  • Lieutenant Pigeon are an English novelty musical group popular in the early 1970s, originating from Coventry.
A spin-off from an experimental music band Stavely Makepeace, the group was fronted by Rob Woodward and managed by him and drummer Nigel Fletcher. Other members included bassist Stephen Johnson. The group's sound was dominated by a heavy honky-tonk-style piano played by Woodward's mother, Hilda.
Lieutenant Pigeon achieved two UK hits: "Mouldy Old Dough", written by Woodward with bandmate Fletcher, which reached number one in 1972, followed by "Desperate Dan" (number 17 in 1973). Both tracks were largely instrumental, with the titles providing virtually the only lyrics. "Mouldy Old Dough" (the title being an adaptation of the 1920s jazz phrase, "vo-de-o-do") became the second biggest selling UK single of the year, behind The Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards' bagpipe version of "Amazing Grace".
Hilda Woodward died, aged 85, on 22 February 1999. She was aged 58 at the time of "Mouldy Old Dough" topping the charts, which made her one of the oldest female artists to feature on a UK number one single.

Yet in the U.S., it didn't even make any of the charts there (Billboard, Cash Box, Record World). One of the songs at #1 in Billboard while this was atop the UK charts was "Ben" by Michael Jackson; "MOD's" last week at #1 in Britain was the first of four weeks for the top in the States for Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now." (The middle two weeks, future UK #1 "My Ding-A-Ling" by Chuck Berry topped the US charts.)
If this is of consolation, one of the US #1's in 1972 - "The Candy Man" by Sammy Davis Jr. - never made the UK charts.

I’m 50 in September and l remember this song fondly. My parents played it a lot. I agree with a few comments here it really is a beautiful piece of music and a classic.
I was actually able to get one up on my husband. Who is six years older then myself. Never heard of the song, and was surprised l knew of it...

I hope it pleases you to learn?..
EVERY oval racing circuit in England that I know of, which holds official banger racing events?
Have played this track in the stadiums on the warmup lap since the 70s.
      An
      EXCELLENT tradition.
Many Engish YT banger race vids catch this playing in the background if their footage shows the start of the race ?
An excellent tradition that has been going on since the 70s and is still going on to this day !!!
      Feel free to
Play it again with a big smile on your face ☺
