Welcome to Tool. As many people already stated, you started in "advanced Tool". There's no right or wrong way to approach things from here. If you're up for it, start at the Opiate EP, then Undertow, Ænema, Lateralus, 10,000 Days, then Fear Innoculum. The whole album in one sitting. Many of the songs are intended to run together. The further you get into their discography, the longer the songs get, lol. Get ready for 15 minute songs. Oh, and their drummer is an absolute all time great. Danny Carey. Watch his drum cam video of "Pneuma" after you listen to the studio version.
Don't start with Opiate in my opinion. 10,000 Days has most of the tracks that hit on youtube. Although I would like to hear the reaction to Opiate, given the religious undertones I'm getting from these two.
Right into the deep end of the Tool pool! 😊 You guys should do a lot more Tool - they are the perfect mix of outstanding musical talent and some deep thoughts. 46 and 2, Right in Two, the Grudge, and Descending are some of my faves. I was definitely one of those annoying “TOOL shed” fans nudging you two to this point. I’ve been unreasonably excited for this match, and now I feel totally vindicated because you both get it. Tool fans are a weird bunch, but one thing we agree on is that first-time reactions like these itch a scratch. It’s such a vicarious pleasure to see people fall down this rabbit hole. (Vicarious is a must-listen, btw) I second another commenter on the next Tool recommendation: 46 & Two is a hypnotic mindf^ck and falls right in line with your insights here. It’s the ratio of all human features like limb length and facial proportions. Lots of math, biology, philosophy, and spirituality references throughout not just this song - but their entire discography. I can’t wait to watch the journey. Enjoy, gentlemen. 🌀
"With my feet upon the ground...." sequence is talking about vibration. 🌀 Excellent reaction, boys. Thanks so much and just do more Tool! Pneuma album version would be a great next step before going back catalogue. Spiral out 🌀🙂

You guys out the gate had the best understanding of this song I've ever known anyone to have on their first go. the lyrics help but bravo really!! enjoyed this
Oh man first it was the Sleep Token rabbit hole now its an even deeper rabbit hole with Tool. On to true polyrhythms and deep impactful lyrics. ALWAYS HAVE THE LYRICS PULLED UP FOR TOOL Tool always has Maynard's voice at the same level as the other instruments because he believes his voice is not more important than anyone else's ''voice''. Just like with Sleep Token everything Tool does comes from the Carl Jung and Jungian philosophy. Spiral out boys because Tool is gonna melt your brains.
I haven't gotten into the deeper meaning in the lyrics but the math behind the song is pretty cool. The syllables of the opening lyrics of the song follow the structure of the first six numbers of the Fibonacci Sequence. If you don't know what that is, it's a sequence of numbers where the next number is found by adding up the two previous numbers. It goes 1 1 2 3 5 8 13 21, and so on. So with the lyrics, "Black, and, white are, all I see, in my infancy, red and yellow then came to me" 1 1 2 3 5 8. There's also a point where the time signature switches from 9/8 to 8/8 and then 7/8 (I forget exactly where in the song) and the 16th number in the Fibonacci Sequence is 987. There's other math involved that I've forgotten over the years, but graphically, the Fibonacci Sequence forms a spiral, which is a major part of this song. I know there's probably more to it, hopefully other people in the comments can shed light on everything awesome behind this great song. Glad you guys enjoyed!
@@aarinmiles990 Yeah. The spiral is the basic building-block of God. It's everywhere in nature. This song is going from infancy (the heart beat sounds remind me of an ultra-sound) through spiritual awakening and embracing this divine spiral ride, with all its ups and downs.

Love this reaction! Subscribed. And I haven’t listened to any of your Sleep Token reactions yet! Hope you guys go deep on Tool. The Grudge, 46 and 2, Descending, Invincible and Pneuma.. just to get started. 😂
i love the fact that Tool uses THIS SONG, the song with all the fibinacci sequencing in the lyrical composition and time signatures, etc. to push the message of 'less analyzing, more going with the flow.' It's equal parts funny, insightful and trollish.
Starting at the deep end, huh? LOL! Great reaction, though. Most Tool newbies start with The Pot so maybe you should visit that one next time. It's a bit more conventional in terms of song structure, but still has a bit of everything else that makes Tool such a special band. I'm sure you'll love it!
In an interview with Aggro Active (May 2001), Maynard offered this answer: "Lateralus itself is actually a muscle and although the title does have something to do with the muscle, it's more about lateral thinking and how the only way to really evolve as an artist -- or as a human, I think -- is to start trying to think outside of the lines and push your boundaries. Kind of take yourself where you haven't been and put yourself in different shoes; all of those cliches." It is almost Latin for "to the side." To what muscle specifically he is referring is not yet known, though there are apparently two leg muscles whose names include the word.
The Song ignited my Toolexperience 18 years ago. They’ve only gotten better since, so have fun with lots of beautiful Art to discover in Music and Lyrics!
Tool's music isn't written to be dissected one line at a time, each composition is it's own experience. There's a lot to unpack in their music so just chill and listen to it, the lyrics and what it means to you will come out in due time! 👍
I suggest Right In Two. It has big messages that people are trying to dissect and apply to what’s happening in the world today. And the musicianship is phenomenal.
We just two stanzas in and I can already TELL I am going to love this channel. Goes without saying, I liked, subbed and rang the bell! Hell yeah! Let's continue.
I find it interesting the way people are first introduced to Tool. As a drummer, my reaction when I first heard them in 1992 was instant HOLY SHIT (Listen to Undertow album). I heard the complexities of Rush's rhythms, with the aggressiveness of the angst/Grunge guitar of the 90s. Adam Jones (guitar) is amazing, Justin was an upgrade on bass, Danny is the MAN on drums, and Maynard is an alien from outer space. His vocals are spot on yet I concentrated more so on the instruments when I first heard them. Now, 30+ years later, I am now enjoying his lyrics more so. Peace.
Tool Army checking in, spiral out boys 🌀🤘 16:15 I've always thought that lyric is reffering to taking a deep breath. Suck in some air, and of course air is moving all accross your skin 👍
When I listen to this song on a good stereo or through quality headphones, I always experience frisson from the way the instruments swell as he sings that line.
So many songs from them that will take you on a journey but I'd recommend going to Pneuma with Danny Carey live. You'll see just how insanely gifted he is as a drummer. Spiral out!
I feel like this really speaks to a shared intersectional experience people have who have been *othered* by society, or by their families, and just anyone else who from a young age had to perform behavior to keep anyone and everyone around them comfortable by means of minimizing themselves. They never get that chance to build a sense of self that could pick it’s own path forward with self knowledge of who you are, because you’ve had to focus at all times on what other people wanted or expected or needed you to be, living life from the outside in and never fully dropping out of that haze until one day you realize you’ve been on autopilot trying to meet some imagined outline of a normative life
Tiny Toolhead here... As infants we can only see so much then as we grow, we are taught certain things and learn certain ways in our environments. But as we grow, we gain new and more tools to analyze life around us. But with this analysis, overanalyzing ends up resulting. The message conveyed here is: overanalyzing leads to a loss of control. When we lose control, we are not living in the moment. In loss of control we also lose the randomness in life which is (in my opinion) the genius BEAUTIFUL connection in this song: Fibonacci sequence within nature (Golden Ratio). The mathematical Fibonacci sequence: a sequence with each number is the sum of the two preceding ones. IE- 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,... Take the first number "1." 1+0 (or nothing) is 1. Therefore the second number is 1. Then 1+1=2 (2 being the 3rd number in the sequence). 2+1=3, etc. This sequence if drawn out makes a spiral. Hence "Spiral out." So the connection is suggesting to be like nature and follow this spiral. Not necessarily spiraling down, but "out." The genius of Tool in this song cannot be understated. Because the lyrics, if you follow the syllables, follows the Fibonnacci sequence!! Count it ;) Then there are so many other layers to the sequence in the song like the introductions starts at 01:12 seconds in which are the first 4 numbers in the sequence; vocals start at 97 (equaling 1.618 which is the Golden Ratio); and the time signature is 987...ANOTHER number with the sequence...!!!! Musically, lyrically, rockingly...this song goes hard!
Lol Tool fans here know very well that this song, (with many others) can be interpreted in many ways. "Swing on the spiral Of our divinity And still be a human" For me, I see this as humanity has embraced change and evolved separately. The more we step outside the normality, the more we discover for our future.
Subbing for Tool!! ❤ Enjoyed your Key & Peele references 😂😊 Addendum: You got it!! You understand the lyrics. Don't know your names yet but guy on left has the brain for Tool lyrics. Maynard is a genius. Important to know that the musicians write the music and hand it off to Maynard who writes his part around the lyrics, not to them. Enjoy this ride. SPIRAL OUT. KEEP GOING 🌀
Woah woah woah. Starting with Lateralus?! Let’s gooooooo. Ps: There’s a video that breaks this song down and its connections to the Fibonacci sequence. It’s fascinating. It’ll blow your minds. SPIRAL OUT! KEEP GOING!
In response to the first line: Infancy = Seeing things as they are (black & white). The moment we turned our heads in response to our given name is the moment "Red & Yellow" then came to be. Words & definitions give the illusion of separation. This caused Humanity to exchange true reality for a false one. The absolute, which is the original face of everything at any given "time", can't be defined by words. "There is no spoon"
Whoa, this was my suggestion from the poll that I thought was ignored. Thanks for doing this, gents! And yes, I'd hoped you guys would be interested in the "over-analyzing" message in contrast to the lyrical analysis you do. Not a dig in the least but, just something to ponder!

Hence "Spiral out." So the connection is suggesting to be like nature and follow this spiral. Not necessarily spiraling down, but "out."
The genius of Tool in this song cannot be understated.
"Swing on the spiral
Of our divinity
And still be a human"
For me, I see this as humanity has embraced change and evolved separately. The more we step outside the normality, the more we discover for our future.
It takes balls to begin your journey on the spiral with Lateralus itself. Welcome to the fray, fellas.
Subbing for Tool!! ❤ Enjoyed your Key & Peele references 😂😊
Addendum: You got it!!
Honestly, it's one of the better breakdowns of the lyrics. Love it boyssss
Your first experience with Tool and you dove in this deep! Damn! LET'S GO!
TOOL ARMY
Great reaction!! Next TOOL song has tobe 46&2
Woah woah woah. Starting with Lateralus?! Let’s gooooooo.
Ps: There’s a video that breaks this song down and its connections to the Fibonacci sequence. It’s fascinating. It’ll blow your minds.
SPIRAL OUT! KEEP GOING!
Welcome to the best song ever made!
Disposition, Reflection, Triad from this same album go together and are definitely about ego death.this was a great reaction. I hope to see some more.
Dude said QUANTUM BARS. That literally spun my head around. Facts.
You're in for an awakening and a wicked ride boys 🤘🏼👁🌀🌀🌀
All of it I need!!
Subbed for Tool, great reaction. Enjoy the journey. I wish I could go back and start over.
Quality family time here, thank you guys for sharing 🤘
This was a deeper one of theirs - they have a whole growth progression from earlier to later albums
