I love this line as well, but I always took it as him referencing reincarnation.

I know you’re getting a lot of SOAD suggestions, but I think Prison Song is the next one you should do. The lyrics aren’t obscure on that one, it’s very in your face and straightforward.

System has dozens of great songs! You really can’t go wrong. I’d recommend BYOB next. Their guitarist Daron also does amazing harmonies and also lead vocals on many of their songs too and has a very distinct voice that perfectly complements Serj’s voice. Check out their songs “vicinity of obscenity” and “IEAIAIO” for some really funny vocal deliveries that are fun tongue twisters!

As most of SOAD songs it has two meanings. The upfront meaning for the public and the deeper meaning for the initiated. This song is about grooming written years before it was a thing. Not just kids but on society as a whole and how Hollywood boils frogs.

That line you mensioned: "we drink from the river then we put up our walls" - I love this line because to me its saying that our society is a selfish one, in that man will find something that is resourceful to all (natural resources, fresh produce, livestock etc) and he will claim it as his own and put a price tag on it. So i'm hearing him say that the river should be for everyone to drink from at no cost but we've been brain washed by "money/fame =happiness"

Quickest summary of meaning that I can come up with because they are complex and deep thoughts and I don’t want to write a book on this for 10 people to read.
Basically we’re all looking up at these rich people with the big house, cars, possibly fame, etc. and we strive for these things thinking they’ll make us happy. But then when people get there they realize they haven’t found any happiness. That in our efforts to be individualistic we often lose sight that we are all part of something bigger.
