I am....... very scared now heheh I'm an incoming freshman who wants to do some research. I may be more scared than I was before watching this video but I am also slightly less lost. This video will definitely help a lot for the next four years, thank you :D
I would say that since that usually only applies to top schools, it's not too unreasonable to expect since they're looking for the brightest and most driven minds, i'm sure there are a lot of good unprestigious colleges that don't require you to have written 15 research papers at 16
Hey, I watched the entire video and I'm grateful for the advice. Your insight into the process of research actually helped clear a few misconceptions I've had about conducting independent research. However, I do have a couple of questions in pursuing internships, as you mentioned, and getting resources for these various research topics. Firstly, I just recently got into pursuing research fairs or competitions, such as MIT Think, ExploraVision, Blue Ocean, etc., but I don't feel as if my concepts add too much to the already developed processes. I am adding originality to the projects through custom machine learning models or slight modifications to current systems, but they aren't absolutely new. How do I add this level of complexity to my conceptions independently? Also, what would be a good way to email professors regarding research? I've emailed many professors from various local universities(I live in Michigan), but I['ve had no success so far in being able to receive an opportunity anywhere. Also, provided that I haven't their level of knowledge, in what ways would I be able to contribute significantly to the work that they are doing currently? I realize that these questions are highly subjective, so I understand if you can't answer them with an absolute answer, but I would appreciate any insight you have. Also, just as a side note, would you be open to me sending you an email diving deeper into what I previously mentioned so that you can get a better understanding of my position? Thank you.
Hey Dhruv, I'll try my best to answer your questions with the experience I have. The point you bring up about finding novel "concepts" is very interesting because it mirrors a thought I've also had A LOT as I go through the research process. In high school, I would watch TED-talks of people identifying some brand new chemical that indicates an oncoming brain disease or make discoveries that seem to have no methodical way of finding. The truth is that there are so many ways to tackle research and incorporate new creative thoughts that, unfortunately, I really don't have an exact answer for you. In the video I talk about how I approach research, but there may be more creative ways out there that better explore the those "concepts" that you want to make a core part of your research. Perhaps I'll make an updated guide if I learn more from my experiences doing research in college. However, what I do believe is that creativity is an extremely valuable element in this process. The more exposure you get to the field you're doing research in, the higher the chances are that you might be able to connect the dots and find something new. I remember reading a somewhat "random" article on how diseases can have symptoms and biomarkers in different areas of the body and another publication on how brain disorders can influence other physiological aspects. A little while later, I came up with the idea of exploring heart rate data as a means of predicting seizures, all because I had seen those papers earlier. Hope that makes sense. This response is getting a bit long, so I'll quickly touch on your other questions. Don't feel like when you reach out to professors you need to invent the most brilliant idea ever and then tell them that you can make it a reality. I have some experience in machine learning, as do you, so I try to see if I can integrate some of this past knowledge into the work being done by the professor (or in their field). I put together a proposal detailing some area I'm down to explore and incorporate that into the email. The most important thing this whole process shows is that you're engaged in the work they're doing and that you have some skills and prior experience with research. If you're having trouble getting opportunities locally, expand your net and try emailing other big schools that have research programs or opportunities.
@@frostad5829 Yeah It eventually did work out for me. Rather than just cold emailing, I began to do a bit of research and also got accepted into a summer program at a local university where I was able to meet several professors and get the ability to do research over the summer. I would recommend you try and get similarly involved in the way I did if you want to find some opportunities, for my direct cold emailing didn't work out for me and I emailed around 80-90 professors. I am not sure where you are located, so I don't want to give you his information for false hope since his work is mostly in computational physics and engineering that requires you to go to the university in-person and also have an understanding of the subject already, but I can say that you can definitely find success if you go through a program of trying to network when you have a summer program.

Hey! I have a quick question, where exactly did you publish your papers? Were they online journals? Does it really matter which journal your paper gets published in as long as you have a published research paper? Great video btw, thank you so much for uploading such informative and to-the-point content.
I'm a little late to the party, but allow me to be the messiah. To get to your questions: 1. There are multiple ways to get your research out there. It can be a research article published in a peer-reviewed journal, a conference proceeding, or even a patent, if the work leads to the manufacturing of a tangible product with a unique yet significant application. If you can't find a journal, you can also publish your work as a pre-print with certain repositories like arXiv until you find a better journal for your paper (don't worry, no one can steal your idea here). 2. Yes, it does matter. The better the *Impact Factor* of the journal, the more relevant and key your findings are considered to be. However, a publication is a publication nonetheless, and a publication history of any kind will get you a favourable impression from the admissions committee. *Side note:* You don't necessarily have to do original research. You can also write a review article which is basically a compilation of recent literature in a specific domain/field. Very useful for commentary or to critique any developments in said domain/field. Or you can write a book chapter where you compile literature to explain information like you would find in a text book. There are also certain journals for young professionals. A good example is the one mentioned right above my comment. Hope that helps!
Sadly, there were no options for when I was a freshman because there was an age requirement for everything, but hopefully, this video can get me into the SEAP program where I go and research in a navy lab this year (sophomore summer)

@@mciii Actually? In the same situation as you, just started junior year. Please help me out man, what prior experience did you have in your field and how were you able to get the internship?
Remember when you posted the Brown video and u showed all those cool Epilepsy machines? Those aren’t on Amazon lol so how did you find such specific machines and how did you keep your cost low for independent research?
I try a mix of different approaches to keep my costs low. First, finding the exact machines is a little annoying, but if you do enough reading into different research papers and through scouring the internet its definitely possible. From there, you can either rent the machines (if they are portable and available), reach out to a local lab that might have them (and then go there to test), or use some contacts to get access. Sorry the answer isn't the most repeatable for every situation, but really the most important thing is to reach out to people and try different options that seem realistic. It usually works itself out from there.
Yo Pratik, I need your advice. I recently got to know from a friend that a small HBCU near me has a lab that's working on Alzheimer's research would LOVE to get some high school students. However, I also know that there's a large pharma company that has a paid internship program has a connection to my teacher, who encouraged me to apply. I also know that I've applied for a few of those research programs that release all the way in April. Would you recommend A) going to the small (not well known) college for research, B) Waiting for the Big Pharma to release applications for the season, or C) Perusing more clinical exposure because I might get into the research programs I already applied to? I dont want to get into too many and have to reject offers after these professors accommodate me, but I also don't wanna be overconfident and have no backup plan. What's your advice?
Given the situation here's my input. The actual place you do the internship isn't really that important, in contrast to what you're doing there and whether or not you're enjoying it (special exceptions are really well known universities or programs). In regards to getting paid, I've never really valued it that much because it's typically minimum wage and I wasn't to desperate for quick money in high school. If I were you, I would take in some new factors to consider when deciding where to do your research. Think about how likely it is that you will publish a paper in each location. If you're unsure, feel free to reach out to the professors you might be working with or the people coordinating the program to see how realistic it is (and if you would have a reasonable role as an author on the paper). I think rejecting offers shouldn't be much of a worry unless you personally know the people, so you're better of at leasing sending in a decent application to these other 2-3 programs you're interested in. If you already have a few essays written that you can reuse it shouldn't take you too long (hopefully). Hope that clears things up for you.
@@preachingp dub, thanks so much. I was under the impression that a paid internship was MASSIVELY better than an unpaid internship, and the company mattered more than involvement, so thanks for clarifying that.

when applying for harvard or any ivy league, where do i write or post my independent research?? could i make it into a youtube video or does it have to be some article on a website?? im a freshman in highschool right now, when applying can you post a youtube video as one of you "Extra curriculars" regarding an independent research project. Or do you post a link to your blogging website?? which one is better im kind of confused on what platform i make my research project on so its time stamped dated. which platform or format will be accepted on an application. Thanks in advance
You publish it in a journal. I would encourage you not to publish in this crap high school journals, non of the professors take them seriously. Ideally you contact a tenured college professor that is doing something very related to your work. So maybe your work might have some contribution to their work and they can put your name in the paper(ofc not the first author). It will be WAY more valuable than having a publication in one of those scam high school journals.

I was under the impression that a paid internship was MASSIVELY better than an unpaid internship, and the company mattered more than involvement, so thanks for clarifying that.
bless brother🙏
Yo dude, love your work and info you gave. Where do I follow you on social media?
It's awesome how American kids get started with research at high school😮... We Indians are not encouraged till the very end of our graduation. It's so saddening😢
Relatable yarrr.
so true
all we do in high school is solving PYQs for entrance exams
Does anybody know how to do research and science fairs but... not in science, I know it sounds kinda stupid but I'm more interested in law.
when applying for harvard or any ivy league, where do i write or post my independent research?? could i make it into a youtube video or does it have to be some article on a website?? im a freshman in highschool right now, when applying can you post a youtube video as one of you "Extra curriculars" regarding an independent research project.

Hey Pratik, I am a rising sophmore. So my grandma was recently diagnosed for 4th stage pancreatic cancer and their detection was very inefficient. So then I started scrolling through articles about pancreatic adenocarcinoma and I really liked a method of detecting pancreatic cancer based off spectroscopy. I reached out to the professor by cold emailing but she never responded. What should be my next steps to execute this as self research as I'm very interested and really want to find better detection methods of differentiating malignant and beningn cell tissues. Thanks!

Hey thanks for the video. It was really helpful. I have a couple of questions
When you are talking about independent research. Are you writing literature reviews? I don’t understand what you actually did in your own so understand that you used a software for epilepsy but I didn’t understand in detail about what you did
Hey! I found this video very insightful. I have two main question. How are you able to procure the resources for your research? and How did you go about summarizing your research in your paper? While you were doing the research were you keeping track of the processes in a certain way?
I think the best school for me
Piggybacking a professor is the real answer.
Hey I know this comment is late but is it normal to have to pay for a research internship? Anyways, can you list any online research internship programs for high school students of all nationalities (I am an Indian citizen that resides in Singapore and am restricted to a lot of internships over here because of me not being singaporean)
I was turned down by all the professors I emailed, so I decided to do it myself. Thank you so much for this ;-;
how did you find those professors??
@@sillyorigamininjakid Just cold email them. Any college has a faculty website. They have their emails and bios there
@@smeraarkalgud5703 did u send a resume ?
@@briannahartfield8111 Always send a resume so they understand you a bit more
@@smeraarkalgud5703 Hi! How do I send a resume if I haven't done anything yet? I mean seriously nothing, cause I haven't even given my gcse's yet so I can't show any grades or anything...Also, what are you researching? I'm interested.
Thanks for answering my questions!
Hi Pratik! What I am wondering is what you need to study in order to research first.
What kind of innovation can I do if i wanna do an investigation about politics and international relations? TYSM for ur videos.
Is it too late to get started on research in my sophomore year with the goal of competing and publishing?
Definitely not
Is it necessary that a Research Paper you write as a High School student on a topic ‘no one has thought of before’? Can I just do research on a topic I’m interested in?
No
When I heard Arduino, my heart did a little tap dance hehe🤭
Iam be honest in the past my dream study in 2015
Hey Pratik, I want to do independent research in quantam physics but the math understanding required is really high and since I'm only a freshman taking pre-calculus right now, I don't know how to get any background information and understand it. Any advice?
You are lucky to be raised im USA where you have oppurtunities suurounding you. How can kid who is very talented but born in third world country pursue things you mentioned?
I relate to this a lot, as I don’t have access to things like this around me. I am hoping that this changes in the future
If you were going into med, what made you want to learn how to code? Was it for this project?
NO WAY HI AAKASH
Hey I have just finished a research I did at my technology club about a moon camp that would let astronauts to stay for longer periods, do you think it is a good idea ?
Did you presented it ? Do we always need a supervisor to write a research paper ?
As someone who is looking into going to a Ivy League school this was helpful for me. Thank you! 🩷
Is it required to have a research mentor to conduct research? I have written one research paper and I had a mentor, but I’m not sure if you are required to have a mentor to perform research.
For JEI you need a mentor, whether that be a teacher or parent.
@@hellokitty09-r6h Thanks for responding. I’ll probably write another research paper later in the future and I’ll probably submit it to JEI
Bragging is fool's idea of glory

Do you mind posting your epilepsy paper for reference?

Can you please tell us how to find a mentor
Are the research programs that you pay for it, worth?
Do we always need a supervisor to write a research paper ?
How would you approach research for economics feild?
Maybe do research on psychology of people during a recession etc
Hey, so I'm a rising sophomore in high school who's super interested in STEM specifically engineering but also the arts. Would research be a good option for someone like me (my age and interests ) to add to their resume? Even though as of right now I love 1 research-based and 1 creative career?? Also would schools like Duke and UNC chapel hill offer research for high schoolers (I live in the area by them)
Yes it would be a great idea! I’m also a rising sophomore in high school and I want to become an engineer and actor and I wanna go to ucla or usc. It would definitely help to do independent research bc it would give you a huge advantage in college applications.

is it ti late to apply to a summer research program now as a freshman going to sophmore
lots of summer research programs that i’ve seen so far have had their application deadlines in february so sadly i don’t think so
Wait so it better to do independent research ?
It's mostly useless to "do research" in high school. Learn to be an interesting human being instead.
One question tho
I heard coding?
Do I have to learn how to code too?🫣
Being an expert in coding is CRUCIAL for college these days. You should be already on the same skill as cs major seniors in community college. Then use the coding concepts to craft a project in your own imaginative and creative way
