I finally got a cascade filter about 5 months ago. Figured this is about the right time since its now beginning to discolor. Thanks for making it look simple.
I just upgraded my little RES's setup to a 75 gallon tank and have the 1500 version of the cascade filter. I was just thinking last night how I should clean it tomorrow (today now lol) and then I wake up to see you posted this. it's a sign hahaha
Hey, i also have a RES and im trying to figure out a decent media setup for the exact same filter, would you mind letting me know what you have? Thanks in advance.
Great video! As a former red ear slider turtle owner, I admire your dedication on maintaining a healthy environment for your aquatic pets. A lot of people don’t understand how difficult it is to keep an aquatic turtle without proper filtration, a heat source for basking, and an adequate aquarium. Thank you for sharing!
@@TheTurtleGirl I am considering getting an axolotl as a pet, do you have any links for your setup as to where I could find the equipment online? If not I understand. But either way, there is one thing I have to say…… HAVE A TURTLEY AWSOME DAY!!! 😊
Im a new turtle owner, I found a baby red eared slider at work, it looked dehydrated, and it was injured so i picked him up washed him and made a temporary little set up, now he has a tank with clean water, and a filter and a basking area with some good heating lamps. And your videos have been helpful thank you!!
Hey Turtle Girl! You are one of the main reasons I drastically upgraded my turtle husbandry. I have two red eared sliders and they are only four months old. Thank you so much sorry about your losses of last year, Keep being turtley awesome! 🐢
I watched so many of your videos before I got my first RES. I was wondering if you have any advice for me . I have proper lighting and a large enough floating basking area and I used to find him basking every day. Even at night when the lights off he would go up there. Recently I've only seen him go up about once in the last few weeks. Water temp is at 75 . I have a Penn plaxx cascade 1200. I've played with the height of the bulbs to try and make the platform warmer for him. Any advice?
@@TheTurtleGirlOverall pretty good, only issue I have with it is it can be a pain to prime sometimes. It really keeps my tank pretty clear though. So, I consider that a minor issue.
Just did this last weekend! I always thought the canister filter had to be a lot lower than the tank? If I could use my Fluval 407 with the tank on a lower level, would be one heckuva space saver. We rescued two adult red eared sliders who were on their way to be dumped into a pond-the owner said they were too much work.😢 Thanks to your videos, these guys are living their best lives.
it definitely has to be lower than the water line to be able to flow properly and also to get the filter to prime. I'd say my canister filter sits about 10-12"(?) below the water line, and the tank is also elevated maybe 4" off the ground. I also let the intake tube dip quite a bit before coming back up a bit to connect with the filter. But there are ways to make it work for sure! That's awesome that you rescued two sliders! I'm so happy to hear that.

What I do is wash my canister filter in April and October so I can do the cleaning outside in warmer weather. I've never had to do it more than 2 times per year. I still use the aquarium water to rinse out the filter media.
I do mine one per year and it is a dream. 😭 I don't know how, but parameters are always on point. There are 3 turtles in there, but I think feeding them outside helps a ton.

So I just got my turtle like 3 days ago, I have a water filter that requires the filters to be replaced I dont have one like yours where you just clean the sponge and put it back in and I do have a water heater and the ivb light and heating light above and a basking, she is a very small ( baby) turtle. How often should I clean the water, I do need to aquire a net to get uneatin food out because she won't eat pellets or frozen turtle food cubes and so some of the insects and other food sources do die and end up either on yhe outside or inside my filter. I'm very new at this so please don't freak out on me if I'm doing something wrong but would very much like some constructive critism or advice

When buying new driftwood, I always soak it in hot water, for several days before I put it in my tank. That way my water won't be brownish looking. I put it in a bucket or a tote and put it in the tub and keep changing out the water for several days.
yeah that is a great way to get the tannins to leach out. I also realized after filming that the water is partially also yellow because of the color of my lights. They are very warm - so even with mostly clear water, it can come out on camera looking yellow depending on the white balance.
Hey i need advice, i got a new long neck turtle and he isn't eating he is still a baby (about 6 months) and i got him a few days ago. Do you have any tips?
Is it possible to tell if a turtle is stunted? I have 2 rescuses that had a growth spurt in the first month but havent grown for the next 7 their 3.5 inches and are 4 years old.
Did you get a different one? I remember before you had a Fluval FX4 or FX6 on your turtle tank? I always love these videos you make. I learn a lot on how to clean my equipment. 👍🏼
I have an fx4 on my 75 gallon (which is back at my old house)... this Cascade 1000 I hadn't used for a couple years after I upgraded to thee fx4 on the 75...but when I moved I decided to use it on this tank :)
Can I use RO water for my turtle? I figured it was a fast way to avoid chlorine and the other bad stuff, but I don’t know if it has the right minerals he needs.
it's a great workhorse! Simple, straightforward... I've had it for almost 4 or 5 years (and even purchased it second hand!) and it still runs like a charm
Just put it in my Amazon cart. My turtle Littlefoot has a respiratory infection right now. Taking her to the vet to see if I can save her. Her eyes are capped over and won’t eat. I’m pretty scared and I want to get a better filter for her 40 gallon I have. I have another filter you had that’s good for 75 gallon tanks and her tank is always clean. I have to save her. She’s my baby.
Hi! I’m thinking of getting turtles for the first time. A 75 gallon tank, by any chance do you know what will be the best canister filter to get ? 😅 I always had bad luck with my fishes dying so I’m trying to make sure I have the proper equipment for the turtles .
Can you please make a video on how to set up the penn plex canister filter? I think the out-take tube is too short and that my turtle will knock it off
I have to change aquarium water every 3 days and clean the filter every week. I think I will upgrade to an FX6 next month because I can't keep up with this😂
Before priming, do you fill the filter up with tap water and then put the top on and prime? Or do you leave it empty, open the nozzles and prime, assuming that the tank water will enter on its own and fill the canister to where it needs to be. Thanks!
def not tap water, that would defeat the purpose of cleaning everything in tank water ;) So I leave it empty, and then when I open the nozzles and repeatedly pump the prime button, that forces the air out and water can enter. Only after it is filled do I plug it in though, that's the key to get it properly flowing without air bubbles.
i had a question i was wondering why my basking spot is getting so hot is there anything i can do to not get it so hot it keeps getting to 100f its a double dome light
@@TheTurtleGirl I agree, but you also have a ton of bacteria in in the media, honestly I would replace the filter floss as it can also house harmful bacteria in the long run, just a bit of advice from an old fishkeeper 😝
What about the inside of your tank? Do you do any maintenance such as vacuuming (poop) of the substrate ? Question: If someone is using just a 20 gallon filter let’s say how often would you clean it?
Yes! That's normally a part of the water change routine. This video only really shows the filter cleaning part, but I've done others where I clean the whole tank
If it's a 20 gallon on what size tank? That will also depend. But that being said, a 20 gallon filter on ANY turtle tank is likely not doing as much water turnover as it probably should, since turtles produce so much waste. But I would say at least once a month...if not more frequent.
Not sure anyone could reply to this but I recently bought the aquatic turtle uvb and heat lighting kit by zoo med and when I place it on top of my turtles above tank basking area it doesn't fully sit on top of the metal part, is it safe/won't be a problem to be on top of a bit of the plastic?
Last week i cleaned my filter and forgot to put the rubber band in. It was the right time to clean the house. A towel was not eneugh haha. Don't be like me folks.. Greetings to all :)
Please come back when you're ready. We all miss you dearly.

Well it matters how stocked the tank is, and how big/old your turtles are, but a cascade 700-1500 should work, which is similar to fluval 307 or 407
Can you please make a video on how to set up the penn plex canister filter? I think the out-take tube is too short and that my turtle will knock it off
When should you clean your filter? Monthy or weekly?
I have to change aquarium water every 3 days and clean the filter every week. I think I will upgrade to an FX6 next month because I can't keep up with this😂
Maybe you are overfeeding your stock
Before priming, do you fill the filter up with tap water and then put the top on and prime?
Or do you leave it empty, open the nozzles and prime, assuming that the tank water will enter on its own and fill the canister to where it needs to be.
Thanks!
def not tap water, that would defeat the purpose of cleaning everything in tank water ;) So I leave it empty, and then when I open the nozzles and repeatedly pump the prime button, that forces the air out and water can enter. Only after it is filled do I plug it in though, that's the key to get it properly flowing without air bubbles.
Poking the algo. 🎉 Great to see ya!
I'm back!
i had a question i was wondering why my basking spot is getting so hot is there anything i can do to not get it so hot it keeps getting to 100f its a double dome light
Love the video! I have learned so much with your videos.
I do have a question, How about the filter hoses. How often do you clean them? And how? 😊
There is a wire brush you can buy and clean it with that. I clean mine maybe once in six months when it gets black with whatever is stuck there😅
Thank you so much!!😊 I’m gonna have to go look for that wirebrush. I mine are close to that dirty too, that’s why I was wondering how they clean it.
@@ruthherrera8151 no problem. If they get stuck too often you might be overfeeding the turtles.
Where did you buy your media/ ceramic rings? What material is your other media as well?
Great how to do video, but I have one question, why don’t you just replace the filter floss with new? Love your videos 😊
I could...but it still houses a lot of invisible good bacteria, so I just keep it. :P
@@TheTurtleGirl I agree, but you also have a ton of bacteria in in the media, honestly I would replace the filter floss as it can also house harmful bacteria in the long run, just a bit of advice from an old fishkeeper 😝
If someone gets into the video a bit late it looks like someone forgot to flush the toilet before shooting the video 😂
lol I knowwwww - so gross. xD hopefully no one thinks that
What about the inside of your tank? Do you do any maintenance such as vacuuming (poop) of the substrate ?
Question: If someone is using just a 20 gallon filter let’s say how often would you clean it?
Yes! That's normally a part of the water change routine. This video only really shows the filter cleaning part, but I've done others where I clean the whole tank
If it's a 20 gallon on what size tank? That will also depend. But that being said, a 20 gallon filter on ANY turtle tank is likely not doing as much water turnover as it probably should, since turtles produce so much waste. But I would say at least once a month...if not more frequent.
i have a slider terrapin who is 23 years, eating but no much, and is starting to bite himself, what do you suggest 😱
Have issues priming this you have any suggestions
Have been hearing this is the best filter ? Correct ? Or is this just the highest quality brand?
So small tip I have my cascade filter sitting in a large container from the dollar store to catch all the water when I disconnect/ take the top off
Hey I just got one of those!
Mine is the same, and there will be no problem with it, just see if the turtle will receive the light from it
@@morannn2332 thanks
Please come back to TH-cam, I always am looking forward to seeing your videos.
I got my Cooter turtles about a week ago and I bought them the same basking thing as you do and they refuse to go inside. What do I do?
Last week i cleaned my filter and forgot to put the rubber band in. It was the right time to clean the house. A towel was not eneugh haha. Don't be like me folks.. Greetings to all :)
❤such an awesome set up
