pick a career path early (more time to change your mind + even if you do change your mind some clubs/ECs may still be applicable to your future career path)
    *_freshman year:_*
    - pick 2-3 clubs that align with your goals and go to every meeting, make sure the advisor knows you etc etc
    - compete in competitions and win first place
    - figure out if sports are worth your time
    - shadow professionals for experience + connections + figure out if the field is right for you (best if you start young because ppl will be more likely to help you)
    - work on community service/volunteering
    - *summer:* get an internship (doesn't matter if it's unpaid, it's just for the experience + they will be more likely to write you a good rec letter if the position is unpaid)
    *_sophomore year:_*
    - get involved in club leadership positions
    - build ECs as much as possible
    - prep for standardized exams casually (do a practice test on ACT, SAT etc and choose which one you like more)
    - *summer:* cram for standardized exam (don't let SAT score hold you back) + secondary priority: a business, nonprofit, capstone project etc
    *_junior year:_*
    - top level club positions
    - keep the nonprofit/business/ECs/volunteering running
    - keep your grades up!!
    - research different schools/majors
    - *summer:* write all college essays
    *_senior year:_*
    - keep everything running
    - keep your grades up
    - second semester senior year: take a break!!!

@@hopsmax2827hi! I'm not very familiar with business but some things I recommend to do would be speech and debate (for marketing skills), tech student association (for your tech interests and business-like conferences), and any classes which can boost your knowledge in business and tech related stuff, like AP stats, AP economics, or AP csa.
For general stuff, I recommend using your summers like how the video recommended (internships or self learning), but merit-based summer programs revolved around your subject interests would be great too!
For the club, I think you should definitely try starting it if your passionate about it and even more so if it fits your narrative (it is relevant to a personal part of your life). I highly do not recommend starting hobby-like clubs like anime clubs, since they aren't academic at all.
Sorry if my advice isn't helpful, I'm just a rising senior learning the ropes myself 🥲 good luck and have fun!

Senior graduating in a month here, everything in this video is pretty much on point. I can tell you I pretty much did all of these things without following a certain “blueprint”, maybe not in the same order but generally got all of the aspects he mentioned into my applications. Don’t feel pressured to follow this step by step but just be aware this gives you a good insight into the different parts of your application and what you’ll need. One thing I can tell you is that in school I never felt super stressed to do any of this and I actually slacked off quite a bit, but I did the things I was most passionate about without really thinking too much of them and I followed what I was drawn to. At the end of the day, an admissions officer won’t likely know how much work you really put in but rather how you present yourself, your experiences and what you learned, so even if you’re not necessarily in the same situation as me, where you just feel drawn to something and do it, you can replicate that pretty easily. In school many of the people that (no offence intended) gave off the same vibe as him, being very on top of things all the time, looked down at me and tried to intimidate others with all that they were doing but I’m here to tell you that you really shouldn’t pay too much attention to that and just gain what you can from it. I got into 2 of the best schools for my major (think top 50 worldwide) and into some other good institutions. Make sure you enjoy what you’re doing and remember you are probably not alone in feeling overwhelmed.

you all need to calm down and relax. Go with the flow, don't overthink it, you'll end up where you need to be. If you're stressed about your career path/ doing everything that will look good for your college application/ doing clubs you don't actually want to do but you think will make you seem better than the average applicant when you're a freshman in highschool how burnt out will you be once you get into a top/elite school? I went to an Ivy League, and let me tell you something: a lot of the kids there are exhausted from day one freshman year, let alone when they become seniors. I'm just saying, life is not that serious, relax, enjoy and be young!

freshman who are watching this and want to get into a top school,
or even if you're in middle school and it's your dream to be in a top school...
START NOW. Nobody in HS is gonna tell you this bc the advice there is catered toward the majority which are students not aiming for ivies/T20 (which is fine). As for you who is, start making your plans now as to how you're gonna get in.
The transcript which goes to college only consists of your freshman, sophomore, and junior year grades. Not your senior ones (although they're still important). So do good in those years- ESP junior year. I know some people whose GPA's are messed up forever bc they had a bad freshman year. Don't choke yourself out at the beginning
If you're in middle school and shooting for the stars, take the highest classes offered. I know some people who took a lower level class in middle school and in HS they couldn't get into a higher level one bc they were one level behind- agaiin that stays with them for a lot of HS although you can waive into classes and typically (in my experience) you get more class freedom in junior and senior year so this isn't as big a deal but it's something to keep in mind
Please utilize your summers if you're in HS. do what this guy is saying. and KEEP RESEARCHING!!
The earlier you start the more time you have to up your chances of admission!!! You can do this.
And if you're entering this dream late like me, there's still time. Dont let anyone lie to you. whatever you can do, just DO. and if it doesn't work out then adapt and overcome. Life continues
Even if you're a sophomore or a junior there is still time. Keep researching how to get in formulate a plan best for yourself
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now, so please start now!

I never saw this video as a freshman but I've surprisingly followed a very similar path, except instead of clubs I've mostly focused on personal projects which have literally just had increasing levels of impact (that ends up functioning the same as 'getting to a higher position' in your club). I honestly think that might actually be better than doing clubs because independent personal projects are pretty rare (but they are harder to pull off for sure).

Thanks for the valuable insight! I'm a freshman and I wish you popped up in my recommended at the beginning of freshman year😥. My school has a science research program, 10th grade and up, that has a good amount of top 300 Regeneron STS scholars each year. However, from what I heard, the school doesn't provide anything besides some minor instruction and we have to find mentors by myself. I know I want to major in cs, and did many personal projects this year with ML and Python, but have not found a field in science to research. I have some interest in medicine and astronomy, but next to no knowledge of both fields. Will I still be considered for interning if I cold email professors, even though I know next to nothing about the field?

I don't know if this will be any help but as someone who is planning to major in cs too, i recently got a really good internship that did not require experience, so long as you demonstrate interest in the field from past work.
It seems like you did your homework and learned about cs quite a bit, so I definitely recommend sending cold emails! No professor is going to be expecting a freshman to be a professional too, so as long as you show them your passionate about STEM and market yourself a bit with past experiences in cs I'm 100% sure you'll be considered! :)

  • @SirSnakecharmed
    @SirSnakecharmed ปีที่แล้ว +5

I’m two years out of college, and I can confidently say this advice is almost entirely misguided and will do more harm for most people than good.
Went to a T50 school myself, nothing crazy. Graduated 3.4 with an electrical engineering degree and now working at a top aerospace company (Think NASA, SpaceX, Lockheed, Boeing). Got the job from diligence, networking, building the right skills, and modeling what I did from who I saw as my successful peers. In my opinion, the secret to success does NOT lie with any of these factors.
Ivy league institutions are severely overrated when it comes to the corporate world. They sell the dream, but buy you nothing compared to the hype surrounding them. It’s absolutely ridiculous hearing people waste this much of their effort to try to crack their admissions.
People at my job laugh at these schools. We are all very hard working, but i’ve began to realize that there is WAY more merit to NOT buying into the ivy dream as a hard working high school student than there is merit to buying into it.
If your dream is that your hard work will pay off one day, do NOT have that “pay off” be an ivy league institution. This is short sighted. 99% of career paths are achievable without an ivy league education. Your pay off should be getting a job out of college you can get excited for. Finding a good career path is even good enough for most people, knowing in high school what you want to do is a borderline joke to assume everyone can do that. Research recent graduate outcomes for your state school, and some top 100 colleges. You’ll see plenty of great options across the spectrum filled with people like me.
There isn’t some secret club that an ivy education gives you exclusive access too. Look through the graduate outcomes list for them, they’re gonna look similar to most other T50 school. I’d argue for almost everyone watching this video, the easier and more realistic way to get a job at a Fortune 50 company is to be a good hardworking high school student, get into a T50 school/decent state school, cultivate a healthy and normal work life balance (not this grindset), and network in the industries that interest you when the time comes.
You don’t want to go to an ivy. You want to enjoy high school. Focus on not burning out, from high school through college, and doing things you enjoy. Don’t be tempted that your senior year of HS you’ll get to potentially parade around with a “Dartmouth” shirt because now you feel frustrated that your hard work isn’t paying off, you feel smarter than your peers, and that a moment like that would feel really really good.
Ivy league colleges do get you some perks. Maybe the alumni network is good. Maybe the research they do there is something other schools don’t do. But at the end of the day, you are going to get a job out of college and be at the same point as everyone else starting that job with you.
Every extracurricular you did in both high school and college? Doesn’t matter for your resume now. Your high school and college GPA’s? Irrelevant. Grinding since the 9th grade (8 years straight of extra crap) Irrelevant. The guy who went to the state school, lived a normal but hardworking life, has the same job as you and is getting paid the same starting salary. All of this effort, ivy league school, extracurriculars, will feel somewhat meaningless. Not that they don’t help cultivate you as a person, but don’t do them because you think you’re gonna be ahead because of it. This is a trap for high achieving students.

    • @hmmhmm-gd3iv
      @hmmhmm-gd3iv ปีที่แล้ว +1

It’s not actually studying at the icy league school that sets you up for success, it’s the journey that leads up to it.
Think about it, if you wanted to get into an Ivy League school you would have to:
      -work on career related internships
      - making career related connections
      - be entrepreneurial
      - be a great communicator
      - be a great writer (college essays)
      - be great at social engineering
      - be somewhat well versed in the career path before you even get into the Ivy League school
      - get a good SAT/ACT score
      - AND on top of all of the above, you have to have good grades.
Doing these things give you VERY valuable skills in life. What you do in the actual university doesn’t really matter (as long as you’re not getting straight C’s or worse).

    • @marciewebster2490
      @marciewebster2490 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Valid perspective here, however another way to look at it is that if you can get into an ivy (have the aptitude for it) you might as well because what goes unsaid here is that if you can get admitted to an ivy, you can parlay that into a full ride scholarship at a state school, and not having student loan debt? In my opinion, makes all of that work worth it. Not to mention the journey if you plan your time accordingly. It's not really for everyone, but for many this is a really great way to set yourself up for success.

It is quite useful to have a college counselor. They can help answer all of your college-app related queries and review your essays. If you have the resources to pay someone (in whatever capacity that is), it is usually worth it. They can give you some great perspective to shape your resume, get involved in new activities, and put together a strong college app. That is not to say you can't succeed without third-part help, a lot of student are able to. However, it can be in your advantage to have one.
