It's amazing the difference between this same speech he gave in 2015 and what he gave here in 2017. I found 2015 to be more entertaining, funny and took 3rd place, and yet, he tightened the same speech for 2017 (less funny and entertaining) and took 1st. Awesome job of focusing on THE MESSAGE
Unfortunately, what makes a makes a good speech in Toastmasters will never be a speech I give elsewhere. The speech is still a good speech, but a format and style that would get me kicked out of a job or politics - where speeches matter most
I agree with one of the commenters. There’s a format to winning. Fact is, if he used the same/similar speech, lost one year and one another, then he must have found what he needed to win or the judges weren’t bias or something.
I watched the 1st and the the 3rd..and personally like the 3rd better (I was more captivated by him). Being a Toastmaster and having served as a judge myself I can totally understand why the 1st is the winner.

Part of the scoring system is the audience response/reaction, using/having props, body movement, vocal variety to name just a few. This is why TM speech contestants tend to 'overact.' I think the 3rd contestant style is more calm/inward, but the 1st is definitely outward which seems to fit the TM criteria better.
I see so many negative comments, but as a neutral and educated audience here's what I have to say. Toastmaster's Speech here is not supposed to be normal in terms of speech delivery. There's a lot of metrics they have to aim to score like presentation, delivery, etc. Although I believe he delivered a great message quite beautifully, he did seem artificial and over the top at times. I still believe that this message and example got him the win so learn from the way he perfected the second half of the speech and nailed the competition.

Wasn't catchy. I don't know what's the criteria of winning here. Sometimes some speeches look over acting & they win. Idk how. Even 2016 that underwear guy was overacting. Indeed they had a good message but it's the way they present that counts in toastmasters. -A toastmaster.

A story teller with voice modulation is all it takes to win the competition, no matter how many times you have given the same speech to present the speech with highs lows emotions happiness and laughter and the pauses taken to deliver is tough

When you have characters in your speech, you take on the role of the characters and act out the characters in the speech. Toastmasters World Championship Public Speaking is a storytelling contest and you will see speakers take on different roles of their characters in their story.

Most people who join toastmasters are mainly trying to get comfortable in front of a live audience. Toastmasters gives them the opportunity to practice in front of a live audience to get comfortable and improve their speaking ability with feedback from experienced speakers. In storytelling, a lot of times people narrate the story and bring in characters so the audience can relive the story with them. When you bring in characters to the story, you become the character in the story and act what happened in the story. This can be an argument- anger, happiness, sadness, fear whatever happened in the story. With the contests, people are usually trying to separate themselves from the other speakers which people may see as overacting or feel they are not being authentic. This can be subjective as the contest itself is very subjective. I feel Toastmasters should change the title of the of The Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking Contest to The Toastmasters World Champion of Storytelling Contest. I feel this would be accurate with the contest and wouldn't confuse people when they watch the contests on TH-cam.

(I have worked in the event industry as a speaker and producer for the last 15 years, so I have seen a few) But, you might be right that I'm compartmentalising too much, so I wish to rephrase: The Toastmaster competition system teach people to speak very inauthentically and overacted. And I totally agree that "World Champion of Storytelling Contest" would be much more appropriate than Public Speaking Contest. But I don't think that's even enough, because: You can tell a story in a way that is believable and still engaging. This is what we actors do... ;-) But that takes serious skills and training. What I'm seeing here in the Toastmasters competition is at the level of storytelling and acting you see at a high school recital or an amateur production anywhere in the world. In this case, overacting is not subjective. It's a pattern/style that is unfortunately supported by this whole structure Toastmasters has created. Thanks for your input!
I do recognise the value of the actual system, and as a speaking coach as well, I do appreciate the chance they give for people to practice the sacred craft of public speaking and storytelling. I just wish they would show a different outcome of years and years of diligent training. Right now, from a professional standpoint, they look like clowns. And many people in the industry actually look down on speakers that have "graduated" from Toastmasters, because of the buffoonery in these competitions. I would love to see them change their style, as there is much to be learned from their system and I wish them all the best
Yes, if it's in a different year, the only requirement is you need a different speech for the Finals than you used in your previous speeches to get to the finals. Obviously he is within the rules of the contest.
Last time I checked this was not a winning speech . I didn't know he came to win with the same speech. Good message for relationships though but not sure if it's fair to other contestants 🤨.
I guess the 2017 competition wasn't competitive as this guy got the third place for the same speech in 2015 however, a true toastmaster Muhammad Qatani performed in that year and I just think that no one outdid him this year but he ain't a true master

To win at least the club contest you have to give at least six speeches of the basic manual. Then you have to be "a member of good standing of a club in good standing". In other words: paid your fees in time ("member in good standing") and at least six members of the clubs has to pay their fees in time ("club of good standing"). The speech has to be your own one, not copied. And then you can "go for it". :-)
I personally feel the speaker performed far better wen he came 3rd few years back! It doesn't seem to be anyway even close to that performance! Flow is missing, not that energy too! BTW Congratulations to him!!!

He didn't. He won the Semifinals with a different speech. For Finals, you have to have a new speech.
