- During my previous video, I realized my planer blades need some serious attention.
I was told that the blades for my planer are not intended to be sharpened but rather replaced. I love a challenge so I decided to try anyway.

What a great idea! Where did you come up with the idea for that jig? Your approaches to problem solving are definitely unique. Nice work!
Thanks. My full-time job entails troubleshooting and fault finding and I guess 10 years of doing jobs like that has refined my way of approaching problems. I generally start with what I want to achieve and work my way backward. Also, when doing something that hasn't been done before I find that a scale drawing is very important (as opposed to rough hand drawings) because it is much easier to visualize any potentials flaws in the design.
It looks like everyone in the world has an old set of those blue green bath towels!

How do you keep the angle fixed on a pair of rotating hinges when you don't fix the distance between the sliding part to the stone fixed?
Very nice work. Those old blades looked like they had really taken a beating. Now they look brand new. I'm sure they cut way better now.
Much better indeed. This project was way overdue.
I guess you'll have to decide what's cheaper, buying replacement blades or replacement stones. You'll wear a kerf down the stone a lot faster running it down one spot.
I can get a set of replacement blades for my Dewalt for $25-50. That, with the materials and time you spent putting that together, and then sharpening - just doesn't add up - especially when you're going to kill your sharpening stones like that.
I commend your creativity and enterprise though! I thought that this was something I might want to do - now I know it's something I DON'T. Thank you for clearing that up.
Using a thick black sharpie to draw across the blade exposes any high spots

Well done! You should consider sharpening your drill bits as well though... every time I see you drill and smoke starts to form something inide me breaks.
Some of those bits are from the first set I bought when I started this hobby. Cheap nonsense haha. It's probably time for some new ones.

Haha. I'm a big fan of not buying new crap when you have something that will do the job. And it's very simple to sharpen drill bits! You'll improve your life quality so much with sharpened bits that SA will skyrocket on the worlds happiness charts...
I can sharpen drill bits but it's usually a task that takes a bit inspiration for me to get into. However, because the bits I have are very low quality they dull quickly so replacing them is a better option for me than sharpening them.
There are no second hand planers for sale here in Paraguay. Most shops want your kidney for that machine but I managed to snatch a good deal on a new Makita 2012NB. Haven't tried it yet because I am still working on lights and electricity. Bought the same Makita table saw as well so I can follow exactly your video installing it in the workbench. Didn't want to sell the house for a DeWalt.
I know the feeling. Power tools are very expensive here also. That's why I still haven't managed to upgrade my planer. The Makita is very expensive though and it is unlikely that I will find it second hand. I'm looking at the Metabo DH330 or the Jet JWP -12.
@@WoodshopJunkies Hiya, you should try get a triton tpt125 , wonderful machine, as is cheapr than all of those you mentioned. And blades come with two sharp sides so you can switch them when one side gets dull. Cheers and good luck.

Did you say "no need to over complicate things"? This is the most complicated sharpening jig I've seen.

Nice idea, just note, if you do this a few times the bevel ankle will decrease in time. Jy sal die hoek moet dophou.

With lumber prices being what they are in SA I tend to use what I can get my hands on.
It would be more logical to sharpen 3 knives at the same time
Wouldn't using sandpaper instead of the stones be much easier? The paper is much wider and you wouldn't have to worry about if the stones have gotten uneven.

Nice adjustable jig but for simplicity did you consider something like this? I copied this one yesterday and seems to work really well and does both of my thicknesser blades at the same time

Wrong! Thanks to hinges, the angle will be different in every move of the jig - depend how close to the sharpening stone is the jig.
Won't work. all knives have to be in the in the jig at the same time and sharpened that way . If there is even a thousandth of an inch difference in width of the knives the narrower knife will never touch the wood
Well, mine are on springs, so they rise to the set (until you reach the end of the lozenge-shaped lug holes). This is the best jig I've seen and I shall make one at once - I work with pallets, and I miss a nail every single time, sometimes on the first pass with a new blade! I sharpen my own blades all the time, but not as well as this!
I did a much simpler and sharpening the two blades at the same time
You probably don't look quite as handsome while sharpening though. And after having seen the video you talk about I would be very worried about the hardening of the blades once you're done with them.
@@boeckstyns I had to go through the emery first because they were well worn the result was excellent, usually I use the sandpaper. Thanks for watching.
You’ll never get that thing set up accurately enough.
How did you come to that conclusion?
Joe blow is right we are talking thousands of an inch here you will never get that kind of tolerance with a wooden jig plus both knives have to be sharpened in the same jig at the same time
