    Thankyou Alex! You made A movie that even my closest friends couldn't give A shit about, which is great because till I die I won't have to hear their recollections, and impersonations of your timeless masterpiece. Once again thankyou, and the biggest compliment I can think of to pass along is, no one has ever made A film that is similar in any capacity to "Repo Man". It Stands Alone.

    I may be mistaken, but I think the guy who is playing J Frank Parnell in this is actually Zander Schloss, who played Kevin in Repo Man, and is also well known for being the bassist in the Circle Jerks. The original actor, Fox Harris, passed away in 1988. Good work though, Alex picked the right guy to be the stand-in.

    There are 3 cuts that i know of of Repoman - the original theater, the edited for TV (the one you see on TBS and other channels in the US), and the ShowCase (canada) one - the latter has many of the scenes herein, but other elements deleted. The TBS one is also another random set. Though I'd never seen the pool scene before.
    I think cutting out the phone bashing was a mistake - shows Otto's character development. Same with him turning off the TV on his parents, becoming the adult in the situation.
    Also important the post-sex scene conversation (which puts them into a relationship, later mentioned). And the snacks conversation is brilliant mundane dialog that's so very pre-Tarantino. It's a great representation of the age that people in the 80s grew up in (the 70s) and remember as kids/teens. And the eccentrencity of Parnell is so brilliant here. It's a damn loss!
    yes Parnell isnt played by the original guy in this little interview thing.

    • @hamupinhere
      @hamupinhere 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The snacks conversations should've 100% made it into the finished film. It's right in line with all the other off-beat dialogue.

      I loved the "generic" labelling, which one saw (with yellow instead of white paper) in REAL LIFE only a few years later. Also, Otto's parents, who've been suckered into giving away his college tuition fund to that scummy Televangelist (again, a few years before the PTL Club, with Jim and Tammy Bakker, scandal, or even Jimmy Swaggart and his romps with hookers), are lampooned as brain-dead TV addicts (makes one wonder how they bring in the bacon, given all that couch-potato(e)ing in front of the "boob tube"). Not that Otto appeared college-bound anyway, but that college fund could have proved helpful if, after a few years of learning the Repo Man trade, Otto decided to strike out on his own.

      The guy who played Parnell (his name is Fox Harris) died in December of 1988, so yes somebody else is playing him. He was only 52 years old, he died way too soon. He was great as this character.

    • @Skank_and_Gutterboy
      @Skank_and_Gutterboy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@selfdo
      About that: the movie had generic labeling but there is also actual labeling in places, too. In the grocery store where Otto gets fired (and Kevin does, too; "Louie, throw him out, too!"), at the very beginning of the scene there's big Del Monte signs showing canned peas, fruit cocktail, and other canned goods. There's prominent Coca-Cola signs sprinkled in the movie and you can see Uncle Ben's rice in the grocery store.
      It's funny how the generic items make the actual products stand out, which was smart (unintentionally or not). When Otto and Bud go to the liquor store the first time, behind the counter there's a section of Crown Royal bottles and the patent purple boxes of it. There's also A LOT of Jim Beam and a prominent bottle of Chivas Regal. Most other bottles are too out of focus to be identified or they're turned around backwards so you can't see a brand name.
      In the liquor store scene where Duke gets shot and Otto asks Debbi facetiously if she wants to be a Repo-wife, there's prominent Bud Light signs in the store window.

    • @Skank_and_Gutterboy
      @Skank_and_Gutterboy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      At 14:25, I don't understand why Sam Cohen is getting told "this is the sex scene". No, the sex scene was when Otto was dropping off Leila at UFO (United Fruitcake Outlet), Otto asks her out, she blows him off, then she reconsiders and says, "Ya wanna get back in the car?" (wink-wink, nudge-nudge). I agree, the scene here (post-sex conversation) is where a relationship is getting established.
      At the end when Otto chooses to go into the glowing UFO/car with Miller, it's a little weird and disjointed with this scene cut out because Leila asks, "What about our relationship?" I took that to mean she and Otto had been dating and it just didn't get shown or she's reading way too much into getting a quickie with Otto in the back of Mr. Peason's Cadillac.

    Thanks Radu! I had no idea this existed. When was it made, do you know?
    I saw the film on HBO or Cinemax around 87 and it instantly became my favorite film, more than a film really. I loved it so much I became obsessed with it. I feared it was some sort of accident - that it ever got made and that it made it to cable TV - and that once it left cable I would never see or hear of it again. VCRs were expensive back then and only rich people had them and video stores were just arriving and I simply had no way to save the film or ever track it down again so I borrowed a VCR and bought my first tape and recorded it for posterity. I went around showing it to every friend I had! I still have that tape.

      Great story! I know what you mean by wondering if it was some kind of half ass art school/ short film, back then the premium channels didn't have A lot of content that they "owned" so sometimes they would actually show some odd films at odd times, 9:20 am on A Wednesday morning, you'd tell A friend about it, and then you would look for it, and you would never see, or hear about the film again,
      but not "Repo Man". It's called A cult classic but this film is more than that, it's got everything, if this film came out now it would be praised head to toe. If A film like "No Country for Old Men" can get the recognition that it did, and some other, somewhat contemporary films like "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood" or any Wes Anderson film
      "REPO MAN" on A second look by the "Critics" would have more of A lofty placing in film history. Imagine if "Repo Man" came out around the time "Pulp Fiction" came out the kids would have went nuts for it!!! But hey, it didn't and part of the reason Why it's so good is it does A Fantastic job of displaying the time, and place, it's setting, I remember that time, and this movie is A Dead On snapshot of 83'/84'.

      @@jasonsabourin9547 Definitely. A couple of years after I saw Repo Man I finally bought a VCR and went around to all the video stores asking for films "like Repo Man" but there was nothing. It was unique. Some of the employees were also fans so I knew at least I was not alone. This, obviously, was before the web so there was no easy way for a suburban dad to connect with the obscure corners of film cults. I honestly wondered if my love for the film was just my own misguided obsession.
      It wasn't until Pulp Fiction that I finally found a film and thought somebody got it, the ideas are still alive!

      P.S. Remember the last lines of the movie? "Whoa, this is intense!" --- Otto

      Ahh...but then there's "Straight to Hell" which stars some of the cast from Repo Man AND they use some of the lines! It almost seems like a sequel for some of the characters. Me and my friends saw Repo probably 20 times and quoted lines from the film all the time. We were already into punk music so the soundtrack put it over the top. Straight to Hell is better I think. Zander Schloss doing his Weiner Kid bit is f'ing awesome! Geeez...AND it also stars a young, unknown Courtney Love whose character is simply her being her. Ya, most people don't realize that the Neutron Bomb was a defensive weapon specifically made to counter the Warsaw pact forces from over-running Europe. In-fact - unlike "Star Wars" this did make such a scenario strategically null. This caused the Soviet tacticians to have a stroke and caused a ton of push-back and propaganda to have it banned since it rendered any conventional war obsolete. Former Soviets said that if it had been deployed the CCCP might have collapsed 10 years earlier - although that might have been a stretch, it did show the level of freak-out that was going on at the time after it's inception.

      I guess it could have been used to quell a uprising of your citizens as well. But then they were able to replace that with the implementation of weaponized microwave towers set up in strategic places and they look like the typical cell tower. The difference is the weaponized ones are going to have a electrical power source that looks like a substation next to it to generate the energy needed to power the magnetrons up there. And the FCC regulations maximum output for cellular communications are not anywhere close for the amount of power that a substation could produce.

      The purpose for designing the neutron bomb was a bit different- it wasn’t going to save civilian lives. The Soviets had engineered their armored vehicles to be survivable in a nuclear warfare environment. Neutron bombs pump out enough radiation to potentially still deliver a fatal dose even to someone inside a tank. Without that a heavily-armored tank with air filtration to keep out fallout, could break through NATO lines unless directly hit by a nuke… but a standard nuke that would hit a lot of tanks would vaporize massive numbers of civilians. A neutron bomb would still kill vast numbers of civilians but just due to radiation not blast and fire. The civilians were doomed either way- but only a neutron bomb would be highly effective at killing invading Soviet tank crew while in their tanks

    J. Frank Parnell is not crazy when he talks about having 100 chest x-rays a year. If each chest x-ray is 0.1 msv, 100x0.1=10 msv which is about the same as one chest CT scan. Radiation hormesis is when low dose radiation can have a positive effect. Check it out. A CT/PET scan can top out at ~25 msv in one dose!
