    I hope people realize the opportunity here. Having come from the Roland G-707 G 700 days up to the GK3 / GR-55, AXON 100/Triple Play etc this is a major giant leap in accessibility (financial) and convenience on top of tracking improvements and all without hexaphonic pickups!!! I'm more than glad to have purchased MG to encourage development and reward such dedication to making this possible. I thank you and congratulate you, developers, for this achievement! Very cool times in guitar midi!!! Buy it now!

    I'm glad I chanced upon this. I had a "Roland-ready Strat" and the Roland guitar synth of the time around 20 yrs ago. Beyond the sounds of the Roland box itself its tracking meant no real use of virtual instruments was anywhere in the vicinity of doable. I didn't know audio-to-MIDI had developed so all you need is software and an electric guitar. (I'll never be any keyboardist.)

      Audio to MIDI has indeed come a LONG way from the days when Roland was pretty much the only game in town. I also have a GR ready strat and its actually still usable with the MIDI Guitar 3 HEX software. Its an extra $150 above the $150 for the base license but if you are playing multiple strings (i.e. chords, troads, double stops, etc...) it is a noticeable difference.

    Have a Midi guitar Casio MG-510.. The damping is very important. Sometimes I use to put tape over the strings near the bridge. Unfortunately the electronics on that guitar has an issue. Sorry for posting on a 3 month old video (as of this writing), but I expect this video to be a valuable resource for anyone getting started or trying out MG3 for a long time. At least until if/when you make an updated version at some point if you feel it's warranted and are so inclined.
    With that verbose qualifier out of the way I had an input gain question, since I have a similar audio interface. I'm using a Focusrite 2i2. The latest thinking with input gain as it relates to popular amp sim software is to set the interface gain as low as it goes for more realistic amp sims. Or to bump up the gain only modestly and use the amp sims input gain to bring it back down (with this latter approach supposedly resulting in a better S2N ratio). This topic will likely continue to be debated, but since we're NOT talking about an amp sim here, but rather conversion of polyphonic audio to midi, where a good signal to noise ratio is desired, what are you finding works well with your Scarlett 2i4? Obviously this isn't going to be a one-size-fits-all answer, since different pickup have different output levels, different players will have a varying ranges of dynamics in their playing depending on how they play (agressive/light picking, tapping, fingerstyle, hybrid-picking and on and on). Nevertheless, what's working well for you in your setup in terms of the gain knob on your Focusrite? Are you keeping at its lowest or boosting it a bit?
    Sorry for using so many words to ask such a basic question. Bad habit of mine.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ok, so i’ll do the completely opposite thing, and keep this as short as I can. I keep input gain as low as I can possibly have it in MG3. I feel it is the best thing for dynamics. MGHex on the other hand is much harder to dial in and I can’t offer any likewise simple settings suggestions for that.

    • @c.g.vonhagenstein7576
      @c.g.vonhagenstein7576 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I appreciate you doing "the opposite thing". Agree with the dynamics aspect. Not planning on testing having a compressor between my guitar and MG3 for the same reason, even though I might use a compressor for other styles of playing. Thanks for the input, no pun intended.

    Can't wait for this to fully release. Just discovered the world of MIDI guitar and realllllly want it to be better than it is. Tried a few Jamstiks and apparently they don't know how to manufacture a guitar, returned them all, then picked up a Fishman Tripleplay and I'm finding the software end of that disappointing (at least, as long as I can't find a way to compress the velocity range, which so far I haven't).

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the MIDI guitar dynamics. I am not happy with that part either. But hopefully, those days are gone with MG3. I can use my favorite guitar an retain the full dynamic span for almost any virtual instrument or synth. Now it is just up to me to communicate this newfound knowledge to the rest of the world. 😬 I am hoping for a "word of mouth" movement to help spread the message. 🤗

      velocity 0-127 ? or latency U mean ?

    • @bosneb
      @bosneb 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sepic5407 Yeah, the one thing I liked on the Jamstik was I could just set the min velocity to like 50+. This really helped it pick up hammer on's and pull off's, and it just compressed the dynamic range between 50-127. On the Fishman, so far it just seems to have velocity gains, so I can just boost the input so it sees light playing as 50+, but then most of my playing is just blasting at the top end, everything coming in 127, almost nothing in between.

      Thank you. All in good time! I remodeled my studio the other day. Mostly a new Studio desk so that I can get my Kawai VPC 1 out of the way. But another thing: I just watched a four-part series on Norwegian jazz. About "fire store" (Andersen, Christensen, Garbarek och Rypdal) , and also Karin Krog and onward. This was REALLY good. I guess you have seen it already, but it just came out on Swedish Television, so I binged it in a day: www.nrk.no/presse/programomtaler/ny-nrk-serie-om-det-norske-jazzeventyret-1.16766604

      @@lofileif That's really cool. I haven't seen it. Maybe I'll have to give it a look. Very good jazz musicians. Karin Krogh too, even though I have a childhood memory of her singing the most manicly upbeat and shrill and terrible version of the jazz standard "When you smile" in a show on NRK. It was horrid. I guess I must have been about eight years old at the time, but that experience stuck with me so bad that it's just during the last ten years I have been able to listen to her without having it destroyed by at the same time hearing that one in my head. ;-) Today I wonder if she might have been on speed at that time, or something. Congratulations on your remodeling and new studio desk. So now you have the Kawai in a keyboard drawer/retractable shelf, or something like that? 🙂

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@hjvarfjell Well, this series was well made and guided me through a richer Norwegian Jazz scene than I would have dared hope for. Karin and her connection to John Surman, Nils-Petter Molvaer, Eivind Aarset, and the George Russell story. Most interesting. Never mind your previous "bad experience" ( you can skip the first chapter if you must, but I found it all very educational). And yes I have the keyboard on a desk that neatly tucks away, so I can start using my other controllers too finally. I have a Seaboard, and a Sensel Morph and a couple of other controllers that I haven't been able to find room for before.

    • @hjvarfjell
      @hjvarfjell 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lofileif Oh, I think I'll manage listening to Karin these days. She's a very good singer and she's been working with several of other great jazz musicians. 😊 Did the series also cover Radka Toneff? She's one of my favorites, and we lost her way too early. Depression is a bitch. Oh, well. I was aware that you had the Seaboard. I've seen it in the background in a few of your videos. Too bad the Morph is discontinued. It looked interesting. Must be good to be able to have them out and use them for more extended periods of time, without having to clear them away every time.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @hjvarfjell It did indeed mention Radka. I knew of her work with Steve Dobrogosz but I never knew she was Norweigan.
      And yes, the Sensel Morph really brought some stuff to the table that was pretty unique. I love to split it into a three note plate and work with multiple fingers for the same tone initially, but to microtonally slide back and forth. It gives me another way of working with tension and release, other than harmonic vehicles that is.
      But there are a few others that can make similar things, like the Haken continuum. But in a completely different price range. 🫣

    In audio settings I am only given the option of single threading or multithreading , and your video chose auto-threading , which should I choose ? Many thanks and apologies if you've already answered this in the many comments
    My next step is ipad midiguitar 3 ( when it drops) for live playing in my band, using the wifi portable setup you showed previously , Irig HD2,midimitr, UHost , powerbank etc
    my ipad is new and doesn't have the 3.5mm audio out jack , do you have a recommended USBC-C hub to provide an audio out at the same time as the USB-C in?
    Kindest regards and thanks again!

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Autothreading is a feature coming with the next version of the beta, so you’ll just have wait a little. Use single if it isn’t struggling. If you hear obvious crackling you can go to multithreading, but that might mean slightly more latency.
      I am not sure my previous setup for the iPad is going to be the best with MG3. I will most likely have to buy a new iPad (the one one I used for MG2 is way too old) and then I might be able to come with specific recommendations, but sure, I will most likely need some sort of USB hub to at least use both an audio interface and the Uhost. But let me get back on that when it is time? 🤝👍

      Oh, I am using this JB Audio MPEfy for maximum playability. But before you run off and purchase anything you don't need, the Hextracker is just undergoing functionality updates and is soon going to support string-to-channel assignment. (Like FTP or Jamstik) And this also means a little extra something for any Amplesound instrument, as you can start using their MIDI Guitar settings. I don't know how well that is going to translate to all the different instruments depending on how they are set up, but you should definitely be able to get the same kind of tracking as I do with MPEfy here. And also Ample P is not as playable as the upright or my other favorite, the Jaco fretless. Those are really awesome virtual instruments. 😀

      Of course, you can use recorded input to trigger virtual instruments in or after MIDI Guitar 3. how do you get midi out of the plugin and into a midi track in the daw?

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, it depends a little on what DAW you are using, but generally you open MIDI Guitar 3 as an AUDIO Fx on an AUDIO track in your DAW, where the conversion to MIDI takes place. Then this is forwarded to a MIDI track either directly (if you are using a VST plugin) or by picking it up together with your other controllers (standard way for the AU version to work). Check out the DAW guides on the JamOrigin TH-cam, and see if your DAW is accounted for. www.youtube.com/@JAM-ORIGIN

    Very interesting video. However, I did not understand what steps to take in order to assign via VST a sound via Kontakt 7 since in your video the guitar or double bass sound has already been assigned.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You use Kontakt in the same way as you do in any DAW. First, open Kontak in any of the free slots in any of the chains, then go in and choose a sound in Kontakt itself. If you are thinking of the assigning controllers part, I have a whole series of videos of how to do that.
      May I suggest an order to check these out?

      Hi, I downloaded and installed MIDI Guitar 3, as an operating system I use Windows 10. As audio device I set my M-Audio AIR 192 6, put the buffer size to 128, it doesn't show me automatic threading but I can only choose between single or multi threading. Basically I followed everything you said in the video, but no sound ever comes out (my sound card works fine). As an additional thing I have also tried assigning sounds from Native Instruments installed on my computer by first doing the Plug in Settings scan and then clicking on Instruments but nothing happens and no Native Instruments screen appears for me to choose sounds. At this point I am wondering if in order to get it to work you have to purchase the license first or in case you can also use it in trial version how can I get it to work? Thank you.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@massimosposaro6974 First, Automatic threading is a feature in the next update. Second, I am using Mac, so there might be some differences in the way we set up. I don't know the first thing about the ASIO drivers and stuff like that. You can probably find information on the MIDI Guitar Forum about that. jamosapien.com
      Now, what does it say when you go into settings/Audio devices? Are you using the correct channel for your guitar? Is anything showing in the MIDI Guitar tracker interface (beams of colored light corresponding to your note triggering.)? If you go to the introduction patch and click on the keyboard, can you hear anything? You don't have to buy anything to try the software. That would go against the purpose of having a trial.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes; I have used it in GigPerformer. Depending on what setup you are using there could be an issue with setting up with multiple instances of the plugin. This is, of course, to be solved (it is still in beta) but in the meantime, you should probably stick to using a) The standalone version of MG3 outside of GP, or b) using one instance of MG3 on a Global rack for all local Rackspaces you are using. Don't forget to ask on the Forum as well. There are many GP users there with a lot more experience than I have, plus it might be a Windows issue, and then I am totally lost. jamosapien.com

      @@lofileif Thanks! What I haven't tried, and you suggested it, is to use MG3 in the global rack. What happens when I've tried to use it thus far is that it (gig performer) can't handle MG3s pop-up messages that have to be cleared by clicking "OK". That's a guess, mind you. I'll report back on my luck (or not) with the global rackspace.

    I've heard that software solutions cannot ever meet hardware ones. I'm looking for the BEST midi tracking regardless of price. Is that the Fishman Triple Play or GraphTec Ghost system?

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hardware like fretscanning or any other type of instantanious recognision of where you are positioned pn the neck will of course be faster than any software solution. But it is totally uniteresting if it isn’t also high quality dynamic tracking with great handling of polyphony for instance. There are fretscanning options out there like the Rob O’Reilly guitars, but I havent had a chance to try one so I can’t say much. The fishman triple play has been viewed as the fastest solution for years now, but that is also a pitch-to-midi solution. The software is doing the conversion of six audio streams coming from the hexaphonic pickups in use. Graphtech isn’t reslly doing more than providing a signal out from your guitar, that can be converted into MIDI by some software down the line. The best solution today (I believe) is to use a hexaphonic pickup into the MIDI Guitar 3 MGHEX Tracker. That is the expansion to the standard version developed especially for us that already had guitars with thia particular setup. It is a mix between a hardware and a software maybe, but so is everything.

    • @con-rob
      @con-rob 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @lofileif wasn't even referring to that, but just like the GraphTec Ghost system built into the Carvin NS1 (It can be installed in any other guitar) would give you this ability since they have a Midi version. That's like $300 for the pickup then $100-200 for the install, so like $500 total for perfect immediate tracking to turn any guitar into a midi controller and it handled pitch bends and fast playing without any loss of notes (look up Steve Oliver's demo of the NS1). Also, a midi to USB is cheap/free too. That doesn't seem too pricey to me, so is this software solution more for people who can't afford $500?

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think I described the basics before. These guitars (Carvin and Godin, and some others) have something they call synth acess. That is not to say they are synthguitars. They do NOT send out MIDI. They have hexaphonic/divided pickups that can be used with 13-pin outputs (sometimes referred to as MIDI jacks/outputs). These can be used with pedals with MIDI converting capabilities. But the actual MIDI conversion has nothing to do with these guitars. What I am suggesting is that you can use a guitar with a pickup like this and connect to your computer and use the MIDI Guitar software insted, for the best conversion we have today.

    • @con-rob
      @con-rob 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @lofileif Yeah, I understand that, but the synth to midi box is like 50 bucks and there's no latency. Sorry, I should have said that explicitly. It also retains all six individual strings, hexaphonic format so you can edit them individually in your DAW. That's why I'm asking, why use a software solution when that's available for relatively cheap?

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed! I generally don't get into trouble with the Mac Studio, but I can't even play a third of the instruments on my MBP i9 (which at the time I bought that was a pretty decent computer. Bitwig unfortunately doesn't work with MPE generated from an Audio track yet. As they say themselves:
      "The way MPE works in Bitwig Studio is that MPE from a midi controller gets translated to Bitwig’s per note expressions, and those are being recorded in clips and used to play the internal Bitwig instruments. When playing back recorded notes with note expressions to VSTs, it converts it back to Midi MPE before sending it to the VSTs.
      But if you generate MPE Midi within a device chain and then send it directly to our internal devices, there is no translation to the note expressions and the devices are currently not completely optimised to receive pure MPE Midi date instead of note expressions. This is something we might improve on in the future."
      This is sad since I like the basic setup a lot.
