I have to agree with you entirely. I’ve worn mine every day because for me I want to enjoy it rather than hiding it away to keep it “new”. Why? I’m not planning on selling it. I bought it as a gift to myself for overcoming all my life’s challenges and wore it on my wedding day. Whatever happens to it while I wear it daily is part of its story. We all grow old, picking up scars and wrinkles along the way. With size, I am a bit of a stickler for a watch respecting its past, but I’m also hypocritically a fan of moving forward.
i totally understand the mindset. I've had many 'stuff' i've hiden away and looked after, which is really no good to anyone when unused, but now, in a peverse way i get enjoyment from the use, and if whatever gets worn out, scratched or used to death, means i've gotten value. what i've never liked or really been able to do is just buy something when the old model is still serviceable, makes me feel like im wasting my money.
Nice one Stuart. I’ve always admired the Explorer for its simplicity. I have owned a white faced ExplorerII now for 27 years and still get huge amounts of enjoyment wearing it and has never left my wrist.
Congratulations Stuart on your fine, fine timepiece. I consider the Explorer to be one of those watches that suit every single occasion and which one can never tire of. Perfect.
I've had GMT Master 2 LN, Skydweller blue face and now this 40mm explorer... This fits just perfect on my wrist.. I sold the GMT and never use the skydweller. This is a watch I can't stop wearing. Not flashy but still noticed, perfect fit to my small wrist. Fits to everything!
i have the 36mm 124270 and I love it. I totally get where you're coming from. It's a dream you need to experience whether 36 or 40mm. Classic, elegant and timeless.
I love my 36mm Explorer (Ref 124270). It is on the small side by modern standards but it works well with any attire. I’ve toyed with the idea of the 40mm version, which is what led me to your channel, but the common ground here is that for anyone sceptics out there, this is a beautiful, understated daily wearer. Probably the most versatile watch in the Rolex range. Those that know, know.
I found your channel by searching for "Rolex Explorer," and I want to compliment you on your videography and editing of this video. It's very nicely done! You've got a real knack there. Congratulations on your Explorer and keep wearing it!
I’m in my 50’s now and like yourself I saw an ad for the Rolex submariner many years ago in a magazine and thought “one day” to myself .. that said as much as I can appreciate the sub as I’ve gotten older I’ve come away from the blingy brash look of the sub.. and fell upon admiring the less in your face explorer for its all brushed bracelet and tooly vibe , and I’ve wondered would this fit my lifestyle better moving forward. So as a result I’ve put my name down for one at my AD… I also have the speed master which was my other childhood grail watch .. what do you reckon?
I managed to get a 224270 from my local AD (with only a two week wait) to celebrate an upcoming birthday. It’s been sat in the box waiting for that day…can’t wait to enjoy it. Cheers!
Close to how i saved my 1.5 years first job salary just after college to buy my GT 650 , and got it this January 😎😂. Beautiful watch Stu , love the content and the review. P.s Congratulations for the silver button and wish you, for many more to come
I love the simplicity of the watch, and totally agree with you, that’s what makes it perfect. I wear an older style Tag Heuer Link l (which I love), and am a little horrified at what they look like now. Wish I could afford an Explorer, because yours, the 40mm, is very nice indeed.
Thanks for the review sold my black bay Harrods last year couldn’t get along with the snow flake hour hand, been on a waiting list at my local AD for a 40mm Explorer since December, like you I’m at the stage of life where I’m no longer interested in trying to impress other people, looking for a watch just for me which will fly under the radar & can pass to my son when I’m gone 👍
My favourite watch is my 70’s Poljot Amphibian. Polished SS case and acrylic dome glass. When it scratches up I polish it up with a little toothpaste whilst I’m on the throne. It’s cooler than any bond watch and was made in the now gone cccp. Ironically I have it on a nato strap.
It’s funny, I’ve got the call three times now, last one only yesterday from watches of Switzerland. I’m still in no rush to get it, maybe because I still love wearing my IWC MKXX. I tried the Explorer 40 on and on my 7” wrist, it’s absolutely perfect. I can see myself getting one in the future, just not yet. It looks good on you.
I was going to buy a Rolex many years ago. I mentioned it to our group accountant who it turned out collected and refurbished watches as a hobby. He didn’t so much talk me out of it, rather he suggested there were other high quality Swiss watches that would also be a wise consideration bearing in mind the prices of these watches. I took his advice and bought a less known brand on his recommendation. While I still like the Rolex (who wouldn’t) I have been delighted with the one I bought. So much so that I bought another two over the next ten years. Maintenance costs are expensive as they go back to the manufacturer, but I know how you feel about a good quality watch. I have the added benefit of not having to explain to people why I bought it.
@@jjnewman65 All three are Oris. Two complications and a date and time. The last one is the most basic, but the one I wear most as it was bought in remembrance of a family member. None of them cost five figures. Our accounts director was a sharp cookie.
Beautiful watch Stu, so simple and yet so elegant in my opinion. I was going to purchase the 39mm version just before it was discontinued in favour of the smaller 36mm. Eventually decided to purchase a 40mm Air King as I really like the dial format. I also have a Rolex Datejust bi-metal (Ref: 126333) with the Wimbledon dial and jubilee bracelet. Problem is that I very rarely wear them as I am frightened to get them scratched or marked. From the images of your watch it is obvious from the very light scratch marks is that you wear and ENJOY your watch. That’s something that I can’t say I do at the moment, which is a bit of a shame if you ask me.
I'm exactly the same as you.... I have the 40mm Explorer and hardly wear it for the same reason. Feel a big scratch would destroy me.... But hate that I'm not enjoying the watch I brought.
As a chap who has a small collection of watches (nothing expensive) I was hoping you would do a review of this watch as a follow-up. Personally I'm not keen on flashy/bling watches so I think the choice you made is very stylish and classic as you said, a bit like your motorbikes. I hope you have many years of enjoyment of your timepiece 🙂🚴
Yeah, I’m right there with you, mate. I have a nice 6 piece collection and when the 40mm Explorer was released, I knew I had to have it someday. I’ve always loved the design, but the size just wasn’t right, until now. I’ve begun saving and look forward to owning it. Great video. 😎👍🏼
It’s a special thing to realize one of your dreams. That is a fine watch. What a beautifully well-made piece of machinery. I probably wouldn’t want to take it off either. Couldn’t help to think though, it sounded like you were about to call it your precious. OK OK you caught me, I’m a helpless Lord of the Rings nerd lol. Again, great watch and congratulations, definitely well earned.

Stu, as a watch officiinado (as passionate as for bikes, youngtimer and classic cars, cigar smoking, and so many more other things), I'd love a tour of your complete watch collection!
You hit the nail on the head when you said "There's something about a Rolex no other watches have". I have been lucky enough to have had a Rolex for a very long time, over half a century. It has just a plain face with a second hand, no numbers, no date, no fancy gizmos. Just a basic watch but it's gone rock climbing, fell running, ocean and open water swimming, motorcycling, ATV racing, working on cars and bikes and general DIY, and a number of other not very gentile sports and it is still going strong and is none the worse for wear. Though I have had to replace both the crystal and the strap once. A testament to it's quality. Oh, and it's travelled, on my wrist, about 1.5 million miles in various aircraft.
I had a 2008 Rolex Explorer (36mm) which was a nice watch, but sold it due to it not being worn ... I felt a potential target in urban areas or when travelling, and undesirables seemed to pick up on it quickly. Probably true of any watch with the Rolex crown, or any high end watch (window shopping in Capri recently, wasn't tempted by the Rolex, Patek, Panerai, Hublot, Audemeres, or other watches on sale in the dedicated boutiques there). The proceeds from the Explorer, over time. bought several vintage Omega ... the serendipity involved in the acquisition of these (all in top condition) and their variety in design (18kt day date auto, to windup, to diver) lends each to suit various attire and occasions. I think its almost time to keep one and pass the rest to my nephews ... we are mere custodians of such objects, which I think are best used and appreciated by others (though a collection is nice in itself, its not really the purpose of such watches).
Great perspective on the 36mm size debate. Not only are people larger but also small watches have not just been out of fashion …but out of style for 40 years. Men also don’t wear fedora hats either
That's a beautiful piece of engineering Stuart. I haven't worn a watch since I retired from the job many years ago but after my partner bought a Ladies Yachtmaster on a trip to Switzerland I do have a hankering for a Submariner. The trouble is I could buy another motorcycle for the same money!
Very agree with your opinion about size. Before I had 36mm explorer. My arm is 7inch, I found It too small even after I'm watching review that said 36mm is classic i'm still not happy and sell it. Now I plan to buy 40mm for Myself.
Thank you very much for the sharing. This is the best review I've ever come across on the Rolex Explorer. I have a Date Sub, this will be definitely my next Rolex. Best Regards.
Lovely watch, I would love one of the 36mm versions but I do not want another auto watch. So I guess I will be happily sticking with my Addiesdive AD2023-1 although I do hope they do an applied indices version sometime soon.
Excellent video Stuart. I was able to buy the same watch earlier this year in memory of my late mother and i bought it for the same reason it's very discreet.
Uncle stu, Thanks for the video (another good one as always). The Explorer is a beautiful example of understated class. You either get it, or you don't. I wear a very old Submariner (inherited) and I recently had the need for a service of the thing. Whilst in the Rolex dealership organising said service, I enquired as to the purchase of new Rolex models, specifically the waiting list/time. I was told; Submariner: 3 years. Yachtmaster: 7 years and Explorer, don't even bother asking! Hahaha. I think you're onto a winner. Both in terms of enjoyment of use (most important) and potential investment. My best wishes Justin
Great, honest video...i have 1016, bought new in 1990 (and worn literally everyday) so I do get the "connection" you build with these watches...being on the smaller size 5'8', the 36mm fits me perfect ...these watches are meant to be worn, and worn everyday and everywhere and this is where relative size matters...you could probably pull off wearing a DeepSea but working on your bikes you would bang it even more and get it caught in those tight spaces...Of all the Rolexes, the Explorer is the most versatile...yes a Submariner can be worn with a suit and a Gold DayDate can be worn swimming but neither do both jobs as well as the Explorer...It is also a watch that is just that! a Watch...its not meant to be a flashy piece of jewellery..it is meant to tell time, do it reliably, accurately and be there on your wrist whenever you need it! i lead an active life and the Explorer is always along for the ride...mine has an acrylic crystal so it gives me a little more comfort that it will pull through undamaged. Wear yours well!!
I bought an Explorer 39mm 7 months ago and I also have a watch collection, however my Explorer has never left my wrist since I first put it on. I’m irritated by the time and money I spent on my collection when all I ever wanted was an Explorer. I can’t explain it, I love it and will never part with it. 👍🏻
Nice watch,i have an airking 34mm and for me she is great, very discret and so simple, but i will appreciate a 40mm because my eyes are not so good and sometime 34 or 36mm become to be to litttle for see well the time,so 40mm is not too big for me,
Great video and it’s good to see you in this new format. The only Rolex I’ve ever owned was from a “Lucky lucky” Man in Spain as a child! Thought I’d hit the jackpot at 200 pesetas!! 😂 What a plonker I was… 1 Day I will be able to own a Rolex (I hope anyway) Love every video and please keep up the amazing content. 👊
Excellent. I totally DO agree. Nobody needs more. One hand for hours, one for minutes. A last one for seconds. No date. Black dial. All steel. And that's all! Saint Exupéry wrote: "Il semble que la perfection soit atteinte non quand il n’y a plus rien à ajouter, mais quand il n’y a plus rien à retrancher." (“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”) But Stuart.... How many Royal Enfield do you buy with the money of a Rolex today? 😅🤭😉
Good morning Stu. Late to the party again. Another good video. Not into watches , I’m afraid but I can appreciate this Rolex watch’s simple stylish design. It’s probably the one I’d go for too.
I love your video style, very natural as though we were having a conversation, not like many videos where it is as though the host is speaking to a bunch of short attention span ADD folks
40 mm is reputed to be the sweet spot for a modern watch so the 40 mm Explorer at just under 39mm fits in quite nicely even on my skinny 6.75 inch wrists there is no lug over hang and as I am in my sixties, I should be able to make the time out on its super legible dial in my eighties if I get any time that is.
Interesting. I thought 38mm was my sweet spot and have a 38mm Aqua Terra and a 39.5mm Planet Ocean. I tried on the 36mm and 40mm Explorer last year before choosing the 36mm. I felt it suited my 6.2” wrist better. I find I just get used to any of my watch sizes after a day wearing it.
Stuart, the middle ages were much longer than 50 years ago and they didn't have wristwatches back then. Jokes aside, I do agree it's not a trend. Trends are temporary while I don't think watch sizes will ever go back to what they were. What I think caused the shift was the advent of mobile phones, which meant that you no longer needed a watch to tell the time. That meant watches became purely luxury items, and luxury items are meant to be seen so they were made bigger. That also meant more quality (and money) could be put into the watch without needing a loupe to admire them.
When you first meet someone you subconsciously look them up and down to get some idea of their character. I am aware that I look at the timepiece on their wrist too. If they are parading an Apple iwatch they are often the kind of person who also marches up a typical high street on their way to work holding their Costa Coffee out in front of them like some sort of trophy. Shallow types who actually don't impress anyone of any worth, only those like themselves. A quality gentleman's watch, such as this one here, oozes class and therefore reflects upon the character of the man wearing it I think.
Or maybe most people don’t care so much about watch as much as you do and they are actually not trying to impress anyone. Talking about being shallow and snobbish lol
I have an Apple watch and love it. I like the tech, I like being able to use it to buy stuff even if I haven’t got my phone with me. BTW I too have often wondered why some folk hold their Costa Coffees in the street in such an ostentatious manner. I’ve never bought a coffee to drink in the street, I recall that eating and drinking in the street was expressly forbidden in my school’s rule book as it was considered bad manners to do so; a fact I remind my 10 year old twin daughters of frequently, to no avail I might add! I do like Stuart’s Rolex though, unlike some of ‘em it’s reasonably understated. And, come on, surely we all know that one shouldn’t judge a book by its cover?
A watch is about how it makes you feel regardless of model. That’s the pleasure of owning a Rolex time piece. You appreciate the finish quality. I wear and enjoy mine most of the time , daily drivers. Maybe not whilst working on bike. lol. Don’t get it polished Stuart let it age graciously. Every scratch tells a story.
I have only ever traded one watch away, it was the Explorer 1 in 36mm, my biggest watch regret to this day. Had I known how much I would regret it I would have just bought what I traded it for and kept the Explorer.
As a fan of fine watches over the years.... I always wanted a Rolex.... Back 2019 I got one from a fellow as I got off the tour bus in China...$6.00.... ran for 2 years.... A couple years ago while in Vienna bought a Tissot.. a fine time piece. I've purchased other watches from my local jeweler store. But the Rolex was out of my means. Then one day I visited, and they had an estate sale Rolex. It was now or never. So, I baked my credit card.... a new Royal Enfield 650 would have been cheaper.... For some reason... the Rolex.. feels.... different from my other time pieces.... perhaps it's just a mental thing. Next.... Omega 😎
do you wear it while riding? Do you worry the vibrations will damage it? i got the call for it yesterday. Gotta get back to them, took a year of waiting.
@@stuartfillingham cheers, i gotta travel to get mine. if i may ask. what is the circumference of your wrist ? I may need to get a link. I'm about 7.5"
Watches are made to be worn and bikes must be ridden! Like your personal shares on the channel. PS.... my everydays are: 2023 Guzzi V7 Stone Special Edition, 2020 T120 Bud Ekins, a Seiko and an Oris.... Doubt I'll ever have a Rolex! Cheers!
Thanks for the longer term review. I picked up an Explorer II 226570 black dial just days after the 40mm Explorer was announced. I might have considered that if it had been out longer, but I was not about to pass up being offered another watch I really wanted (after a 5 month wait). I have since tried on an exhibition model 40mm Explorer and quite liked it. I liked the old 39mm sizing too. The 36 never felt right to me, but I'm not a small person. You're spot on about people getting bigger since the original Explorer came out (in multiple dimensions). I would love to see wrist size data going back that far, but I doubt that information exists.
Seems there is a worrying trend in London. Young girls ask you for the time and if thy spot a high end watch on your wrist they point you out to their partner who then tries to steal it from you somewhere down the line. Best to stay aware.
Excellent reference! Wear it daily and one appreciates it even more. It’s like a baseball mitt or a leather jacket where it gets better with patina.
That won’t patina.
I keep coming back to what you said about polished surfaces being *more* toolish, not less. It’s really true. Such a good point.
I have to agree with you entirely. I’ve worn mine every day because for me I want to enjoy it rather than hiding it away to keep it “new”. Why? I’m not planning on selling it.
Uncle stu,
Thanks for the video (another good one as always).
My best wishes
Justin
Can relate to everything you are saying … after my wife took my 36, I got the 40
I bought an Explorer 39mm 7 months ago and I also have a watch collection, however my Explorer has never left my wrist since I first put it on. I’m irritated by the time and money I spent on my collection when all I ever wanted was an Explorer. I can’t explain it, I love it and will never part with it. 👍🏻
I just bought mine from the AD and this is exactly why I bought it
A very interesting video Stu on a subtle, simple but classy watch 👍🏻 carry on that man Caio for now tat ta 😊
Nice watch,i have an airking 34mm and for me she is great, very discret and so simple, but i will appreciate a 40mm because my eyes are not so good and sometime 34 or 36mm become to be to litttle for see well the time,so 40mm is not too big for me,
Breathtaking intro!
Although mine's an Explorer II, I've always had a soft spot for the 39mm Explorer since it was released.
Great video and it’s good to see you in this new format. The only Rolex I’ve ever owned was from a “Lucky lucky” Man in Spain as a child! Thought I’d hit the jackpot at 200 pesetas!! 😂 What a plonker I was…
1 Day I will be able to own a Rolex (I hope anyway)
Love every video and please keep up the amazing content. 👊
I'd be so unlucky I'd scratch my watch working on the bike, lovely looking watch, just for curiosity Stewart, which channels do you follow?
Excellent. I totally DO agree. Nobody needs more. One hand for hours, one for minutes. A last one for seconds. No date. Black dial. All steel. And that's all! Saint Exupéry wrote: "Il semble que la perfection soit atteinte non quand il n’y a plus rien à ajouter, mais quand il n’y a plus rien à retrancher." (“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”)
But Stuart.... How many Royal Enfield do you buy with the money of a Rolex today? 😅🤭😉
Lovely watch Stuart, but I am also liking that jacket! Is it a Barbour, and what model please? 😊
its the barbour Bidlam utility overshirt. sizes do run large on this im normally an xl in barbour jackets but this is a large and still feels roomy!
Ta v much
Good morning Stu. Late to the party again. Another good video. Not into watches , I’m afraid but I can appreciate this Rolex watch’s simple stylish design. It’s probably the one I’d go for too.
The crown 👑 is always king it’s that simple
That is a stunning watch. Simplicity is more. My personal timepiece is a CWC pocket watch.
I love your video style, very natural as though we were having a conversation, not like many videos where it is as though the host is speaking to a bunch of short attention span ADD folks
I went with a Sub Date. Love the thing to bits.
I prefer your Longines. Although I must admit that’s first rolex which looks ok. I don’t like those with magnification on date..
Hi, nice review& channel. What watch you wore at the start of this video? Regards, Janez
Hamilton Khaki field king.
Looks great on you Stuart!
I’ve ordered one of those they are gorgeous
Next.... Omega 😎
Exactly! I have a Triump T120 that I have a similar experience with. Lol.... It is a heavy burden to carry...
do you wear it while riding? Do you worry the vibrations will damage it? i got the call for it yesterday. Gotta get back to them, took a year of waiting.
vibrations are no problem when riding. they are designed to cope with it.
@@stuartfillingham cheers, i gotta travel to get mine. if i may ask. what is the circumference of your wrist ? I may need to get a link. I'm about 7.5"
I really like the explorer 40 , a great all rounder . I love my watches too , what else is in your collection?
Watches are made to be worn and bikes must be ridden!
Like your personal shares on the channel.
PS.... my everydays are: 2023 Guzzi V7 Stone Special Edition, 2020 T120 Bud Ekins, a Seiko and an Oris....
Doubt I'll ever have a Rolex!
Cheers!
My left ear really enjoyed this
Plain and simple is Best in watches and menswear. Right choice IMHO
Thank you an excellent review 👍
Simple class .. no doubt about that!
Great review!
Nice review! What’s your wrist size?
8.5 inches
Excellent review
It’s a beauty
enjoy mate. good one
I would love to see wrist size data going back that far, but I doubt that information exists.
such a beautiful cat ❤❤❤❤
Fancy an Oris Aquis myself.
Seems there is a worrying trend in London. Young girls ask you for the time and if thy spot a high end watch on your wrist they point you out to their partner who then tries to steal it from you somewhere down the line. Best to stay aware.
Thats been a "trend" for at least 30 years
Now I know why I'm so short. I was supposed to be born in a castle.
Nice review, ok I now want a manual watch
36mm is small, may be too small.
40mm is big, may be too big.
I have the 36mm, and it's the only watch for me.
The 36mm is nearer 35mm.
The 40mm is nearer 38mm.
The dainty 36mm is for the wife.
@@liquid_metal both of us can wear the watch :)
@@g43654 true. I've got a 6.5" but very flat wrist so picked up the 40mm last week.
Either size is beautiful, but that 36mm just felt too dainty.
