Any codes that takes that job is not only got to follow after Nick Saban but he's still going to be there while they're coaching looking over their shoulder. The same guy had a huge list of names of people that was going to go to Texas A&M including Mike Norvell if he was offered it and who did they end up getting the head coach of lonely Duke. Some of you seem upset, rejected, or put off at Lanning saying no. So I’ll explain it, and put this in the most relative example.
Most of us are men, so we all can relate.
Alabama is the hottest chick in town. Her man just moved away, or died, (Saban) and left her…. Lanning moved into town a couple years back, and has already been dating one of the hottest chicks in town. For most, she’s not as hot as the hottest chick (Bama), but she’s still pretty damn hot in her own right.
Hottest chick (Bama) hits up on Dan, but he says no. Only because he happy with the hot chick (Oregon) that he has now. He doesn’t want to leave her.
Ok, did you all follow? Comprehend? Savvy? Are you picking up what I’m putting down? Comprender?
This isn’t a “NO” To Bama or even A&M. This is a “YES” to Oregon. Dan and his family love being at Oregon. He has stated this repeatedly. He wants to raise his kids there.
His video is a recruiting pitch, which was a brilliant move.

The "Alabama can hire whoever they want" nonsense is already getting old. They can't get Lanning, Sark, or Smart so cleary "anybody they want" is a stretch. I would be shocked if Norvell or DeBore took the job also because they have an easier schedule, an expanded playoff, and can obviously recruit and win where they are with clear and much easier paths to the post season than they would have at Bama. Yea i get that competitors want a challenge but they also want to win and if youre going undefeated and making the playoffs then why leave?

The fact that he had already discussed it with Steve Sarkisian 2 years before he left for Texas tells me that Saban was already planning for this day back then and you know he discussed with Greg Byrne.

About 3 years ago I wrote to AD Byrne and suggested he must have a list of potential FB coaches at the ready that he updates every year to avoid past fiascos. Let's hope he did so. Don’t know why Alabama would even consider Norvell as Alabama’s next head coach. The guy’s winning record over the last 5-7 years at FSU is 2 winning yrs. VS. 5 losing yrs, I think. The guy doesn’t develop players. He uses the portal to get 1 and done players. He’s been lucky the last couple of years with building his team via the portal. With all these players leaving he now has to rebuild the team through portal players. He’s doing it again this year with all of the portal players they’re bringing in now. Bottom line, Norvell has everyone fooled. He’s a fraud! Making everybody think that FSU is some sort of perennial powerhouse program. They won the ACC because the other teams in the ACC sucked! They faced a real team against UGA and got bodied! Nothing to see here.

Tommy Rees. Think of Tom Osborne following DeVaney at Nebraska, think of Dabo following Bowden at Clemson. Common denominator, both were current assistants with zero HC experience at any level. Rees would bring continuity to team and staff, full of piss and vinegar. But ultimately only Saban's recommendation to Bryne would tip scales. Long shot for sure, but throwing that out there as a wild card.

This whole thing is like when LSU's GOAT baseball coach Skip Bertman, 18 years on the job and 5 national championships between 1991 and 2000, besides many other banners hung, retired in 2001. That's a dynasty to rival Saban's at Alabama football. I pitied the fool who took that job as expectations had been built up and there was no way any other mortal could continue that string. Yes, LSU fans are as passionate about baseball as football, at least since Bertman's run raised the bar of expectations, and because nobody at LSU cares about other sports except women's basketball and gymnastics. Mens' basketball is the 3rd most-popular show in the PMAC behind those other 2, in terms of butts in seats. Anyway, when Berman retired, LSU brought in Smoke Laval who did a pretty good job., In the 4 years he was at the helm, LSU got to the CWS twice but was 0-2 both times so out he went, given that everybody now expected the Bertman dynasty to continue. Then in came Paul Mainieri who kept the job for 14 years despite only getting to the CWS 5 times and only winning once. But overall, LSU baseball was pretty competitive. By now, LSU baseball fans had lowered their expectations and come to realize Bertman was the GOAT and those don't come along but once in all time. Now LSU has Jay Johnson who won a natty in his 2nd year so once again, expectations are rising and remembrances of the 1990s are stirring, so I'm sure if Johnson doesn't pull down a natty every other year or so, folks will be after his scalp :)

It was worse than when Georgia was the most dominant Defense possibly ever & Michigan was just happy to be there in ‘21. It heightens the irony of Saban’s retirement that it would come after a loss to a team no one thought could beat him & was presumed to be afraid of facing! So you were either not paying attention or didn’t want to fully give credit where credit was due! Either way, the Wolverines will be in the history books as the last team to do battle with the GOAT & sent him out to pasture with a big fat L! GO BLUE!!

The whole following Saban straw man argument was a little out of context cause it does apply for the 3 of the top 5 candidates floating around. I only use that argument for guys like Lanning, Sarkisian, and Norvell. It’s not because I think they are afraid of the job, it’s just that for them what they gain isn’t worth what they lose. All 3 already have solid buy in from their current universities, well established recruiting programs, and flush NIL collectives. Going to Alabama isn’t going to really improve any of that more than they already have. More to the point they’ve builit up more credit with their current Fan bases. Probably the biggest thing is that any decision they make will not have someone saying that’s not how coach Saban did it. So it’s not about being a competitor it’s more about ‘Working smarter not harder’ as my Mema use to say.
