    Its gonna be really funny seeing all the comments complain I didn't like the expansion as a whole when I address that in the first two minutes. Funny how some people love to be hateful without actually watching the video🤭

    TBF, Lore in Destiny has always served as a way to steer the ship back on track when the campaign would not, in addition to flesh out the whole world of Destiny. But the fact that almost every expansion heavily relied on the lore to keep it just somewhat understandable is shockign to say the least. I say this as someone who likes reading the lore

    • @RedShadowOfSaturn
      @RedShadowOfSaturn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      The lore has mostly been well done and interesting, credit where due. But you're right, it has been overused to right the ship and that's not good. Jez talked about that in his Lightfall story analysis, and he's 100% right. Lore should not be considered "the story." Lore should expand on the story and give it more context for those interested enough to seek it out.

Seasons were such a waste for destiny's potential over the years, the content might not have been that great in the seasons but the fact they wasted time making something that would go away from anywhere from 3 months to a year is inexcusable, my only issue with people shitting on bungie during the lightfall era was everyone focused on microtransactions and the bad dlc and not the glaring problem of seasons.

    Btw, about us using darkness despite the exo stranger saying we gave in, it's explained VERY SLIGHTLY, in the campign, and also agian in lightfall, that we control stasis.
    So basically, stasis in most timelines takes control of us because we didn't have the strength to overcome it or the discipline to control it. To use stasis, we have to bind it to our will completely, like holding down your leash when your dog sees a squirrel. This is again explained in lightfall multiple times with Osiris at first thinking we need to control Strand like we do with Stasis, this leads to the whole back and forth between Nimbus and Osiris anout control vs flow when trying to learn strand. (Which means our and Osiris' understanding of stasis and lack of listening to Nimbus is what killed Rohan...).
    So basically, in most timlines, we let stasis overpower us and give in to darkness and rage. Or we dont use stasis at all, and we have no way to fight back against Eramis. But this timeline, we control and discipline stasis so that we may safely use it to defeat Eramis. The problem is that this is hardly (but still done) explained in the campaign.

      This is actually wrong. I refer you to the lore book Bitter, "The Crux was broken." This lore book details how the Exo Stranger came to control Stasis, and her upbringing as a Bray went against her initial efforts and she lost control of Stasis. Why? Because she tried to control it. She comes to control Stasis because she learns to let go of that control. We never struggle with this in game, because the player character instantly masters every power they come across with Strand being the only exception.
      Lightfall effectively establishes that to use Darkness powers or abilities, you have to surrender control. That could, in hindsight, explain why Eramis doesn't seem to have full control over Stasis; she believes it is not only her gift, but it is her right and hers alone. She tries to control it to such a degree that what happens to Elsie happens to her, and unlike Elsie she doesn't have help to break free.
      Why and how the player Guardian "falls" in the Dark Timeline is never stated or explained. It could possibly be the Witness having a direct line to our Ghost somehow, something that I don't think it does to ANY other Ghost. It could possibly be a reference to how many players joked about joining the Darkness when Beyond Light originally previewed Stasis.
      EDIT: I am double checking the Dark Future lorebook just to fact check myself. It seems that, in that timeline, the Black Heart had corrupted the Guardians sent to investigate it; those Guardians presumably including us, given Destiny 1's story. We were corrupted long before Stasis even entered the Solar System there. As an aside, there is a hint there that Stasis cannot be controlled by mere strength alone. What this tells me is that Bungie cannot keep their own story straight.
      Actually, this makes Lightfall's story even worse, because with this knowledge we should not have struggled with Strand AT ALL.

    What's so annoying about Eramis is that she was so boring, cringy, poorly written, and wierdly animated in Beyond light. But come Season of the plunder when she came back she was way more interesting, then even more so in season of the seraph. Then she came back agian in season of the defiance to save mithrax, now in the final shape she abandoned the witness, which was foreshadowed at the end of season of the seraph and defiance. Now she's teased to return in episode: revenant.
    It's so annyoing how interesting the idea of eramis is, despite how poorly she was handled in the expansion where she was the main villian, but now that shes no longer the main threat for obvious reasons, shes WAY more interesting.

      @@filipgasic2642 It's so odd to me how whenever they make a new villain they tend to immediately kill them off in a raid but older villains get to have real effects on the story. Nezerac and Rhulk should have been much more important but instead Calus gets all the spotlight as a deciple of the witness. Even the witness is a new villain imo. While he did appear in older dlcs we didn't really know it was him nor see him until lightfall and then he's killed in tfs where all his lore is revealed. Characters like savathun, calus (till we killed him) and eramis get to keep popping up for no good reason. Xivu Arath is kinda a step in the right direction but she's probably gonna die in 1 dlc too.

    6:30 hey Nanokk, about the servidor thing, its stabilished in a campaing, i think during the red war but dont quote me in that, that the Eliksni as a race that lived under the traveler's light long ago, venerates servidors because they are like an effigy to the traveler (along with the ether thing)
    So Eramis destroying a servidor with stasis is meant to represent her shattering the obsession the Eliksni had with the light.
    Its a cool and meaningful scene, probably the most well thought scene in this entire expansion... A shame it is tied to poor storytelling

  • @redcrystal7x
    @redcrystal7x 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    6:12 The Eliksni don't *need* Servitors to generate Ether, but other methods are less efficient due to the scavenger-esque nature that has become of their people. Actually, in terms of story, this is one of the few points I really enjoyed, as we know from Destiny 1 (without delving into lore) that the Eliksni built the Servitors in the shape of the Traveler as a form of reverence. Eramis destroying one in front of her new house with Darkness power is actually a huge message in-world.
    I think they fumbled the aftermath, not really knowing what to do with Eramis and House Salvation, but in Beyond Light, this actually got me a little hyped.

  • @wickermind6668
    @wickermind6668 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    I know you said you'd disregard unstated lore comments, but I can't help myself. The reason why Eramis destroying that Servator was a big shocker to the Fallen is because they are extremely revered among their kind. Not only, as you stated, they create the ether they need to live, but they were made spherical to be in the image of the Traveler, and in fact, Fallen treat machines really highly due to the Traveler itself being a Machine God to them. So Eramis destroying that Servator, and having all House Salvation Servators be desecrated, is her essentially spitting on the image of her former god and saying "we don't need to worship the Traveler anymore!", and to instead join the Witness, who will give them the salvation they desire.

    I would disagree on the idea that Europa is boring. It was on of the coolest and unique aesthetics in the game where you have such a barren landscape contrasted by the massive fallen city in the north and then the futuristic bray labs. Not to mention the incredible skyboxes. It is way more diverse than any other location aside from the pale heart in my opinion.

    0:50 Just stumbled on this video today, but THANK YOU for analyzing Destiny campaigns in this fashion. I ask people all the time, and have yet to receive a concrete response..."tell me the entire story of Destiny 2, just using free in-game content and expansions, no external lore or seasonal stuff that's removed...and tell me, honestly, if that sounds like a cohesive narrative."
    The amount of CRITICAL story beats that took place during seasons, that specifically build up expansions, that are NOT present in the game to replay anymore, is insane. Final Shape, for a person who wasn't playing during the last two years of seasons, will likely not hit anywhere near as powerfully as the hardcore pre-order goblin dropping $100 every 12 months on content that's mostly sight unseen.

    • @acoustic_.

      @RedShadowOfSaturn 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @acoustic_. No, friend. Reread my comment. "Tell me Destiny 2's story ONLY using free intro content AND expansions...NOT content that doesn't exist anymore."
      That's the problem. The free intro content and expansions MISSING the seasonal story beats? Horrible skeleton of a story that makes little sense and removes most build up and gravity from bigger climaxes.
      Like Final Shape, for instance. If a person didn't experience Uldren returning as a Guardian and getting his memory back...hell, if all they saw was Uldren killing Cayde, then sees him in the Traveler, what does it mean to that person to see Crow and Cayde making nice?
      Catch my drift?

      @acoustic_. I mean yeah, they made 3 of them free when TFS launched, so yes technically, those too. But Lightfall still costs money, I meant that one too.
      In the exercise, I mean...JUST the expansions and free stuff that still exists, like the intro, NOT seasonal content OR the first four campaigns that were removed.
      The point I'm making is...the seasonal content that was removed, and to an extent the first four campaigns...help build up a lot of a tension and details in later releases that lose some punch without that context. And since they can't be replayed, how would a new player, who only played the first Forsaken mission, connect the dots to how Uldren (they don't even know he's crow when they reach Final Shape) is an ally leading the charge into the Traveler. 🤷‍♂️

    One thing I think you touch upon is the return of bag story telling. Forsaken and Shadowkeep had some grim themes that broke away from the cartoonish tone of year 1. This expansion just seemed to be not as narratively dark as I hoped considering that we are supposed to be helping the fallen escape a brutal dictator, the introduction of the dark vanguard, and the introduction of darkness powers. It just did not seem to be as compelling when shown in game because the game did a horrible job SHOWING the struggles that characters were going through unlike forsaken and shadowkeep.

Eramis kills the imitation Traveler with darkness while saying "we begin breaking free from our chains." She is subtextually saying that house salvation doesn't need to rely on the light anymore.

    Aside from the missed potential of the abandoned skyscrapers (I’ll admit, that is a flaw), I actually quite like Europa. Sure, there isn’t a ton to do, but then again it’s that case for just about every patrol zone bar the Pale Heart.
    I feel, however, that Europa makes up for the lack of activities with the amount of things to go and see. The I love walking through the Bray Exoscience facility, just for the sight seeing, and Riis Reborn is a pretty cool place to check out every now and then.
    Overall, as far as patrol zones go, I wouldn’t say Europa is the perfect patrol zone (again, especially when compared to the likes of the Pale Heart) but overall, I’d say Europa is pretty nice, and definitely above average when compared to the other places we’ve gotten in the past
    (Unrelated, saying lore doesn’t count for a location literally built up in the lore kinda blows the wind outta it. Lore exists in the game for a reason, and if you don’t want to read it that’s a subjective flaw, not an objective flaw)

    Destiny 2 Beyond Light in Content: this was when sunsetting occurred pretty much killing off all the fun weapons. It felt like you were being forced to pay for having most of your gear become useless and prior campaigns vaulted. It was done for reasons I understand but the approach and the lack of upfront new content really came off as bad faith practice. Your video helped me understand why playing the game during this time in its lifecycle it felt so hollow and half baked.

      The DLC's setting was supposed to be Encaledas instead of Europa, with the Scarlet Keep serving as the original Deep Stone Crypt. I believe this change was due to budget limitations at Bungie, which forced them to reuse existing assets to meet their DLC plans and prioritize upgrading the game engine. Originally, Beyond Light was intended as a rough draft for Destiny 3. Destiny 2 was seen as a temporary solution since its launch, plagued by bugs, frustrating developer tools, and only basic features. At that time, Bungie was more focused on venturing into the Chinese mobile gaming market with pay-to-win games, which led to their decision to leave Activision, especially after realizing that Activision had generated $1 billion in revenue from Eververse. However, this plan was disrupted when the Chinese government started banning video games. Subsequently, Bungie decided to upgrade the engine and continue with Destiny 2 until ultimately being acquired by Sony. This upgrade wasn't as comprehensive as developing a brand-new game, but it allowed for some quality-of-life improvements without disrupting the game's uptime.
      In short, Bungie kept changing long-term plans and was in budget mode. So they pinched every penny. The lockdowns had their challenges, but they probably weren't the reason BL sucked.

Back in shadowkeep and beyond light Bungie strung together a bunch of patrol objectives and 3 or 4 missions and called it a campaign. Those were truly the dark ages and I have no idea how I even tolerated it.

She basically had all of season of Plunder and then a good chunk of Seraph before she decided "Fuck it no gods I'm going to take as many of my people with me as I can and we're getting the fuck out of this cursed system"
    Her Character arc was actining rashly in spite, hitching her wagon to THE FUCKING THING THAT CAUSED HER PEOPLE'S APOCALYPSE, realized she was an idiot, and noped out rather than die choking on our bullets on the witness' orders.

Born in Darkness is also the best story quest in Destiny history imo and the dark future lore book was so freaking good. Plus the soundtrack was sooooo freaking good. When I take a step back and look at it, witch queen was a lot like this dlc, when you ask someone what made witch queen great, it's only two things, the campaign and the raid. Okay the campaign is an 8 hour experience at most isn't very hard on legend either, story is alright I guess, kinda corny and predictable. And the raid? One of the best. But everything else? Witch queen doesn't have much to offer. That's why I don't think witch queen ever deserved to be compared to forsaken or taken King, it did a campaign right for the first time in destiny history, but it barely did it right. And even then was forgettable, savathun didn't feel like a villain, you telling me the only thing the trickster hive God did, was lie to us and bring the traveler to the throne world? Her theme didn't fit the dlc at all

    • @BungieStudios
      @BungieStudios 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Between Bungie living in survival budget mode after leaving Activision and them stretching content, it is a wonder the story was cohesive at all. You had things like the Scarlet Keep being taken from Encaledas (Deep Stone Crypt) and used as a Hive castle in an irrelevant side plot. You had Beyond Light being recycled from a rough draft of Destiny 3. You had Witch Queen which was supposed to introduce Strand. You had Lightfall taking stuff clearly meant for Final Shape's introduction of Prismatic, from the holographic rainbow colors to weapons like Conditional Finality.
      Witch Queen might have had a fun campaign and raid, but it was significantly smaller in content than Taken King and Forsaken before it. All for the same price.

    @samaron8970 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I agree with a lot of what you said, though I do personally love the Eliksni aethetic whenever it appears. However, I can't agree with you about Eramis on the whole, she's not as impactful or manacing as some villains, no, but I think being dissapointed that she's not some insane war criminal is odd because that isn't really what she's meant to be, she's Destiny's most sympathetic antagonist, someone conflicted between a genuine love for her people and an insurmountable desire for revenge against the thing that took everything from her. Granted, she is at her best in the lore and in later releases, and I know the focus was on the campaign, however, to do a character judgement, you need to take into account everything the character has done, and if you're going to consider the aftermath of Oryx and Uldren's actions as part of their character, you need to do the same for Eramis. And also, reguarding the notion that she has no effect on the world, that's actually not true, she's the reason Rasputin is dead, and the reason Misraaks is alive, the former of which is definately a big deal since Rasputin was humanities greatest weapon.
    And reguarding where she is now, BUNGIE had her leave the system in a lore tab.
    And I do need to point out your hypocricy with the Savathûn thing, you complained about Xol by saying he'd be dead by the end of the expansion and so didn't matter, so complaining about Savathûn remainig relivant past the end of her expansion doesn't seem right. Especually since I think it's generally agreed upon that the stuff with Savathûn has all been pretty good.
    Please don't become like November Hotel and complain about everything even when it means contradicting yourself and the content is genuinely good.

    • @Nanokk_
      @Nanokk_  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Okay so I originally had this entire response written but then I accidentally clicked back on my mouse so apologies if this is a bit scrambled, I just wanted to get a response out.
      I appreciate the comment, I genuinely respect spending the time to leave the comment.
      I find Eramis to be a sympathetic villain somewhat true I guess, I feel pity on her for being so pathetic, but ultimately I find her continued failures to be one I don't care for. I acknowledge I left out the Rasputin part, genuinely I thought it was the Witness that was the reason for the sacrifice, but upon looking it up I was wrong. If I had known that I would've changed it, but I'll keep it noted. Unfortunately one success in a sea of failures doesn't change much for me. But Rasputin's sacrifice is an important moment in Destiny, I won't dispute.
      I can't attest to Eramis in the lore, since I explicitly don't read it as to not conflict with the campaign scripts, so I'll take your word for it regarding the lore.
      Also not surprised she fled the system lol
      Regarding that final point, I think Savathun is being milked. I didn't like that we didn't just kill her ghost when we had the chance, and I haven't been a far of her being dragged around since. Also with that Xol point, I complained that he was pointless as a villain, we already had the warmind, we didn't need a worm god, and the expansion itself agrees with me since he died and it really didn't matter to the larger story of Destiny.
      Having a character remain for longer isn't the issue, its how its done. For example, how Oryx is handled is something I enjoy, he hasn't been brought back over and over and used several times to push the plot forward.
      I'd really prefer not to be seen as another November Hotel, since I find that guy to be intentionally disingenuous and complains for the sake of complaining. My Witch Queen video is going to be actually quite long, and incredibly complimentary towards it. Plus once I've made all my videos, I plan on taking all the criticism I've gotten and fixing the issues in a huge video. Your criticism here will be noted.
      Once again I appreciate the comment

    • @samaron8970
      @samaron8970 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Nanokk_ Thank you for taking the time to make a respectful response, that's already better conduct than several big TH-camrs.
      I won't deny that Eramis has too many failures, and it does frustrate me to a certain extent as well, especually in season of the plunder in which she can'f aquire even one of the dozen relics she was after, and even in the Rasputin case, she still failed since her target was the Traveller, Rasputin sacrificed himself to stop her, which did a critical blow to the alliance, but it wasn't what she originally planned for. That said, I still think she's a great character because she has some genuine points, the house of light are protected by the last city, but they aren't allowed their own autonomy or sovereignty, they're only allowed to live so long as they play by humanities rules, they're basically a client species like the psions to the cabal and it makes sense for Eramis to oppose that. However she's also someone who could never let go of the past even to the point of self-destruction and hurting the people she wanted to protect, and she's been slowly learning that and growing from it, realising what truly matters and that the future means more than the past.
      That's why I think she's a great villain, you can map her full character arc, and I do believe she should have died before Final shape, I was dissapointed by Warlord's ruin because I was genuinely expecting a conclusion to her story, and instead we got a fun, but pointless side quest that could have been an exotic mission instead of a dungeon, and Eramis got tossed away in a lore tab despite the plot seemingly building to her, her dying would have also openned the door for a potentual guardian ressurrection, but that was never implied, just a thought.
      As for Savathûn, I still can't really agree with the idea that she's being milked, so far all her uses seem pretty good and it does seem to be building to something, the one spectre being that way back at the end of season of the Deep, BUNGIE said she'd never be as important as she was pre-witch queen, but they also said the Witness was the biggest bad in the universe and now they're shoving the Winnowwer in, so things might have changed there. I just think her uses have been sparse and important enough to claim she's being milked yet, if she's still doing the same stuff at the end of the next saga, then I'll say she's being milked.
      And as for Xol, I think the fact was that Warmind needed a villain, and there are a lot of people in the community that didn't care enough about Rasputin for him alone to carry an expansion, and the worm gods are also an important part of the lore. Nokris was also forshadowwed since the Taken King and Xol being the weakest worm god is supposed to make you fear the others, and probably would have succeded had the strike been harder.
      As for why I said that, I just got the impression from the Warmind video that you didn't like a villain that would die at the end of the expansion, so seeing you upset about one that lived past it raised my red flag, apologies if I missinterpreted that.
      And finally, reguarding the November hotel thing, my apologies, as I said, I interpreted it as you being upset about a solution to a problem you were also upset about, and that just reminded me of him, sorry, that was overly harsh.
      I woule like to stress the importance of research, since this video was expansion-focused, misrememberring the Rasputin thing is certainly forgiveable, however I just wouldn't like to see you fall into the same pitfall as EvenF, who neglects to research anything and then frames it as BUNGIE being bad writers, critisizing them for mistakes they didn't make. Generally, I believe in critisizing people for things they did, but defending them when they're accused of things they didn't do, no matter your feelings on someone on the whole, they should never be critisized for things of which they are innoccent.

    Idk man, I don’t think BL was like great, but I don’t think it was bad. It was just alright. Looking at it from the lens we have now makes it seem even worse. Kinda jarring in some points, like how Eramis randomly appears, the whole salvation house and their gimmick is kinda like we’re here now, now deal with us. But like it wasn’t bad like I said. Like the complaint we wish we could’ve had the subclass for the whole campaign I only really saw around lightfall. And then looking back on this campaign you’d say the same thing, but back then it wasn’t like that. It was the first time a new subclass and the implications behind it existed like that. Upon having it be the way it was executed once, lightfall should’ve learnt from it. But I don’t feel like BL should take some marks off for this or other stuff like that. It’s not near TFS or Forsaken or TK, but it wasn’t bad at all imo. Like a classic destiny expansion. And maybe that speaks to the fact Bungie could make their expansions go above and beyond and have the skill in their employees to do so. But for what Destiny has delivered as a whole, it was like a solid 6/10 for me, if 5 was an exact average. 90% of BL was average, a few things were kinda under average, stasis (especially for the time) was way beyond average. And it kinda evens out around that 6.

    Man I agree with a lot of the complaints but some things just land weird. Eramis isn't a great villain, but it looks way worse when you compare her in-campaign activities to other villains lore-defined activities. Talking about how easy the campaign is with a post Witch Queen sandbox also feels a little offputting especially since the vids on Forsaken and prior use footage from much weaker sandboxes (by necessity, I know).
    Europa being boring is a matter of personal taste imo - I love it as a true sci-fi destination especially when compared to Dreaming City/Throne World/Pale Heart - but i can see where you're coming from.
    The mid campaign kill enemies grinding sucks ass, i wont contest that at all. Just because other MMOs do it during their MSQs doesnt mean Destiny should

    • @Nanokk_
      @Nanokk_  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So something I mentioned at the start is I don't care about the lore, I don't focus on it, and eramis' impact (at least at this point) was minimal at best. Talking about how easy the campaign was became almost a necessity because you can't ignore just how easy it is now. It was harder at launch I'm aware but it's been power crept to hell and back, it needs addressing.
      I personally wouldn't call the Dreaming City, throne world, or the pale heart sci-fi locations, and more fantasy. Which Bungie should lean into way more

    Shadowkeep is more of a snoozefest in my opinion it did absolutely nothing compared to forsaken and the whole campaign can be boiled down to doing bounties instead of an actual story

      Tried warframe, couldn't get into it. If I'm gonna review any mmo after this it'll be Elder Scrolls Online

    Beyond light has my favorite villain, eramis, my favorite element, stasis, and my favorite music of the entire franchise. Everything else? Complete ass. It sucks it didn't get a good campaign like witch queen

    I quit d2 during forsaken came back in splicer I gotta say I enjoyed Europa and beyond light I think you're just over exposed to destiny's grindy repetitive nature having a fresh perspective on it I think beyond light is an awesome dlc and the hate is unjustified.

      Idk man I don't remember a campaign of a single other game I've played giving us busy work as half of the story. That's not over exposure to destiny's grind, that's having standards

    Horrible campaign. I unironically thought that it'd be the best campaign when I first played it. I was shook and taken back by how dogshit it was

    Trash video. Shadowkeep is 100x worse than Beyond Light.
