My nephews 2013 Corolla had the same code. Talked to my neighbor, who is a Toyota tech, and he said he has tried replacing the shift solenoid and doing a flush in the past, but the problem came back. I told him I would try a flush. I just dropped the pan and noticed about 7 small pieces of metal stuck on the magnet. They look like small pieces of a gear. I'm sure it needs a transmission. Toyota built crappy torque converters as well, so it might be from it. I'm putting everything back together so he can at least drive it back home. Update. My nephew had a shop order a used transmission, and it's been working solid. It's been about 10 months now.
Never power flush. Drain, fill, replace the filter, then drain and fill every 30 k thereafter, these transmissions are excellent though they like fluid that has not been contaminated.
Go OEM parts, filter, O ring and gasket for a few more $'s, a dab of silicone gasket maker just to hold the gasket. That silicone on the inside of the pan perimeter will fall into the pan and system.
Nice lecture but my question is what is the relationship between shift solenoid 'A' with 3rd & 4th gear not engaging. What if it was the solenoid 'B' that had issue; which of the gears wud ve have been affected.
I have on 2013 Matrix which is the same as Corolla 1.8L sometime in cold weather the 3rd gear not engaging for certain time it finally shift but delayed about 30 seconds. No codes. What could it be?

Very Possible , you will need to start looking into it further. pull the Solenoid out and might be worth replacing. or if you have a good scanner to test the Solenoid . also you might be able to test the Solenoid using a multimeter. Good luck
@@autorepairchamps thanks. I'm at 88,000 miles, owned since 39,000 so I don't believe the transmission fluid has ever been touched. I'm going to start there, doing a drain and fill at least twice before changing the filter and see if it has any effect.
