down, he wants to do something meaningful with his life. So he tries teaching Otto all about the repo man trade as fast as possible and, later, dies while trying to get the box. And even Otto comes around to feeling a kinship with Bud at the end by pleading with him, "Only an asshole gets killed for a car!" This is what makes 'Repo Man' such a great movie--the characters are interesting and you care what happens to them.

    • @CaseFamily
      @CaseFamily 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I wrote my master's thesis in part about this movie, struck by the strong similarities (and of course differences) between it and "Kiss Me, Deadly", making a case (ahem) for seeing Repo Man as film noir. I actually felt that despite the fact that LA has become even more crapsack and dystopian in the 30 years between the two films, the movie ends on a hopeful note.
      You put your finger right on a point central to my thesis.
      Bud, Otto and Miller are the only desiring subjects (in the Lacanian sense) in the film (they want other than that which they think they want, which they get by not getting what they think they want. Or at least that's how Slavoj Zizek interpreted Lacan on that count in what I had been reading). Everyone else in the film is a driven subject (they want only what they want ... take Leila, who seems to be a desiring subject at first but then tells us "I'd torture someone in a second if it were up to me"). That's why Bud wants the Malibu enough to die trying to get to it, and why Otto and Miller can get into the car and drive it off into the heavens at the end when it repels everyone else.

      Bud has a weird character arc, where he starts out as a main character and then suddenly is barely in the movie during the second half and becomes more antagonistic when he is (although he gets redeemed at the end).
      According to the director, this is because he fired HDS midway through shooting and then rewrote a bunch of his scenes (that showed a more sympathetic side of Bud) so that they were about Lite instead.

    Just adding my remembrance of Harry Dean Stanton in this essential clip for him from the movie we should thank him most for making, the most GenX cult film, one of the most essential films of the 1980s, and one of the best cinematic depictions of LA ever.
    Always in small roles in so many '80s films that I enjoyed or remembered when I was young. Always added to those films in some way, as the late Roger Ebert noted, even if there wasn't much to add to.
    I was pleased to read that he actually kept at it until his death ... I hadn't seen anything with him in it since "Anger Management" and almost didn't recognize him there because of the makeup (but his voice was one of a kind).
    If you want to see him in a more central role, to see him really show his range, I heartily recommend "Paris, Texas". Long but good, from an actor's standpoint.
