    Anne, thank you for showing us what it's really like. All of the other videos (that I can find) show assistants or friends, who have no idea how painful this is, doing the demonstrations. I really appreciate seeing it from someone who is actually experiencing it, and can talk about it firsthand. These are incredibly helpful (I'm just starting week 6). I'll keep watching. Thank you again. 😊

    Hi Anne! I’m 4 weeks and 1 day post op and recently began sleeping without the sling. I’ve gotten a better night’s sleep since doing so. Thank you for you videos as they have been helpful in my recovery. I didn’t know going into this that recovery would be such a long process; however, I intend to work hard to gain 100% range of motion in my left arm. I’m so glad I watched videos pre surgery and purchased all of the items needed for at home PT. I’m currently attending PT twice weekly and working out at home twice a day. I have a way to go before I can return to work and videos like yours have been a God send. I hope you are doing well. Thanks again!

Sorry for the long delay in replying, but I’m currently in my second rotator cuff rehab as I had to have my right shoulder worked on the exact same way. I’m currently in month three rehabilitating my right shoulder with the exact same surgery with also a little more done. It is definitely a test of positivity, patience and perseverance. I wish you the best and stay strong. It is a very long process to heal, but it is definitely worth it in the long haul.

    Hi Anne: I am 7 weeks post rotator cuff and related stuff surgery. I ran across your posts before surgery and have followed along as I have recovered. I want thank you for the posts. I have found them very helpful. I have also found the comments from others and your responses very helpful. That you are a skillful teacher, very athletic and goal oriented comes through loud and clear. I look forward to checking in for weeks 8 and 9.

      Ted, thank you for your kinds words. The outpouring of support I have gotten from comments has helped me also. It's wonderful to hear that me sharing my journey and struggles has helped others. I am now in month 10 and soon it will be a year which marks when I am fully healed.

    I'm only on week 3 and will be going to therapy tomorrow. I see I have a long way to go. Thanks for taking the time to show your progress. I can't wait to get rid of the sling. I hope by now you have fully recovered.

      Gary, stay positive and patient! Getting rid of the sling is a HUGE hurdle, but be easy on yourself when you don't have it on. I was super sore and still weak for many weeks, which surprised me how hard that part was. By 12 weeks I remember turning the corner and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I am on month 10 and almost back to myself pre - injury if not better. A few months marks my full recovery!

      Glad my videos have helped! I said the same thing that I would never wish the surgery we had on my worst enemy. My progress is outstanding at month 10 and my left arm is very close to being back to pre injury ability. I noticed that it even seems better than my right shoulder, which will probably need to have the same surgery in time. Keep staying patient, positive and persistent. You are over the worst part and building your strength back will be a motivating process. I remember week 11 finally seeing the light at the end of a long dark tunnel I was in for the first 10 weeks.     Thank you for commenting on the emotional challenges. I’m entering week 5 and struggling with my emotions, mainly anger and frustration. I had the surgery after weeks of PT for a dislocated shoulder so it’s already been a long slog. I’m trying to be present but I feel like life is whizzing past and I’m not part of it. Your videos have been helpful in helping to gauge my progress physically and, now emotionally. Thank you so much!

      Carol, thank you for letting me know that my videos have helped you. The comments on my videos have helped me the first time around and again the second time around now that I had my right shoulder completely redone as my left. I am in week three of my recovery and rehab now for my right shoulder. I have watched my own videos back to gauge my progress this time around, since it’s been more difficult. It is a challenging year of emotionally, mentally, and physically struggling. But I can say that it’s worth it because my range of motion and strength on my left side is better than ever. Best wishes, and you got this! Staying positive, patient, and persistent is key.

      @@AnneSchmidt Oh, my goodness! I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through this again but, I wouldn’t be surprised if I have to do my other shoulder as well. Apparently, I have thin RC tendons. Again, thank you for your kindness and thoughtfulness. Good luck!

    I’m at week 6 now. You are right, everything is harder. Also, trying to stay positive is a must. Slow and steady is how we will get the best and safest results. Thank you for this video.

    Great info thanks for sharing, I'm at week 7 , had 5 anchors put in for left shoulder for rotator cuff surgery. Going ok but my strenth in that shoulder is limited.

    Thanks Anne, excellent info. Had elbow surgery four months ago going in for rotator cuff surgery October 30 . Same arm so pt has been difficult for the elbow because of my shoulder but looking forward to getting my shoulder fixed so I can get some proper rehab.. thanks for so much useful info take care Mike !!!

    My goodness lady, your videos are awesome! I’m 4 weeks post surgery. Was your shoulder still very achy at week 4? Oh my the sad or mad hits me everyday. You’re doing gods work! Semper Fi!

      Thank you! My shoulder was quite sore up until week 10 for sure. I’m about to make my weeks 10-12 video soon. Glad they are helpful. I’ve made huge gains in the last weeks so keep the positive attitude and be patient. However, it’s ok to be mad and sad. I still have some low days. BUT those days and feelings will get fewer and fewer I promise.

      My surgery done on 24th of jan ..Still it's very much paining. According to doc and therapist my progress is quite and on right track..Bt still it's paining after doing exercises..Is it normal ?? By the way videos is just 👌👌👌👌👌

      Had my surgery Feb 10 - had labrum and rotator cuff repaired along with subacromial decompression. It’s 3/21, approaching the 6 week mark and still very achy and sore. Especially in the morning and during therapy. We got this!!

      Had a bad fall no surgery am doing physio wk 11 atm its slow going exercises u r doing is what I'm already doing. Lifting is getting better. N less painful.

    Thank you so much for your videos. I’m starting week 7 post op and my ROM is slowly improving so I push through my exercises and am happy when I see progress - no matter how small. Unfortunately my sleep has not been that great since taking the sling off a few days ago. I wake up every hour and have pain when I wake up. I’m hoping that will change soon as my muscles stretch and strengthen while they are relaxed while I sleep. Thank you for talking about the mental part of the process- keeping positive can be difficult but it’s necessary given the slow process that we must go through. Hope you recover well soon.

      Keep believing and staying patient as well as positive. I was exactly the same after I got my sling off. Sleeping was challenging before the surgery, after the surgery, wearing the sling, and after the sling. I’m almost 4 months out and finally sleeping like I did when I had no injuries in my shoulder. I’m only able to lift 5 lbs and I’m still weak, but I’m so glad finally that I had the surgery. You got this! The mental stress of this surgery is so real. I tell my physical therapist that counseling maybe a good option beside PT for this brutal year long healing ❤️‍🩹 and recovery process.

    My injury and projected repair sound similar to yours - my surgery is in 2 weeks. Thanks so much for these awesome videos - I know there are down times, but you exude positivity and that's what I am looking for at this point! As a nurse, I know that much of this recovery will be mental strength as well as doing the physical work - I will watch your progress and hopefully I will be able to keep up!

    You’re a few weeks ahead of me. But I had an open surgery. I’m 4.5 weeks out and just got out of the sling. My shoulder aches now. I definitely can’t do what you’re doing but I haven’t started PT yet.

      My arm/shoulder out of the sling was sore (sometimes really sore) and still is. I’m finishing week 9 today. PT will do the same. I ice my shoulder after PT and still twice a day. You’ll also find parts muscles around the shoulder (chest and back) might be sore or your elbow because of wearing the sling. Driving again was also exhausting on the shoulder. Every rotator cuff surgery is different so be patient and positive. Mine was definitely intense, but not open so you may need more time. I started PT two days after my surgery. Just mild passive stretches and movements. Do the PT and don’t get too frustrated (I know the feeling). Hugs Amber! You’ve got this.

Many people think 🤔 Ooh it’s just your shoulder…but we know how this really goes. Take pride in your ROM gains as little or large as they may be.     I literally just had my therapist tell me my “capsule” is very tight as well which has made my Week 6 progress…meh. I have appreciated your positivity up to this point and look forward to the weeks ahead

      @@Jmurrie3 just try to keep the faith and stay persistent as well as positive. This recovery is about the long game. I’m still in PT for my right shoulder rehabilitation (same exact surgery as my left in this video). I’m so very glad I had both shoulders fixed NOW two years later and one year later. Keep me updated and I believe in you!

I’ve just recently (in week 6) been able to drive. I went back to work after 2 weeks. I’ll keep posting these until a year from my surgery date.     Hi Anne, I just hit week 6 and the sling came off on Monday! Yay :) Do you remember if you still had overall stiffness and where your arm ached? I tend to really feel it at night when trying to sleep and just wanted to see if you also experienced this too at around week 6 or 7.

      First, congratulations on the success and getting to week six! No sling is a huge milestone. But it does come with some issues, it did for me both times.
      Second, I had the exact same issues as you with it being stiff and aching especially at night. I will say with my second surgery and recovery on my right I did wear the sling at night randomly in weeks 7-9. During the day, I did wear the sling if I was in a very busy public place. Sleeping was not comfortable until maybe week 12 or so for me. But, I promise it is all worth it and you will sleep better than ever in time and won’t regret this journey. I remember doing heat and then cold at night during these weeks. I slept with a cold pack on for sure!

      My arm is still very sore and achy, but the physical therapy is more intense now too. Like you I was very active prior to having this done. Today is my first day in the office at work, and driving was a little difficult with my arm so weak on the steering wheel. All in all I am remaining positive, but always feel guarded and concerned about reinjury.

      ⁠@@BrianT897this all sounds almost identical to my recovery. I remember vividly having to use my good arm to place my rehabilitated arm onto the wheel to drive. When I went back to work I also was extremely exhausted by the end of the day because everything was more difficult. But, every week I did improve slightly at least, but day by day it was definitely ups and downs. My mantra at weeks 6-12 was rest is best, especially since PT was more intense besides being back at work! How are you doing now?

      Hi Anne, Friday after my full day in the office and intense PT the day prior felt like a huge set back. My shoulder and lower bicep area was so stiff and achy. Pretty much the same on Saturday and again today on Sunday. I may even slow down a little on the home exercises, since I was doing all of them twice daily. Thinking maybe it’s too much. Did your arm get very sore and painful in your lower bicep basically the top of your arm where it bends? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! It’s amazing how much this makes a difference.

      Tomorrow starts week 8 in my recovery and to be honest I am having a difficult time. Weeks 1 - 6 in the sling I was doing so much better. I never thought there would be so much pain and discomfort after the sling came off. My concern is re-injury or the surgery wasn’t successful. :( Hopefully I will round the curve soon. Sleeping has been terrible as of late and at times I feel that I am where I was at prior to surgery. Can you relate to this from your past experiences looking back? Thank you Anne!

      I had both too! Best wishes. The first week was tough for me and I was glad to have help. ICE 🧊 ICE 🧊 ICE 🧊 seriously! I have five anchors in my humerus 🦴 bone. If you had the same make sure you don’t compare yourself to those who had a less intense rotator cuff surgery.

    This is a very good video. I am at week 6 and I am right on target with the range of motion. Where I thought I was kinda behind or not progressing. I have those down days too, so good to know at this point it is normal. Thank you for these helpful videos.

    I’m trying to stay positive,1 more day until hopefully I get my sling off. It’s been almost 7 weeks . To be honest I was in serious depression for the first four 🎉

      Keep trying to stay positive and trust me when I say I know how hard it is because I struggled with it as well. This recovery is long, brutal, painful and exhausting. BUT I promise it is all worth it in the end and staying patient, positive and persistent is imperative. I am in month five of my now second rotator cuff rehab because I had my right shoulder completely reconstructed as my left shoulder in this video. Back to back years of surgery and rehabilitation has put me to the test! Find a mantra to keep you focused and motivated. YOU GOT THIS!

    I don’t get it. My dr has me going really slow. I am at like Week 9 and I have struggled with a lot of swelling. I am still swollen and stiff in my bicep especially. I am getting better each day but I am so very behind you and the others I have watched. Hope you are doing w

      Pati, you got this! Everyone goes into surgery with their own variables, the surgery itself as well as the surgeon can vary greatly and how each persons body recovers is so very different. Your body will tell you how far you can "push it". My PT doctor was absolutely amazing and his personality as well as his skill & knowledge made a huge impact on my recovery. I iced my shoulder for almost three months as well as did PT twice a week for almost four months.

      I am 9 weeks post surgery. I think I can relate to your shoulder pain issue. About 3 weeks ago, when I started some new stretching exercises I developed these stabbing pains that came out of no where for no particular reason, such as when I was on my daily walk. Of course, I was concerned as they were different from the other shoulder pains that have been so much a part of the process. My PT guy said this was normal part of the healing process for some people. He suggested that they were muscle spasms. They are now starting to be less frequent and less intense. That is not to say that our conditions are the same. It is just to say that I appreciate a sense of frustration. Hopefully, your situation will improve.;

      I hope things have improved. I remember having tough weeks like that where I didn't see much improvement. But overall, I got much better in time and at month 10 I am almost back to full pre-injury abilities and strength.

      @@tedweaver92 I also remember having "new" pains that came out of nowhere. They did eventually all go away but I that was a frustrating and confusing aspect of this recovery.

    Can wash hands, brush teeth, dress Slowly
    Sleeping now in bed one week (No Sling)
    9/24/24 OT = bad weekend.
    Shoulder STIFF. Deltoid unhappy day 1
    10/1/24 OT 2mrw - worried
    10/7/24 Surgeon followup
    Great video. I have a Marie Osmond Total Gym which should help when i get past simple shoulder Stretch @ OT

    I’m 70, 7 weeks post op, also a retired CRNA, so I thought I knew what I was getting into…not so. This has been though. Really tough. Thanks for your video. Btw, I’m also prior Navy.

      Vicki the recovery and rehab for this surgery is brutal and long. I am at 7 months post op and my left shoulder is getting stronger and I am so glad I did the surgery now. I couldn't say that confidently until about a month ago! You got this and know I understand what you are going through. Best wishes and positive thoughts.

      Hello Vickie: I am age 71 and 9 weeks post surgery. I like you thought I was prepared. I talked to others who had the surgery, watched videos, purchased all the stuff that I thought I would need. I even practiced using one hand for a month before surgery. It is one thing to say that the return to normal activity would take 4-6 months. It is another thing to live it. This is a tough, long process.

I’m currently rehabilitating my right shoulder now with the exact same rotator cuff surgery, and even a little more work done. I am using the same equipment again as I rehab my right arm.     Hi Anne, did you start driving after week 6 and if so, how comfortable did you feel driving? I am on week 3 now, and just want to get an idea on what to expect at this stage.

      Sorry for the delay in responding. I did not feel comfortable driving after six weeks. But I did do it. I would say it took me until about week 12 to feel comfortable. I also couldn’t drive for long distances in the first weeks of driving. I actually found that driving after my right shoulder was worked on was a bit easier. I didn’t realize that I used my left arm to do most of the driving. Here if you have other questions and I hope things are going well for you. And that your rehabilitation is successful.

    I’m at 6 weeks post rotator cuff, ac joint resection, cleaned up fraying, lab bicep tear, something about the bursa, and bone spurs. I’ve had relatively good 6 weeks, not to much pain and have slept in my bed entire time with only ice machine and aleve. Well yesterday was my first therapy session and I have been in bad pain since. I slept maybe 3 hours last night and am not looking forward to tomorrow!

      Pain and sleep deprivation are definitely the biggest hurdles in this recovery process. Besides needing to be very patient with yourself and persistent because it takes a very long time for the tendons to heal back on the bone. I can tell you that sleep deprivation lasts for longer than we’d like. I am currently rehabilitating my right shoulder with the exact same rotator cuff surgery that I had on my left in this video above. I am in month three and still not sleeping the way I normally did pre-injuries and pre-surgery. But I can say that my left shoulder and arm are feeling absolutely wonderful a year later. So know all the hard work, positivity, patience, pain, and sleep deprivation are worth it. But it doesn’t make it any easier when you’re going through it. But I promise there is a light at the end of the tunnel, so stay strong!

    Hi Anne,
    You and your videos are amazing.
    I am day 3 post surgery where the doc found that he couldn't repair it. The lack of cartilage and damaged tissue didn't show up on the MRI. I'm so disappointed. I have to go through this healing and then DO IT AGAIN, BUT WITH A JOINT REPLACEMENT. 😢 Sat through today I suffered horribly with constipation and then cramping. Tummy still feels a bit crampy. Not sure what to do. I'm sure I should not have taken ANY opioid since I had the On Q Painball, but I did. Now I'm afraid to take any pain pills or to eat! Any ideas? 😮

      Thank you 😊 and it’s nice to hear my videos are helping others. So sorry to hear the surgery wasn’t able to fix your shoulder and you now need a full joint replacement. I too suffered from constipation and digestive issues from the pain meds. I took them just long enough (two - three days) to handle the pain. Then drawbacks were not worth it and I just got my pain to an 8 and road it out. I wish the block lasted longer also, but mine wore off in like 12 hours after surgery. I am month 11 and am so glad I did the surgery and rehab. But it was a long go. Stay positive and patient and persistent. Best wishes and positive thoughts.

      I went back to work at 2-3 weeks. It was very difficult and not recommended. I was extremely sleep deprived! I have a job that I don’t have to do much physically, just mentally. I did have to get rides to work bc you can’t drive for 6 weeks.

    Great video! I think I had the exact same surgery , just about all the things you had done, I did too. It will be 3 weeks for me on Nov 8Th (Don't forget to vote LOL) I have good days and bad. I feel some days I take 2 steps backwards, but I really hope I'm as good as you at 6 weeks

      Thank you! I just had my 6 month check up with my surgeon yesterday and he said my progress was remarkable. I also had good days and bad days, as well as feeling like I took steps backwards at times. Week 11 was a huge turnaround and I took massive steps forward. Three months my pain slowly faded to be finally no pain by 5 months. Keep staying positive, patient and perseverant. Best wishes Steve on your recovery and rehab...YOU GOT THIS!

It did take time to sleep well again, but no sling was the first step. Be careful in public because people won’t know you had the surgery and may bump into accidentally.     Would u say rehap of displaced proximal humerus fracture differ significantly compared to rotator cuff??

      The rehab would be different. I had full thickness tears on the tendon but the bone was good but I do have five anchors drilled into the humerus bone in the shoulder.

    I had rotator cuff surgery 5 weeks ago and haven’t figured out how to shave my underarms yet. I can reach over to the injured arm but even bending over can’t get it high enough to get a razor in there. And worse, I can’t get the injured arm hand far enough to the good ar,pm to shave it. Any hints?

      It was extremely difficult to shave under both arms. My left because I could not get underneath that armpit because of lack of mobility and my right because I had to shave that armpit with my right hand. I found leaning over like the pendelum PT exercise helped. Every week it will get easier. Or just don’t shave for awhile which is what I did early on.

      You are correct, they do not. This is a conversation I’ve had with my physical therapist. Not only do you have to recover physically, mentally there are many ups and downs that follow this surgery. I think many people who go through this would benefit from seeing a therapist as well as a physical therapist.

    I did had surgery at 7. 12. Last year and i still can not move my arm higher as my shoulder and even movements to the shoulder are very painful

      Sorry to hear that! I am now recovering and regaining my right shoulder, after the same surgery I had a year ago, but now with my right shoulder. Keep pushing forward and doing the exercises. My right shoulder has been even tougher if a rehab than my left! You got this and seek help with physical therapy if you can.

      I vividly remember that! The sleep deprivation besides the pain and rehab is what makes this such a challenging recovery. Sending you positive vibes and happy thoughts. You got this! I did sleep better by 12 weeks and then by 3 months through the night and by 6 months I felt like myself again. It will get better promise!

      I am almost back to normal or better than normal. Still working on getting symmetrical ROM on both shoulders because my flexibility is high. So my right shoulder still is lagging. But strength and athleticism has been in the upward trajectory! How are you? Here if you have any questions!

      I’m not sure what you mean? I had my left shoulder completely reconstructed a year ago and my right shoulder reconstructed this past summer. I’m currently rehabbing my right shoulder and in month three.
