I owned the 39mm and I've recently seen the 40mm in person. Sounds stupid, but the AR coating is a game changer. The dial looks much more crisp. This plus the improved movement and the slightly more proportionate case (which was already great in the 39 mm) make it the winning pick - for me!
I loved my 39mm but the dial was always a bit "foggy" / greyed by the crystal reflex... the AR coating is an ingenious advancement, a marvelous technology leap forward... jokes aside, it's fairly difficult to show on camera but when you see the 40 mm in the metal, you'll notice the radical difference. The sad aspect is that Rolex could have thought about this a few years ago... pretty lame for a multi-billion biz!
It’s the one I’m opting for. I have an OP41 and SubDate and I much prefer the 40mm to the 36 for size and the sunburst dial and updated movement in the 224279/40mm vs the 39mm
Talking about the classic size for the Explorer being 36: the OP used to be 34mm, so there's that. The changes were probably made to make the Explorer more accessible to women. Slimmer bracelet and 35.5mm case - and a two tone option. The 40mm is now in line with Professional models such as the AirKing and Milgauss.

What are the lug-to-lug distances on the two Explorers? And what are the distances "from the tip of the end link to the tip of the end link? Please, which watch is longer on the wrist? Which one would you recommend for a 6,5 inch wrist? Nice video, have been waiting for a comparison like that :)
Dear Peppe, i hate measurements as sometimes can be deceiving specially if you dont see the watches, i have seen 36mm watches that wear like 40mm and 40mm that wear like 36mm LOL. Anyway the 40 mm Explorer has a Lug to lug of 46mm. which is restrain, while the male end links go up to 51,4mm this is important and will on a small writst make the watches bigger. The strap actually increases size from the lug to lug position to 21mm and not 20. The old reference 39mm on the other hand has a47,4 lug to lug making it look longer, yet the male end link to male is 49mm. almost 2 less mm. this has a weird effect makes the watch more ellongated yet sits better on an smaller wrist. the strap is 19,2 hence smaller than lug size... this makes the over experience more delicate on the wrist. End point i would recomend the 39mm for smaller wrists but this reference is second hand for sure. The 40 mm sits better and wider, i would recomen for medium to bigh wrists, Still if you like that type of wear , go for it. i preffer it as has that more tool watch feel , yet i have a bigger wrist too. hope this helps

This 40mm new Explorer is perfect for you@@christopher2818 it will not feel small at all, go for it. of course best thing you can do is to a local retailer and try it

Space for both yes, although if you own one of them i would prioritize another rolex like submariner rather than having both immediatly
The 40mm size (with all Rolex watches)… take the measurement at the edge of the bezel. You’ll get 40mm spot on. On my 36 which is 35.7 at the case. It’s 36mm at the bezel. This 40mm looks huge because of the 21/22mm lug width. Rolex is starting to make different size lug sizes because they don’t want people mixing and matching bracelets like before. It’s less cost effective to chance sizing on a bracelet than to machining the case to fit one specific bracelet size.
That’s largely speculation around what motivates Rolex to go up a mil in their bracelets. But I’ll tell you, the 41 bracelet feels superior. I have both a 36 and 41 mm OP and I much prefer the 41’s bracelet and clasp.
39 is definitely the better looking watch out of the two. Better proportions and better dial. Not sure I understand why you keep saying that the 40 is more of a tool watch. If anything, the matte dial of the 39 gives it a much more tool watch aesthetic. 214270 is hands down the best Explorer Rolex has made. The only real upgrade on the 40 is the movement which offers the longer power reserve, that’s it.
What i say is what i think, specially in a chat/video with no scripts. Actually i dont see that much of shiny dial on the 40 and to me the size pf both is perfect but 40 gives me the feeling in hand of a better wearing tool watch between big dial and how bracrlrt sit

If I'm going to spend that much though I think I would go with the Air King for the sake of something really unique for Rolex which also isn't too flashy. I must be old-fashioned but I'd love an Explorer or Air King with twelve Arabic numerals. This isn't popular at all among watchmakers beyond the cheap stuff.

Wow its difficult to say but what i can tell you is this watch is NOT among the most bought Rolexes and in 2021 you could easily still enter a shop and find one if you asked nicely on the safe. In fact i was invited to AD to view the new releases in preview, and they asked me if i wanted one and which i choose the explorer as i knew also i less requested and in fact first watch that arrived was mine. Time is relative to the person, this ones arrive hence my advice is not to wait iddle and visit them every month to remind them your interest, talk to them and leave and maybe within 3 months next one is yours

That is an excellent poin and i forgot totaly to mention the AR coating! the 40mm is the better 39mm watch! IMO

the 40mm doesn't look huge at all, i guess unless you have a below 15cm wrist.
