An adult american population endlessly disappointed, endlessly frustrated, and endlessly (and easily) misled by unaccountable, hostile government administrations and corporate media for decades and decades~and they Never learn. Dude I've loved Ben for ages but I've never heard him speak on something like this. He knows his sh*t. Describing such countries as Iraq, Iran, Syria, etc. as "resource nationalist capitalist countries" makes perfect sense. Compare that to America though, that don't even nationalize the basic resource necessities of life, they just let the people pay for it out of their pockets and starve.

Well, then NATO/US would have continued to pile up missiles, threatening to 'invade' Russia 'sooner or later'. So, a 'win-win' situation for NATO/US. 2. You did not mention (Apartheid) Israel, the dominant imperialist in Middle East. And its role in promoting & protecting (white) western imperialist interests. (frm NZ)
I agree with you that NATO was going to invade eventually. They had already overthrown Ukraine's government, started a civil war, propped up far-right terrorists, and repeatedly ignored diplomatic resolutions to the conflict they started. I can't imagine a timeline where NATO allows Ukraine to stay neutral, especially not after investing so much into them. I suspect that before the invasion, NATO was about to do something to further escalate tensions that western media is conveniently not telling us.

This discussion and analysis is brilliant as it clears up a lot of confusion about the nature of the conflict. I myself was confused and I made the mistake of categorising the conflict as purely inter-imperialist. Thank-you comrades for this detailed analysis.
It is imperialist action, Russia's invasion is not justified, nor is it solely the fault of the West, and the explanations within this podcast merely distract from what Russia is doing rather than holding them accountable. None of the excuses made hold water for other countries taking similar actions. Why should we grant such cover of logical fallacy to Russia? It's very disheartening to me that people swallow whitewashing of horrendous actions like this.
@@802Garage Of course it is horrendous what's been happening to the Ukrainian civilian population just as it had been horrendous what was happening to the civilian population in those predominantly Russian speaking provinces in easten Ukraine. There's two important events that gave impetus to these tragic events. One was the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the other was the right-wing anti Russian coup in 2014. If NATO was disbanded and a collective security pact was established after the Soviet Union was dissolved we wouldn't be where we are today. Why didn't NATO (headed by US imperialism) do that. NATO was established to combat the influence of the Soviet Union so shouldn't it have been a case of no Soviet Union, no NATO? And then there was the 2014 coup which American Imperialism was in involved in. The question is who provoked all this?

They attempted to reach diplom agreements for yrs. Waiting longer, having knowledge of a mass nazi incursion into Donbass, the credible threat of staging nukes there, further growth of fascism in Ukraine aimed at Russia. Waiting longer wouuld have certainly resulted in WWIII w a NATO Ukraine.

I think Brian's theory that Russia saw what the next move of the US was and that Russia then decided to preempt that move makes sense. I also think that the military part of the war is essentially over because the entire Ukraine Army is in a cauldron. None of the Ukrainian Government actions speaks to confidence or strength, but rather to impending defeat.
But what is Putin's plan of governance in Ukraine after defeat of the Ukrainian military? Who is he going to install?
@sabine reynaud it looks like Russia will be putting nukes in Belarus to preemptively act against NATO. I assume this will keep the US away. We also have seen the US weaken its dollar position in the long term. That is going to be a problem in the next few years.
@@sabinereynaudsf I'm wondering that too. If we take Putin's word for it, his plan is to leave just it alone after demilitarizing and denazifying it. What that means exactly, I'm not sure.

Great Analysis, notably the banks that handle the transactions for Gas for Europe are not included in the sanctions. What the US and Europe are doing is showing it's actually weak position. They've pushed China and Russia closer together and also facilitated for them to gain more independence.

Why is Russia's decision a bad one?, if Russia did nothing continue to negotiate with the West, the situation would be worse. US will set up the missile systems Ukraine would have become a NATO country and Russia would be vulnerable.

The definition is indeed hard to pin down. IMO, for now, unless Russia establishes military bases or other presence to control the extraction of economic wealth from Ukraine for its own benefit while bullying other to stay out... I don't think what has happened thus far can be deemed as "imperialism."

I have a lot more respect for Ben after this episode. I had no idea he was that well-read in marxist theory. I actually have some reading to do because besides Lenin and Luxemburg I haven't actually read most of the works he mentioned. The claim that Russia is an imperial power really doesn't seem to hold up, as it doesn't for China (and the people who claim that for one often claim it about the other). Of course, as they said: they would like to be. A lot of well-meaning leftists just use the word imperialism the way liberals do: as a synonym for "bad thing." That might be good enough for sloppy, moralistic liberal 'analysis,' but it really doesn't cut it for a scientific socialist material analysis. The fact that the global south and socialist countries of the world are alining themselves with Russia is an important material consideration to take into account even if the invasion itself is rash, costly in human lives and morally dubious. I'm glad Ben and BT made clear that they don't support the invasion and know Putin is a right-wing anticommunist, which basically takes the legs out of the inevitable criticism they will get for stating the obvious but inconvenient.
Yes, I agree with everything you say. I might still disagree with Ben's takes, but now I can clearly see where he's coming from and he's actually said things I have/would have said. I do respect him, and it's so rare to see such calm analysis from somebody who's actually read Marx (instead of liberals who just quote Marx to appear cool) in the English world at least.

I think the confusing notion is Lenin’s marxian concept of imperialism and its qualifier of “exporting finance capital” to other countries i.e. transnational loans. Russia is capitalist, no one doubts that, and they loan some countries money. Does that make a country imperialist?
I do not think so. Imperialism requires a hegemonic international bourgeoisie, and Russia’s bourgeoisie in reality have a stunted influence over the global economy and politics.

Firstly, they are just a unit of soldiers not special forces.
Second, before this conflict it was an incredibly small unit, in the hundreds of men not even thousands if I'm not mistaken.
Third, there is evidence that their goals are primarily to be against Russian meddling in Ukraine, not racial supremacy.
Fourth, most countries have Nazis and if not they have some other extremist elements, including Russia.
Fifth, a Nazi unit which is an extreme minority within an entire nation does not justify an invasion and it is not in any honest way a reason that Russia has invaded.
Sixth, the Azov unit now has more member and more weapons than ever thanks to Russia, though most new members joined only to fight Russia and not out of ideology.
Seventh, if anywhere with Nazis needs attacking, then the world better unite and invade the USA soon.

What I am expressing, which may be a bit too nuanced for you, is that simply using the label "Nazi" may not be pointing a full picture. Let me be clear, anyone using symbols from Hitler's Nazi military is clearly at the least misguided and at worst a complete enemy of the people of the world. Even a cursory glance through my history of comments on any number of channels and social media would lay bare that I do not support or endorse any form of Nazi ideology, including that of the Azov unit. I'd like to object to a point made at about 45 min. I think Ben sometimes (rightly) uses the fact of US coups to explain why a coup'd people should not be subject to odious debt. I contend that a similar dynamic is going on, here. I guess there is a contradiction causing confusion regarding "sovereign".

The other elephant in the room that's not talked about is Germany. The fear of German and Russian moving closer toward each other would upend US influence on Europe and will be a direct threat to any justification for NATO. Sphere of influence would directly challenge US hegemony. It's ALWAYS been a huge fear. Some great articles about how much of this is also about keeping Germany down even more so than the other European countries.

The (capitalistically) differentiated notion of empire that they discuss is important to highlight. However, as assessed against the generic notions of empire* and imperialism* (of which the notions discussed in this video are differentiations), this invasion is an imperial war of aggression perpetrated by the Russian state (even though it is not an instance of the capitalistically differentiated form of imperialism, and even though it was preceded by indefensible provocations that nevertheless in no way, shape, or form excuse the invasion itself, particularly (but not exclusively) because of the scale of the invasion).
* A hierarchical society whose ruling and other higher-power classes accumulate power from both a core base of people and other resources immediately associated with that society and a peripheral base of people and other resources only mediately associated with that society. (Here "classes" are differentiated by differing degrees of socially conditioned power, but the narrower Marxist distinction between the class that controls capital and the class that does not is of course implicit in and deeply relevant to that broad characterization of classes.)

Explain that to the Ukrainians or even the Russians. Neither Russia nor China are in true solidarity with the global South. Chinese is building toll bridges, buys lands and owns mayor resource extraction enterprises in Africa. It's win-win development might be more benevolent, but nevertheless, more capital gains flow back to China than do flow to the global south.

Russia and China pursuing their interests does _not_ conflict with our interests, where as bandits pursuing their interests does. We don't expect charity from anyone, but if others pursuing their interests puts a check on the bandits, we can only be grateful to them.

In Russia, many leftists just take the position that "vanguard battles" are taking place in Ukraine between two blocs of imperialist predators, one of which is headed by the United States, and the second by China. As for my vision of the situation, I do not think that China pushed Putin to decide to conduct a special operation in Ukraine, rather, on the contrary, the Biden administration, guided by the strategy of "controlled chaos", pushed Russia into the arms of China.

The “debt” = savings accounts at the Fed in the form of interest bearing treasuries. The bonds were bought w/$ already spent into the economy via deficit spending. Bond sales are not borrowing operations; they are a tool of monetary policy so Fed can hit its overnight rate target
So, what I got from this conversation is that Israel is also an imperialist country, taking into consideration their land grabs. Russia not, they only want to safeguard their own country and have ethnical Russians to have autonomous rule.

The US just wants Russia to become another poodle like Germany or the UK and accept whatever the US wants whether they like it or not, whether it is harmful to Russia, or not, as they just did to Germany with the pipeline. The US will never accept Russia as an equal or someone they need to respect, or any other country, for that matter that does not bow down to the US. Therefore, unless Putin took this opportunity he would have to give up and allow US missiles pointed at Russia throughout the Russian borders with Ukraine. Moreover, if Putin continues to wait for the US to behave differently, then only a war against the US would have been possible, in the near future, an impossibility. That is why he chose to invade, because he wants Russia to remain an independent country and not just a US annex like all the other countries of Europe. Look how all the US puppet countries act in concert with everything the US does, whether they agree or not, whether it hurts their own nations or not. How sick is that!

How can Becker be so familiar with the 2008 decision to bring Georgia and Ukraine into NATO without being aware of Zbigniew Brzezinski's book The Grand Chessboard, which laid out this same scenario which was all about destabilizing Russia to force regime change, and leading to breaking Russia up into three parts?
He doesn't read Brzezinsky, . . not sure why that's a bad thing. Because it's evidence of imperialist intent?
