    Very happy this showed up in my recommended videos. Watched it last night and was playing just now and saw there was a Mime Jr. outbreak. Did everything in the video. First wave no shiny pokemon. Restarted the game went back to the outbreak. As I was approaching I saw the shiny stars animation pop out from the grass and then a split second later I saw the animation again. Since this was my first time seeing the shiny animation I just assumed the second animation was still part of the first. To my pleasant surprise when I approached the outbreak I saw two shiny Mime Jrs and caught them both!

    Finally! A video about this that not only breaks this method down in an easy to understand way, but also gives credit to the people who have put in the hours to figure out the RNG in this game. 👏🏻 Thank you for making this video and mentioning the RNG discord. I don't think enough people know how much work has gone into these findings.

    • @ZaItan1
      @ZaItan1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ThoseWhoStayUofM RNG is "random number generation," not randomness. Randomness is a supposedly "easy" or skill reducing element in games. The argument being that it presents outcomes even a skilled player can't perfectly control. But less control doesn't necessarily mean less skill-testing.
      Now, RNG is actually pseudo-randomness. An approximation of something we're not supposed to be able to predict. But in this case, like many others, the RNG is exploitable. Austin does light RNG manipulation to *ensure* with 100% certainty a shiny will show up in the first N advances, where 1/N is the supposed chance of a shiny (it's not really because we're actually pulling from the advances *without replacement*). I forget what N is for mass outbreaks. 150 or something.
      Yes it's non-trivial, but actually it IS rng.
      EDIT: you are sampling the pool of advances WITH replacement when doing weird things Austin mentions like battling multiple pokes.

    Just want to say I can confirm, if you get a shiny from an outbreak and then leave before finishing the outbreak, you save at camp and reset it. If the outbreak is there after you go to the village, you can farm the same shiny to fill a whole evolution chain. Or for example, farm an eevee outbreak to get enough Shiny eevee a all the eeveelutions shiny!

    I 100% vouch this video. Based on my experience so far playing this game with over 60 shinies. You should ALWAYS just catch. I watched the video about killing 5 and I’m actually upset with how many shinies I probably missed due to a long hunt…

    • @LilTheMyth
      @LilTheMyth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I went through 50 some resets just catching to get my shiny growlithe. The video about killing 5 was more of an example that it is possible to replicate shiny from battling and that battling is in a set order. You watched the video you saw monfernape respawn for him. That means is Austin technically wrong about how battling works in this video. But Austin is 100% correct on the fact just catching is faster and easier then battling and you should just catch for the fastest shinys because of how long battle animations last and if you fail the shiny it is harder to replicate.

    • @Hephaestus_God
      @Hephaestus_God 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I probably saw that same video from some other popular TH-camr.
      I even commented on that video to not listen to it and to just catch them (nobody listened to me of course). Not only is it slower to battle 5 of them than just jet ball all 15 that show up in an outbreak, but you are just not even checking the ones you skip. You are purposefully slowing down your chance for a shiny and lowering your odds. It is stupid. And with a shiny charm and 10 in the Pokedex you have a pretty high chance for a shiny to show up in an outbreak (way more than past games).
      Yet people just believe them because they are popular. Without proper testing, knowledge of basic statistics, and randomness it should have been obvious from the beginning that 5 kill method is flawed. Worse is the video I saw they got a shiny in 5 attempts. This could have been edited (we have no clue how many actual attempts it was), if it wasn't edited then that just means they got lucky. That doesn't prove a method works faster than another. It made me mad
      Getting shinies in this game is really easy and fun. Don't screw your life over with convoluted random chance methods.

    Man this video definitely helped explained what happened when I found a shiny voltorb. I was originally knocking out voltorb's through battles and ended up finding the shiny after a couple KO's. Unfortunately it decided to blow up but thankfully I had saved the game at camp. Unbeknownst to me, knowing I had just saved I wanted the shiny asap so I decided to catch all the voltorb's and not battle any of them. I was so shocked to not see the shiny show up that I decided to reset and go back to the original method of knocking the voltorb's out until the original shiny one appeared again. Great vid of help explaining what happened!🤠

    I was so confused yesterday when a shiny Barboach spawned in my outbreak. I quit the game and reloaded from camp because they killed me with mud before I could catch it, and I expected to just encounter it again, but it didn't show up.. This is likely why - I was sometimes battling the spawns, and sometimes catching. Thanks for clarifying this! :)

    • @atrius97
      @atrius97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If your behaviour is consistent, the spawns are consistent.
      Your only option for recovering a failed Outbreak shiny is: "Repeat your exact actions prior to the shiny spawning."
      If you just catch all of them in the overworld, that's an easy sequence to repeat. But if you did some combination of catching and battling and multi-battling, you better hope you had been recording so you can replay the footage and match it.

    • @saoirseguita
      @saoirseguita 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, knowing that behavior will affect spawns in this way is huge. I definitely would have tracked the event sequences had I known, and I will only be dealing with them one at a time from now on. Luckily, I found another shiny pretty quickly after proceeding per the video :)

And the 1v1 battles don't generate different spawns from catching or fleeing pokemon. It's only multi-battles. It's going to be interesting to see the experiments continue to see if you can be guaranteed a shiny in one outbreak encounter without going back to jubilife or not via progression by 1, 2, 3, or 4 spawns at a time because doing the same outbreak 4 times would still be faster than going back to Jubilife 14 times. Thank you for the video! Definitely seems like something fun to do in the post game.
    The way this method seems to work in my head is similar to the old days where you save before a legendary and then reset until it you see a shiny. My understanding is that when you exit to jubilife, you reset the spawn tables from square 1. Maybe that’s not how the code works, but essentially what we’re doing is that
    While typing this comment it clicked for me. As an example, let’s say a shiny bidoof is set for the 23rd seed/spawn.
    We go see 10 bidoof on the first run, reset back to Jubilfe. Then since we know 1-10 will not be shiny, the tables is now spawns 11-20, and when we see none of those are shiny, we go back to jubilife and now see 21-30, one of which being a shiny bidoof. The TH-camr he’s talking about is Blaine and I feel like he’s not really giving Blaine enough credit. In his video he explained everything on the dot except that one part where he said you could battle 5 and check those and reset . He should’ve said individually battle because if you individually battle it doesn’t change the next Pokémon that spawns. He just didn’t specify one thing but Austin doesn’t really seem to paint it that way.

    • @AustinJohnPlays
      @AustinJohnPlays  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      even if you did battle 5, 1v1 you're only seeing 9/15 of a possible outbreak pool. reducing your chance of finding it by 40%. And also what if the first advance with a shiny is advance #10, slot 10? you would miss it. then the next time it generates is advance #67. you could've just made your hunt 6x longer. But also what if that one is slot 12? see where I'm going with this?

    • @KirbyHenry10
      @KirbyHenry10 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AustinJohnPlays could you clarify? Do you end up seeing less Pokémon total in the outbreak by battling vs. catching?
      Also I see where you’re going with battling multiple Pokémon randomizes the spawn order in the seed to a degree, but since we don’t know when it will appear in the sequence, doesn’t it have equal potential to speed up your shiny encounter as it does to slow it down?
      I can see other reasons why catching would be more convenient vs. fighting, but I don’t understand the way you explain it as if you are guaranteed to get one shiny spawn in your outbreaks and multibattles can skip over your one chance and then you are SOL.
      From reading the comments I suspect it’s something like battling makes you encounter duplicate Pokémon sometimes but I am unclear

    pro tip: since single battling works to advance properly, starting a battle with a backshot will always result in a single battle! This can really help with aggressive pokemon, since getting ganged up on can make catching them all difficult.
    Edit: You can also get a backshot for a battle while the pokemon is aggroing you! If you can get good at dodging, you can guarantee a backshot!

    Your video explains entirely the weird stuff i've witnessed in my first outbreak hunts.
    I went there with little knowledge, thinking every spawn after the first 4 were determined on the spot, so i saved at a distance in the patch of grass and after an outbreak was cleared, i'd reload the game. Doing all these outbreaks in proper order with only catching 1 by 1, i should never have had a shiny after a reload since it's supposed to respawn the same pokemon.
    But i got some shinies that way: a gligar, a rufflet and a sneasel. Then i heard more about the back and forth to camps after each wave and i could verify it with a Yanma outbreak were the alpha always popped at the same part.
    What i actually did in these first outbreaks was messing up the order of spawning because of battles, and advancing a shiny who'd come in the next outbreak in the one i was doing

    Gotta say a huge thanks to Austin and the community for all the testing on this method. I was already a week and a half into a hunt on a monferno outbreak with no shiny luck. I was following the steps exactly except for battling to get rid of some pesky staravia and few monferno that would would get aggressive and approach me.
    I watched this video and it couldn't have been more than 10 reloads with no battling at all + catching every monferno. I approached the outbreak and there was a shiny monferno, finally! I caught two others for the hell of it and I jumped when a second shiny popped up. Caught that one too and kept catching the rest of the outbreak. I was floored when the last monferno appeared and it too was shiny.
    Really don't know what the chances are of that but I was super happy. It made all the time spent hunting worth it. And you can bet I'll be following this method again in the future plus whatever updates come up!

Granted it wasn’t originally the Pokémon I started the hunt for (Gabite) but the hunt reset to Zorua instead and so I got my shiny Zorua in 3 or 4 resets. Again thanks for the great explanation and thank you to everyone else who worked on this research!

    I want to add that it's possible to get 2 shinies in 1 mass outbreak, I managed to get 2 green mint bears in one spawn. As a personal. So now as Rule I clear out the spawn regardless of shiny.

    A good video idea would be how to deal with more aggressive outbreaks. Aggressive mons always overwhelm me when I try to do outbreaks of them, it'd be nice to see your tips and tricks on how to handle more aggressive outbreaks! Absolutely adore all these videos!

      Smoke bombs, sticky globs, stealth spray, and berries to distract them are all your friends. Use the tools the game gives you for stealth and crowd control.

    Thanks man. Your content is truly awesome. Like I just went to a Gyrados outbreak and found a shiny. My only other one is Combee, and it's not my favorite, so thank you for all your Arceus content.

    Tbh im just gonna come back here and comment every new shiny to A. Help you out with that TH-cam algorithm and B. Flex on my 2 shiny petilils from a single outbreak like 30 attempts in. I've gotten shiny Gengar, Eevee, petilil (x2), luxuray, and a Mr. Mime off this method. Big props Austin!!

    I’m at about 5 hours into hunting shiny growlithe and I want to die. It’s such a long walk. Me and Alpha Purugly are homies now. She watches me walk by like “oh lawd not again”.

    I finally caught my first mass outbreak shiny, after a third attempt, today. Thank you for this great explanation, it was very interesting! Before today, I had only found random shinies, but being able to boost chances with outbreak and target specific pokemons is a real game changer!

      @@pastelberru Yeah that's a long time, I'd be bitter too. You'll find him soon I think, this game is more fair when it comes to shiny encounters, if you put in the work you're usually rewarded. Before this one, I was never interested in shiny hunting because it was so difficult and you could spend so much time, days upon days, without finding anything. I still haven't found the one I really want though (shiny buneary) but I'm not giving up yet !

    The only part I'm confused about is, outbreaks don't last forever. I sometimes can only go back to town 2 times before they vanish.

    Austin John Plays, I did exactly what you said to do here with no shiny charm. I just caught shiny chimchar on my 12th advance!!! Thank you for your help to this community!
    I hunted gible for 86 improper advances, quit, looked at this video and boom. The only shiny I want more than Gible, chimchar.
