- Matchbox were formed in Middlesex, in 1971 by Iain "Houndog" Terry (born 1950), Fred Poke (born 1948), Jimmy Redhead (born 1954) and Wiffle Smith (born 1948). After 1978, the line-up consisted of Graham Fenton (lead vocalist), Steve Bloomfield (lead guitar, vocals), Gordon Scott (rhythm guitar), Fred Poke (bass guitar) and Jimmy Redhead (drums). Redhead had left in 1973, Smith in 1977 and Lupton in 1978 to tour with Chuck Berry. Dick Callan joined Matchbox on guitar, saxophone and violin until approximately 1985, writing many of the band's B-sides. The band appeared in the 1980 film Blue Suede Shoes which detailed the revival of 1950s rock 'n' roll music scene at the time.
The band's biggest hits include "Rockabilly Rebel" (Bloomfield, 1979), "Midnite Dynamos" (Bloomfield, 1980), a cover of The Crickets' "When You Ask About Love" (their only top five hit), and "Over the Rainbow" (adapted musical song, 1980). Their last single, "I Want Out" (Brian Hodgson/Ray Peters/Tony Colton, 1983) from their album, Crossed Line, was produced together with Kirsty MacColl.
The best known and highest rated songs in the Top 40 in the Netherlands in 1980 were "Midnite Dynamos", which reached 3rd place and "Buzz Buzz a Diddle It", which reached 6th place.
Striking with this song was the raw cry of the singer at the beginning of the song.
This performance was recorded by TROS Top 50 and broadcast on May 22, 1980.

Why i always want to live in 70s and 80s... i think those were the times to live...
Yep, they were!!👍🏻👍🏻
Been there and those were the best days
ROCKABILLY NEVER DIES !!! - - - Van deze muziek krijg ik gewoon een blije bakkes. 😀💗👍
This reminds me of several genres. Combined elements of blues, country, folk, and good old 60's rock & roll... all rolled into one song. That guy is a master of strings on that bass. That guy knows how to work that harmonica... and that's the 'Buzz'!! Happy Wednesday.... thank you for sharing! 💖
Awesome!!! I grew up listening to vinyl records of this band.
Great memories of these beautiful times of music. Best music years ever. I was born in 1962 and very happy that I was able to experience these years when it was noh beautiful music with content. 60s 70s and 80s best years.

VERY COOL
THAT SOUND....
Class! This was the first band I ever saw play live! This would have been around 1980 / 81 at the Cliff's Pavilion in Southend - Essex! They were ridding high along with Showaddywaddy (second band I ever saw live - at the same venue and the same year!) and Darts (saw them once later at a charity gig - with Susie Quatro!) in the UK charts. I would have been 14 or 15 and had a Matchbox patch alongside my Queen (third band I ever saw live - Milton Keynes Bowl 1982), Meatloaf, Status Quo and Spider patches on my Denim Jacket. Saw all those bands and more in the 80's and 90's.And to the previous commenter those really were the days!
I used to do the lighting for these guys and I remember playing Cliff Pavilion on Jan 5th 1980. I remember it because on the road to the next gig the roof of the truck came off. Fun times.
@@cotswoldlad9413 Wow - didn't remember the date! That far back!! If I remember correctly they were late starting and the support had to fill in a bit longer. Amazing gig though! Remember when life and Pop music was fun? I actually played on that stage myself! Was in a Dancing School (with YV guy Dominic Littlewood!) that did shows there and also played with various Brass Bands! Lot of memories of that venue. Saw Chuck Berry play there plus others. Lots of shows when I think about it.
Hey my fellow Southender. Great comments from all 3 of you 😊
