  • When a local tells you not go that way, you should probably listen.. apparently I'm not so good at listening. It's day 3 of my trek through the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.. a day that would have me in a panic. Luckily some help from an unlikely source would save my day.

I hope you had a good time in Morocco one thing is we don't speak Arabic we speak Amazigh in the Atlas mountains we are Imazighen "Berbers" the Indigenous people of Morocco and North Africa we are not Arabs and the guy that was telling you is dangerous was meaning that the danger is in the trail it\s self and was trying to provide you with the safer road according to him as a non-Mtb guy but due to the language barrier things went south sad except that is brake my heart seeing them still living in tents after the earthquake

That was fantastic to watch. It's really interesting seeing what you went through with your mind, making thoughts and decisions after not knowing what you were up against. I actually believe many would go through the same thought process if they found themselves in the same position. I was thinking some of the same things you were before you even spoke your thoughts.

I had a similar freak-out once. I recall bike-packing in Wales during COVID in a remote valley I came across a gold prospecter when went down to the stream to get some water. I knew it was illegal. He said watch yourself or you may break your bones which freaked me out! He was working hard, lots of equipment, looked very professional. He said he was the only person to have official permission from the Queen and spoke confidently! I accidentally told him where I was wild camping. Later I freaked-out out all night wondering if he would come and get me. But after I realised he was actually pretty friendly and the bones bit was really in case I slipped on way to get water. I reckon a part of it was I had a massive day in 30C heat up big hills. And many big days before that! I think that affects the mind at times! Still a great adventure, loved it!

Amazing video Eric, what an adventure that had to be up in the those mountains. I don't think you were an idiot at all, I think you were having a very normal and rational reaction that almost anybody not from that country (or area) would have had in that situation. It was people probably just trying to help but with language barriers etc it was perfectly natural to be cautious, it helps keeps one alive, I wouldn't blame anyone for being a bit concerned in that situation.
You beat yourself up in your videos a bit and we love the honesty and vulnerability you display, it makes for great story telling. I do honestly hope you are praising yourself internally on occasion too, You have some great qualities about you and you deserve to hear it, especially from yourself from time to time.
Keep doing what you're doing for as long as you can my friend, stay safe and keep sharing those adventures.

Amazing video! Thanks so much for sharing! As for the guy who said it was dangerous, I’m sure he was referring to the terrain and not the people. He also doesn’t know your bike skills or what you’re capable of. It wouldn’t surprise me if there have been westerners who have gotten lost or hurt out there. My take is he was trying to keep you safe. But the language barrier resulted in confusion about what he meant and created lots of uncertainty in your mind that you were making a bad decision. Just my two cents. Best wishes in all your future adventures!
