I have discussed this with the folks at Remington. The levergun was harder to make than they anticipated. The scraped the old tooling, bought modern CNC machinery, and had a long learning curve getting the Marlin right. They are improving.

I bought a Marlin 1894 SBL in 44 mag just 2 years ago. The quality has definitely improved since the new ownership. By far my favorite rifle!

Was shopping for a lever gun, saw Jurassic World and took posession 1 week later. Beautiful rifle, excellent quality, a work of art as well as quality weapon. 300 or 405 grain shoots a clover leaf ar 50 and 100 yds. Added a Leupold silver scope for these 62 year old eyes and this has become my show and tell rifle. Maybe a little showing off at the range but this really is something different.

+shooterkirk Heh heh...it's the big daddy in my cabinet...gets the same reaction every time I get it out :"PHWOOOAR! CAN I HAVE A SHOT?"
I was amazed at the accuracy when shooting 300gn Federal factory rounds.
My mates call it the 'pumpkin chucker'. It really is a beautiful rifle.

BTW, this is awesome to finally be able to watch videos of Jeff. I've been reading his reviews since either late 2000 or 2001, I forget which.
TH-cam is great as part of the process of vetting calibers/guns you may be considering for purchase.

Also, I have a Marlin 1894 .45 Colt (standard model with 20" round barrel, NOT the Cowboy version) made in November of 2010 bearing the "REM" stamp on the barrel that I presume designates a post-buyout Marlin, and I'm quite happy with it, with only a very small gap on the underside of the tang with the wood inletting, but everything is tight, smooth, and accurate.

It is both. It was originally a black powder cartridge, when black was the only powder available, but the 45-70 made the transition to smokeless along with most other cartridges in the late nineteenth century. However, still today, many shooters prefer black for long-range competition.

Henry makes a beautiful accurate rifle. I love mine and wouldn't trade them for the world, but don't underestimate a Marlin. The 336 is one of the best rifles ever made. Same goes for the .45 .70 Marlin models. The side loading aspect is key. Great video!

  • @Gunblastdotcom

I agree, but it is getting better. The fit and finish are not as good as it was thirty years ago, but it is improving over what it was two years ago. Hopefully, they will get it right. I have a meeting with the Marlin folks next month, and we will discuss this topic at length.

Thanks for all the excellent videos, they are very informative. I got my 45-70 guide gun 2 years ago and am in love with it. Where we hunt there is a lot of heavy bush so its absolutely perfect. I am very happy with hornady lever rev. ammo because its got more than enough power but I do wish that we could get some buffalo bore or grizzly ammo.

Chronograph data is listed in the referenced review.
2357 fps ten feet from the muzzle translates to right at 2400 at the muzzle. I chronographed the data myself. Buffalo Bore claims only 2300 from an 18.5 inch barrel, and 2350 from longer barrels, but that is conservative. My test lot of ammo gave 2357 ten feet out, with the conditions shown.

Like that vest boy... I've been riding a street bob since they came out, like the plain vanilla look of them. That rifle is good bear medicine if they show up near the house. Had a problem with one several years ago, we had young children staying with us at the time, and they of course liked to play outside in the woods. Wish I'd had one of these and been on the safe side. :-)

I was wondering about scout scopes. everyone saying there better for quick target aquisition but they have a much smaller field of veiw. do you find them quicker on running game etc? can you shoot well with them at longer ranges. are there any disadvantages over the standard eye relif scopes. im lookin at putting one on 30/30 for hogs and being able to shoot ocasional comps with the xs sight same as on the rifle your reviewing. Any info is apreciated

Hello Gunblastdotcom, I just recieved my 45 70. I called Cabelas close to home, asked if they had any in stock, they said no. I then asked if they could check the directory of all the stores. They said ok, checked and found 8, I asked for just one store. Called the store, checked if they had one, asked for them to hold it, gave personel info, then called Cabelas close to home. Asked for them to contact the Cabelas that had the rifle, they did and in two weeks I got a call to pick up

I bought a Marlin .450 back a few for possible grizzly in my tent. However I thought I might like to hunt with it but it jumps very bad! 6" at 25 yards with the hornady evolutions. Sight dropped on barrel at lowest setting. Think a scope has enough compensation? I am thinking of getting a slip on recoil & jump reducer. Ammo seems to be only hornady available. Any ideas?

Or should I just go pre-2009 before they went to assembly lines? One last question, do you know of any leather stock shell holders that would be good for storing 6-8 rounds of 30-30?

Hi, I got a few questions, if ya got time to answer them. I'm lookin into gettin a marlin lever action for hunting/survival situations. But I don't know much about them. I'm think I'm set on gettin a marlin, but can't decide on a caliber. I've heard good things about 30-30 and 45-70, but I'm also interested in the pistol calibers also (.357, .44) but I want enough stopping power to take Down a bear, but I also want range and accuracy. Any suggestions would be of great help. Thanks.

How's the recoil compare to say, a 30-30, 308 or 30-06? I realize the ammunition you use makes a difference, but can you get relatively light loads for whitetail deer?

  • @AreThereNoMoreNames
    @AreThereNoMoreNames 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The .450 Marlin can push a little more energy, since it's a straight walled case with a smaller bolt head, there's less bolt thrust, and the case sticks in the chamber a bit more under pressure.
It's pretty much what a high-performance .45-70 should be, at least in Marlin's eyes.
Oh, and the extractor is a little bit better on the .450s I've seen, too, since it doesn't have to go over a .6" rim and still fit inside the receiver.
Any .45-70 load data or bullet is good for the .450, too.

When training a little with it i saw that it shot better after a while. It takes a little time to get used to the type of recoil it gives i think. I still think red dot sigt is perfect for griz and boar. Its fast if you dont want to use open sights. Or laser at night of course, laser/flashlight.
