    Lane splitting at speed is foolish. To me it's ok if traffic is at a crawl or stopped but you will pay the price sooner or later if doing this at higher speeds. I know the "expert" riders can't be told anything but in case you are on the fence and want to enjoy riding the rest of your life, don't do it.

    The guy that dumped in the 'easy' turn was just going to fast for his comfort in my opinion and wasn't willing to lean more. I think you can see him 'turning' the steering wheel more so than leaning in the turn. It looked to this inexperienced rider that he was trying low speed turning maneuvers with the handlebars while needing higher speed leaning/counter steering to make the turn.

      I did that once on my dual sport. I started to go into a turn. The bike didn't lean how I expected, I got scared, panicked, and drove straight into a field. Hello again Dan. For your watchers here is a mental exercise they might try. Visualize a carborundum wheel on a bench grinder spinning at full speed. Now visualize your elbow, shoulder, hip, knees, face being mashed against that grinder and held there for about 5 to 10 seconds. Now, when you get on your bike and are riding at freeway speeds glance down at the pavement buzzing past in a blur just inches below your foot. Remember that bench grinder? There it is, and it is always with you when you ride.

    got my license a couple weeks ago and have been riding intermittently cause of the weather but love it! (have a 2016 ninja 300) had my first heavy rain ride Friday evening cause i got stuck in a pop up flood storm and that was scary but took it slow and made it home. it was amazing to see how much traction you loose on pavement when the roads are soaked. The painted lines and markings on the road are especially slippery when they're wet, because the layer of paint removes/decreases the amount of friction the asphalt usually gives you, so be conscious of that if you get caught out again and make sure you are avoiding riding on top of any if you can help it. Also look out for leaves in the road and, believe it or not, grass clippings. Even in dry conditions, grass clippings from lawn mowers spitting it into the roadway when people mow next to the curb is like riding on glass. Avoid those like the plague.

On this bend the rider would get better vision by riding on the left side of the lane. Turning in too early is a common error.

    the video at 1:31 is literally one of the things I have to learn at my motorcycle course atm. There's a traffic cone on the right and one on the left. So you drive through 2 cones next to each other in third gear, going around 50 km/h. So the moment you drive through the 2 first cones, you move the gas up and swerve to the left from the first cone, and then right from the second cone.
    You basically learn how to avoid 2 targets by swerving twice.

    • @Soliye.
      @Soliye. ปีที่แล้ว

      That one was fun.
      The evasive maneuver that stressed me out was the one where you'd have to quick react and swerve either left or right (depending on where the instructor pointed his arm). and then come back the other way. This test, by the book, is fine. But for some particular reason for us it wasn't a light or a device pointing where to go. It was our instructor standing right ahead of us who'd point a direction once you're close enough. Most of the time I'd just end up swerving before he gave a direction.

Riding dirt bikes for a few years and then decided to get a dual sport during the pandemic to make the transition to the street since there was nothing else to do and little traffic. Having that background is definitely a huge advantage, because you're already used to way less than ideal conditions and having to react to bumps and slipping/sliding around, and you're already in the habit of wearing protective gear. It was learning to ride smoothly in traffic and not being herky jerky that took some getting used to.

    While you, yes, will have more space cushion for cars that have crossed over to your side you will have an disadvantage to choosing the left lane.
    If you choose the left lane this is your advantage.
    When you ride the corner and spot the car heading towards you, you will now have more total braking distance to the outside of the curb.
    You know have a better total distance to react, brake and swerve o compared to the distance to the outside of the curb from the middle lane.

    As to that oil the guy hit. I was riding to work last week and saw a red, plastic gas can in the middle of the road. Something I didn't think about but saw in time was the LARGE puddle of gas all around it.

    at 4:18 I partly disagree, at least on narrow twisty roads and blind corners. In a left turn, stay right (but away from the dirty stuff). I know that riders often fear to stay right. Practice and start slow until you get used to it.
    The narrower the road, the more stick to the right. Most of the time, I ride in the alps (for me the road in this scene is almost a straight highway). If i.e. a bus comes along with the front crossing the center line even if its wheels are on the correct side, chances are you will be decapitated. On the center position, the head is often on or over the line. Left position is a NoGo, center often is still dangerous. I almost died several times: horrified, riding behind other riders, sticking their head to the other side.
    Keep the 20% safety margin of skill level, as noted many times here, to still be able to change to middle if needed. Stay right, until you see the exit and know what's coming next. Then lean more, aim at the late apex on an almost straight line, right the bike and accelerate, if the path is free. Because the bike is almost upright now, the danger of losing traction is minimal. That's why this line is often quite fast, you can use more of the acceleration potential of the bike, in a safe way. As racers say: a clean corner exit matters.

    I am still not fan of lane position 2. Only if I am in quiet or desert road. I moved from 3 to 2 on left turn and 1 to 2 on right turn. In busy roads lane 1 and good space from front vehicle. Car's can see me better, if there is a small object like a rock in lane 2 cars don't move and you won't see. Most of all focus focus and focus.

    People who overtake on a blind bend/corner should have their license revoked immediately. Its not a mistake, its a deliberate conscious decision that puts the oncoming traffic in mortal danger.
    I'm not a fan of too many rules and if it was my choice i would repeal or down grade plenty of laws. But this is one of those things I would want a judge to throw the book at them for! If you choose to put someone elses life at risk because you can't be bothered to wait for a suitable and safe place to overtake, I have zero sympathy for you.

  • @nathangehman7018
    @nathangehman7018 ปีที่แล้ว

    With regard to the clip where the van was passing on the dotted white line and almost hit the motorcycle head on, too many people blindly follow the given road rules and that makes things dangerous.
    By learning to break the rules, you become a better driver or rider. There is a section of road on my daily commute that is flat and offers good sight lines, and has no posted speed limit. So i floor it on my car through there. But the issue os right at the end there is a hump that you cant see over. Right behind it is a stop sign and people coming over the hunp the other way for whatever reason like to cross over the double yellow line. So while I might go 75 through the rest of it, I slow down to 30 at the hump because i have no idea what is on the other side.
    This smoothbrain van driver just saw double white and he couldnt see anybody coming, so he assumed it was safe. Nevermind the fact that he could only see 10 feet of road in front of him, and that beyond that 10 feet of road he can see, there could be people because the sightlines are bad.
    This kind of active driving where you analyze if you have enough information to perform a maneuver should be encouraged.

    Mandatory Gear for a rider:
    Rated Helmet
    Armored Jacket
    Armored Pants
    Real riding gloves
    Real riding Boots
    GoPro or some other camera to document for insurance.

    • @JP-xd6fm
      @JP-xd6fm ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but some people is riding motorbikes cheaper than what you listed.
      It depends on where you ride and what are you riding.
      I used to have a sportsbike 750cc 150hp and I was allways wearing full leather suit 1000€, good motorbike boots and gloves, 600€ and a 1000€ helmet. Now I ride a small bike and I just got a summer jacket with protections, a summer gloves and a helmet, all of it for around 450€, no boots no armored pants. I'm going slow so not long slide on asphalt is possible.
