I appreciate you shining a light on all the original, and many relatively "unknown" versions and ports of the classic MK games. This is just my opinion... but MK has totally lost its way... since MKX, at very least. It's nice to see attention still being paid to what the series USED to be. 43 years old... OG MK fan here, since literally day one in 1992... you just earned yourself a subscriber. Keep up the good work!
So far only few games I knew that had that scaling and rotation are Art of Fighting 1-3, Samurai Shodown 1-5 & maybe 7 (for some reason 6 doesn't had it and 7 seem to have it but almost like it tries not to use it too much), Killer Instinct 1 & 2, and the Street Fighter EX games.
@@VOAN Street Fighter EX is a "real" 3D game (polygonal), the others are 2D fighters with zoom/scaling.Killer Instinct works entirely different, the backgrounds are pre-recorded "movies".

On still images, it looked very good and accurate, just like the arcade original, same with the Saturn port (and this may be the main selling point; people thought this port HAS TO BE arcade perfect after seeing the screenshots), but you will regognize it very soon that it runs, plays and sound sounds way, way worse during gameplay in every possible way. It could've been so much better...
Yes! My friend's brother had an import copy of this, definitely remember playing it the night HBK beat Vader at Summerslam- this playthrough has unlocked memories
Damn... that loading from disc is indeed *everywhere* in this version. 😮 Gotta wonder how much they were struggling in development with data loading and handling when they got the matches (apart from those with character morphs) to go smoothly, but even victory poses needed a slight pause for loading in the animation.
@@MosoKaiser a young, unexperienced and obvioursly unmotivated team made this port. And Acclaim was about to loose the MK license, so they never really tried to create something worthy.
If I had to choose between PS1 or Saturn I would stick to the Saturn port for MK2. Especially since my SAROO HD Loader cart came in the mail so I'm playing the game on an SD card making the loading times much quicker.
to fight smoke. at the portal level, press Down + Start ( at same time) when toasty guy pops out/appears. To fight Jade, only use low kick on opponent before the question mark!
I did not know this was a thing back in the day. Nice video showing it off. From what I remembered, to fight Jade, you have to only use low kick to include the fatality if you want to use one. Using a different button other than low kick for the fatality would not allow the Jade fight. I use Shang Tsung's Kintaro fatality for this.
The scaling works in Samurai Shodown because the full zoomed in are the characters at their "native resolution"... then it zooms out and includes more stage. That works much better. If they would have expanded the stage artwork, they could have done it that way, and there regular size would be the full zoom in. Bro, I really love your outro, it's sick! It would be even more next level if the last frame of the video and the first frame of the artwork matched up!! Awesome work man.

I actually like the zooming in/out effect for some reason. Yet, the never-changing music for fatalities and loading times (if it's why it seems to freeze at specific moments) are just dreadful.
On saturn this effect would have made more sense - as the Saturn version used actual sprites and background layers, unlike the PlayStation that used polygons to fake the 2D
It's the game. There are a lot of unwanted and never corrected side effects. I doubt they had something like a test play/quality check before they threw it on the market...
I never knew about MK2 for PS1, I know it was perfect on Saturn. There are a lot of loading times in this version, but it has quality, we soon notice it
I noticed the design for Wasteland is different from the Arcade. They seem to be farther from Shao Kahn's fortress and the fortress itself does not have the torches lit.

MK3 didnt have these frequent loadings during matches and in between rounds. its like they were experimenting with new memory management techniques with this ver. As for the artful scaling thing, they were trying to mimic the Art of Fighting camera zoom feature
@@Neto808 Reason for that was cause in Japan at the time, Nintendo of Japan doesn't want to see other cultural violence depict in their platform so they change the blood to green and censored all the fatalities. It wasn't until the Cero rating was created that they finally allow violence to be seen in videogames on their platform. MKII for the PlayStation came out when the Cero rating was in place so it gets to keep the violence and fatalities.
I did remove it, it wasn’t a fair representation of the game as my disc was very scratched which is what I believe caused the insane loading times. I will post a play through again IF I can find a better copy 👊🏼

I'm happy there's a option ti turn it on & off. The more options the better. Some people get motion sickness but you can't change the sharking 😂 shaking in some games
The loading times are crap on the PSX, the game's scaling draws my attention, I didn't know that and the music is different, it has other tones, but it lacks a few Bad version if it weren't for its loading times and shortcomings. Graphically it looks great
Are you playing on an emulator or original ps1 japanese copy? I actually own this japanese version ps1, but it is brand new shrink wrapped laying on my dresser. I am collecting it because it is rare and expensive!
lol, even the blood splatters after roundhouse/jump/high kick attacks went in the wrong direction, and backwards walking speed is faster than forwards... Things like that make me think they had the intention to mess this port up pretty bad, in every possible way.

Man i've noticed that any version of MK II i play, i can't perform the stage fatality in the pool screan even making the perfect timing command but in the other stage fatalitys come out. why?
The Dead Pool stage fatality in MKII is similar to the Pit 1 stage fatality in that it doesn't required special input to do it. All you need to do is do an uppercut while holding Low Punch and Low Kick and it'll work. Also of note that in Mortal Kombat Trilogy the Dead Pool stage fatality required the special inputs so it won't work the same as in MKII.
@@BushyStallion Since when? I been playing since the arcades first came out and the whole thing was only kick buttons, no block or punch, in your second win round to do friendships or babalities. Unless it was changed in later versions and we just kept playing with the original rules for it

This game doesn't do the scaling right. It keeps moving as you get closer or farther. I prefer the way games like Art of Fighting and JOJO HOTF do it. Its less distracting in those.

It's the same thing with many Neo Geo fighting games. It looked impressive back then and I somehow understand that they wanted to show off their system's capabilities, but to me and many other ppl it's just distracting and hard on the eyes. The more succesful titles like the KOF, Fatal Fury/Real Bout series had no scaling during gameplay, I think they left it out just because of this reason.
I don't get why you attempt to use Low Kick when fighting at the Portal stage especially when you didn't turn Easy Jade on at the cheat menu, I thought you were going to find Smoke but you didn't. Easy Smoke was the option you turn on. Also the reason why you didn't reach Jade before the "?" was cause you block on both those two rounds against Raiden, you should only touch Low Kick, remember touching any other button aside from Low Kick will disqualify you from facing Jade.
Playing this version makes me sick, too. But not in some positive way. I can't stand the butchered Saturn and PS1 ports, things like the annoying loading times, hickups during gameplay, hitbox issues, wrong walking speed, weird AI behavour and overall incompleteness ruined it for me. But I get it, you just want to try every port, nice video though!

I remember wanting to buy this back in the very late 1999 early 2000's while in highschool from eBay. At the time I remember wanting it because of how good the saturn version looked convinced it was Arcade perfect. (Never actually tried it) just from the game preview in gamepro. And the other game magazines. Now actually watching this. I glad I never bought the PSX import. Very disappointed this was not arcade perfect aside from the Load times. The team could of done a much better job. So glad I found out about MAME, around this time.

The normal condition for fighting Jade is winning the final round of the fight before the "?" using only LK.
Kinda hate the fatality music isn't there it's like ki and eternal champion fatalities without that music it really makes a difference.

Definitely not a mode for me. Just watching the zooming made me a bit nauseous. Defenders of the Earth made me feel like this too.

Saturn, DOS, PSX have the best MK2 ports.

Yeah I get it, with all the versions out there some people just stick to the best and closest versions to the arcade, while I can appreciate all the ports I can also respect when people don’t like them. Thanks for the comment my friend 🙏🏽

I remember wanting to buy this back in the very late 1999 early 2000's while in highschool from eBay. At the time I remember wanting it because of how good the saturn version looked convinced it was Arcade perfect. (Never actually tried it) just from the game preview in gamepro. And the other game magazines.
Now actually watching this. I glad I never bought the PSX import.
Very disappointed this was not arcade perfect aside from the Load times. The team could of done a much better job. So glad I found out about MAME, around this time.

I know it's no MIDI, but it really sounds like. The quality reminds me on some PC games from the early 90s, with Sound Blaster sound card.

There’s another 2 or 3 BushyStallion accounts on Arcade1up, I guess people felt the need to copy for some reason so I can’t guarantee that it’ll be me that you face, HOWEVER.. I can always record a set if you want and showcase it on the channel so you can see if and when we do actually battle lol
