The sunk-cost fallacy is a real fun killer. Your point that the money is already gone is a very good thing to keep in mind. Whether you finish the game or not, you've already invested the same amount of money into it. At that point, it's just a matter of how much time it's worth.

i mean we have other priorites in adult so you can enjoy play games if you try it what i mean is just play some cars games like dirt2,3 etc and just dont care about anything game and you try gta and play for fun like shooting police try games with sandbox to make what you want find games to play with friends and you will enjoy games again i miss playing games singleplayer and finish plot but playing for fun is not that bad you just need change mindset tell yourself that games for fun make you feel silence, a break, spending time with friends or family to let your brain work, maybe listening to the game's soundtrack? you can do it, my friend, the community has simply contributed to making us more picky and we talk mainly about new games because the world is changing, games are changing, the community is changing and we cannot avoid it, the most important thing is to understand that it is like this and it will not come back but at all it doesn't have to be worse :)

In my own personal experience, I've found that simply sticking with a "play whatever I feel like" mentality is actually _less_ enjoyable than building up a structured plan to make it through my backlog.
So often I'd find myself drifting back to the same multiplayer games, or even worse, scrolling through websites looking up information on upcoming games. But by filling out a plan, figuring out how much time I'm likely to spend on each game and allocating time to it, I generally end up enjoying myself more. It feels as though I'm actually achieving something, and I get to discover some new favourite games along the way.

    • @HurkaTheGuard
      @HurkaTheGuard ปีที่แล้ว +16

Something i heard on a video about the game backlog problem is that just organizing the backlog works for your brain to think "I have done something, i have achieved something." and after i did organize, cut down or add to my backlog i do agree with that statement.
As for how to pick the next game, different things work for different people. In my case i try to not play the same genera in a row. Even if i only put in an atmospheric game like Journey in between 2 large RPGs it helps, mainly just to not compare the last games played directly. Another thing i do is selecting 6 - 8 games i want to force myself to play and then picking from them what i feel like playing (Or having friends pick from them). I do this because i know i can and will spend 6 hours picking from my Steam, Epic Games and the Game Pass library only to default back to youtube videos. Decreasing the number of things to choose from ironically means you will experience more of them.

@@HurkaTheGuardThat is definitely a good idea. And I feel like I have the opposite problem that most people have. I am so picky when it comes to games. For me it seems like everything has to be just right. Like combat, controls, graphics, style, etc. If those aren’t perfect then I won’t have fun. And I hate that I’m like that. I want to play and enjoy more games but it just doesn’t seem like I can.
Luckily I found a game called Ghost of Tsushima (now my favorite game) last year and platinumed it. And I am currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn. But as you can tell, those games are very similar in a lot of ways and what I want to do is widen my horizons (no pun intended) and play all kinds of other games. I just don’t know how to do that. And that is what led me to this video.

I used to be one of those people who played runescape for 10+ hours a day, it was back in.....2017 when I finally asked myself "why am I still playing?" And after I quit, I felt like I had so so much more time that I had started inline skating again.
I had forgotten how much joy skating used to bring me in my younger years and I had fallen back in love with it! I still enjoy runescape, but nowadays I like to watch people play it for the first time or watch their goals in the game rather than keep playing it myself. It's also opened me up to a lot of other genres I had no interest in back then, I felt like if I wasn't doing anything other than runescape it was considered "exp waste" as we used to call it lol

This is a very healthy attitude, I know I've made myself miserable by feeling like I had to finish a game that just wasn't working for me. Granted, what has happened in a couple cases (Dark Souls and NieR: Automata, specifically) is a fourth scenario this video didn't cover, that playing another game (Phantasy Star Online and its sequel, respectively) made me go "this is neat, but that other game I dropped before feels like this one, but a bit better", leading me to resonate with and finish the games I had previously let go of, enjoying them much more than I would have if I had forced myself to play them before I was ready.

i don't really make serious comments on yt videos but this one reminded me of a conversation i had with a friend a couple weeks ago about game recommendations. i feel like whenever my friends recommend me games half the time it's hard for me to just boot it up and play the whole way through, and i think it really has to do with the timing of when i play them. sometimes i conflate dropping a game that i know is supposed to be good or has been recommended to me with being a game i dont really like, but then i pick those games back up months or about a year later and fall in love with them, something i felt with inscryption and hypnospace outlaw. i think it's important not to rush to every new game people tell you to play and just give it some breathing room sometimes, for me personally it really adds to the impact a game has once you're actually in the mood for it

Wait... Outer Wilds is a game that has been praised a lot, I've had one friend in particular that has told me I need to play it and how it was one of the best gaming experiences he's ever had. But when I finally sat down and played it... I didn't really feel much of anything. The time loop was a interesting concept but the game never clicked for me and thus I dropped it. My friend has been bugging the me to finish it but I just can't bring myself to do it. At this point I need to rediscover what I found out last time and then somehow get through not really being intrinsically motivated to finish it. The game didn't capture me and that's fine. There are other experiences for me out there that will.

Hurts (only a bit) to see Hyper Light Drifter, one of my all time favorites, as the example game -- but I absolutely agree! I apply this to a a lot of things: games, tv, books, etc and I've become pretty ruthless in terms of adding things to my DNF pile. It never feels good to quit a game 2-3 hrs in, especially after paying $20+. But it's awful turning a pasttime into a weird prison sentence... That you also paid $20+ for.
Another thing I'll add is this has helped me figure out what I like and don't like in games and helped me better inform myself when branching out. Turn based rpgs normally aren't my thing, but I recently picked up Fuga: Melodies of Steel on sale and it's becoming one of my new favorites. The combat is a bit puzzle-y and it's mixed with base building sections to vary the tempo and flesh out the characters.
I think I would've passed on it forever had I been worried about spending ~14 hrs on a game I didn't like.

    100%
Outerwilds helped me cope with alot.
Think about it, no matter what you do, every 22minutes, the Sun blows up. No matter what. All those peoples dies and what matter isnt what you do. Not for the grand scheme of things. Every 22 minutes all is gone and thats it. Whats matter is the fun you have during this time. I had a similar feeling when i was a kid, plying the shit out of the skate 3 demo wich reseted every 20 min. What mattered was ''what Can i do this Time to have fun '' and not ''awww it's over'' and i dont know why, i still think about it to this day.
And then it clicked. This IS what i loved about vidéo games. This fleeting sens of having mindless fun. I picked UP the yakuza franchise recently and it's a loveletter to gaming.
The glame wants you to get Lost and ''waste'' Time having fun. Made me apreciate game all over again.

I always feel like time is such a slept on notion these days. Especially when you're not being very respectful of your time and mistreat it. My new saying over the past 6-8 months is my realization that "When you buy games, you don't just pay with your money, you also pay with your time as well."
That line of thinking got me to cull an astonishing amount of my games, hundreds. Why put your time, a currency you will -never- get back and -only- goes down for most people (i.e, people surviving invasive illness/conditions gain time.) into experiences that will not meaningfully impact you or contribute in a gainful way that shapes you as an individual? It's honestly changed me drastically for the better and I've little qualms about gunshotting a game in the head. The fomo sucks but having a kindred relationship with gaming when it does happen in its stead is way better.

There are many games that if I had stopped playing them when I thought the experience was just "good", I would have regretted it deeply. Two example from the top of my mind are Nier Automata and Tunic. Both games take some time to get where they want to player to go. I like your approach of stopping if you are not enjoying a game, sure. But sometime things take time. Heck, I know you are a big MH fan (so am I :) ). The amount of times I've heard people had to go back to the franchise to finally understand and enjoy it hahaha Yes, stop. But also go back. Maybe your got there at the wrong time.

Probably not anything new to say, but I think this is a pretty good video. I've very often felt pressured or annoyed into playing things myself. I can be pretty stubborn, so that part's on me, but I've often played even when I decidedly hated a game. Obviously, it's never great to just dismiss stuff out of hand, with minimal/no experience, or cherry-picking some rough spots, but it's taken a long time for me to just confidently say I'm not interested in something. Took a long time for me to admit I liked games with obvious flaws, weren't that great (whatever great means in terms of video games), or just plain weren't popular with my friends. The opposite too, admitting to disliking more popular games, even if they were admittedly well-made.
While I usually try to stay critical of games, because being complacent is typically bad, it took an absurd amount of time for me to really learn a couple of the points in the video. I'm not playing for a job, so why am I so stuck on going through things I'm actively hating with no light at the end of the tunnel? Why am I so worried about perceptions of myself or media about what's just a harmless hobby? Things don't have to be perfect or even especially good to be fun, good, thoughtful, memorable, or any combination of those. Games don't need to be bad, mindless, unplayable, or any combination of those to be disliked. While being analytical of media can bring lots of enjoyment and interesting revelations to some art that doesn't mean I can't just emotionally jive with something. Regardless how profound, novel, or awesome it may or may not be. A bit of a tangent, but I wanted to say that I liked the video and found it refreshing.
TL;DR: Iz gud vido. Nic wrk.

Literally 50+ times I would download something I would have no interest in and see if it clicks. A few things that have helped me enjoy gaming more:
    1. When I finish a game, I don't immediately think "What do I want to play next?" I allow myself to step away from the hobby and do other hobbies until there's something I REALLY want to play.
    2. I don't force myself to play games just because other people like them. If everyone else likes a game but it doesn't look like something that I would enjoy, then I simply don't play it.
    3. I stopped buying video games simply because they are on sale. I would rather spend $60 on a game I am actively excited for and know I will play immediately than $10 on a game that I am slightly interested in but will likely not play anytime soon.
    4. If I am not enjoying a game, I let myself stop playing instead of forcing myself to beat it.
    5. I no longer start new games with trophies/completion as a goal, and I don't try to do everything in an area before moving on to the next. Instead, I try to experience the story in a streamlined way. If I beat the game and am enjoying it enough that I want to continue playing it, only then do I consider going for trophies, completion, etc.

Most of my favorite games didn't capture me at first while other games that seemed more fun didn't last very long with this feeling. Company understand this behavior, that is why they tend to drop the good stuff at the beginning, to hook you and sometimes trick you.
I think I actually started to enjoy games when I stopped doing the 'initial feeling' behavior cause it was keeping me on a comfort zone. I'm not working on a tight 'games enjoyed' deadline or competing to be the 'guy who enjoyed the most games' so it doesn't make sense to optimize my game playing time. I learned this when watching movies and it worked wonders with games. Great things simply do not conform to your expectations.

I recently started playing Skyrim again on xbox for the purposes of earning G-Score (having achievements gives me something besides playing the game to gain satisfaction from) and Ive noticed that I am enjoying it a lot more without having specific goals in mind, without 50+ large mods installed like i do when i play on pc, just letting the natural flow of the game go after not having played properly in a few years, having ground my interest in it to a halt after many modded olaythroughs. Noticing a lot of the smaller details in conversations with npcs because im not constantly skipping dialogue, actually enjoying the stories it has to offer instead of being like "ah yea, this quest again"

I do typically drop games (hyper light drifter was also among the games I dropped in the past year) though I do typically plan on returning to a bunch of the ones I actually mostly enjoyed (hyer light drifter again, disco elysium and doom eternal come to mind for me here).
But I do kind of disagree with the fact that you know from the start when a game'd be among your favourites. Mainly because you chose to mention my absolute favourite, and that is absolutely not the case for my absolute favourite that took some time to grow on me. But when looking at my top 10 as a whole 7 out of 10 did follow that it's just my 1st, 4th and 10th favourite didn't so there are definitely clear exceptions. Though this more being pedantic I'm pretty sure we all know there's exceptions to the rule and it's not worth mentioning I guess.
Oh also as a sidenote I guess it doesn't really matter but I have managed to consistently add 2 games to my top 10 list each year for the past 3 years.

One thing I suggest to people. Write down or type your top 25 favorite video games. Don't think too hard and just write the first 25 that come to mind from any console/PC. When you're done, write down next to each game what TYPE of game it is: fighting game, racing game, RPG, platformer, story focused/decision making, RTS, FPS, etc... Then tally up all the games and look at what your top 3-5 genres are. That's where your gaming heart is. Those are the genres you should stick to.
Another trick I do is only put 5 games in visual sight of where your console & TV are. If you only play single player then make sure all 5 are single player. If you're like me who mostly plays single player but still plays some multiplayer, pick 3 single player games and 2 multiplayer games. Leave those 5 out until you beat all the single player games in the pile. The multiplayer get swapped out when you're finally bored or want to move on to a newer/different multiplayer game. The SP games you beat then go in a closet or bin along with other completed games. Then pull out 3-5 new games that you will play for months until those are beaten. Repeat. The point being that if you have 100 games in front of you all the time you might be inclined to jump around too much and not finish many games. Limiting what's in front of you and readily available forces you to keep playing those specific games until you're finished.

For me the biggest issue isn't the games. It's the time. I'm 34, got a wife, and 2 kids. I get up at 4:45AM everyday and I'm busy until about 10PM. By this time, I'm burned out and just want to lay down. I thought getting a Steam Deck would help but it hasn't. Between the job and housework, I just can't find the energy to enjoy games like I use to.

What I like to do is varying
This works for me as I like any genres of games, so if you're the same as me in this aspect try this out
Generally when I play a game nowadays I can't really jump straight into another of the same genre, I live jrpgs, but earlier this year I was playing tales of xillia, really enjoyed my time with it and felt like jumping straight to its sequel, tales of xillia 2, after around 10 hours I stopped playing it, because of what I'm going to call genre fatigue
So then I switched to a strategy rpg, as fire emblem engage was near its release date, so I waited for that game to release and played it, after playing that I decided to play outer wilds, once again, totally different genre from the games that I played before, after that I'm now playing hogwarts legacy, an open world game and finally I'm able to enjoy an open world game again, it feels like forever since I've become truly mesmerized by an open world game, elden ring was interesting, but really I think the last open world that truly captivated me was breath of the wild, which funnily enough tears of the kingdom will release in a few months so that will be fun
Anyways, after hogwarts legacy I'm planning on playing either tales of xillia 2 and finishing what I started some months ago or beginning final fantasy 14, as I heard a lot of good things about the game and want to really give an mmorpg a fair chance, after many failed attempts with other games of the same genre, another thing could happen and I could play another game, who knows really
Don't get me wrong, I can't really decide a game I want to play on the fly, a lot of the time I'm deciding I play my confort games, I love my MOBAs and I really enjoy doing some monster hunter hunts here and there, so that's what I tipically do while deciding what game to play next
I haven't felt this genre fatigue in a while and I truly enjoy and can appreciate what the devs are going for with their game with this tactic I created for myself, I haven't really been experiencing FOMO either, I took my sweet time playing fire emblem and outer wilds, even though I really wanted to interact with the community and see what they think about the endings of the game, but I didn't rush games to find these things out, I took my time and I feel like I really got to take the most out of the experience

I feel like I only play games if it's with friends now. Sea of Thieves, Borderlands, and League of Legends are all games I've spent many hours on playing with friends. Not very recently, but in the past few years. I've found I can't even play single player games anymore. Maybe it's because I'm older. When I was 13 Halo 3 came out and it was the coolest shit ever. I played the hell out of it, Reach, ODST and Halo Wars along with the first two Halo games back then. Offline campaigns and online matches were the shit back then. I was a big Halo fan. Now I have no interest in it. No interest in Halo 4 or Infinite or whatever else has come since. I just don't care anymore. Same with Mass Effect. Loved the first two, liked 3 aside from the end, didn't give a shit about anything else. No interest in it anymore. Same with Star Wars. Disney bought it and I don't give a shit about it anymore, but that's a different scenario. Disney just fucked Star Wars up so horribly I can't even look at it anymore without being disgusted.
I'm a big Warhammer fan. I have a lot of fucking models. Read many of the books, played quite a few of the games, all that shit. I bought Rogue Trader, a 40K RPG that from what I've seen is well liked and would theoretically be a game I'd be very interested in. I bought it in December 2023 shortly after it came out, played maybe an hour or two of it, and never touched it again. I uninstalled it a few weeks later. Don't know if I'll ever go back to it. I want to, at least theoretically. I should want to. I love 40K. But it feels like so much work and commitment. I bought this game for like $40 or something like that but hardly touched it. It just sits in my Steam library like my 200 other games. Why did I even fucking buy it. Why do I buy games and not play them. Why.
Sometimes I install games thinking I'll want to play them. I'd say 75% of the time I download them and don't actually open them. A few days later I uninstall them. The other 20% of the time I open them, play for 5 minutes, realize I don't actually want to play them, and quit. The rare 5% left over are times where I actually played the game for longer than an hour, but I can't remember the last game I played all the way through. I think I'm just depressed. I don't really play games with friends anymore. I haven't for a long time. It was fun while it lasted.

Just viewed a couple of you videos and I'm really enjoying the content, and your little touches of sarcasm about subscribing made me laugh, so I subscribed, but anyway, this was well said. My experience with Hyper Light Drifter was actually a lot like how you felt with Outter Wilds, I came into it not expecting a whole lot, I dug the color scheme and it reminiscent vibes of old Zelda games, but wasn't expecting a master piece, but that's exactly what it was, if you haven't already, I highly recommend that you go back and give another try, which also leads me to my second point; recently I picked back up a game that I didn't think much of initially, Axiom Verge 2, I hadn't played the first one but I heard a lot of raving reviews on how good it was, one source being my older brother, who, like you, I grew up watching play what would become some of my favorite genres, I gave AV2 a try and it seemed very bland, as someone who had played Hollow Knight along with several other masterfully crafted indie metroidvania titles, it didn't feel like it stacked up, so I stepped away and played other games for a few weeks. Now, I haven't finished Av2 yet, I'm probably only like halfway through, so the verdicts still out, but I've been on vacation for the last few days now and I've been waiting to get back to since I left my Ps4 at home. I think that as a player, a game being perceived as fun, could be based off our moods as well, some times you just wanna kill stuff, some times you wanna be mystified by fantastical worlds, or maybe you want a relaxing feel good casual game, other times you might want a challenge.. Anyways, you had some valid viewpoints, and I respect your game taste, keep up the good work man.

Trying completely different genres can also help. detective games, puzzle, jump n run... whatever. Sometimes you get bored by boring gameplay, because you already did that in 100 games before. Specially with AAA games. And it feels fresh to try something new.
I personally know that i´m more happy with games that are more "game" than reality. Means anime-like or a specific artstyle and gameplay. I don´t need reality in game. I love jrpgs or games with turn based or strategy combat systems. Could play them every day. But Action Adventure is my second fav genre (love Zelda and Tomb Raider and i need to try Uncharted). But sometimes i also play games like an Last of Us, God of War, Judgement, Nioh or whatever... then a jump n run or puzzle game. But don´t force you into a game (or genre) that you not want to play now and play what you really want or what you want to try for yourself.

I'm 38, have a wife and kids. I started to drop games recently because this concent that games should be shorter. I remember Super Metroid being considered a "long game" that was not an RPG, despite the fact that was just 6 or 7 hours long at average, now that's your average "short game", and that being said I feel alot that modern games milks up the same mechanics just to stretech gameplay time. I recently played Sniper Elite v2 remastered and Gato Roboto, very good games but dropped both because i felt that when I hitted 40% or 60% of the game I already had the experience that I wanted, and that's because if I game because the plot I rather watch a movie or read a book. I knew that in Sniper Elite I had to beat 3 more missions the same way I beated the other 8, so I dropped, the game mechanics were fun but the plot didn't hook me. My rule is that when a game after 3 hours of gameplay don't hook me up I just drop the game, it served it's purpose to having fun with it.

I actually am unable to force myself through a game. It either grasps me or it doesn't. Usually if it doesn't - it won't, ever.
But there are traps. Sometimes the game will grasp me from the beginning, and totally. But after an hour or two, the game will show more of itself and unfortunaly more often than not it will also show some pretty huge, for me, flaws. But yeah, if you feel the game is 120% in sync with you, that's the cue for you that it's your game.
My advice? Try the games out, however you can. I do it and I see no shame in it - simply because: 1) if I don't try it at all, I still won't buy it out of curiosity, no matter what - I stepped into traps too often to repeat the same mistake 2) if I DO try it, even with the "shameful" method, there is a chance that the game will be 100% for me and I will end up buying it - and this method worked many times, so I ended up being happy and the devs ended up being happy. Now, I don't advocate to do this to actually play games, it's just a way of demoing games that have no demos available - and it's my opinion that every game should have a demo, because you CANNOT possibly know if you actually WANT to play the game before you actually play it.

I'm a chronic game switcher, I play like 20 games at the same time. Like I know I love Yakuza, but 11 games is a lot, I come and go so I don't experience burnout, I finished 0, LAD and Judgment and am halway through Kiwami and Lost Judgment. I know for sure I will eventually play them all. I started Trials In the Skies, and got like 30h or so in it and rotated it, I added voice acting mod which while adding so.much.character into the game it also slowed it so much it became unberable, I had to rotate. I started Tales Of Arisa becasue I used to play some Tales games back in snes era, it's good but not priority, I have like 15-20h in that. I have ongoing Fire Emblem Engage playthrough, because I'm a vet fan with 20 years of investment, but I want to savour the gameplay and skip the story, I play a map here and there when I have an itch. I still have to finish Elden Ring, that one is on ice for a year, I have to go to face Malenia but I'm afraid and put that off, 220? h in. I'm 103h into Persona 5 Royal which I plan to come back to, I switched to SMT Nocturne as I wanted more distiled SMT gameplay, got over 30h into that but put it on ice as I had to restart the game as I didn't check the box to play expanded version with Matador and Demi fiends and have to restart

Yeah I hardly ever force myself to finish games. I need a very good reason to keep playing a game I really don't like.
Currently, I'm taking a big break from buying new Destiny 2 seasons cause the game is in the worst spot it's ever been, so no more. I finally dropped Genshin so I didn't have a job in the form of a game I hardly enjoyed anyway.
But Nier Replicant was one game I felt I needed to finish this year despite absolutely hating it. I dropped it last year, but I felt bad not finishing it cause I love Automata so much. I heard there was a new E route, and it seemed interesting, so I forced myself to play the whole game, and honestly, it was worth it. The E route, being modern, was actually incredibly well written and fun.

If I'm ever feeling bored during this second session, I simply drop the game, accept the fact that it's not for me and move on to another one on my backlog of games I'm interested in.

When I play a game, I usually follow the main story while doing some side things here and there
And at that point, I had thought that I was going through the game so quick that I missed a lot of what it had to offer
But when I tried to explore elsewhere, it just didn't interest me anymore
And when I got stuck on a puzzle or something it felt like i was wasting time

The actual problem is thats games are becoming repetitive and contains so many dialogs and cut scenes like bro its a game
    "interactive entertainment"
Not a movie, and the developers these days are focusing in to casual gamers not the hard core one's and that what makes the games these days so easy to play thought by them that it will make more plays play the game but it's actually the opposite,
I've played so many story based games like rdr2 and tlou1
So now when i played cyberpunk 2077 i felt like this is so repetitive an slow and easy,
And i guess thats the thing that made "from software" beloved cuz its dealing with you as a human being by giving "real" challenges and such a solid gameplay, for me the game that made me love video games again in 2021 are sekiro and I'd really recommend it and its ain't that hard its just the people that became soft and casual games

I've found that I play games in a weird fashion. (At least I find it weird). I will go through phases of genre types in games. Maybe for a month or 2, im really into RPGs. Then I'll randomly flip a switch and want to play stealth games. I had such a huge stealth game itch not long ago, that I 100% Dishonored. I then stopped playing it, lmao. Sometimes, I want strategy games, or shooters. I don't feel like I even need to explain this feeling, but the most sure I can be of what I will want to play in a given year is Skyrim. Typically at the same time around Christmas, every single year, I dump another 70-250 hours into skyrim and dip. Lol

I havent watch/finished an Anime in a while. Perhaps its time to finish some Anime in order to not get the burnout again from Games.

I mean, I'll drop a game if I'm genuinely NOT having fun. But as long as it's decently enjoyable, I'm gonna keep going. Because yeah, like you said, rapidly cycling through 15 games just cuz they aren't immediately complete fire is just gonna make you go broke. frfr

I enjoying linear games or racing , but nowadays every game is Open World and not many racing games are coming out. like resident evil village is great. God of war or Portal 2, I'm still enjoying the COD story. Metro Series etc.
Just style a small map and go from point A to point B. That's it, I don't need to run around the map for hours looking for something.
Older games have given me even more gameplay. Nowadays I can only watch the in-game video and play 3 hours of it.
