I find this argument kind of lacking. The individual chooses to remain blind to a game or if they want to start looking into it. Its very easy to avoid something you dont want to see. KH3 was a game that i didnt want to know anything about but that was a horrible choice. I wish i had read up on it before i bought it. That game was a disappointment. Point being, i was able to avoid being informed on the game by not looking for it.

@@scarabdust The term “psychological horror” can mean anything that relates to disturbing themes, but the main twist of the game is that it becomes glitchy and sentient -breaks the 4th wall-( which is what this vid shows here). I think part of the magic is that the game spends 2-3 hours being an actual (non-horror) dating sim, so when stuff started to get glitchy and messed-up, it’s really meant to take you by surprise. You first think that the dark part is the ending of your 1st playthrough, and may go to for your 2nd to avoid it from happening… and then game says NOPE and decides to not hold back anymore.
I played the game when it was still new and only a handful of youtubers put out their first episode/s of their playthrough , so maybe it was different experience compared to now where everyone knows to some extent that DDLC is culturally accepted as a horror game.

@@bananacakesmckanzee7290 We have the context of the game though, so we know what the dark glitchy stuff means when we see screenshots or screencaps. A completely new player wouldn't really take away anything from the screencap in the video--other than, again, that the game gets dark and isn't a normal dating sim. An actual spoiler would be like a screenshot of Sayori hanging herself or something, not something that has zero context.

I would say a counterpoint is, if you just don't have the time. If you're older and work and don't have the luxury of spending hours discovering all the secrets in a game, it's okay to spoil yourself a little. That was one way I held myself back. I wasn't enjoying games because I didn't allow myself to look up some of the secrets and easter eggs that sometimes make the whole game fun. And I get a terrible feeling of missing out. Hollow Knight and many metroidvania/puzzle/exploration games work partly because the "frustration" you feel just makes the success feel better. But sure, before completely giving up a game, looking something up carefully might be worth it. Asking friends who already played that game for a hint might work even better because they won't spoil half of the game.

  • @NathanAndYair
    @NathanAndYair 2 ปีที่แล้ว +898

Here’s the thing. I completely 100% agree with you. But, the thing is, people have fun in different ways. When my dad was younger and playing the first Legend of Zelda game, he and his friends would meet up and tell each other about all the new things they’d found and all the dungeons they’d managed to solve. They actually wrote all of their findings in a journal and even had maps of the game world. My point is, whenever one of them got stuck, they would go ask the other person for help, and they went back and forth like this until, eventually, they beat the game. I think that would enhance the experience. My dad even said he felt like he would’ve had less fun with the game had someone not been there to help him through it. I’m not saying everyone has to play like this, I’m just saying that for some people, it’s more fun to ask for help.

    • @zoki4291
      @zoki4291 2 ปีที่แล้ว +100

This, but I also think that it's also about what the game is as well. Undertale? Toby Fox had trouble making a trailer because almost every instance would count as huge spoilers. Legend of Zelda? Apparently developers themselves wanted the game to be played like your dad played, a game with a pure sense of adventure with your friends, same with Pokemon. Hollow Knight meanwhile, similar to Undertale, is definitely not a game you want spoiled in majority of context, Silksong pretty much too.
Rain World, on the other hand, is what I find a very interesting experience: on one end, it's better you enter in blind because it's an experience trying to survive in that enviorment; on the other end looking up some walkthroughs, asking for help and spoiling a bit about where to go and what you will find is something you can do because the game can be ruthless and you must learn on your own. I looked up control and movement walkthroughs as well as spoilt myself with the existence of characters and creatures, as well the entire playthrough of the hard difficulty, but that barely ruined the fun I had with the game because the game has so much that you are driven to replay it and replay it for the experience alone. I do not suggest spoiling yourself fully (especially the storyline), but I do encourage you if you want some help by spoiling yourself.
So in few words, yeah, it's not just about the player but it's also what kind of game are you playing.

@@dopaminecloud yeah, but my point wasn’t that asking friends for help makes games more fun, my point was that people all have fun in different ways. I feel you on this, it's ruined far too many classic games I think I'd otherwise be able to properly appreciate - partly due to permanently missable content in games like Final Fantasy 7. So recently, I played one of these older games I'd yet to beat because of this, Vandal Hearts (great game, though unfortunately and unrightly not listed on the Playstation Store). This time, though, I went after secrets I'd remembered, but elected to not look anything else up about the game. So I enjoyed the ride, saw how the game ended, and it was beautiful; ended up being worth it.
The advice I have for you is to just not give a crap about other people's experiences with games and just find your own path, because what a good game gives you shouldn't rely on what other people enjoyed about it. If you like the game enough that you'll want to play it again some other time, _then_ try and find stuff you didn't know about - maybe even keep a notebook or something if you're a completionist, so you can note down stuff you don't want to miss next time.

I think there's a balance to be had. I'll try my damnedest to go into a game blind and explore the world and solve puzzles with fresh eyes, especially if there's a heavy narrative focus I don't want to spoil, but with the limited amount of time for games I sometimes find myself with, there are instances where I'm just going to swallow my pride if it means that looking up a quick answer means I save myself the effort of backtracking through the entire game world combing every nook and cranny for the one hidden key item I somehow missed thirty hours back. Stuff like that is what ruined CoD zombies for me (and the lead director leaving while Activision was doing Activision things). When I finished the WaW campaign with my cousin in 2008 and we got dropped into zombies it was a magical moment. Not knowing what to do, the slow build up of zombies (that does make it hard to go back to now). And every game kept expanding on that. Load into a new map without knowing anything and just figure it out. They were good at adding more mechanics and every map was more fun than the last while slowly building up this story. Use the environment and world building to solve the puzzles and survive. Once Black Ops 3 came around, there was a dedicated community and all of a sudden every dlc map that came out was completely solved and everything about it discovered by the end of the week, I think in one case it took 12 hours. It was fun to be a part of a large community all trying to discover things but waiting 2-3 months just to spend less than a week playing each dlc eventually wasn’t fun. I don’t want every map to just be “look up the 30 minute guide.” And I think the mentality of just watching the TH-camrs solve everything in a day (in some cases they got early access to dlc) kinda ruined my enjoyment going forward. I bought WWII and it was such a breath of fresh air to have hints in game but you didn’t need to go to TH-cam. Cold War was similar, it never felt like I needed to go to TH-cam and I could just figure it out slowly with my friends by putting our brains together. Keep in mind, I did enjoy black ops 3 a lot, to the point that it’s one of my favourite cod games even though I’ve been around since 2008, but my love for zombies did not continue into black ops 4. I didn’t want that same experience. I just want to play a game, occasionally look something up if I’m brain dead or the developers made a bad puzzle (Uncharted 3 light room), but mostly just experience it without the help of others.

The game has yet to be sold, and people are already acting like it's been released and releasing tips, tricks, lore, etc, for a game that they don't have access to. They are essentially lying all for the sake of getting that sweet, sweet youtube money by milking as much of it out of the title drop as they can. The only ones I forgive are the trailer analysis videos because that's content made from content avaliable, but imagine you never heard about the game until you saw one of these "tears of the kingdom tips" videos and then looked up the game only to find out that its not even released. I'm just disappointed in how many people in the Zelda community are willing to, essentially, lie and pretend that they're in the know to the rest of the community all for the youtube cash.

I agree with you fundamentally that games are best enjoyed without assistance, and that seeking assistance should really be reserved for when you're very frustrated. However, on the other hand... Because after people play through the game whilst being assisted at all times ,their opinion might differ from the one they would have if they played without assistance. You don't go watch a horror movie just to get a spreadsheet off a web with jumpscare times. That in turn affects what video game producers create. If you wanna cater to a spreadsheet-hold-my-hand-daddy you will create a different, possibly more boring game rather than creating a game designed with playing it with no assistance in mind. People also often think less about the things they understand and more of themselvs the more experienced they are. I m sure you know the Dunning-Krueger effect. Such people when faced with reality for example, encountering a hard boss will experience a lot of frustration, lots more than the standard player possibly.

Fromsoft games are notorious for being very conservative with hints. Sometimes it works, but sometimes entire quest lines have to be abandoned because the NPC changes to a completely new location on a massive map
So I had to find these 2 medallions. After days of searching the map, I decided to quit for a few months. Getting tired of going through forts and caves only to find a magic wand or a useless talisman. Was I missing something? A clue? Did someone explain where they were but I zoned out? I've talked to every npc in the hold, but no luck.
So I looked it up. They're in 2 random forts at opposite sides of the map. No clues. Just 2 tiny forts carrying items essential to progress.
After this I started to get more liberal with my internet usage. It started with looking up some smithing stones, maybe a weapon teirlist, but by the time I got to the final boss, I created a build specifically to hunt him down. This forced me to go on a scavenger hunt of quest lines I could never find on my own. And I ended up exploring and enjoying more of the game than I ever could have blind.

Breath of the Wild was the game that taught me just how much looking stuff up can ruin a gaming experience. I went into the game completely blind and I only bought it because it was one of like 3 games on Switch at launch. Figuring out the puzzles and simply exploring the world all on my own made it feel like *I* was presonally discovering all of this stuff. If I couldn't figure something out, I'd go exploring in the area or talk to nearby NPCs to see if they could clue me in. It felt super immersive to try and figure things out using only the tools presented to me within the game world itself. It was so cool the first time I realized I could equip the flame sword to keep myself warm in the cold regions instead of eating the peppers. I never looked anything up for that game and ended up having one of my greatest gaming experiences of all time as a result. All of my friends played the game by looking everything up the second something became difficult, and while I'm sure they enjoyed the game very much, I feel like they really soured their own experience as a result.

Not that I checked for guides or ask questions, but after playing DS3 (yeah, I played that one first) I read and watched a shit ton of Dark Souls lore to the point where Dark Souls 1 wasn't really new for me, which sucks because I regret doing that to this day.

Pro-tip for _all_ video game obstacles (as well as real life, really): if what you’re doing is not producing the results you’re looking for, try something else.
Chances are you’ll find yourself getting closer to the answer, or, at the very least, you won’t feel like you’re stuck standing there until you can think up the solution by sheer chance. That will help alleviate the sensation that the game is “wasting your time”, as people like to describe it.

@@MisterIncog There are two hints in the game which may help.
      Hint 1:
There is a single Froggit in the ruins who tells you that you may need to one day spare a monster whose name is not yellow or pink. This hint is somewhat obscure and easy to miss.
      Hint 2:
If Toriel has been killed in a previous run, any attempt at talking to her after the first time results in the narrator quote "Can you show mercy without fighting or running away...?". This hint is not easy to miss. A player fighting Toriel after having killed her is obviously going to be looking for a way to spare her, as there is no other reason to replay the fight. The only option they have besides fighting is talking. And talking shows this hint. If the player tries to talk repeatedly, the hint is shown repeatedly. You would have to have an exceptionally thick skull for you not to get that you're supposed to spare her.

I mentally weigh the amount of frustration I am currently facing at a puzzle/obstacle vs the lack of accomplishment I will feel by looking an answer up, and look for an answer online once the frustration exceeds the latter. Just stepping away from the game and coming back later with a cleared head is a better solution, but I have a hard time leaving something like that unsolved, even if just temporarily. I’m sure that’s a common feeling.

And also the ability to realize that sometimes I’m just a dumbass who gets stuck in a normal ass room because I decided the exit point couldn’t possibly be right because it was slightly high and my character could possibly jump up there (I could in fact jump up there)

I agree looking up answers is usually bad, but sometimes being able to get *hints* is good. Especially for some of your examples, where just knowing “not a glitch” would be good. Because glitches *happen.*
My first playthrough of the original Portal, my graphics settings were messed up somehow, and all the glass looked opaque. It’s surprisingly easy to play a lot of the game that way, not realize it’s not supposed to have frosted glass, and miss important parts of the experience.

I've literally done the same thing where I sit with my friend / bf and just watch them and maybe gently nudge them. I am currently playing Hollow Knight and though I have spoiled myself quite some lore because I am hungry for lore and I watched someone guide me through Fungal Wastes, because I had absolutely no clue how to navigate that terrain. I did however venture off and explore some other place in Fungal Wastes while the person in the video was explaining some other area in Fungal Wastes. I still feel like my Hollow Knight experience is uniquely my own and nobody can spoil how exactly I'm playing it. Besides, the community has managed to fool me with some things (Grubfather) and I am hoping that I wasn’t lied to about a way to save a certain someone with a flower.
I think why my playthrough experience in HK feels isolated from everyone else's is just how the map is and I have often ventured out of map bounds and lost my ways and had to refind them or die. I wouldn't look up someone explaining how to beat Hornet in Greenpath or No Eyes, but I think I will definitely look for guidance it I ever face Radiance because I am scared and I would also do so if I had no clue who Radiance was and accidentally stumbled into the fight. My fingers would immediately fly over to google after dying a couple of times without progress or not because I am getting too obsessed with beating Radiance so I would keep at it until my hands would be in literal pain after doing all the moves xD

Tears of the Kingdom ends up being a surprising antidote to this. In some way it's an utter completionists nightmare as there's just constantly so many things to do, everywhere and all of the time. Most of the time there's several things in sight to do or collect and by the time you get to any of them you've come across several more. It's so much that it turns back on itself and just makes me feel it's fine to miss stuff.

I got as far as I could in Hollow Knight without looking anything up, took a massive break, then got back into it after a conversation at a game store while buying a different game. When I picked it back up again I did manage to find areas I hadn't before just because I had fresher eyes, but I did look up how to defeat bosses once I died enough to warrant it. It was also helpful to figure out what I had missed, but I did a pretty decent job of not spoiling things for myself for the most part? When I really started living by the map was when I realized I needed nail upgrades and wanted more charm notches. Late game you've explored most of it anyway so it becomes about capturing those details. I think metroidvanias might be my favorite genre, though that might be presumptuous only because my other experience really only adds up to a couple of DS castlevanias. I'm BAD AT GAMES though, so Hollow Knight I was persistent with because I felt if I could beat such a famously challenging game, I could develop a skill that would prepare me to enjoy the genre more. And I finally managed to beat Radiance so. Overall I'm very happy with my gaming experience, and have already made a new save with which to apply all I've learned.

I went through most of the game blind. But I started realizing there were things that I wouldnt have even thought to check if I didn't look it up. I want to fight every boss, and thoroughly explore every area. I just look up the very non obvious things. Just so I can have the full experience of the game

Yeah, I kinda did the same thing. Like I KNOW that there is something in THAT spot but I don't know how to get there please help me Hollow Knight wiki. Also I would oftentimes rely on the map too much and ignore the areas that were marked as discovered, which made it very difficult for me to find the love key and king's brand.

A recent incident of this exact thing that irritated me to NO end was right after Elden Ring was released, and still probably to this day people leave the opening area and just get brain damage, because they don't understand the concept of just seeing something and deciding to check it out. Like, twitter, reddit, forums were filled with people not only confused, but saying the game was straight up bad because it didn't immediately tell you what to do with a bright shining beacon

I think this may stem also from people with situations like mine. I work full time, only get a day or two off each week and so I want to make the most of that time. That means finishing games somewhat quickly and trying not to "waste" too much time in a game when I could be done and onto the next one already. This means if I run into a real wall I do tend to just Google the answer because there's just never enough time anymore. Occasionally I do try to go in blind, so to speak, but even that's hard to do on games nowadays with all the stuff you end up stumbling across by accident on TH-cam and the like.

Same for me. But I used to be like others here when I wasn't so busy. Was born in '84 and have been a gamer most of my life, so I understand the value of gaming without the answers to everything. I'm now a software programmer making a career change into bioinformatics while concurrently getting a degree in biotechnology. Even still, I wouldn't spoil most of the things in this video. But if I encounter a really hard puzzle I've spent far to much time on, I'll just google and pass it unlike in the old days when id just drudge through it for hours. Life changes, people change, priorities change. And if im being honest, I play games nowadays more for relaxation than challenge like I used to, so "ruining" a challenge isn't exactly a big deal for me anymore. I envy those who have the time to play like I used too though!

About Hollow Knight: (played it first time a few months ago, completely blind)
I was not able to get out of the first region. I went from one Roadblock on one side to another one on the other side for quite a while and explored EVERYthing without finding where to go on. Had to look up a guide to get on, 'cause I was to stupid.
That guy/boss you described. Saw him once, didn't reach him, came back later, didn't find him again. Never found out, what it was (until now).
Some things you HAVE to ask in this game. NEVER in my life would I have found out myself, how to start Grimm DLC.
I get it. I fully support your point. Instantly asking for directions is stupid. BUT some might just be people who genuinly want to know how to reach sth, because they cant figure it out on there own, but want to keep playing...
If you figure everything out on your own, good for you. I'm not that smart, but still love the game. I need a guide once in a while :)

See, that's good and even a hardcore player like me does that, because i dont really have time anymore to hit my head on a wall for hours to discover everything. But when you start googling things at the first obstacle, why even play the game, better watch someone else do it.

  • @Omnidragon00

Despite agreeing with this argument, I will add one defense:
Sometimes looking things up after spending a lot of time on your own is very beneficial. When I'm tired of looking for that collectible even though I searched every corner three times, it helps to watch a video to save time and move on.
Also guides can be helpful if you use them the right way. Often times, I'm stuck because I can't creatively connect two techniques together. But after watching someone do it, it opens up a whole new way to play for me because I now know I can use this combo for future situations.

I’m really bad about doing this exact thing, especially with books. I’ve been reading the stormlight archive, and as weird as it is to say, it’s probably the first time since I was a kid that I’ve read a series completely blind, without ever looking up the questions that were absolutely burning inside me. As a consequence, the payoff has been so fucking rewarding in each of the books, especially when my own predictions turn out to be true
