Bird was a complete player. Deadly shooter, terrific passer, strategic rebounder and all-around court sense genius. Made his teammates better. Totally spoke his mind because he had such great focus on and off the court. The fact that his super-heated rivals had such great stories and things to say about him bear out the greatness of his character, too.

His rivalry with Magic turned the NBA into the money making paradise we see today. Just because you didn't witness his greatness don't mean it isn't there. The kids today need to watch the games between prime Bird & Magic.. Every aspect of their battles were the apex of competition in Basketball..
Jordan might be on top, but no RIVALRY has ever been as INTENSE as that if Bird and Magic. They made each season interesting and every series they faced off were awe inspiring.

The story that Isiah tells about Kent Benson has deeper roots than just the fact that Benson couldn't guard Larry. When Larry was a freshman at Indiana for the brief time he was there, Kent Benson was over bearing and a total a-hole to Larry and Larry never forgot. Bird relished wearing Kent Benson out and letting him know about it when he had the the opportunity. 💪

I remember when there were a couple of NBA pre season games in Mumbai, India in 2019. The place went nuts when Larry Bird was introduced. Nobody gave a damn about the Bollywood actress who had come to promote herself there.

With so many great players it is difficult to pick any one player and give them a "goat" label. To appreciate Bird's total game please see any of the passing highlights as Bird threw passes between players legs and could thread the needle thru very small windows. Bird was ambidextrous so he could pass and shoot with either hand and he used this skill to confuse the other team. Early in his career he was on 3 all defense teams ( 2nd team) and led the league in defensive win shares 4 times and was 7 times in the top 5! As a rookie he was the main reason for Boston to go from a 29 win team to a 61 win team = the biggest single season turnaround in the NBA at that time. He won ROY and was 4th in MVP voting. For the next 8 years for the MVP Bird was 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st , 3rd and then 2nd. In his first 9 seasons in games Bird played his Celtics won 534 games and lost 177 games for a win % of 75.1% Bird created the 50-40-90 club and did it for 2 seasons ( 87 and 88) and his 29.9 points per game was the highest until Curry topped it. When looking at other "goat" players, no other player has been a 50-40-90 shooter. And Bird in 85 and 86 just missed the 90% FT. SO I took his numbers for all 4 consecutive seasons and Bird actually averaged a 50-40-90 over 4 seasons. He was 3384 of 6534 shots = 51.79% and 3 pointers = 325 of 784 = 41.45% and FT = 1670 of 1854 = 90.07% and his per game for these 4 years was 28.1 points and 9.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists. Bird was the best all around player we have ever seen!!

For a long long long time I was so angry at Isaiah Thomas because of the CRAP he said about Magic and about Larry and his Feud with Michael Jordan that everybody tries to downplay but was evidently there...BUT in the last five to seven years every time he has been on interviews he has been so gracious and it's just great to see him smile and tell these great basketball stories and I have regained a level of respect for Isaiah Thomas

These great Celtic teams and other great teams of the 80s would absolutely dominate in today's "no touch" NBA. If you get a chance, search TH-cam for Isiah Thomas describing the Bird steal. Excellent.

I think Dee Brown was talking about another game because Dee wasn’t on the team until 1990. The play they showed was prior to 1990. You can tell by the hair cut lol I think he did it in another game against Portland but it was to tie the game and he leaned in like he said and still made it.

Yeah that game was in 92 his last season when his back was basically done. All he did was end up with a 50 point triple double.

I had Durant over Bird but the way KD is playings vs the Celtics in 2022 playoffs he's making me change that decision again. Bird would never play like KD did trough the first 3 games. Not agressive,not focused,bad decision making,bad energy etc. I can't imagine Bird in his prime having a seires like that.
