They also had to travel to Puebla to play another first round game, then to Mexico City for the semi-final and final. They played 120 minutes against West Germany just three days before the final. A gruelling schedule. We arrived in the final on the brink of fatigue. You can see it in the game. We were equal to Brazil in the first half. In the second half, after an hour, we fell away and that's when Brazil scored the three goals. But Brazil deserved the trophy. The best team at the 1970 World Cup and still the best side I've ever seen.

    • @NC7491
      @NC7491 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am sorry, it doesn't look modern at all. Players make a ton of mistakes that would be rare today, they touch the ball 4-5 times before they pass it which just doesn't happen today, there's no pressing high up the pitch, their physical conditioning is worse than today and they probably play with a libero in defense instead of keeping a straight line. A mediocre modern team would probably beat either of those teams handily. Looking at those games, exciting as they may be is a reminder of how football has improved in every facet.

Germany knocked out Italy in Euro 2016 only through penalty shootout (1-1 after 120mins), and I would also say the Italian team in 2016 was one of the worst in its history.

    I was 2 or 3 years old back then, but my father (may he rest in peace) told me that this was the greatest football match that he has ever seen... and he also lived long enough to watch the TOTALLY EPIC 2014 final match versus Argentina.

    Quite honestly, the speaker has no idea of football. In addition to mispronoucing the names of many players, he mentioned the possibility of a penalty shootout if the game ended in a draw, when in 1970 this option was not available. If the match ended in a draw after extra time, lots would be drawn.

      Well spotted! Yes, penalty shootouts didn't start until later in 1970 - maybe this match pushed the authorities into making the change. The 1968 Euros semi between Italy and the USSR had been decided on coin toss.

    • @FernandoFernandez_192
      @FernandoFernandez_192 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, penalty shootouts were introduced formally for the 1978 WC, though they were not needed in that tournament (they would've only been used in the final).

      In FIFA world cups knockout stage matches before 1978, there will be a replay of the game 2 days later if a game finished in a draw after extra time.

      It is certainly described as such these days - but I am old enough to remember watching the match live.
      And most of the first 90 minutes were rather dull, with the Germans toiling to break down a solid Italian defence.
      It only came alive in Extra Time.
