    I just got one too a couple of weeks ago. I took out the two outside screws on the grate in the hopper and left the front two in. Now I can use the front two like a hinge and swing the grate out of the way giving me much better access to the hopper and much easier to change pellets and get out excess dust. Pork belly bacon is almost done so I'll just say, smoke on my friend and enjoy.

    I have the same grill and I have a couple thoughts. First, if you'll run the temp up to 475, you'll have better luck cleaning the grates. 200 simply isn't hot enough to kill the bad things that grow on a grill when you're not using it. Second, if you'll look on the lefthand side by the hopper, you'll see a little hole. That's for your probe wires. I saw you had them in the back. That works if you've got the wire for it, but the one in the front makes it easier.

    • @paulsq_
      @paulsq_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your comment John. I clean the grill after every cook. When I pull everything off the grates that when I turn it up to high and scrape it off after 15 minutes or so of burning on high. I just scrape the grill quick before I cook also. I use the grill almost everyday so there’s no time for stuff to grow on the grates. I know the probe hole is on the left side by the hopper. I do use it when I’m using one probe. I just let the second one hang under the door if I’m using two as the ThermoWorks probes are too thick to fit through the hole together. I’ve been thinking of making the hole bigger and adding a WSM rubber grommet for the probes. Thanks again for your comment and the info you’ve given.

    I like how you fed your temp probes through the back, instead of under the door.

    • @paulsq_
      @paulsq_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tom! I’ve since added a smoke stack to the grill so now I run them under the door cause I sealed up the holes in the back. If I was planning on just dedicating a probe to this grill then I would rig something different over one of the hole to accommodate the probe wire.

    • @paulsq_
      @paulsq_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I might have forgot to mention the grill does have a hole on the side of the cooking chamber for probes but it depends on what type of thermometer you have if it’ll fit more then one. I know I can’t fit more then one of the ThermoWorks probes through it at once

    Very nice. The lawnmower really muted your voice. Nevertheless, you were very informative. Im presently shopping for a new pellet grill. My old Traeger finalky bit the dust and I am hesitent to pay them top dollar for another one. Pit Boss looks like a great replacement at a price point I can handle easily.
    Have you ever had problems with a stuck auger, I discovered it's a bad habit to leave a grill full of pellets out to the winter elements. Here in Oregon we have lot of moisture in the air in Winter and the pellets can bloat from ammbient moisture and jam the auger, which mens you have to take the assembly apart to clean it out. Best to keep the grill out of the elements in Winter. Hard lesson I learned.

    Thank you. I was a little confused after initial priming and burn off. You took care of that. Plus I didn't know the pellets could be changed out. I always had electric smoker. I see with this one you don't get constant smoke.

      I have this same one. I modified it myself, added a smoke stack plus an extra part for more pellets with a fan to blow more smoke in. Also have a smoke stick(highly recommend no matter what smoker you use) for additional smoke. Definitely a good starter smoker, but I ended up having to upgrade.

    Great grill!! FYI - do not use foil to catch grease!!! When I did it caused a fairly large fire from the drippings,ruined the paint (bubbled up), and it also causes the heat to back up into the hopper, and almost caught the pellets on fire in the hopper.. yikes!!! :/ they smoldered, so no disaster, but if they catch and you are forced to douse the fire, you'll ruin your grill. I got lucky this time, so word to the wise: don't use foil to catch the drippings!!!!

    • @paulsq_
      @paulsq_  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Kellen! These grills are great. I’m sorry to hear about the mishap you had. I don’t use the foil to catch the grease I simply run it over the deflector plate and follow the same shape so the grease runs across it and goes to the grease bucket. I’ve been doing this for over a year now and haven’t had any issues with this method. Maybe you didn’t line the deflector plate correctly and had the grease buildup causing a fire.

    • @jamesonkeller8339
      @jamesonkeller8339 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@paulsq_ ahhhh. That's probably where I went wrong! I didn't make sure to press it against the drip plate.
      So others... Learn from my mistake, and follow Paul's method to make sure the grease follows the curve, press the foil down against the drip plate, and drips down to the channels and bucket.
      Next time I'll make sure to be diligent about this!

    Hey don’t know if you will do this but I have the same grill and on the hopper on the left side where the screws that hold the grate in on the top I took those out put small threaded bar that runs from one side to the others through the holes and notched the threads out of the grate so all I have to do is tip it up and I can reach in to scoop the pellets out

We have only used ours four times. Two of the four times when I started it up the temperature kept rising to over 500°. So I had to shut it down and start all over and then it would work. What could I be doing wrong

    • @paulsq_
      @paulsq_  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anita, I’m not sure what happened with your grill. Maybe you just heard the fan running and the auger wasn’t working to feed the pellets to the fire pot. Or maybe you had a flameout and didn’t realize it, everything will still be working at that point except no flame burning the pellets thus leaving the fire pot full of pellets. If that’s what happened clean out the pellets before trying to restart the grill as all those pellets will create a good combustion that will throw out a huge flame. I know this happens from experiencing it myself with my grill and learned from my mistake. Hope this helps you out in some way

    • @paulsq_

      Hey Edward, the main grill grates measure from left to right 24.5” and front to back 19.5” giving you a total of 477.75 sq inches of cooking space. The upper grate/rack makes up the rest to equal 700” sq inches total cooking space/area. I do believe on the smaller grill it’s only 456” sq inches of cooking space total, and it has a much smaller hopper on it. Hope this helps you out in making a decision.

      Hey Terry! It sounds to me like you might have a defective grill. I don’t have any issues like your saying and I know there is no timer on these grills. Basically you should be able to start the grill on the smoke setting and once it fires up fully set it to whatever temperature you desire and it’ll run on it till you shut the grill off or lose power or run out of pellets. I’m not even sure where to begin troubleshooting with it as I don’t have the grill in my possession to see what exactly is happening and go from there.

      Thanks for the kind words. Usually if I’m smoking ribs or brisket I’ll just leave the grill on the smoke setting for 2-3 hours. If I wanted to grill some chicken breasts for example I would just start the grill up and once it fires set it to the desired cooking temp maybe 250-300 and you’ll get hardly no smoke taste. You’ll still get a hint of it but you’ll smell the smoke more then you’ll taste it if anything. If you’re cooking at a higher temp you’ll get even less to none at all. Hope this helps you out. Hey MrEricturney! Thanks I am honoured you’re enjoying my videos and that they are helpful to you. It’s ok you don’t have the space for multiple grills not a worry. Having multiple grills is nice but you’re not gonna use them all as much as you would think. I would definitely buy the Pit Boss that I have if I could only have one grill. You can’t beat it for the cost and it holds a lot of meat so no issues of not cooking enough, due to shortage of grill space. I can easily fit 6-8 racks of St.Louis cut spare ribs, 2-3 full packer briskets size depending. 4-6 pork butts. This would be using the main cooking grates and the upper cooking grate too, just to give you an idea of the grill space. If you have any further questions about the Pit Boss feel free to ask and I’ll help you to the best of my knowledge on it.

      I don’t have any video on the P settings. I use the default P4 setting all the time. The thing with the P settings is just the timer for how fast or slow the auger will feed pellets. The higher P5 P6 will feed pellets faster then the P1 P2 settings. Giving you less smoke on the higher numbers and more smoke on the lower settings. Once you change the temp from the smoke setting, the P settings shout off and the control board goes off the heat to adjust feed time for the pellets.
