  • Leopard seals are one of the Antarctic animals our passengers most want to see. But beloved as these polar marine mammals are, there is still a lot we don’t know about them. In this colorful video, we will give you 12 leopard seal facts we do know.
Though these facts are far from comprehensive, they do address some of the more frequently asked questions we get about leopard seals. This includes such topics as leopard seal size, diet, social behavior, and more.
If you’re lucky enough to see one of these fascinating (and potentially ferocious) animals on your own Antarctica trip, these facts will give you something to consider while snapping your photos:
    1. The Latin name for the leopard seal is Hydrurga leptonyx, meaning “slender-clawed water-worker”
    2. Adult leopard seals weigh between 200 - 600 kg (440 - 1,325 pounds)
    3. When fully grown, leopard seals have an average length of 2.5 - 3.5 meters (8 - 11.5 feet)
    4. These Antarctic marine mammals can swim at speeds of up to 37 kph (23 mph)
    5. Leopard seals can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes
    6. Though leopard seals are primarily solitary, they group up during the mating season
    7. Leopard seal diet consists of krill, fish, cephalopods, penguins, and even other seals
    8. These ice-loving seals are the largest of the “pagophilic” seals, or Antarctic ice seals
    9. Leopard seal pups are about one meter (three feet) long and weigh roughly 32 kg (70 pounds)
    10. In the wild, leopard seals live to be about 25 years old
    11. The only known natural predator of leopard seals is the orca (killer whale)
    12. Leopard seals are the only seal species to hunt warm-blooded prey

I am forever in total awe of these misundertsood yet highly intelligent mammals. Just something about them are not prehistoric nor stupid otherwise they would be inclined to seek out far more than Pingu colonies on ice, yet every human expedtion into their own hostile world who want to film and embrace their confined lives, would also become daily fodder. The commentary in the video supports this 100% enlightened view of mine and testifies to the fact that these extraordinary sub-zero athletes are brighter and just as humane as we ourselves.

They didn't mention that unlike all the other pinnipeds, in leopard seals, the females are larger than the males. Females 13ft 1,300lbs Males 10ft 600 lbs. Maybe to have bigger pups as an apex predator.

Is a good theory to explain this singularity. Although I have another theory, which says that there was a generation of females that was born with some type of genetic anomaly and for some reason these females were the only ones to have offspring (perhaps because they were stronger than common females, they ended up with the others). being the only ones that mated this happened to be a characteristic of the species

Beautiful animals! We have to remember, man is the most indiscriminate predator on the planet before judging animals doing what they do to survive....this is how a leopard seal do!

Good video because they admit we still have much to learn and point 12 clarified much for me . In New Zealand there is no Ice at all so they will change and evolve in front of our eyes . They don't go under ice so they can be more social and seem to have no problem with heat ! Fascinating .

This group includes squid, octopus and cuttlefish. In Antarctica there are approximately 70 known species in the Southern Ocean, but still very little is known about the group in this region.
Leopard seals will predate on any of the species within their diving range, a good article is this one: www.researchgate.net/publication/7002265_Southern_Ocean_Cephalopods

    Orca is not a Whale

    • @OceanwideExpeditions
      @OceanwideExpeditions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Correct, it is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family. However, they're often called orca, orca whale or killer whale, which can cause confusion.
