Ukraine War: How Sanctions on Russia Will Backfire Against Western Imperialism, w/ Prabhat Patnaik

  • The fighting in Ukraine might be a European war but its consequences are global, and it may even cause changes in geopolitical balances, relations and multipolarity. How can we understand this war as anti-imperialists? What will its global economic consequences be? And what will be the result of the unprecedented sanctions imposed on Russia?
To help make sense of it all, Rania Khalek was joined by Marxist economist Prahbat Patnaik, professor emeritus at JNU and author of “A Theory of Imperialism” and the more recent “Capital and Imperialism: Theory, History, and the Present,” both co-authored with Utsa Patnaik.
Articles by Prabhat Patnaik that are discussed in the video:

We Zimbabwe Communists fully support Russian intervention against Nazi-led Ukraine and the USA and NATO. But we welcome sanctions against Russia because they delink Russia from Western economic control. And, unlike Zimbabwe, Russia has the will and capacity to reorganise its economy.

You might be surprised but there were jews in Wehrmacht also. The highest profile Jewish figure serving was undoubtedly Field Marshal Erhard Milch, Air Inspector General of the Luftwaffe, who, with Hitler’s permission, was later reclassified as an honorary Aryan. Another interesting figure of Jewish descent was Emil Maurice, an early member of the National Socialist Party, a founding member of the SS, a personal friend of Hitler and fellow prisoner in Landsberg, and for a time Hitler’s personal chauffeur. Hitler in fact rescinded Himmler’s attempt to expel Maurice and his brothers from the SS, and personally designated Maurice an honorary Aryan.
Being a Jew is not an alibi. One of the Ukrainian oligarchs is a Jew also - his name is Igor Kolomoisky, he was calling himself "zhidobanderovets", which literally means "a Jew who supports Ukrainian Nazi "hero" Bandera". Stepan Bandera was a Jew himself but was still responsible for mass murderers of jews in Ukraine. Kolomoisky was the main funder of Zelensky's 2019 Presidential campaign. He financed about 8 Neo Nazi militias in 2014/2015 also, including the Azov Battalion.

I'm so glad Prahbat made the point about there being two different kinds of nationalism. I've always said Palestinian nationalism is historically a lot different to German nationalism. One is a anti colonialist and pro-liberation and the other is pro-colonisation and anti-liberation. It was something I had thought independently but never seen anyone else say, and people think i'm smoking too much ganja when I try make the point.

The Nationalism of the NS Germans was a purely reactionary force and never had any progressive potential. But the Nationalism of the Chinese, who fought against their fascist occupyers, was progressive.
US American Nationalism doesn´t have any positive potential. The Nationalism of the Vietnamese in their war of liberation against the French and later the US is a completely diffrent thing.
British/English Nationalism has to be reactionary, whereas Scottish, Welsh and especially Irish Nationalism have progressive potential and most Irish Nationalists are Socialists or at least progressive.
It´s Nationalisms of opressor nations as opposed to those opressed and striving for liberation.

On ‘Russian nationalism’: the Russian Federation has over 300 formally recognized ethnic groups. It is a multi-ethnic nation and probably one of the first if not the most diverse country in the world. Due to its ethnic diversity the USSR was organized on the basis of respect and friendship between nations. Diplomacy based on respect and finding mutual benefit is at the core of Russian diplomacy and is in drastic contrast to the Western hierarchical domination approach.

It is very easy to be on the side of Ukraine, because the media narrative of an underdog taking the challenge to an "Evil", "Dictatorial" regime under a "Nazi" strongman is one we have been acclimatized, and primed to, over millennia through narrative storytelling.
I work in this business, so I know this game.
That is exactly what is happening, and has been happening, in the mainstream media bureaus of the "West" for as long as "narratives" and storytelling principles have been in use. In there narratives, the sources to proliferate them are funded, controlled, and proliferated are predominantly "Western" and what is considered "wrong" is valued in a spectrum defined by neo-liberal ideologies--which are also defined based on their own experiences and standards--so anything, anyone, any event, any idea not falling into that realm is immediately denounced, rejected and tried to be eliminated by brute neo-liberal-imperialistic forces led by the United States (the examples are numerous: Vietnam, Iraq, Panama, Cuba, Syria, Libya, Yugoslavia, Venezuela, Yemen, the goes on).
It is not easy to be a Putin in these times, to stand up against this world order, and to do what he is doing, with the interests of the Russian people on his mind. However, to demonize him and dismiss his motivations just because the media narrative swings to a certain well-used and manipulative playbook, is just patently wrong.
If we really want to solve any problem, we have to look into context and motivations, not just appeals to emotion--which never solve anything--here are some arguments that make a very clear case of why we are where we are.
There is actually substantial proof, you just have to search. There are even currently declassified and "unredacted" documents to show the chain of broken promises. Some proof is also so blatant, on camera itself that it's mind boggling how much propaganda is being spewed in English speaking Western legacy media.

Sanctions are biting back at Americans, as cost of running your vehicles are no exorbitant with rising cost of per barrel fuel.
Loses of jobs, reduced trades reduced GDP performance of such nation. Sanctions might negatively impact Russia, but side effect of sanctions would bite US, and under performed its economic performance.

I am originally from Lebanon and I am over 60 now but I want you to know you are the copy cat of my first love who unfortunately I lost touch with. Her name is Wafa. She was Muslim and I am Christian but religion is based on our parents religion and it never interfered in our love.

Excellent interview, as always! Love the work you do Rania, and appreciate that you are mainstreaming these incredibly important thinkers and POVs.
One thing that I have seen tho is an argument that would disagree with your claim that Russia isn’t offering anything other than capitalism and Russian nationalism. While those are certainly present, I think that fails to acknowledge that anti-capitalists and left forces in Russia and Ukraine have expressed varying levels of support for the operation, and it reflects the anti-colonial nature of Russia’s confrontation with NATO.
It’s true that the dominant forces in Russia aren’t ideologues, but in this present crisis won’t Russia be forced to move away from neoliberalism and toward genuine geoeconomic multi-polarity? I think that this is valuable in its own way for progressive forces, as it will push the Global South increasingly toward regional alignments and renewed strategic autonomy during a period where U.S. economic power has reversed when compared to the NIEO period of the 60s and 70s. Progressive forces will have room to seize leverage against their bourgeoises who now see that NATO is not guarantor of their grip on power, and that the imperialist system will happily sacrifice their country for its own purposes should it be advantageous to do so.

Mr Patniak is right Rania. A currency is solid when there is faith in it. If it is guaranteed by the government and has faith in it then trade can be done with that. It is nonsense to do trade based on one currency like the dollar. When the country is self sufficient then even better because the currency remains in the country. Actually, Russia will become stronger economically. For most of the European countries this is not the case. It is Europe that will suffer most, especially with the extra burdon of Ukrainian refugees and the higher cost of living. Look at Greece, they are not self sufficient and will suffer more because it is under pressure by near bankrupt U S banks just to pay interest. The U S has been a basket case since 2008 financial crises with 30 trillion dollars in debt and has resorted in stealing from other countries that it sanctioned. Selling weapons will not solve the problem.

Thanks once again for this excellent video. India doesn't need to take sides and support the conflict. But it should be ready to do business with anyone who wants to support India's stance. Indian literacy (not even education) is still at 75%..so most Indians don't know where is or what is EU/NATO/Ukraine/Russia..they are more concerned about 'food' and 'survival'. The Indian media goes left and right with tantalising music in the background to cover the conflict. The Indian leadership is dependent on Russia for its military supplies. It wanted to go with the west but always received a could shoulder for the past 70 years. We asked for computer chip manufacturing and we got 'lays', 'ruffels' and 'pringles'. We asked for weapons like B83, reaper drones, assault rifles, F-35 (denied and now India built its own Tejas and very soon the AMCA will be built), M777 Howitzers (we have our Dhanush now), Abrams tanks (we have Arjun MBT now), Ohio class submarines, tomahawk and patriot missiles but we're denied and India has built several missiles on its own (Ago, Prithvi, Trishul, Aakash), aircraft carriers..but all were refused and India has been spending decades to build these in its own.. then India asked for nuclear power plants and again a no..We asked for cryogenic engines for its space program but we're denied.. thankfully Indian have made them on its own.. India asked for GPS at a critical juncture and it was denied and we have our own Navic. UK owns the Kohinoor and nearly 2 trillion in compensation which we will probably never get back..India is still not a permanent member of the security council due to western hypocrisy. The west has very restrictive entry into their countries denying visas..and yet those who managed to get there have shown their commitment to the west.. so India doesn't need to take sides..or I would say it is taking both sides..India is against wars, and has seen no attempts on either side to stop..so it can't support much.. it will not support much since it has too many domestic limitations and not much support from the northern hemisphere..I believe that it's best for the world to leave India alone if it can't be helped..we can and will help ourselves..and it is not fighting either for the Russians nor for the west..and lastly this is a RACIAL war and EU/NATO would like to take over both Ukraine and Russia and resurrect the Third Reich in the northern hemisphere and dominate the world..we can't be parties to racist ideologies and will have to fend ourselves. One must also not forget the genocide commited by the US in the Bhopal Gas tragedy where half a million people had been massacred in 1984 and no compensation was ever paid. India can and will take its own decisions and it needs no explanation.

The imperialistic policy of west can be seen with respect to India, the current India government which is an extension of RSS largely owe their existence thanks to continued support of US and British in initial years, while moving past cold war relations, decreasing dependency on Russian arms was good from Indian point of view but at the same time increasing dependence on West is also a not a good idea long term, it has potential of forming an anti India alliance in neighbourhood as they are increasing looking up to alternatives namely China, multi polar world is most suitable world for India which I am not sure it can achieve with current power(soft and hard) which has decreased drastically with rise of China and foolish policies of this government, the permanent goal Indian foreign policy has always been self reliance as in everything like what China has done since the times of Nehru and it should be permanent goal, all other things comes secondary.

55:25 i think Chomsky once mentioned that when South Korea developed, they prevented capital flight by just making it illegal. and the punishment they had for capital flight at the time, was the death penalty! they went from being a poor country (similar to some African countries today) to one of the wealthiest and most developed countries.
after economic development capital constraints can be (somewhat) lifted again, because then short term money can be made by investing in the high tech sector. while pre development short term money could largely be made by resource extraction (like in third world countries), because building knowledge intensive sectors would take longer (meaning: capital wouldn't invest in it, the government has to do it).

Bartering sounds a good idea in the intermediate disaster period till countries recover, only needs to get together and negotiate. Even citizens can do this as long as they produce essentials locally. Produce biogas from refuse, grow your food, wear the same things, go back to basics.
Build houses on elevated platforms to avoid rising water levels while the drains, water diversion schemes take place. The professionals in the first world can help design, global citizen power need to start now. The planet is in danger. The citizens need to take charge and help each other in the world at a large scale. A challenge for the bright young in the first and third world, so called.
