At that time, the Brazilian Championship was much stronger than it is today, with several very high level players spread across the various clubs on the south-southeast axis.
At that time the state leagues are more important than the national championship. Sao Paulo and rio de Janeiro championship were the most important tournaments at those time.

This 1970 World Cup has two little-commented curiosities:
1º) Brazil and Italy were eliminated in the first phase of the 1966 World Cup in England and four years later, the two were disputing the final possession of the Jules Rimet cup in Mexico.
2º) The Brazilian team of 70 broke a 20-year curse in world cup finals, whoever scored the first goal lost the final.

i do believe if italy hadnt played an elite west german side ( and they had less rest that brazil anyway as it was a later match) and also played rivera from the start with mazzola they'd have made more of a game. 2 other notes, anastasi, who was world class, missed the finals with an injury just a month before and i believe romeo benetti should have been called up for this world cup as he had his breakthrough season at sampdoria. would have been put on pele for sure. This italian side was better than this performance showed.

@@Luckymag-if4dw Italy matched Brazil in the first 45 minutes...Riva went close twice. Even at the start of the second half Domenghini almost put Italy 2-1 ahead. The game started to turn 6-7 mins before Gerson's goal.

And there are still people who have the audacity to compare Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi with Pelé. Pelé created almost all the moves they use today, he was totally ambidextrous, strong as a bull, acrobat, intelligent, king of assists. He was everything CR7 and Messi are at the same time without any of their weaknesses and ended his career at 32. CR7 and Messi still play older than that and have none of his achievements.
Chill pill please, Pele was the best there had been and achieved greatness, I watched the final live on TV and have always been a fan of Pele. Maradona, the cheat is the next level and generation after Pele, but Messi is without any doubt what so ever the most skillful, technically complete and greatest footballer of all time. The 4-1 scoreline did not do Italy justice. They played really well but the Brazilians kept their heads. Match could just easily made it to extra time or even penalties. Fair play to Italy for putting up a fight. But its called the "Greatest Team" for a reason.

The commentator should at least do his research; Brazil did NOT knock the holder England out of the competition at the quarter-final stage - that was (the then) West Germany. Brazil beat England 1-0 in the group stage. After all, this commentator had about 50 years to do that research and we have Google now...
