Hahaha I remember exactly where I was when I first heard Tool. I was 7, on the way to my aunts house, and Schism came on the radio. I remember asking my older sister what instrument they were playing and that day I learned about bass guitar. I didn't listen to Tool for another 6 or so years then they became my favorite band. To this day 20 years later when I hear schism I can picture being on the road to my aunts house in the back of my mom's car
You should try Leprous. They are also progressive, and the drummer is amazing. Once you get used to the vocals they are fantastic. Nighttime Disguise is a good song
Listen to Tool with a good set of headphones. The engineering of the their songs is incredible. Once you fully appreciate their music (poly-rhythms, deep lyrics, engineering, etc) you will see how magical it is. Sammy Hagar said that these are the four best musicians at their craft (bass, drums, guitar, vocals) who all just happen to be in the same band.

Tool has been my favorite band for 22 years and honestly it’s my favorite thing to watch people experience them for the first time! Such a pleasure. Also, the song is about “the pot calling the kettle black”. It’s about their lawyers during the epic lawsuit they had against their record company.

"The Pot" is probably the perfect introductory choice for you because it showcases a little bit of everything that makes Tool the unique band they are. It also is one of Maynard's better vocal performances, but bear in mind that he is an extremely versatile singer and he can sound completely different from track to track. In many of their songs, his vocals are difficult to hear because he typically prefers his voice to be treated as just one of the instruments in the mix rather than front and center like with most bands. I would encourage you to continue on this Tool journey. They can be an acquired taste with their unique polyrhythmic style, but I can assure you that most of their songs will grow on you with each listen. I thank the universe everyday for Tool. I've been a fan since 1993. No other band comes close. I sang Parabol to my daughter Rosalie when she was born. Welcome to the family.
You definitely should listen to Tool through a good set of headphones. There are so many intricacies you miss in the mixing they do. Looking forward to future Tool reactions from you. Also Maynard is the lead singer for the bands Puscifer and A Perfect Circle. He has different sounds/styles for each of his bands.
Danny Carey is the drummer for tool and he's an absolute monster. Everyone has their own favorite drummers and there's always debates on drummer reddits etc.. but whenever Danny's name comes into the conversation EVERYONE is like "yeah that dudes different."
Tool is genius on an etheric level. Their music is a kind of transcendental experience that only Tool can evoke. It's an awesome thing to see someone appreciate their undeniable talent in such a way as they deserve. 🕉
Tool has a very hypnotic rhythm. They have different beat signatures with many of their instruments that all work together to give it a very tribal feel. Manard Keenan is the vocalist.
You gotta check out the drum cam video. The absolute most elite performance I've ever seen. It literally puts the dedication TOOL has for the craft of music into perspective. King of drumming
Tool beats and rhythms often have multiple things going on at once. Looking at the audience at Tool shows, you can often see 2, 3, 4 head banging patterns at the same time, depending on which bit instrument (or limb, in the drummer's case) the individual is grooving to. Just bop what you feel, man.
Tool is my favorite band bro, can’t go wrong with what you pick, I was stoked to see this. They are famous for playing odd and different times together. The lead Maynard, is also singer in two other groups, puscifer and A perfect circle. Check them out, they’re both different.
Tool is in its own category. The music and rhythm is extremely complicated...as a classically trained pianist I can't even find a beat to bob my head to! Better idea: smoke some *@%$, turn off the lights and just listen 😀.
@@pastorofmuppets22 for a pianist to transpose this song you have to understand that means playing justin Adam maynard and if that aint bad enough Danny. Teaching one part individually maybe be easy but playing all 4 at the same time... Not easy on the piano dude.
So true 🙏 Im a drummer myself so I got it quickly because they rely heavily on the rhythmic part of their music, so I get how hard it would be for a pianist to find the rhythm as easily 😅 tool is fucking amazing 👌🏼
@@timfarrow1545 80 percent of their work is in Phyrgian modality. The percussion varies a bit with time signatures. The string section doesn't deviate much
Danny Carey is one of my favorite drummers, even over Brad Wilk. His use of polyrhythms are insane, especially with his feet! OMG! He loves using odd time signatures and his technique is just unique! If you love Brad, you’ll love Danny Carey. I suggest you check out 46&2! One of my favorites! Drums are just sick on this track! Love your reactions on rock, keep up the great work! ✊🏽💪🏽👏🏽
The beauty of Tool... it's not just the time but the changing times. Sometimes you're right on the beat but then it shifts and it keeps your ear listening.
Welcome to Tool! This is definitely the best introductory song to start listening to this band. I totally understand that you need to learn in a way how to get a feel for much more complex music than the stuff produced for the masses, but feeding your brain with increasing compositional technical complexity switches on a lightbulb inside you and you gain a new ear and appreciation for music you never knew existed. It's like venturing out and visiting art museums for the first time when you've only really been exposed to art in school classrooms. A whole new world of awe-inspiring creative masterpieces throughout history awaits you. Enjoy the ride, and spiral out! You'll come to understand that reference sooner or later 😁 Can't wait to watch your Tool journey.
Tool always has crazy time signatures, it's part what makes them unique and interesting and fucking awesome. Danny Carey is my favorite drummer (and one of the best ever imo)
@@eccehomer8182 It is in 4/4, but the main vocal motif is a polyrhythm and the other instruments are doing this stuttering syncopation that fits great but sounds like it shouldn't and the fact it does is some weird magic.
@@jbirkins Yeah... saying "plain old 4/4" is a bit simplistic. The fact it's 4/4 under all the complexity speaks to their musical genius. There are many other bands that use complex timings, but rarely do they hit the mark in terms of complexity and great song writing quite like Tool. Rush are another, but despite all the great musicians we have I'm struggling to think of another in the same top bracket. Maybe Led Zepp? But even they are a bit "porn" in comparison.
When you listen to tool it's important that you have either good headphones or awesome sound system that allows you to distinguish the different sounds as they can tend to blend together on basic ass speakers because the instruments are extremely extravagant. As a drummer myself, Danny Carey of Tool is my favorite drummer, and Maynard James Keenan is an awesome vocalist and writer.
Maynard is the greatest and most talented vocalist on the planet. He’s the vocalist of 3 super successful, globally recognized bands, Tool, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. Tool considered within the top 100 bands of all time. He has MANY different styles, sometimes harder and more aggressive, and other times angelic and absolutely beautiful. Congratulations on taking the first step into discovering the music of Maynard James Keenan.
When you have been listening to rock and metal for a long time, the rhythms they use in the songs become repetitive or you can already anticipate what the rhythm will be like. And that's the exact moment where you listen to TOOL
Maynard James Keenan is their singer, one of the best rock vocalists of all time.. Danny Carey, their drummer, is known as the Octopus, because he is NOT FUCKIN HUMAN. Check out the drum cam video of Pneuma to see what I mean.. Maynard's got 2 other groups that you should check out, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, if you want more of those silky vocals
I'll be real with you, Tool has some songs that can put new listeners off. Harsh guitars and a bunch of weird shit that's best left until you're sure you like the band. This was a good one to ease yourself in. Aenima, Vicarious, Sober, Right In Two, Schism, and Stinkfist are other good ones to start with. I'd avoid their music videos too, you have to do like dmt or acid or some shit or else they're just distracting and weird.
That's exactly how I feel after listening to a Tool song for the first time. Only after listening to it 3 or 4 times over the course of a week or so can I really grasp the complex rhythms. And from then on listening to the song creates an overwhelming and almost unparalleled joy inside of me.
So happy you enjoyed this track. You picked a great first listen. It gets better and better! Musicality, vocals, percussion, rhythm changes and that Voice! Only one singer. Looking forward to your TOOL discovery!
Tool is unlike any other band ever. There's no doubting that. Some people love it, some hate it and either is fine. I like seeing people hear them for the first time
Dope reaction man. Love this damn song. TOOL - AEnima is a great song also. Would be awesome to see you react to that one Thanks for the content man, really dope seeing you branch out a lil bit. Keep up the good work
So there is always multiple rhythms in tool songs. You can have three people bobbing their heads to tool all differently and all be right lol. That’s what makes it timeless. Every time I blast this in the car it’s like a new song. Tool is a bangerrrrr
I love this. I wish I remembered the first time I listened to Tool. It’s been at least 21 years! I relate more and more to the lyrics as I grow older & become more spiritual. Tool speaks to the soul.
One thing I feel I need to add to this comment section is this; this is a band you MUST see LIVE before they decide to stop touring!! I have personally been healed from this music. I have seen an entire colliseum healed by the magic of TOOL. I was sober, and high from the show hours afterwards and others, I encountered afterwards were experiencing the same true TooL phenomenon. I sat down Indian style during the show, then two people next to me did the same, and so on and so forth, until half of the standing audience was sitting Indian style. I'd say first 3 to 6 rows of people all sitting Indian style in typical yoga position, some meditating, some not, some just feeling and watching and it was truly one of the most profound moments of my existence. All members are crazy talented and just make up one of the best musical bands of our time. Please, believe in the immaculate power that is TooL.
One of my personal favorite things is seeing people react to hearing Tool for the first time. They truly are one of the most unique bands out there and there’s so much sound in their music. Once you listen to more of them, it becomes much easier to start picking up on their particular rhythms from song to song.
There are so many great Tool songs, and some really weird stuff. I recommend H., Forty Six and Two, The Grudge, Schism, Stinkfist, and Lateralus as a start.
The phrase of the "pot calling the kettle black " is what the song is referring to. Its basically talking about how fucked up the government is in our society today. And about how the judges and jurors should take a look at themselves before making a decision on another person's life! Love your content brother
So excited to see someone else discovering Tool. Also, it’s not just you, Tool’s timing and use of rhythm is unique and quite different from most rock. You should dive into Lateralus or The Grudge next. And I’ve seen it elsewhere in the comments, but you’ll be doing yourself a service if you wear headphones while listening.
Tool is the kind of music that you love more you listen to it. If you want to hear some of their truly impactful music… the patient… parabol/parabola… you won’t regret delving into their catalog…
You're not wrong, but look deeper than that. If care Bears and hugs got ratings, that's what would be on tv. Media is just a reflection of our selves. WE "crave the violence."
Maaaan… I’m having so much fun watching you discover Tool. You definitely made my day. You’re just scratching the surface. I hope you continue on the journey 🤘
The band lays down tracks and gives them to Maynard to put his lyrics to, it's a unique creative method and is why sometimes Maynard voice and choice of lyrics seems to wrap around the music in strange ways
I've been down a rabbit hole of 'reaction' videos today, this has been the highlight for sure. Really respect the way you actively listen to a song, subscribed.
I would love to make a list of TOOL songs for you to hear. Been a massive fan since 92 but... Pneuma live Danny Carey drum cam. I promise he's the best drummer you've ever seen play.
Worth a subscription, real as hell. Like a lot of people say to new listeners some Tool songs can be off putting, Vicarious is a great one to check out if you're newer to Tool. Always try to check a lyrics video whenever possible as their official videos are pretty distracting. But as always just do you and keep it going!
I appreciate your honesty man. Very cool for me to hear someone who genuinely heard this song for the first time and was saying the same thing I thought the first time I heard it..."what did I just listen to?" They have so many dang levels man. I'm glad you got to experience them with us all. You gained a new subscriber in me :)

He can’t “catch the rhythm” only because Danny Carey uses many different time signatures. It’s not the basic 4/4 that is used in dance, rap, hip hop, country etc. Check out Right in Two. It’s probably their most relevant song in today’s climate.
I love love these first reactions thank you I enjoyed going on the tool journey with you. It is a journey everytime. Badass band. I feed off of the reactions remembering my first reaction in the 90s lol

FYI for those who don't know. This singer has two other bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. You're welcome.
Danny Carey is the drummer for tool and he's an absolute monster. Everyone has their own favorite drummers and there's always debates on drummer reddits etc.. but whenever Danny's name comes into the conversation EVERYONE is like "yeah that dudes different."
When the Mount Rushmore of drummers is built, Danny will have a spot there…

Carey is the all around best drummer alive today...all due respect to the many other great talents..but c'mon
True Dat!
Tool is genius on an etheric level. Their music is a kind of transcendental experience that only Tool can evoke. It's an awesome thing to see someone appreciate their undeniable talent in such a way as they deserve. 🕉
The best part is that Kohls commercial comes on at the end and says “wanna hear something amazing?” Hahah
" I'm bout to become one of those " Hahahahahahahaa Love it man and great reaction !!!
Finaly!!! I dont know how quick to check this reaction out! Best drummer ever!!
My favorite thing is watching peoples facial expressions. It's this look of bewilderment that they can't quite believe what they're hearing. 10/10
Super refreshing to see someone being genuine with their reaction instead of how people usually play it.
Check them out, they’re both different.
and amazing in their own way.. info is there if you have the ears to hear...be warned or rewarded .. perception . choice. long live MJK
"..I would like to know who's singin'"
Let me introduce...Maynard
😎
The randomness of Tool is their thing. Your reaction was awesome. Subbed.
Tool is in its own category. The music and rhythm is extremely complicated...as a classically trained pianist I can't even find a beat to bob my head to! Better idea: smoke some *@%$, turn off the lights and just listen 😀.
No,it isn't complicated. At all in fact.I teach kids guitar.I get them playing this in a few weeks
The string section doesn't deviate much
25 years a fan. Listen with your heart and your mind. Hearing this live was a moving experience
RIP Danny Carey BTW!! and yes the poly's is what thru him off but more he listens he will find the groove
@@endlessdecay2930 Whaddaya mean RIP Danny Carey? The man is still alive.
@@endlessdecay2930 Woah! What do you mean “RIP”? He’s not dead!
@@robertflores8234 dont mind me im dumb wrong drummer had a few sorry yall :(((
@@endlessdecay2930 It’s all good. lol I scrambled to the internet real quick.
You'll come to understand that reference sooner or later 😁
Can't wait to watch your Tool journey.
Good for you for broadening your musical experience. I hope you continue to explore more by Tool. They will seriously blow your mind.
Man I’m so happy you’re reacting to Tool right now. One of the greatest bands to ever do it.
Edit: Their music videos are off the fucking chain.
Tool Fans get to relive their first experiences through you guys. It's great!
Tool always has crazy time signatures, it's part what makes them unique and interesting and fucking awesome. Danny Carey is my favorite drummer (and one of the best ever imo)
The really crazy thing is The Pot is in plain old 4/4... the fact that this is hard to pick up is insane!
That moment when you realized, “Oh that wasn’t the end?” Priceless.
When homie said "Dare I say milkie ass vocals." I spat out my water bruh.
What a magical experience to watch someone slowly click and lock in with the whole Tool vibe.
When you have been listening to rock and metal for a long time, the rhythms they use in the songs become repetitive or you can already anticipate what the rhythm will be like. And that's the exact moment where you listen to TOOL
After listening to them you realize that it is a wonderful and unique band that there is no other like it
They are brilliant in many, many ways! Along a few others one of the most unique bands in these past years... even one of the most unique ever tbh!
Dude mmmmmm check that drum cam video out. Treat yourself. Just admire, don't try to analyze it because it's too much lol
My buddy introduced me to Perfect Circle about 2 days ago. Didn’t disappoint.
Welcome to tool. We embrace you fully
You forgot Invincible
Definitely avoid the videos…
I agree. Don't watch the official videos!! Lol
Lateralus also!
@@stagger9660 Lateralus is not the best song to start. It's too complex.
I really enjoyed this video, Tool is an incredible group. Maynard is an incredible singer. I'm really glad you enjoyed this!
You can just see you absorbing the energy from all the classic bands I grew up listening to. Your RAGE reactions are the best! Keep absorbing!
Tool is about the only band that had lead drums, and backup guitar.
Danay Carey is the Octopus - try watching the drum cam for the song "Pneuma"
That's exactly how I feel after listening to a Tool song for the first time. Only after listening to it 3 or 4 times over the course of a week or so can I really grasp the complex rhythms.
And from then on listening to the song creates an overwhelming and almost unparalleled joy inside of me.
So happy you enjoyed this track. You picked a great first listen. It gets better and better! Musicality, vocals, percussion, rhythm changes and that Voice! Only one singer. Looking forward to your TOOL discovery!
if you liked Maynard's voice on this song, HIGHLY recommend listening to Sober (live at Reading festival). its such an amazing performance.
I concur.
yes
I feel like the onsie, hairstyle, and dance moves throw some people off lol!
Tool is unlike any other band ever. There's no doubting that. Some people love it, some hate it and either is fine. I like seeing people hear them for the first time
Dope reaction man. Love this damn song. TOOL - AEnima is a great song also. Would be awesome to see you react to that one
Thanks for the content man, really dope seeing you branch out a lil bit.
So true.
The singer Maynard is on a Rage Against the Machine song "Know Your Enemy". Go back and listen to that song now. I bet you can pick him out easily.
One of my personal favorite things is seeing people react to hearing Tool for the first time. They truly are one of the most unique bands out there and there’s so much sound in their music.
Once you listen to more of them, it becomes much easier to start picking up on their particular rhythms from song to song.
You have just experienced the greatest band ever. It only gets better from here. They do not have a bad song.
I love the way you listen, pause, process, then comment. That's very complimentary to the artists you're listening to.
There are so many great Tool songs, and some really weird stuff. I recommend H., Forty Six and Two, The Grudge, Schism, Stinkfist, and Lateralus as a start.
Also Parabol/Parabola
Eulogy is a great one too
First time on this channel, I love the visuals--reminds me of A Scanner Darkly.
The phrase of the "pot calling the kettle black " is what the song is referring to. Its basically talking about how fucked up the government is in our society today. And about how the judges and jurors should take a look at themselves before making a decision on another person's life! Love your content brother
Maynard writes and sings you to another planet
TOOL songs get better the more you listen to them. There's so much going on, you catch something new every time you listen to it.
And the more you listen to it and you still continue to find new sparks of genius everywhere. What a majestic song 🌀
Bon voyage 🚀
So excited to see someone else discovering Tool. Also, it’s not just you, Tool’s timing and use of rhythm is unique and quite different from most rock. You should dive into Lateralus or The Grudge next.
And I’ve seen it elsewhere in the comments, but you’ll be doing yourself a service if you wear headphones while listening.
Tool is the kind of music that you love more you listen to it. If you want to hear some of their truly impactful music… the patient… parabol/parabola… you won’t regret delving into their catalog…
I told you, bro! A good lyrical song by Tool is Vicarious. It's about TV desensitizes you and makes you crave violence.
You're not wrong, but look deeper than that. If care Bears and hugs got ratings, that's what would be on tv. Media is just a reflection of our selves. WE "crave the violence."
LOVE your reaction to the mindless ad at the end of the song!! The look on your face was GOLD!!
Definitely check out pneuma drum cam live video. Danny Carey won a Grammy for this drum performance. It'll blow your mind bro!!
I second this. You’ll get dizzy.
Since 92 you say? Nipple rings, new tattoos? :)
@@AdrianvanNunen probably a dope Beasty tee as well
Worth a subscription, real as hell. Like a lot of people say to new listeners some Tool songs can be off putting, Vicarious is a great one to check out if you're newer to Tool. Always try to check a lyrics video whenever possible as their official videos are pretty distracting. But as always just do you and keep it going!
Danny Carey "Pnuema" live will give you a good idea of how great these musicians are!
Youre spot on, they use different time signatures and experiment with polyrhythms. The more you listen, the more you'll catch it.
Subscribed cause of this! 👊🏻
Ive been listening to tool since i was 13. (just turned 42) and seeing other people have their first Toolgasm is an awesome experience. I Can’t wait to go check out your other vids!
much love from ontario canada 🇨🇦
He can’t “catch the rhythm” only because Danny Carey uses many different time signatures. It’s not the basic 4/4 that is used in dance, rap, hip hop, country etc.
Check out Right in Two. It’s probably their most relevant song in today’s climate.
Vicarious as well
i was about to suggest this one
This song is mostly in 4/4 just with odd accents
I love love these first reactions thank you I enjoyed going on the tool journey with you. It is a journey everytime. Badass band. I feed off of the reactions remembering my first reaction in the 90s lol
