Don't even bother with the AES...speaking as a former owner, you should totally go with an MVS if you decide you must go one way or the other. The biggest issue I have with the home carts is you're limited to a 4-credit setup upon startup or until game over. Gets to be a real pain in the ass when you're playing harder games (like the Metal Slug series) or games with friends, and that isn't even getting into the prices!
They mentioned renting the helicopter game Joe covered, I believe it was the first game he covered. The only problem is I only ever saw one store EVER have Neo Geo games for rent! It was a random Mom&Poop style place on Long Beach Island here in New Jersey, and they only had 8 AES games available for rent, and 12 NGCD games, 2 of the AES games were Metal Slugs, and 2 were King of Fighters games. I'll always remember this because I saw these huge cases on the shelf with only one rented out, and asked the guy behind the counter what they were, and he yelled "They're Neo Geo games Bud!! A bunch of kids here on the island own them, and asked us to carry them, we got the CD games first, and they were apparently the wrong kind, it took almost a year to recoup the cost of those bricks". This was back in the summer of 1996, and I was just there looking for a SNES game to rent, which they had TONS of, and a VHS or two. Looking back I always think how cool it was for them to have gone out of their way to carry NG AES games to rent for kids there, I could see perhaps carrying games for the CD unit if enough demand was there, but those expensive ass AES cartridges? They had to have gotten the idea that the system was gonna be one of the next big things in gaming, and after getting those first 8, realized it was some niche rich person thing so they cut it off there. I wonder what happened to the games they had, if they sold em off in store before inevitably going out of business like every rental store, or if they sold them privately on EBay or something like that. Either way, they HAD to be one of only a handful of places to ever carry at least AES games, if not both them and the Neo Geo CD games as well. They were clearly some cool people, cause they also had really good SNES games like Aero Fighters, and Hagane which was the only time I ever actually played the cartridges of either of those games, and they had really good Genesis games too. Miss that place.
Wow, I'm amazed they got them that late into the system's lifespan. As cool as it was to own one, in all honesty the best games of the SNES absolutely dwarf the best of the Neo. Give me classic Super Mario Kart alone over any of the Metal Slugs/fighting games. Fatal Fury Special was amazing, but even then most of the games received arcade-perfect/enhanced ports, like the PS2 anthologies.
+greenskiis I totally agree, you're a fucking awesome person. There is so much more varied fun to be had on the SNES than there is to be had on the AES and MVS, which I have emulated for years on a Frankensteined cabinet my brother built. But my first console before I got big into the Sega 32x/Genesis, and later the Saturn, Dreamcast, and lastly the original XBox, that was my own and not my Dads NES, was indeed the SNES. I built up a library of Almost 200 games buying them SO cheap in the early 2000s and there is just so much damn fun to be had on that system! The Neo Geos are great for what they are and all, especially if you're big into fighting games, which I do admittedly love, but the variety on the platform is just unfortunately not there...
As being in a family that ran arcades, the main reason why the home games were 'nearly' identical to the arcade counterparts was because they were in fact the same ROM. Internal dip switches in the arcade or home console let the arcade board/cartridge function on it's respective setups. The few games that appeared somewhat different a few of the fighting games, samurai showdown and some of the KOF games. When detecting the game was being run on a home system, some, censorship appared. Such as blood turned to white sweat in Samurai Showdown and Mai loosing some of her... bouncing assets. Yeah, the fact the cart was basically an arcade board that contained many hardware assets was a reason the carts were sooooo expensive. They didn't need to deal with image compression to fit image data from tiny 2, 4, or even 16 meg ROM to video RAM. Each cart just crammed a crap ton of ROM and let the video handler go nuts with it.
The mvs systems censored the games when the console region was set to America and regions where censorship was needed. Not because it was set to home..
You are right, many peolple think that Neo-Geo MVS and Neo-Geo AES use different roms, but the real thing is what you said, they use the same rom. It's the system (AES or MVS) that change the game into arcade or console version when it's loaded.

The Neo Geo had a VERY unusual architecture for its time. It was a 16-bit system but it didn't use backgrounds or tiles at all. EVERYTHING is a sprite, and it is virtually unlimited in what it can do with them (to the extent that it's easy to make background layers out of sprites). This is why it did parallax, background zooming, and scaling so well. It wasn't possible to do the kinds of stuff that it could do on a regular home console until the Saturn came out. I only recently got an AES with Magician Lord, World Heroes, and Samurai Spirits (also known as Showdown). Unfortunately, as I was rearranging my cables, I accidentally plugged the AES power supply into the Retron 5 and friend both the Retron 5 and the power adapter for my AES. Even worse luck, I didn't notice something was wrong until a minute or two AFTER I plugged it back into my AES. Since the adapter is $90, I have no way of knowing if I fried my AES as well. That was 2 weeks ago. I'm still pretty upset :(. I'm gonna go cry now. Anyway, thanks for the video guys. Love your stuff. Keep up the good work!
Hey you forgot Last Resort, Soccer Brawl, Super Baseball 2020, Spin Master, Ninja Commando, Ninja Combat, Art of Fighting, King of Monsters, Alpha Mission II, Mutation Nation, Pulstar, Top Hunter Roddy & Cathy.
Most of the games mentioned in this video are on the Neo-Geo Mini, but there's a twist. The Japanese version has all the King of Fighters games while the International version features all the Metal Slug games, and the limited edition holiday variation features a mix of both versions with a handful of games that were neither in the Japanese nor the International versions such as Ninja Combat, Soccer Brawl, League Bowling and The Super Spy.
@@bighands69 That was what the whole system was originally intended for - renting. Until SNK saw what people (well some) were ready to pay to own one...
Lapsed Neo Geo addict here. First off, loved this episode. You chose some interesting titles, for sure :) I had a SNES back in the day and loved Street Fighter II but when I saw Samurai Shodown it just blew me away. From that moment I knew I had to have one. But then I saw the prices and that was the end of that. However, my prayers were answered (somewhat) when the Neo Geo CD was announced and the games prices were much more respectable (as long as you could put up with the loading times). I didn't care; I got a Neo Geo CD the day they were released in the UK and I loved it. I did eventually move onto an AES. Got it from a store in London and the thing was kept behind a metal cage lol (Electronics Boutique used to have their retro section downstairs, if I remember correctly). Picked up one of the early King of the Fighters game with it (£100) and played the hell out of it. Picked up quite a few games for it via eBay and I'm glad I did; a lot of the games have rocketed up in price. This in turn led me to have a consolized-MVS made (a 1-Slot - yeah, I know, I know!). This meant I could play the Metal Slug games and other expensive titles. Also, there was something awesome about MVS carts. They often came battered and invariable condition but I loved the thought that they had been in some arcade machine and now, here I was, playing them at home :) Seeing this episode brought back so many great memories for me. I want to get my AES/MVS out now because they are still boxed and hopefully working. Some of my favourite games included: Samurai Shodown, Viewpoint, World Heroes, Wind Jammers, Last Resort, Top Hunter, Metal Slug and Fatal Fury Special. I could ramble on for a lot longer, but I won't :) HZ
Neo geo was like a myth or a Bigfoot legend back in my day I never knew anyone who had one but there was always someone that knew someone that had one or knew someone that knew someone that had one lol and it always sounded so cool. Arcade games at home no half ass versions but I never got to play one to this day
+Nikola Dietmar Krapp I also dreamed of owning one and bought one with my first paycheck. I owned one before I bought the Snes but it was really limited in that it only offered arcade games. No RPG or deeper action games. Just shallow great looking games.

Strange the left out titles such as Magician Lord, Neo Geo Version of Puzzle Bobble 2 and Cyber-Lip. For sports game I wish the could have mention Basbeball Stars 2, Super sidekicks, Football Frenzy and League Bowling. I realize they probably mention their top picks, which understandable, but I thought I would put these titles out as honor mentions.
seems like the neo geo just had some of the best lineup straight out of arcade!
It was just all arcade games. I owned one but always felt that the Snes was better all round but was no where near as powerful due to the arcade cartridges of the Neo geo.
Wow that was great. Never seen someone cover that system so well. Makes me want one. I know I've seen the arcades of it before many moons ago but never seen the home console .
So powerful of a 16 bit console that only the next gen 32/64 bit consoles could make perfect ports!!!!!!!!
lol no, perfect NeoGeo ports started with the Dreamcast
just got a consolized mvs and this video made my day. you guys are awesome.
Just brilliant. 10/10 Chaps. Keep up the good work.
+Chris Lover Just brilliant 0-1 Bournemouth. Keep up the bad work.
+BoloYung. lol really become use to this bad season, taking it all in stride good sir. ;)

+PAINNN666 I like the second revision better PAINNN.
neo turf masters is more fun than any golf game has the right to be
The obscene amounts of MEGA POWER in this episode left me walking with a limp
If you have a Neo-Geo AES, then there is no need to get a Neo-Geo CD or a Neo-Geo CDZ.
the end of the video is hilarious
"Get away from me you filthy port!"
"Daaaaddyyyy!"
You guys are really, really good. I hope you know that.
Metal Slug's pixel art is so damn cool that companies are still launching Metal Slug games using those sprites.
+eng3d The Metal Slug mobile game is really fun. If you are a Metal Slug fan or love that art style, it's all official SNK animations of hundreds of enemy types.
Gunstar heroes can eat their dust
One of my favorite videos from this channel about one of my favorite consoles!
Grandma, stop hoarding Neo Geo games in your attic, you can't take them with you!
Grandma dies and they find neo turf masters crammed in the couch cushions.
Oh boy! I'll go right down to my local Blockbuster and rent that game just like you recommended!
What is this? 44 minutes of awesomeness? I approve.
mom: grandma's dead.
dad: yes! we get sundays back kids!
me: i found blazing star
everyone: WHOOHOO!
Holy crap, this is an amazing episode. Thanks for the work you put into it.
I would definitely watch a Game Sack documentary dedicated entirely to the AES. This episode I felt was way too short. Thank you again for the great coverage.
Great to see your take on the Neo Geo, but -"You need to make sure that you have at least ALL of the Metal Slugs if you have a Neo Geo" =D There are so many other cool games that you didn't cover, hope to see some of those in future videos.
+GadgetUK164
Agreed kind sir!
Too many popular titles that were left out. Maybe it was because of time.
+Puresox333
Yes, that's true. I try to be impartial and if a part 2 does exist later on, I'll gladly view their video!.
Thank you for the reply!
Anthony...
GadgetUK164 - Retro Gaming Repairs & Mods You can get away with playing MSX and not MS2 to be honest. What is there? Maybe 5% difference in them and MSX runs smoother as well.
You would need to be Bill Gates to own all of the Metal slugs.
@@bighands69 Correction: You would need to be Jeff Bezos to afford Metal Slug 5 alone.
It's awesome being able to play many of these titles anywhere I want on Nintendo Switch! My favorite is Pulstar (featured in your Neo Geo CD video).
and thank you for making Game Sack!
Probably your best Episode yet (love those hardware based episodes) ... never new that there were more than 3-non fighting games for the system ... it looks suddenly a lot more interesting
So Joe likes playing Mai on Fatal Fury...I wonder what jiggled his fancy toward that character.
+Zeldas Champion
His penis, no doubt.
+Zeldas Champion *_Me Bouncy_*
+Zeldas Champion I kinda prefer Mary more.
+Zeldas Champion Confirmed for yellow fever
I prefer Sotaku
I never even knew the Neo geo existed back in the 90s. But I'm starting to get to know its games thanks to Retropie. Shock troopers and the Metal slug games are a blast to play and still look gorgeous with the scanlines filter enabled.
No windjammers, FOR SHAME!!!!!
KojaqVidya dude! this game is so expensive! probably thousands of dollars!
Best intro ever. Came back to watch the episode again just for the intro lolol
Hey Game Sack
Hey.
+Game Sack Can I get a ride home? Cars on the fritz again
heyitsme
I'll fax you some bus tokens.
+Game Sack thanks!
+Game Sack helping kids with bubonic plagues and faxing bus tokens to need viewers and spending Thanksgiving with me....you guys are the best...thank you GameSack
I bought I Japanese metal slug back in 2006 because I remember it from the arcade!! I pay $500 dollars with a console and a controller! How the console alone worth $500 and the game is worth 30 times what I paid!
I wish to back in time and buy them all
What a fantastic episode!
The Neo Geo looks really good. I always loved the animation of games like Neo Turfmasters and Metal Slug.
Bonus!
Another Great show Dave and Joe, these were some great games, and this was a great trip through nostalgia.
Hey, I know a place that has a Neo-Geo MVS with metal slug, samurai showdown and 2 others.
that was quite possibly the best system intro you guys have EVER done! MEGA POWAAAAAA!
Kzero did it die?
Mimi Grace Yep =\
330 MEGA POWER?!? That's almost half of 1 whole God damn Jiggawatt!
Hey you forgot Last Resort, Soccer Brawl, Super Baseball 2020, Spin Master, Ninja Commando, Ninja Combat, Art of Fighting, King of Monsters, Alpha Mission II, Mutation Nation, Pulstar, Top Hunter Roddy & Cathy.
+ThumbdownMan They have covered a few of those titles in the past.
Another great video from Joe and Dave. This makes my day!
The Mega Power,
"IT'S OVER 9000!!!"
Your throat has to be sore after that intro Joe
Cody Reynolds yeah mate... told cody.
Awesome episode! I've got an MVS 4 Slot machine and 9 games and I absolutely love it.
Love the suggestion to rent the dinosaur game from Blockbuster or Hollywood Video... sad that such a thing isn't possible anymore. :(
I didnt even know you could rent these games anywhere.
Are you sure you could rent the games?
@@bighands69 That was what the whole system was originally intended for - renting. Until SNK saw what people (well some) were ready to pay to own one...
@@Gunh3d1
But could games be easily rented from the likes of blockbusters. I just cannot remember.
That ending had me in stitches. Good system review guys.
They often came battered and invariable condition but I loved the thought that they had been in some arcade machine and now, here I was, playing them at home :)
Seeing this episode brought back so many great memories for me.
Game Sack has come so far. The best youtube video game channel right now.
I have a neo geo MVS machine and I love it!
Great overview! You guys deserve much more subscribers and views than you're getting.
Neo geo was like a myth or a Bigfoot legend back in my day I never knew anyone who had one but there was always someone that knew someone that had one or knew someone that knew someone that had one lol and it always sounded so cool. Arcade games at home no half ass versions but I never got to play one to this day
That intro though..... Joe, I think you scared me a bit! Lol
A great watch, especially now literally all of these are on the Nintendo Switch now thanks to the good guys at Hamster
Too bad you didn't cover SVC Chaos SNK Vs Capcom
Tien_Gouki make a full time job if you wanna buy expensive neo geo.
I love the after credit sketch! And i love how the MVS and AES look. I totally want to get one of those systems, one of these days...
Weenie System Lol! I love my MVS, and the games are priced pretty reasonable compared to the AES.
@13:54 Yeah, the developers had inside info on the planned 911 event.
Blast Processing, CRY YOUR HEART OUT
I've watched this episode several times and it never fails to bring a huge goofy grin across my face
the best 16bit homeconsole. i dreamt of this thing as a kid, while still being satisfied playing on my SNES.
+Nikola Dietmar Krapp
I also dreamed of owning one and bought one with my first paycheck. I owned one before I bought the Snes but it was really limited in that it only offered arcade games. No RPG or deeper action games. Just shallow great looking games.
Wow, this was the longest episode of Game Sack yet. 44:01 MEGA POWER! Great episode.
Best system of all time, and the most affordable.
Wow. Im a 90s kid and I never heard of like... 75% of the games in this list. Massive props for this video. Looking forward to more!
What do I think about the Neo Geo? *Hugs my MVS 2 slot Big Red*
From what I hear, the fewer slots the better. I hear the 6 slots can be kind of problematic.
+Game Sack I've got a 4 slot and only just replaced the original (and well worn) mainboard. Found another 4 slot and it seems to be sweet! Heard 6 slot was a problem child for sure though.
_*fingers AES cartridge slot while rubbing composite cable plugs like nipples_
+noisyturtle
Composite video cables? Ew.
Dave Bladegun well I can't roll an S-video hole between my fingers, now can I?
This is also the first video by Game Sack that I've seen. Seen several since last week. Keep up the great work, guys!
LOL THE MOST POWERFUL SYSTEM EVER!!!! Gotta have fun with those Neo Geo elitist. I decided to collect for the MVS since AES is too pricey. I'm going for the complete MVS set. Just missing 1 more... Pleasure Goal.
Galaxy Fight is notable because you can go into the operator menu and set the round timer to one second, which turns the game into DiveKick.
I own AES and I have 27 games, some of them are rare and cost a lot of money, especial Samurai Shodown 5 Special
Thanks for the vid. I liked that you covered many of the lesser known titles too, not just the ones every knows. I will say Blazing Star doesn't have much slowdown at all. But you guys seem to know more about the system that most TH-camrs. Nice work *thumbs up*
