I'd use Degreaser more often but I'm absolutely smitten with my flamethrower skin and I feel I need the extra few airblasts because I reflect obsessively. There's just so much spam in your average 12v12 game and ammo packs aren't guaranteed like people think they are, especially on certain maps. Good content as always, looking forward to future uploads.
Stock is by far the best flamethrower, you can do all the combos just the same including flare punch enemy pyros. Degreaser also neuters your after burn damage in exchange for giving combo pyro training wheels. Good pyros don't need the degreaser or its downsides
Personally, I would only recommend using the Axtinguisher if you're running a low-damage or utility secondary like the Detonator, the Scorch Shot, or the jetpack because the Axtinguisher provides burst damage for finishing targets off. If you're using a shotgun of choice or the Flare Gun then your secondary already performs the burst damage job. The one time when I would recommend pairing the Axtinguisher with another burst damage weapon is when you want to hunt unaware Heavies as a Pyro for some reason. And as much as I love my Strange Specialized Killstreak Festive Axtinguisher, the Powerjack and the Backscratcher are better than it in, like, 90% of cases when you're playing offensively.
dragon's fury and flare gun like father and son also its good since it covers the airblast penalty and the range problem and it does 15 more damage with max afterburn
"Offensive" Pyro That's a poor and perfect choice of words at the same time lmao *You've put yourself in a very dangerous spot if you dare mention the phlog AND The scorch shot in the same loadout* I admire your courage
I've been watching your content, and may I just say I think you're exactly what the Pyro main community needs. I think you can do for Pyro what Uncle Dane did for Engie. Keep up the good work!
I like Pyro, and it's clear the equip combos make or break it as much as any class of TF2 (e.g: go try Heavy with the Brass beast set, a deffensive Minigun with a Lunchbox geared towards flanker/ambusher melee rush with a melee that MASSIVELY WORSENS the damage Vulnerability the Steak applied onto you, every class has some crap combos, Pyros are no exception). What i actually see the Phlog do is be an Option for highly offensive Pyros (eschew support duties (aside Spychecking), go frontline flanker/ambusher to deal punishing blows), the Scorch shot simply is TOO GOOD a synergy with it for most players, good or bad, difference being good players make Phlog tactics work with any other flamethrower, yet i can still see that ANY alternative to a phlog has to readjust the method, Combo pyro (degreaser + Flare or PA) needs to flank, then attack and combo burst the target, but he cannot deal with more than 2 foes, so target flexibility decreases (against a Payload cart with 5-7 enemies it's 100% suicide, a Phlog can burn at least 3-4 of them and massively drain everyone else's HP, even more with a pocket medic ubering him at the right moment), flanker pyros (if using backburner, but most flanker strategies can be run with any flamethrower) will need to run ambush where a Phlog can WM1 (both are situations experienced players WILL take notice and prepare accordingly depending on what the enemy pyros seem to be geared with and they know of) and is just as likely to fail or end earlier thanks to players taking notice of the Pyro , a backburner will usually end 1-2 foes if played smart, a Phlog will be the same unless some of the pushing foes took some damage from your side. Phlog is tbh a pyro weapon meant to be used specifically to either hardblock a cart being pushed by a lot of the enemy team, block a cap of a point entirely through flanking or surprise WM1 attack (a pocket medic ubering is also desirable) or deliver a heavy flank. Phlog lives and dies in the attack, trying it on a more deffensive play is rather suicidal (deffense is where Degreaser or stock should be used instead of Phlog), flanker Pyro is also one of the methods for a Phlog to excel, flank, then deploy it right behing enemy frontmost force is.
Cheers glad you enjoy! Yeah I was surprised how useful it was actually, and you can even reflect rockets at soldiers' feet to get the minicrit bonus! Might make a video going into more depth on the Reserve Shooter in the future 👍
I just got tf2 last week and only have 30 hours. Stock and dragon fury are the only flamethrowers I have and after watching this I can really feel the slow switch speed, can’t wait until I find a degreaser
Personally the scorch shot is by far the most fun combo weapon the pyro has, the stun and knock back lend themselves up for set ups or funny moments, the bounce can be used for sync jumps which I believe put higher than the detonator but I could be wrong, it gives you the fastest ttk on a heavy with the axtinguisher with a direct hit and two melees, and gives you an option during lulls in fights where their isn't anything going on. Don't get me wrong, the scorch shot doesn't require skill if you want to use it to spam a choke but all of the classes can do that exact same thing. It's how it's used in other ways which gives it its flare gunnyness.
These videos are the kind of that I'm looking for! Great explanation and editing! I was searching for months for reflect guides, detonator jumps or other things, but found nothing really good or easy for me to understand. Pyro used to be my second favourite class, but after I found nothing on how to really improve I dropped him and started playing Spy and Demo more. Now I can't wait to hop into the game and start practice Pyro again! Thank you for lighten up the flame for me! You earned a new sub!
I was around for the glory days of the OG degreaser and Axtinguisher combo, my main was degreaser, shottie/flare (depending on the range requirements of the map), and the Axtinguisher. This was before they got nerfed, it was criminal and hilariously fun. I've returned after a long break and I'm watching this video to get back into my Pyro main, this is a nice refresher course. As been playing around with all the new weapons and whatnot.
Finally! Somebody who makes videos on Pyro! My personal play style is a mix of defense and combo with a bit of flanking. I just like being able to check for spy's while roaming around and killing at close range. I also use the stock because I like air lasting a lot.
I personally use mwheelup for primary, mwheeldown for melee, and F for secondary, it works wonders on all classes. Suprised more ppl dont use this setup
I only got tf2 recently, and I've always wanted to have pyro as my main, the idea of taking the entire enemy team by suprise and lighting them all up is addicting. I don't buy weapons in the game so I rely on random weapon drops, my first three drops for pyro? Degreaser, flare gun, axetinguisher. I subsequently see this as fate, and I must dedicate myself to learning the ways of the combo pyro. Thank you for this very helpful and informative video 🙏🙏🙏
I love the fact that you have specific plans for future projects, I know from experience that it's a great motivator. I really wish you further success and the best of luck with the algorithm!
I blend together Flank and Offensive playstyles I am too bad at aiming flares and defensive playstyle is too boring for me, so i use Dragon's Fury with a Detonator
I commonly use Degreaser, Detonator and the Axtinguisher by default. I can't live without the mobility the Detonator provides. But, depending on the game flow especially defending on last or to avoid getting steamrolled, I go Pybro with Stock, Detonator/Scorch, and Homewrecker. Kinda weird but I don't feel like using shotties with a Pyro.
I kinda feel the same way, if I wanted to do quick close range damage with a shotgun, I’d be playing scout (note that I don’t think it’s a bad load out, I personally don’t like using hitscan weapons on pyro)
WOAH!!! Thanks man, i've been trying to get the hang of combo pyro for a while now and this guide is *really* helpful. Can't wait to see more of your stuff bro.
Was literally watching your videos on airblasting and the Detonator when this uploaded. Your videos are so calm, entertaining to watch and very helpful!
Eyyy lets goo, tsym for taking my request! I love playing pyro and your content really helps me improve. And for diagram that you shown at the start of the video, I’m probably a combo pyro with the degreaser, detonator and the axtinguisher. While swapping to defensive to airblast ubers. Great video btw, music is good with the sections they go with and the gameplay fits pretty well as well.
i remember you from that snowycoast match! i was casually watching this because why not, and i see myself in the video, what?! this is some good stuff man, keep it up! looking forward for the next videos :>
Thank you for introducing other shotguns I’m glad someone’s giving me useful information, even for the reserve shooter. I’ll look forward for more videos.
thanks bro this is very helpful, i love the pyro so this guides are amazing. Pls keep doing this kind of videos (if u wan of course) cause I like them a lot.
Awesome video. One thing i have to say to newer combo pyros is to not avoid the shotguns, i understand hitting flares is cool and you may think shotguns are lame and unskillful but they are really good and really fun to use once you get the hang of it. I personally prefer the panic attack (though i have been using stock way more recently) and I haven't tried the reserve but it seems good so ill give it a shot eventually.
As a pyro who uses the Detonator for combo Pyro, it’s not as bad as it seems. The burst damage is low, but it’s surprisingly good. The midair detonations can help with landing shots if you miss, or ignite multiple people at once. It seems like a bad pick but if you use it in tandem with the axetinguisher or the backscratcher, it’s still a solid pick. The added mobility boost is also really nice, especially if you’re an expert at detonator jump tech. Try it, ya might like it.
Nice video, I see that your editing is good quality and shows that you have extensive knowledge about Pyro. The only thing I would add to it would be talking about the Dragons Fury/Scorch shot combo, it's quite underrated and very powerful. There's a youtuber called Lister that has some good videos about it and I think it could change the meta in the future if it gets more attention.
3:53 "Where with any other secondary, you will just die immediatly (when fighting heavy point blank) Honestly, an underutilized combo that I've seen takes out heavies fairly reliably is degreaser (30~) to flare (90) to axting (100) to degrease (30~) to flare or axting (90-100) while strafing around the front and crouch jumping over and under the heavy is a good way to mess with the enemies tracking, while keeping up the high damage potential if you can get to the heavy before they see you, whether they're revved or not, I have found this is a good, reliable way to kill the enemy gamer
I actually use something similar though I switch out my flaregun for the panic attack just because I can get more damage out of it when I'm already planning to be point blank on a heavy
I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH ON THIS VIDEO But seriously though great work dude it really helped on some viable methods to combo pyro, since i use a more combo defensive playstyle, it helps to know some options that i could use. Keep Up the Good Work!
Before watching this video, I played the Backburner and the jetpack on Pyro. I had barely positive K/Ds and only on a good day would I get a domination. After watching this video, I equipped the Degreaser, Panic Attack, and the Homewrecker (I love having my Pybro moments lol). The first game I joined, I finished it with four dominations and an MVP. Thanks Pirateer! 🔥
This is such an incredible video ! ! I've always felt so bad when I heard people talk trash about degreaser + stock shotgun so it's nice hearing about it here lmao. Instant sub, making me wanna play more pyro now!
I'll have to try some of these out. I normally don't do a lot of comboing. I've been using my stock flamethrower and scorch shot/shotgun depending on if I need spam or burst damage. It might be time to learn flare gun and panic attack combos.
Finally. Someone who knows that the Reserve Shooter is useable on pyro. I am quite fond of the weapon (although I mostly use it on Soldier). But the benefits you listed perfectly sums up why I like it. Fast switch speed, doesn't have the large bullet spread, and situational mini-crits. The missing 2 clips does sting at times though. Anyways, very good video! I dont play Pyro often but I always enjoyed the offensive/combo playstyle. For a while I thought Pyro was a underwhelming/weak class, but watching this makes me wanna play him more. :)
I got a video idea for you. I would really love to see a pyro vs pyro guide. I remember when starting out I thought it was just about who held m1 harder, but now I know there is a lot of stuff to talk about there an I think it could help players with that mentality. stuff like picking your fights with airblast, abusing lingering flame particles around corners, the different unlocks, how to use them and what to do against them, incorporating trickstab esc movement to get out of the flame stream for a couple ticks, flaring/axing, when to airblast in a pyro duel, the importance of movement especially against shotguns, element of surprise, overheal, high ground, reflecting flares, sliding flame particles on walls through tight corridors, controlling healthpacks with airblast, I am sure you can think of something else too, I think it would make an interesting video and I would love to hear what you have to say about it.
Ah yes the combo pyro, it never occurred to me that the shotgun + degreaser was a combo pyro, but i think it makes sense Also i remember i try to change meele very often: -Powerjack has to be thr best one because of movility -I started using the backscratcher brcause people say it's actually a good weapon, and i is, but you get very slow healing from meds and dispenser, so it's more for those pyros that usually run arround alone -the axetinguisher is kind of a fight for me, most of the time i used it i only get like 1 kill with it because you rarely finish off enemies, and that 20% less damage with it is rrally dangerous at times Nice video anyway! Loved the take on the 4 pyro's playstyle, and also, dragon's fury + panick attack is a reallu great combo for dealing with heavys too, because if you land your fire rings right, you can really hurt the heavy and finish him off with the panick attack if you want
Glad to see reserve shooter pyro getting some love in 2021. It's not the facemelting powerhouse it used to be, but it still turns up salt levels on enemy soldiers and demos, who already hate you if you're airblasting well.
Thanks so much for the excellent video! I like the sound of a 'Round Analysis' video since I think consistency over an entire match is the most important skill for winning as any class. I'd also love to hear your thoughts on how pyro fits into casual team composition. When should I choose pyro?
Will definitely look to upload that kind of content soon, perhaps after my next video coming in a few days (degreaser vs stock)! In casual I mean you can pick whatever you want, Pyro is a jack of all trades and you can pick different loadouts for different situations. Need mid-range burst damage? Use shotgun, maybe flare gun. Pull off flanks on some stong enemy snipers? Try detonator, powerjack, backburner, thermal thruster, etc. Facing a lot of projectile spam? Stock flamethrower, detonator/scorch shot to remove stickies, etc. Lots of spies? Homewrecker, stock flamethrower etc. Pyro is a class that makes a good team better, supports his team, but can also be played as a decent power class in casual, or a decent flanker, or a good support class, etc. If you're stonewalled by several sentries or getting killed over and over, try a different loadout and different playstyle, if it doesn't work then either play safer as a support-style Pyro or switch to a power class/pick class depending on what you need. Demo/soldier to kill sentries and engi nests, sniper/spy for picks, scout for flank control, heavy for close and mid-range power damage and uber pushes, etc Hope this helps
I'd use stock over the Degreaser as I feel like the faster weapon switch doesn't very much come to play as I use the panic attack as the secondary for my offensive loatout and don't feel like it's sacrificing a few airblast isn't worth it for as I'm a relativity a new pyro-main who just hit 100 hours on the game. I'm not the best at airblasting and need all of the chance I can get to deal with soldiers or demonman or help putting out teammates on fire. Great video and I'm really looking forward to you next video!
The two other things you can mention about flares is how it is good if you are not used to stop and reload and also one of its more forgoten weakneses: water.
Another note with the reserve shooter. It actually minicrits people who are launched by reflected projectiles as well! this is only really good to style on people.
Yeah I noticed it in one of the clips, and made me think that this weapon is actually WAY underrated, the more I use it the more I think it's actually pretty strong, might do a video going into more detail about it in the future
I’ve been playing a lot of pyro recently and I think the most enjoyable (and satisfying) version of combo pyro is flank pyro but with flare gun, degreaser, and axtinguisher to get the jump on someone and axe them into oblivion (or use flare gun)
I rscwbtly found a balanced (atleast for me) loadout for pyro, stock flamer, scorch shot and powerjack. The stock flamethrower lets your airblast more, the scorch shot is very good at offence, finishing off, and blocking someone who's chasing you. Powerjack is very nice for mobility (Altough the bullet vulnerability is a nuisance) and you can also gain some health in critical moments.
There is a combo with the scorchshot and the dragon fury, you can stun enemies and then attack with the dragons fury at full damage, this attack also can knockback enemies and practically instakill light classes
I use the degreaser because the switch is better, after burn kills feel cheaty and also mine is strange
@thcirblueerf Assuming you even have an Engineer, and assuming he even builds a dispenser at all.
ive used the degreaser so much every time i use stock i struggle with the slower switch speed, but whatever you prefer works best
Stock is by far the best flamethrower, you can do all the combos just the same including flare punch enemy pyros. Degreaser also neuters your after burn damage in exchange for giving combo pyro training wheels. Good pyros don't need the degreaser or its downsides
I love your use of smitten I rarely see it, like, ever
Once you learn pyro combos, every play style of his becomes way more fun
i know can consistently combo rocket and panic attack on soldier thanks to combo pyro
Facts
its like learning Spanish then learning French
Easy to learn, hard to master. Is that accurate for Pyro?
@@mitzuriki Yes. Soldier too.

Personally, I would only recommend using the Axtinguisher if you're running a low-damage or utility secondary like the Detonator, the Scorch Shot, or the jetpack because the Axtinguisher provides burst damage for finishing targets off. @@ink3487 dragon fury + scorch shot + axtinguisher is really fun

I don't think utility based doesn't apply to the scorch shot. The scorch shot is too easy to use to rack up damage.
I like blending together the combo and flank playstyle, using the detonator as a flanking tool, and the axtinguisher as my combo weapon
about the homewrecker, please make sure to get the spy and let the engineer deal with the sapper if he's around
Also use the airblast to get the spy away from the sentry and use the homewrecker

Honestly, an underutilized combo that I've seen takes out heavies fairly reliably is degreaser (30~) to flare (90) to axting (100) to degrease (30~) to flare or axting (90-100) while strafing around the front and crouch jumping over and under the heavy is a good way to mess with the enemies tracking, while keeping up the high damage potential
if you can get to the heavy before they see you, whether they're revved or not, I have found this is a good, reliable way to kill the enemy gamer
I actually use something similar though I switch out my flaregun for the panic attack just because I can get more damage out of it when I'm already planning to be point blank on a heavy
I certainly don't miss the times when every pyro and their mother would use that specific combo
So many small but so good TH-camrs appearing lately
man these vids are so good im starting to play pyro more
I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH ON THIS VIDEO
But seriously though great work dude it really helped on some viable methods to combo pyro, since i use a more combo defensive playstyle, it helps to know some options that i could use.
thank you so much man! this guide has been so helpful.
Thank you for making this video
I finally know how to do basic for combo pyro thank you
This is such an incredible video ! ! I've always felt so bad when I heard people talk trash about degreaser + stock shotgun so it's nice hearing about it here lmao. Instant sub, making me wanna play more pyro now!
i think it got nerfed & thats why
I'll have to try some of these out. I normally don't do a lot of comboing. I've been using my stock flamethrower and scorch shot/shotgun depending on if I need spam or burst damage. It might be time to learn flare gun and panic attack combos.
I smell an underrated channel
Nice video gamer, keep up the great work 👍
you are so underrated, but so wise damn. you earned yourself a new sub :]
Love ur videos man keep up the great work!
I got a video idea for you. I would really love to see a pyro vs pyro guide. I remember when starting out I thought it was just about who held m1 harder, but now I know there is a lot of stuff to talk about there an I think it could help players with that mentality. stuff like picking your fights with airblast, abusing lingering flame particles around corners, the different unlocks, how to use them and what to do against them, incorporating trickstab esc movement to get out of the flame stream for a couple ticks, flaring/axing, when to airblast in a pyro duel, the importance of movement especially against shotguns, element of surprise, overheal, high ground, reflecting flares, sliding flame particles on walls through tight corridors, controlling healthpacks with airblast, I am sure you can think of something else too, I think it would make an interesting video and I would love to hear what you have to say about it.
you make the best tutorials, thanks!
this extra heplful, returning to tf 2 and been enjoying pyro very much but not too sure what to do with them, so this gave super nifty insight
Ah yes the combo pyro, it never occurred to me that the shotgun + degreaser was a combo pyro, but i think it makes sense
Also i remember i try to change meele very often:
-Powerjack has to be thr best one because of movility
-I started using the backscratcher brcause people say it's actually a good weapon, and i is, but you get very slow healing from meds and dispenser, so it's more for those pyros that usually run arround alone
-the axetinguisher is kind of a fight for me, most of the time i used it i only get like 1 kill with it because you rarely finish off enemies, and that 20% less damage with it is rrally dangerous at times
Nice video anyway! Loved the take on the 4 pyro's playstyle, and also, dragon's fury + panick attack is a reallu great combo for dealing with heavys too, because if you land your fire rings right, you can really hurt the heavy and finish him off with the panick attack if you want
pyro is a class that i least played. thanks for this video, mate
I'm not the target audience but the frags made me stay. well made guide and pleasing to watch
Thank you for the tips keep up your hardwork
this needs more views fr
Loving these videos
Thanks so much, i just traded for a degreaser and a flare gun and I can't wait to start comboing
Why I love the panic attack, I get actually useful afterburn, more airblasts, *and* a quick switch speed.
i find it hilarious how at the start he destroys that charmer's chapeau spy named 'all pyros are gay'
Amazing video dude! I learned so much and I feel like I have gotten better at pyro cause if you thanks!
6:28 it made me laugh so hard when your medic jumped with the enemy spy
came across you in a pub recently and was convinced you had reflect hacks, youre insane brother
Dragon’s fury+ scorch shot is actual hell on earth
Demo/soldier to kill sentries and engi nests, sniper/spy for picks, scout for flank control, heavy for close and mid-range power damage and uber pushes, etc
Hope this helps
Good content! I’m tryna main Pyro so this is really great! Thanks!
i love detonator jumping into axetinguisher it's so fun
Great video! Also nice clips!!!
Another note with the reserve shooter. It actually minicrits people who are launched by reflected projectiles as well! this is only really good to style on people.
Yeah I noticed it in one of the clips, and made me think that this weapon is actually WAY underrated, the more I use it the more I think it's actually pretty strong, might do a video going into more detail about it in the future
scorch shot is underrated for combo pyro
you can actually kill heavys with the double flare from the scorch shot + axtinguisher,it's amazing
I’ve been playing a lot of pyro recently and I think the most enjoyable (and satisfying) version of combo pyro is flank pyro but with flare gun, degreaser, and axtinguisher to get the jump on someone and axe them into oblivion (or use flare gun)
Absolutely perfect video, where were you when i had 50 hours on pyro?
Playing Overwatch before it died lmao
this large variety of playstyles is actually pyro's biggest strengh but nobody really talks about it
Wtf is a this a skilled pyro player with actually good opinions on the class and its unlocks? Blasphemy!
