Please do not be harsh on those states, Hindi heart land was very well developed in the history. Well Pataliputra was very much developed to it's time. Due to foreign attacks and colonization entire India fell. Hindi belt developed nationality and revolted heavily in 1857, the revolt was brutally crushed and British never develop that part for 100 years. British developed south and western India relatively well. At the time of Independence UP was having just 10% literacy (now 70%), Kerala was having 40% literacy (now almost 100%). UP, Bihar fell into ditch (due to their own choice as you said) by electing mafia dons as Netas.

Unfortunately it's reality where added couple of pointers too. Now, for those who might start off with colonisation part, well, Most of India was colonized for Less than 100 Years while some parts of India more than 100 years. Indonesia and Philippines were Colonized Longest in Asia for about 400 to 500 Years by European Powers. Indian Kingdoms Colonised Parts of Sri Lanka, Central Asia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines etc via Butuan, Cebu, Manila, Tondo, etc. Many of the Tagalog and Bisaya words including the word Rajah comes from Tamil and Sanskrit, 2 of India's Oldest Languages (though Tagalog and Bisaya have fusion with other languages too). Buddhism spread there which exists a lot in Southeast Asia due to Trade, Colonisation of Places and migration too. Indian kingdoms took a lot of wealth in those nations as well as changed their lifestyles too but Southeast Asia has been slowly picking up after about 400 to 500 years of European Colonisation, let alone colonisation from Indian powers that began during the 2nd half of the 1st Millennium.
Indians knocked themselves out in last 77 years too especially stealing from each other and knocking themselves out which is the same in many of the Asian countries including Philippines. Philippines was expected to do well 60 to 70 years ago where at that time, it had much better Per Capita Incomes and Education System compared to most Asian Countries but fell apart where Philippines became a lower-middle-income country in 1976 while India became that in 2007. Both are expected to be upper-middle-income countries in 2030s or after where both face lots of challenges including Inequality.
21st Century also doesn't need a lot of labour. Automation started thousands of years ago where 1 of those technologies is the water wheel technology used in metallurgy, irrigation for agriculture and so on which even India had about 2000 years ago. Mass automation started couple of decades ago where 4th Industrial Revolution has about 100 Disruptive Technologies where there's a Periodic Table for Disruptive Technologies that came out about 5 to 6 years ago. AI is only 1 out of those 100 Disruptive Automated Technologies where Labour is needed less.
21st Century needs more entrepreneurship of integrated education of humanities, arts, social sciences, natural and formal sciences along with research knowledge of these integrated areas as well as skills in these integrated areas which is STREAM skills where 1 needs to be good with other activities too with education also that helps with integrated areas like photography or sports or debates and much more which helps with analytical side, critical and logical thinking side, technical side, strategic management side, creative and innovative sides and so much more.
India, sorry to say, has 1 of the Highest Inequality in the World. Amongst Developed Nations, USA has the Highest Inequality (amongst developed nations) due to Following Capitalism a lot while the World's Highest Median Wealth with Lower Inequality goes to Nations like Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, Switzerland and many within Europe as They Focused on Capitalism Mixed with Welfare of Their Countries with Lower Inequality. Norway is a Commodity Based Economy though it is ranked within the World's Top 20 to 25 under Global Innovation Index Rankings but its Sovereign Fund is 1 of the World's Largest which Helps the People of Norway when Norway sells of its Commodities. That is why countries like Nordic Nations, Switzerland, Belgium, Australia, New Zealand, etc have Less Inequality, amongst World's Best for Median Wealth compared to even the US of A as they Mixed Capitalism with Welfare of People.
Long way for Many Asian Nations to go like Most of South Asia where South Asia is the Worst Region within Asia, some parts of Southeast Asia including Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos as well as couple of other Asian countries including Yemen, North Korea and so on (Singapore is already a developed country with 1 of the world's highest per capita incomes along with Qatar and so on. Brunei is a high-income nation that isn't yet fully developed. Malaysia like China is on the border-line of being High-Income Countries which are Fully Developed. Thailand still has Higher Per Capita Incomes than Both Philippines and India even though Thailand is slowing down. Indonesia and Vietnam have Higher Per Capita Incomes than India. Even Philippines has Higher Per Capita Income than India though India could catch up to Philippine Per Capita Income within the next 15 years as India has Better Economy, Better Education System, Better Innovation Rankings under Global Innnovation Index Rankings compared to Philippines). The fact that if you earn 25,000 rps per month will land you somewhere in the top 5 percent or even less than that says a lot about the grim reality of our country. GDP is useless if 95 to 99 percent of the population is living god knows how. And please don't even compare ourselves to europe. Sure you will find people living in poverty there as well but the difference in the numbers here ( India) and abroad is undeniable. One improves if you remove the spectacle of ignorance. Let the nature of chaos and inequality rule the world. It's what is driving the growth in India. It's simply to better to ignore it. However, that being said Govt. much do everything within it's power to provide equal opportunity to everyone.

The only continent that practice a large degree of equality is Europe. It has taken us more then 100 years of determinate work to service everyone the same opportunity for a plethora of education (free) Health service (almost free) and proper care for the unemployed (with large variations)
Why couldent India ? We showed it worked. We dident abolish inequality, but we made it possible for everyone to have a go regardless of your background and class. Yes. Its that simple.
A nation with a strong class conscious division basically is a nation with unexplored talents.

What does equality mean? Is there equality all over Europe? India is also like that. When you look at a huge country in terms of population, you will find that it is full of diversity. Every state here has its own culture, but most of the population of India lives in villages and the old people do not change their environment and culture, but the coming generations will keep going with the changing times and some rich people take citizenship of countries like America, Europe and strengthen their economy.

Of course the is inequality all over the world, but, as this video describes, inequality in India is the highest in the world. i.e. The financial gap between the richest person and poorest person in India is the largest, compared to any other nation. You could extrapolate that to the gap between the top 1% and bottom 10%, or top 10% and bottom 80%.

I confess... Its a bit too much Euro-centric this report. It doesent make sense trying to grasp such a colossal complex topic in 8 minutes presenting income distribution and disparities in education only. Its a habit Europeans have. We still consider ourselves as the champions for equality and prosperous outcome for everybody outside the EU 😳 Its a part of our DNA. And yes, there are a LOT of problems in the EU. Much have to do with ordinary people experiencing relative poverty with rising costs and stagnant wages. Poverty is on the rise in the EU year after year. Capitalism a´la´U.S. style is rampant in the EU. Creating generations trapped with low wages , not able to start a life on your own like we have been pampered with for so long. The EU is stagnant for the young people. They are the FIRST generation that are worse of then their parents at the same age. And that has not happend since at least 200 years (except for ww1 and ww2) Capitalism is to blame , and it will harvest and suck the EU dry. Like every endgame of poorly regulated capitalism . We have more stuff but our grand diversity in the EU is exploited and streamlined for sale

We citizens should make learned choices and decisions while choosing our representative leader and also pinpoint the weaknesses of the country to improve those areas like poverty, low gdp per capita, extreme inequality, low investment in research and development, low innovation, low scientific temper and more blind old religious customs and taboos

China has 1.4 billion people and 700 million working people. China's 600 million people have a disposable income of 1,000 yuan, including babies, students, the elderly and other non-working people. If the father in a Chinese family earns 6000 RMB. The mother, two children and an elderly man are all non-working. So the total number of people in the family is 6. The per capita disposable income is 1000 yuan.

Any Western documentary on most of the India's poor families will have more than one child usually around 3-6. Poverty in India is mainly because of over population. In the poor usually have more fertility rate. 90% of the poor people are responsible for their own poverty.

Dear DW, India is a country which has its history of 1000's of years. Not a 76 year old. We have inequality but we are capable enough to voice thus to the government and issues will be solved eventually as ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY. You better start reporting of your own country's inequality first.

Sad that DW find same people to tell you about India. Better you get economists who really are working on ground and those who sit is their AC rooms and preach to the world which is far behind the reality. You should get data about how many people in India had come out of poverty. The number of such people is bigger than the German Population. Think......

If India would have embraced market driver economy from 1950s, India might easily be second biggest economy in the world by now. Economic inequality would be still around but not to this magnitude. We wasted 4 decades in Nehruvian socialism combined with huge population growth, a deadly combination. Bottom 50% of the population has become irrelevant. They live on state subsidy. India is growing only for top 30%. This is the reality, no way to fix it.

When you look into kerala tamil nadu karnataka the inequality is less and people are more educated only because they controlled their population these poor states which doesn't met with the 2 child policy guidelines. They make lot of babies as a retirement plan and the kids suffer . Things need to change rather people need to change . You can make sufficient jobs when the population is exploding

Equality does not always mean a society is prosperous. Neither does inequality mean society is doing badly. In the 1970s, Indian society was more equal in terms of income than today but that doesn't mean Indian society was prosperous back in the day. A developing society will always have income inequality because of rapid growth driven by certain sections of the economy.

It will take time for India to fix this. For most years since the independence, India had corrupt governments who just filled their own pockets. As people will get access to education, they will improve their life. India already surpassed UK in top economic powers, Germany is next. This is just a transition. Have patience.
