    I was riding a country road about 60 mph with my GF on the back. A wasp lands on the back of my neck. My GF starts swatting the back of my head, and the wasp stings me every time she tries to hit it. This was another instance where Marine Corps boot camp probably saved my life. You are taught to focus on the task at hand and ignore other discomforts, pain, bugs biting, etc.

      Lmaooo, nuts. I was riding a back road at about 30mph approaching a stop sign. Felt a bee hit my neck and stung me good. I have about a 8 minute ride home, and when I got inside, I felt the fucker crawling on my back under my shirt. That's when I realized it was either a wasp or a hornet, so I ran outside tearing my shirt off. Still better than when my friend had a bee fly into his helmet.

    For those that do not know what Counter Steering is.
    LEARN.
    It will improve you cornering guaranteed.
    I am talking round sweeping corners not 90 degree turns.
    To see first hand what Counter Steering can do- Let off your grip on your handlebars as you are heading straight down a road.
    First pick your right hand.
    Push on the handle bar with your right hand gently, Your bike will lean to the right.
    Now push with your left hand, The bike will lean to the left.
    You can use this going around corners to allow the bike to lean for you.
    Many riders are taking turns using body positioning on the saddle and body lean to make corners.
    They are turning the handlebars to the right as they go around a right turn.
    This is making the bike want to stand back up.
    * when you are turning the handle bars you are pushing with on hand and pulling with the other.
    When you are going really slow around a right hand turn you are pushing with you left hand on the handle bars and pulling with your right arm.
    Once you get over about 25mph, you want to do the opposite-
    Push left to go left- Push right to go right.
    * This only works once the bike is going faster than about 15mph.

    Those false neutrals in first and second have caught me out a few times, mostly when taking off at the lights, but practing and completing the shifts properly has eliminated this problem. That's practicing in the parking lot for you. Thanks Uncle Dan for the great education.

    • @gnarthdarkanen7464
      @gnarthdarkanen7464 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Nothing against the parking lots and practice of course. I still do my Figure-8's EVERY week, if nothing else (time)... BUT a lot can be said for learning to TAKE YOUR TIME on a bike. Lots of stuff "goes sideways" when you get rushed or let yourself submit to "feel pressured". Even on the roads, at least in the beginning, focusing on "procedurally correct" will help you miles and MILES further than sweating about how quickly you can get the inputs in.
      OR in short, "Skill and precision first, and the speed will come naturally on its own." ;o)

    • @crudboy12
      @crudboy12 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Yeah I sometimes get neutrals instead of seconds. Need to work on being more positive with the shifting.

    • @MultiRmetal
      @MultiRmetal 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I wouldn't say it's "false" natural but Kawasaki's have a positive neutral system. If you aren't going over (10mph?) then first upshifts into nuetural. Once your over certain speed balls/detents in transmission are thrown out (making natural almost impossible to shift into),....without the correct speed.. The transmission will shift only into neutral, and you would need to double shift to get into 2nd. look up positive natural. Kawasaki is the only brand that have this.

    • @inoahmann7542
      @inoahmann7542 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've hit a false neutral between 4th and 5th a couple of times and had 3rd gear pop into a false neutral under heavy acceleration. I had a bad habit of not pushing the shifter all the way.

    • @GTAmaniac1
      @GTAmaniac1 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      on tomos bikes you often have mis shifts, sometimes you feel like the shifter is going to break your foot, other times you don't even know you're between gears until you get back on the throttle and you just hear the engine revving. On the downhills of the road trip i did this summer i used the false neutral between 4th and 5th (came with 4 gears from factory so the gap between the 4th and 5th was a lot bigger than all the other false neutrals, it was the size of a real neutral) to save a bit of gas, then just shifted into one of the 2 gears after the hill was done.

    ebike kits for modding pushbikes don't include BRAKES or TYRES. Low-speed brakes and tyres are entirely unsuitable for ebike conversions because they accelerate too hard and go too fast. That's why I think ebikes are THE most dangerous thing on the road, not necessarily because of the riders but the machines themselves - most definitely. Particularly the (illegally) derestricted builds that can hit 80mph.

    • @ripp3rjak934
      @ripp3rjak934 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ha i call bs. Aint no way ebikes or modded is more dangerous than entitked drivers and motorcycle riders and their shittier entitled behaviour. When you can USE your car or vehicle as a fucking weapon juat to get rid of something they find inconvenient on the road.
      Whens the last time you saw an ebike going bullying a truck driver or suv to push them off the road.
      The reality is that drivers with emotional and distraction problems is the biggest hazard on the road its fresking frightening really.

    3:03 Another target fixation. I used to try to practice NOT target fixating. If there's a bit of trash on the road ahead, I make myself notice it and look at where I should go.
    I found out I have do this DAILY. I quite doing this and fixated on an oncoming truck last week. My clutch lever "thocked" against his truck. There was no damage and I didn't go down.
    Scared the crap out of me. I chastised my self all the way down the rest of the mountain. I will now drill myself about seeing the threat and immediately looking away to the route I must take EVERY TIME I ride now.

    The first guy with that bike, the full leathers - and then the most beginner crash I've ever seen, not even entering the corner too fast or anything. Imagine sharing the streets with riders this unskilled.
    I admire how you can stay positive and try to help the guy out by explaining everything instead of just going 'Maaaaan, git gud and stay off the road until you're there, you're an absolute menace to everybody!'.

    • @georgecrisan9499
      @georgecrisan9499 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      all fine until you realise he has no mirrors on the bike. For me this was always a red herring. Is ok to be new, is ok to miscalculate and fall, happens to many of us.

    • @TheGrandmaMoses
      @TheGrandmaMoses 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@georgecrisan9499 Oh do not get me wrong, of course it is normal to fall, this crash seen right here is so normal that you can instantly recognize it as a beginner's crash - that's how often you've seen it by now. Misjudged the turn slightly, fixated, no muscle memory, just went straight without actually doing anything, also obviously without any clue on what to do when it happens. Just froze.
      I guess it's the second most common self-inflicted crash after grabbing the old handful, in front of even the lowsider. Happens, sure.
      But when it happens to a guy that tries to punch way above his weight class out in the twisties and not in a parking lot, it stops becoming cute and necessary and instead starts becoming dangerous to everybody. I mean, you or I could drive along that bend in that moment and our last thoughts would be 'Wait, why is that guy on my....' If he hit us on our left, we're going down that hill.

    • @georgecrisan9499
      @georgecrisan9499 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@TheGrandmaMoses I see your point. I agree. Many want to run before they can walk. When I’ve got my license, as long as you passed the test even as young as 18 years old you could jump on 600/1000cc.
      A lot of youngsters died in that period in Romania. Now I think you need to be over 23 years old to be able to ride legally any cc bike.

    • @TheGrandmaMoses
      @TheGrandmaMoses 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@georgecrisan9499 In America they can be 16 as far as I know, and the driver's education is not comparable to our european 'driving school and you need to get like 24 driving hours and 20 theory hours in class in before your test, and the test is 55 minutes on real roads'. It's heaps and bounds cheaper because of it, though.
      I think, and please do correct me on that, that you do not even have to take that one day course that is offered in America, MSF, you could just go to the DMV and do your test and get your license if you can do some figure 8s and stuff on a parking lot. So you haven't even necessarily had one single lesson with a skilled human being before being able to buy and legally ride an H2.
      These crash videos show the direct outcome imo. If they gave me 1000cc at 16 instead of 125cc downgraded to 15HP and limited to 80km/h, I would be dead by now.

      @@TheGrandmaMoses I've recently become aware (repeatedly) of just how LUCKY I've been. Grew up in Tennessee (so you can research if you like)... At 15 a buddy in school and I went halfer's on an old Honda Rebel, basket case... $100...
      The rules at his house was to learn enough about the bikes FIRST to put that one on the road, and then his Uncle (former Motorcycle Corps instructor) would take us under his wing and coach us... SO in that little adventure I got INCREDIBLY lucky.
      By my 16th birthday, we were in the DMV lot, and took turns for the "On Cycle Skills Test", which was entirely ONE (1) lap around the lot and parking back in the same space where we started... No MSF sheets or cert's... The "written test" was 25 questions, 6 of which were entirely drugs and booze related, so not a damn thing to do with traffic, handling, weather, nothing... Didn't even need to know the hand-signals for turns and stopping...
      There were times I hated that old man (My buddy's uncle) for the attitude... Times I didn't think any amount of freedom with a motorcycle could POSSIBLY be worth it... AND once we'd gotten through his various slolums, drills, and practices to beat times and make short-stops, swerves, and all on asphalt in parking lots... He drove us out to a flea-market lot FULL of gravel and mud and potholes... TO DO IT ALL AGAIN...
      Looking back, I love the old geezer. I don't even mind that he made us, two, put the bike back together after the drills of riding over a gravel/dirt hill and dropping the bike at speed with purpose... 35 mph... and we were supposed to walk away unscathed... It took a couple tries before it was "right" by the old man... I resented every faring and mending the fenders... the skint legs and bruises EVERYWHERE... It was the first time in my life I ever knew of a man who had a VERY punchable face...
      AND I'm also still firmly in the school of "You should NEVER IN HELL have to lay her down"... BUT there's still that one in a million... AND if you're going down anyways, it might help to have some idea of how to take that hit...
      I got over the angers and resentments pretty quick... Even in the day, I at least learned to respect the old man because he DID authentically have real and useful wit and wisdom. Over the 30+ years after those lessons and getting my license, though, I've just grown to appreciate his influence more with every passing year or so... AND having the internet and TH-cam's litany of fails and other videos, I've come to appreciate just how G** D*** LUCKY I was to have a buddy with an Uncle who probably gave more of a damn about me than my own parents.
      BUT recently I moved back to TN... AND I had a paperwork snafu that let the motorcycle license lapse. While going through the motions to get a new one (easier than the circle-jerk of fixing the DMV) I found that nothing's changed... Right down to doing ONE (1) lap in the parking lot for my "Skills Test". I imagine, this being "moonshine territory" and with the opioids and meth' as popular as they've become... There are probably some folks who try and fail the tests... BUT at 15 you CAN get a motorcycle license here. It's still 16 for a "full size car" license (Class D)... AND there's a "waiver system" you can take to court for a "Hardship License" if you're 15 and need to drive for some reason... I'd even imagine they'll have something similar for motorcycles earlier than 15... but I don't know.
      ALSO interesting... (side note)... Relating to the size of a motorcycle, you don't even need to get a tag, license, or insurance for anything smaller than 250 cc's... THAT is the same in North Carolina (which borders TN), and the popular opinion is that it frees up the DUI's to get motorscooters and mopeds smaller than 250 since they can't get a "grown up license" anyways... SO when you see a grown adult on a kid's scooter, moped, or minibike of some kind, you have a pretty good idea of who/what you're dealing with... at least around here...
      AND there's a certain dubious, if not outright derogatory, connotation for riding those sorts of things in public in general. ;o)

    I was nearly killed by a similar situation to 4:00 a few years ago. I was in the right of two left turning lanes that turn onto an overpass, with a large truck blocking LOS in the lane to my left. The light changed so we had a green, but the truck beside me didn't go. Because I couldn't see around the corner, I waited, and more than 3 seconds after we got the green, a car blew through the intersection going more than 80 kph. If they'd hit me, they would have flat out killed me.

    I practice swerving with manhole covers. Start at slow speeds but work your way up in speed. If you haven't practiced swerving at hwy speeds you need to. It's a whole new thing doing it at 55mph vs 25. Your have to make it swerve hard and back hard to be a real swerve. If you haven't practiced it much at all...work up to higher speeds incrementally.

    I’ve personally seen a guy nearly crashing( sparks at 130+kph). After the winter it was one of the first riding days and in a normally easy corner a dip had developed during the winter. I had encountered it on the way out but was slow enough to compensate. On the return trip some guys overtook me and went quite fast into the corner and one of them caused a lot of sparks (footrest or exhaust i think). I managed to swerve onto the hard shoulder and slow down with the rear brake and downshifting. Then I drove very slowly on the hard shoulder to the next rest area. Just finished watching "Near Death Experiences" from 3 months ago. And Dan, you mentioned the rider on the Indian had his bright lights on. You say, "not sure we should be doing that." What is it with people not teaching high beams on in the daytime?????? All of this safety knowledge to do this and look out for that, but don't do the single most easy thing for others to see you. Oh no let's not teach that. In fact, let's tell riders not to do it. What is it, 8 or 9 out of 10 cars that turn left in front of a motorcycle claim they did not see them? Don't wear bright or florescent colors either, ride with camo on because you don't need to be seen. I have 40 yrs of experience. That doesn't mean I think I know it all or cannot improve my skills. But I know one LOGICAL thing, and that is from day one I have ridden with my HIGHBEAM on in the daytime. If it makes some drivers mad, so be it. Atleast they see me.

    17:03 in the uk these mini roundabouts can be a bit confusing but i think one of two things happened
    1. the rider didn't put on right turn signal to show he was continuing with the roundabout and the driver assumed the bike would go left and there was room to take off
    2. the driver wasn't paying enough attention because while the bike could slow down in time and go behind, if the rider were in a car instead it could've been a bigger issue and the driver wouldn't have made the same silly decision

      regardless of this, the rider shouldn't need to slow down and go behind, so dan saying that "they were going, just get behind them" isn't great advice.

    Talking about familiar corners... the @RNickeyMouse crew filmed Mulholland Drive at the same places regularly. I kept seeing bike after bike crash in the same corner, usually lowsiding, and it wasn't obvious why at first - it didn't seem to be gravel or dust. But I looked closely at many of the videos, and saw that there was kind of a recessed pavement area right before where the crashes happened. Sometime you could even watch the suspensions unweight there, and then the tires would start to slide, and skriiitch-boom. I suspect that it is not visually obvious to the riders as they approach, probably looks no different than the rest of the road surface.
    A lot of Mulholland crashes were due to over-exuberance, everyone trying to show how fast they were.Inexperienced riders over their heads. Even the really fast, experienced riders were pushing too hard, riding right at the edge of traction. I try to stay away from roads with a "reputation" for just that reason. Plenty of great twisty roads without riders trying to show off.

    If the cyclist was on a route that is designated for bicycle priority, the motorcyclist is required to give way to the bicycle just like any other motor vehicle. Some jurisdictions allow Idaho stops for bicycles at some intersections. I'm not excusing the cyclist, because it looks like he was being stupid but bicycles are NOT governed by motor vehicle laws. It is highly dependent on your jurisdiction. You'd better know as a motorcyclist what you can and can't legally do around a cyclist. Pretending like, "they just want to be treated like any other vehicle" is incorrect. Different laws apply.
