I am so glad to finally be back on TH-cam making Attack on Titan content. It's been a long time with a lot of setbacks, so I hope the Bertolt video was worth the wait. Though I have a very special announcement to make because the SeaTactics channel now has an editor, and he edited today's video. If you want to know who this person is, it is my community member FaterMoon and I'll be leaving a link to his Twitter. From now on he'll be handling the editing for my Attack on Titan videos and another as-of-yet announced series (OwO what's this?). Please welcome him to the channel and pray as well, because you never know. 👉 twitter.com/FaterMoon
You got it hella wrong that Berthold stopped caring about reiner and annie. He just knew that armin was lying and he even abandoned the plan of transforming in the air. Instead he checked on his friend because it's more important to him than the mission. He saved Reiners life with giving him time to lay down.
Bruh just make this just to hate on a character 😅 probably a armin fan well bertholdt og colossal titan >>> armin the manipulator stolen colossal titan all day!!
A lot of people really don’t like Bertholdt, but personally I’ve always really liked him. He’s been put through just as much hell as everyone else, but he isn’t as vocal or edgy about it. And he portrays a very important message in the story: that no side is in the right, and at the end of the day everyone is just doing what they have to do. Him, Reiner, and Annie all worked towards the same goal, and they all regretted it. But what else could they have done? The world is just that cruel.
I also don’t blame him for being the way he is. He’s a traumatized kid who’s unassertive, underdeveloped and hadn’t figured himself out yet. It’s realistic.
yeah riener zeke pieck Marcel porco bertholdt Annie they are put to that mission look at there backstories you can see riener and zeke running they both got behind others and some soldier yeld at them told them to stop running bertholdts dad is the cause bertholdt to become a warior
"I feel like, no matter how all this plays out, I can accept whatever happens. That's right, nobody's in the wrong. There's nothing we could do. Because this world...is just...that cruel." - Bertholdt Hoover, the perfect Marley Warrior
**Anime/Manga Spoilers** That’s actually his most important line in the series. There’s a strong theme of fatalism in aot. And it’s actually confirmed through eren that there is linear timeline that is predetermined. Bertholdts realization has dual meaning. The second being that the events that transpired were inescapable. Eren ends up with the same sentiment and I’m pretty sure repeats something similar in the final chapters. Bertholdt was a glimpse at the overarching theme of aot and a peak at future eren.
There is no argument to be made that Bertholdt is a pathetic character. Not only is his Titan the mascot of the series, but he is by far the most competent warrior who isn't a nihilistic psychopath. Bertholdt is repeatedly put in poor positions by others, whether it be Reiner, Zeke, or even the cruel world. He never loses compassion for his comrades, that is a flat out incorrect statement that is outright not supported by the manga or show. He abandons the plan to try to save Reiner, and then salvages what he can realizing the DIRE SITUATION they are in. His demeanor at the conclusion is simply a realization that it is either the warriors or the scouts and he has made the decision to live and fight for them. In fact, Bertholdt is shown to be the one who actually cares the MOST about his comrades. Growing incensed when Armin talks about torturing Annie and repeatedly saving Reiner who outright nearly gets them all killed on multiple occasions. Bertholdt even gives an entire speech about how the scouts friendships were important to him and were not a lie. Literally none of the other warriors would have given that speech. And as for Bertholdt's skills, there are few if any characters in the series as well rounded and talented as he is. He made it with the warriors as a marksman (we never get to see him utilize this), was said to be one of the best omni directional gear users, and straight up was able to fight Mikasa in hand to hand combat... a feat no character but Levi has accomplished. The man is a beast, even when you don't consider his considerable - and in some ways unmatched - use of the colossal titan.
You failed to mention how Bertoldt is basically a dark reflection of Armin, a kind, tender person who can think outside the box and dislikes conflict. The difference between them is that one fights against his will, while the other one is fighting for something he believes in and that makes them seem leauges apart when they're actiually two sides of the same coin.
They are very obvious parallels, Always loved the duality of Aot especially Armin who's story weaves perfectly with Eren, Erwin, Floch, Jean, and Bertholdt.
You mean the guy who's the strongest and smartest warrior? The guy who's able to go head to head with Mikasa(who's an Ackerman basically a superhuman) in his human form? The only guy who was way more mature than any character on the show even after the time jump. He knew eldians weren't wrong and neither is he for being forced by Marley to do all the horrible things for his father's health. Keep it moving bertholdt is one of the best characters in the show.
This video really shits on Berthold since many things were simply not mentioned and you just made him look way worse than he actually is. His development was really good honestly and he did have a goal. In season 4 reiners mom even mentioned how proud Bertholds father was and he kept talking about Berthold untip he died. Berthold also always saved reiners ass. Also we know why he sleeps the way he does and anime cut some things
Only thing you got wrong is that Bertholdt actually does have a purpose. 1. To complete the mission and go back to Marley 2. He joined the warrior program so the Marleyan government can buy medicine for his father, and when he died they stopped prescribing his father medicine You can dislike how Bertholdt is used and his meek personality. But he found his resolve at the end of it all, and was one of the first characters to talk to the audience about how both sides aren’t necessarily wrong the world is just that cruel. And also keep in mind he’s like 16. Great video though!
Wait how do you know why Bertholdt joined the warrior program? Pieck joined for her father but Bertholdt never stated why exactly he joined. Also he was 17 but close enough
@@TrungTH1190 Yeah true but I've googled it and nothing came up. I think something about it would come up if it was in the manga. And people would talk about it.
I love his character! I think he's very understandable given his situation. And i gotta say Bertholdt didn't abandon Reiner, he threw the plan to stop and help him, so I don't really get that part. If anyone was abandoned, it was Bertholdt.
Bert being abandoned was so forced by Isayama. As if Pieck wouldn't try to snatch him from Eren. The result would still be fine: if Bertholdt dies (it's not even that easy to eliminate a shifter, and not enough time for Eren to cut his whole head), at least he'd get a quick death. Someone as smart as Pieck would immediately fear that Paradis might have the means to steal the Colossal, especially when its government kept the Founder for a century...and even without that thought, she'd fear the enemy might give a horrible end to Bert, or even try to interrogate him via pain. She'd want to try everything to rescue Bert, or let him die in the attempt, since he's doomed anyway. Levi was still far enough, and she can jump on Eren and run away at the same time. Even more frustrating how Levi's gas ENDED right on the same moment! God that part was so forced, just to have Bertholdt's life end at that point to Armin's plot armor that allows pants to survive steel-melting heat and falls from high altitudes smh.
Bertoldt is actually my favorite character. His death speaks to the tragedy and flaws of his character so perfectly. Bertoldt decided his own fate the moment he accepted that the world was cruel and couldn't be changed. It's only fitting then that the man with dreams of the sea and a better tomorrow got to live on and inherit his titan; that such destructive power might be used for the betterment of mankind.
Bertholdt is not a pathetic coward. He lacks initiative, and doesn't like to be a leader---which is fine. Since Reiner took the leader role. And let's remember, this guy kicked Mikasa, and prevented her assassinations, and actually put up more of a struggle with her, than anyone in the series. So he can actually be intimidating, he just doesn't, which is also fine. If Bertholdt had the Armoured, Eren would lose all the fights, if you look at his struggle against Mikasa, and considering he does know how to fight. With his size, reaction time. So your video is not only wrong. But the explanation is simple, he isn't a leader, or initiator. He's a perfect soldier, and right hand man. How can you give a guy who needs Zeke, like Eren, a pass. When he's just more worse than Bertholdt? When Bertholdt was a actual good soldier - unlike Eren. A man who could beat Eren and have Mikasa do more extra work to even get a scratch on him. And a good friend, in the moment, was competent. Which does he can be a ringleader, but decides not to, as that isn't his character, or personality. He's nothing more than a good friend, right hand man, and a good soldier. Which I explained.
When I randomly got this video on recommendation and when I read the title and saw the thumbnail...man....I was like'This is fucking bullshit!'..so I wanted to search for a comment which was justifying bertholdt and I found it.
Armin literally behaves like Bertolt in the final season, all undecisive, and does the same things as him, yet no one gives him shit, just because he's overdramatic, unlike Bert. Bert's goals are literally the same as Annie, but people forget because he's a neglected character. As Annie said, weak willed people who get swept along with the flow should be considered human too. Unlike Annie and Reiner, he did his job correctly and did NOT teach his enemies how to fight. Don't get me started on Annie's lack of resolve to deal with Armin. And people still act as if Bertholdt was the one acting like that. Besides Bert was still young and raised in a horrible enviroment that dehumanized him. He was still trying to figure out his desires and didn't know what personality he could've have. And frankly, if I wouldn't bother to develop ambitions and personality when I know I'm just a war tool stuck into an internment zone, doomed to be a soldier for my remaining 13 years olf life. Bert did nothing wrong, he's just neglected and given too little, which is disappointing. Eren on the other hand....he's just a fool.
“No one gives him shit” idk fam, Armin got a LOT of shit for being “Talk no jutsu” instead of actually making a resolve. You haven’t seen enough “Erwin Vs Armin” discourse and it shows.
@@Limptastical exactly. A lot of people are team Erwin. At least from what I saw. And the shit on Armin is huge. I think Erwin's death was well done and he probably should stay in s3 and I couldn't care less about Armin but it's fine he is still around. I'd love to see Bertholdt in s4, tho..
@@Limptastical Dude, I've seen A LOT of Erwin vs Armin arguments. But those fans are Yeagerists. When I say "no one", I only mean the common animeonly fans and non-Yeagerist manga readers. The hardcore Yeagerists hate 97% of the cast, so I don't include them.
Facts, Bertholdt was far too wasted of a character with such potential, and his last minute Character development was a glimpse into what could've been. Like, his last 2 episodes we FINALLY see what this guy was really gonna be about, and he was no longer nearly as indecisive or timid as he used to be. A shame he died off so soon after that, would've rather he (or Erwin) had lived, not Armin
I feel like they should have expanded more about him because he kind of felt more like a side character and now feels a bit forgotten. But he is actually one of my favorite characters.
2 memorable moments from bertholdt was when mikasa was about to kill him & yet he was able to counter despite not paying attention & never would have thought that he was that skilled. Another 1 would be when he was telling them that they are friends while kidnapping eren as us viewers we were like 'this guy is full of crap' not until we went further in to the story we understood what he was saying.
Bro, remember Ymir face when hearing bertholdt speech? that was literally me, he became my favorite character in that moment, I knew those words couldn't just be crap, all those feelings coming suddenly from the colossal was just amazing. I am really proud I was proven right many years later.
I like Bertolt a lot. I think people who are quiet usually don’t get much love and not remembered well, because most protagonist characters are always gonna be extroverted and be loud with a voice, which is usually expected in most mangas. But what bothers me is the bias between personality types, like introversion isn’t a sign of weakness. And extroversion doesn’t make you more successful or a better character. But it’s actually lacking resolve that is. It’s kinda interesting to me to see the irony between the usual dangerous role of the villain and the personality of Bertolt. So quiet people represent.
And the reason why he didn't react to Annie's supposed torture: because he knew it was bullshit this time. He knew Annie would crystalize. So he didn't bother to act in the name of her, rather acted in the name of the mission.
you seem to forget that he does have a purpose, complete the mission, and get medicine for his dying father he just didnt get enough delving into, and literally is just not dramatic enough yet he acts similar to armin
For some ungodly reason, Bertholdt was my favorite character even BEFORE he was revealed to be the colossal, even in season 1. Don't ask my why, he just is. This is hate and *toxic slander* towards my favorite, and frankly, I'm ready to sue. I'll see you in court. No fr tho he actually is my favorite character, followed by Jean and Reiner. Also shout out to Moblit, doesn't get enough love.
Bertholt's got better resolve than armin tbh and with what happened with s4, armin had enough time to train as the colossal yet chose not to which was really disappointing. Bert used its power wisely.
I don’t agree at all i like his chatacter a lot and it always made me so sad when i saw his death even before i knew the whole story, also he’s a total badass and he can easily kick Reiner’s and Annie’s ass if he found resolve and courage sooner but given what have been sent to do it’s understandable why he was like that.
And Bertholdt had a goal too. He joined the warrior program to get his father medical care for his cancer, which was his goal. Seeing how he has no other family members, in sight. And a hint of financial troubles, which is why he joined the program. To fund his dad's cancer treatment. That his only parental figure, and member
I understand what you dislike about him, and many things here are fair points, but I disagree with your interpretation of him in RTS. Bertholdt never stopped caring about Reiner and Annie. When Armin lied again about Annie in RTS, he realized Armin was manipulating him and using his feelings for her to get him out of whack for the the second time. He already learned from that mistake when they kidnapped Eren, and Zeke himself told both Reiner and Bertholdt that there is no way that they can torture Annie, because if they do, blood will be shed, and she can turn. So it was either she was already dead, or crystallized and they cannot hurt her. She was not a question. As for Reiner, as I see it, Bertholdt ruined the mission for him to have a chance to live. If Bertholdt turned instead of going to warn him in RTS, most of the gang would be dead, they were on ground zero. Bertholdt cared enough about Reiner to warn him, give him a possibility to change positions with the titan for safety. He put himself in danger when Mikasa was there to give him a proper fight as a human too. At the end of the day, Bertholdt was forced by the mission to shift. He gave Reiner time, and even went away from his area when he did shift. No matter where the mission went, he had a job to do, and he would’ve been fed for the next warrior or dead by the scouts if he didn’t do it. He gave Reiner the most he could, imo. I feel like at the end of the day, Bertholdt is a character that realized this world is cruel, but had never gotten to see the beautiful part of it like Mikasa. When he said he was going to end things, he did so thinking it was the best he could do imo - he doesn’t have a choice but fight, he was put into the warrior program since he was very young (likely 5 or so, considering Zeke’s backstory), so if he ends the war with the scouts, at least they don’t have to continue to suffer the world’s cruelty either. I think it aligns better with his character - he doesn’t want anyone to suffer, he said he didn’t want to kill anyone, there wasn’t a true shift in personality, just confidence that spiked from desire to protect people that are important for him (Reiner and Annie) and desire to finish this mission that weighed on him for more 5 years. Both The warriors and the scouts in different ways pressured him to get to that conclusion he only had one choice. It’s worth mentioning that had they won RTS, Zeke said they would’ve proceeded to rescue Annie after (maybe not right away, but Annie’s rescue was left for after. Bert and Reiner fought Zeke about it, after all.) I have no doubt it also weighed on his mind. Overall, I feel like at the end of the day, he was more than aware of the bullshit Marley was on, but like the rest of the warriors, couldn’t go against them because… well, they got his friends and family as possible hostages and other problems. and Bertholdt just didn’t have a similar personality to Annie to voice or show his discontent in other ways. I don’t agree with you that he’s pathetic, but I’d rather say he was chained by his responsibilities and his love for his friends. Anyways, apologies if I came off as rude or if I missed any point you made! It was an interesting video to watch for sure.
I agree with you. In fact, Bertholdt is very talented. He plays Armin buying time for Reiner, and fights Mikasa in a split second... The smartest and the strongest, yet he manage to fight them both in their fields. In the end, I think what actually kills him is his friendship with Reiner...
I think that Bertholdt’s character would have been vastly improved if we got flashbacks in Armin’s POV of Bertholdt’s memories after his death. It would provide insight into his character that we never received and it would have been an interesting character study for Armin as well, seeing how he would react to these memories and how they would affect his worldview
*I consider berthold a good character, it's just that in the anime a lot of content about him was removed, and of course, he was very quiet.* *I respect your opinion obviously, but I would like to clarify that berthold did have a goal, since he also had his sick father waiting for him, but upon learning that his son died he succumbed to his illness and died as well.* *I would also like to clarify that berthold never said that he was not afraid of death, he simply said that he was no longer afraid of fighting and that he accepted the death of his Comrades, I mean... What would you do if a titan is going to devour you alive? You would laugh?, of course not, you're going to scream and beg for help. But the people doesn't understand that... :/*
@@aaaratrik *In chapter 99, page 17 They talk about berthold's father* *Now pieck have the same kind of history, maybe she was lying using Berthold's history*
I believe that no matter how tough you will act in the face of death or how much will you not care about you dying.. in your last seconds you will ALWAYS start panicking. His reaction was realistic.
Seeing that title alone makes me wanna just ignore your point entirely lmao. Not because out of spite or that i like Bertholdt, but because that's the most baiting title ever.
@@TheAeroAvatar spoilers When we already know who actually caused Eren's mother's death, people will still blame Reiner and Bertholdt. They were just 2 frightened kids trying to get through their mission, and taking in trauma, so they don't get killed when they go back home, meanwhile, adult Eren is pulling strings. But no, people must get their revenge for Carla!
@@TheAeroAvatar my point is, it's bs to keep attributing Eren's mom's death to Reiner and Bertholdt when it was Eren himself who did it, so he could give himself the motivation to kill the world. What are you not getting?
If isayama actually wrote a backstory for butthole, he would have been a respected character in the entire series by majority of the fandom, he would have been the "itachi" of this story, but isayama wanted to cramp the entire story in 139 chapters, because 140 & above is the symbol of peace and happiness.
I think the anime cutting parts of his actual story in the manga also ruined his character build-up. I disliked him for being very conflicted, but that changed when I watched the Final season, when other characters experienced inner conflict like he did. His actions made sense after that.
That is a good analysis of the character despising the title of the video and the lines you call Bertolt "annoying" and "nothing". Call him annoying doesn't make sense since he hardly speaks. And not having a goal doesn't desumanize a person, and we can't confirm if he really didn't have one. Actually is obvious for all warriors, they have their goal boils down to give their families a better life.
I like Bertholdt. He's not my favorite character but he's very well written and I have a lot of sympathy towards him. But I also like Gabi and other characters that are disliked by some fans.
bertholdt is underrated and probably my favorite character. it might be because it’s attached to the colossal titan but i think it’s because his character is somewhat relatable. he cared for his comrades to a certain extent and never wanted to actually hurt them as he was doing what he thought was “right”, like you said “product of his environment”. indecisiveness and cowardice in a time of war. i think his character fit well with his titan. the “quiet kid” with the most badass titan that can unleash at any moment
I respect your opinion but *No* Okay but in all seriousness I do believe they killed him when it did seem like he was about to actually start growing more as a character from the shy and sorta silent character. Also ngl he will always be my favorite character
I would be Bertholdt if I was in the AOT world. I just can't hate him, he reminds me so much of myself in how I am in social situations. Watching his death brings back memories of when all my friends turned against me when I was a kid
Personally I always liked bertholdt, his real perosnality is a perfect contrast to what his power is and makes an interesting character that has the power to rule over all but doesnt have any initiative
Rainer strangles Annie - Berthold is silent. Rainer blackmails Annie with Marco's murder, after which she has nightmares - Berthold is silent. Rainer kicks Bert to finally admit his feelings. Everyone: wow, this is love to the grave. Armin has been silent for a whole month about Marko's ODM, which leads to the tragedy of the 57th expedition. Armin says that Annie is a good person. Everyone: wow, these are Bert's feelings, Armin stole his girlfriend.
Bertholt had such an incredible development, and the only first character that realized the truth of the narrative’s conflict way back during “Descent” (3x15). Edit: So Ben, Floch vid when? 😂
I thought the point of Beerturtle is that he comes across as quiet and passive, but even while he is just “following orders”, the act of transformation is not a passive action. He could stop at any point, he could just not transform, but he does. Some people will say that his ordinariness is a reflection of ourselves, and that we would do the same in his position, but the history of war is full of conscientious objectors. People like Bertholdt think that we’re just like them, and that this somehow gives them a pass for the horrible things that they do. “The world is cruel.” No dude, whoever smelt it dealt it.
I wouldn't say he's pathetic, but I do agree he's a coward. I just feel his story was finished too quickly, he had is epiphany too early, and it's impact didn't last very long.
@@SeaTactics What I would have liked to see personally is Reiner and Bertholdt having more time to themselves and fleshing out their relationship. More scenes like them both on top of the wall before the Battle of Shiganshina
As the Colossal Titan being the Icon of this show, they did him dirty, I still love him as a character and although he was a coward, he was one for the right reasons, being that he still couldn't bring himself to kill his friends, think about it, he bottled up all these emotions of guilt for destroying Shiganshina, and unlike Reiner who developed a split personality to cope or at least live with himself, Bertholdt didn't he kept that pain to himself. He is literally the quiet kid.
You say that at a part Bertholt had basically abandoned Reiner, but that's not the case. He was meant to go colossal mid-air and wipe out everyone within the city which would have only left Eren and Reiner alive since they would have been in their Titan Forms and could tank the blast. But when he saw Reiner on his knees, exposed from the nape after taking the thunder spears he ditched that plan in a heartbeat because he was afraid for his friend. He didn't know if Reiner was alive or dead. If he was alive then Bertholt knew Reiner likely wouldn't survive the transformation, but if he was already dead then he had nothing to lose and could have easily just gone airborne again for the transformation. Once he'd confirmed Reiner was still alive he basically bought him as much time as he could in hopes that he could protect himself. He only goes colossal when he's managed to steel himself through his confontation with Armin and simply hopes Reiner managed to move. As for Armin's use of Annie against him, it seems less like it didn't affect him, and more like it didn't work because Bertholt knew it was bait. It wasn't the first time he had Annie used against him, they knew she was his weakspot. But he also says the line "If they actually have her, that is" to one of Armin's threats. The Scouts didn't even have a proper way to deal with hardening effectively, much less the Military Police. So in his mind, the likelihood that Annie still safe was far greater than that of her being tortured or dead. It clearly angered him, but it didn't get the reaction Armin was going for. The two people in the world he never gave up on were Annie and Reiner.
I for one think Bertholdt is an extremely important character, despite his overall irrelevance as a man who wants to be a background character, he is practically the antithesis of the main character, Eren Jeager. Berthold Hoover is likely the single most naturally talented non-ackerman character in the show. He is more naturally gifted than both Reiner and Annie, and controversially I may even say Zeke himself out of the warrior candidates. On Paradis, as a soldier there is probably no named non-ackerman character save perhaps Miche that could match Bertholdt's strength, speed & battle iq. Furthermore, the more obvious factor in his strength is wielding the power of a nuclear detonation at will, a titan form that he mastered on his first ever try. I would like to restate here, that besides the plot-armored ackerman family, Bertholdt Hoover is likely the most naturally talented and skilled warrior & soldier in the entire story. His achilles heel is, of course, his lack of drive & determination. Eren Jeager on the other hand, seems like the exact opposite. He's smaller, not exactly strong or maneuverable, his battle iq is average, and he loses over and over again. This is even reflected in his titan form. The attack titan really has nothing special about it, a jack of all trades master of none, no unique special abilities like nuclear detonation or even a unique appearance, in contrast to Bertholdt's massive, skinless, thick titan, Eren's looks pretty much the same as any other 15m class titan. However, what Eren lacks in talent he makes up for in his trademark determination and will. Bertholdt is an incredibly gifted and completely unique person, but he is meek, shy, and that leads to no improvement as he sinks into the background. Eren is a firmly average, unremarkable person, but he is brash, bold, and that propels him to the very front of the story, as the main character. So at first glance, Bertholdt seems like just another interesting character in an amazingly well written cast of soldiers, but when you dive deeper you may begin to realize Bertholdt's true purpose in the show/manga, he is the opposite of Eren, in practically every way. And that is why Bertholdt will always be my favorite character.
The way I see it, Bertholdt had the intelligence to understand the consequences of his actions, but not the will to break out of his responsibilites to Marley.
Bertholdt is one of my favorite characters. He is clearly the most able Titan Shifter as he was chosen due to his calm and collected manner, mostly because of the destructive power of the colossus, you give this Titan to a hot head like Eren, they would be transforming all over the place. He's intelligent, aware of his surroundings and was top 5 in his regiment, and also fought a Ackerman head on head. Give some respect to my boy
The man was a walking nuke. One that would leave him rather exposed after the initial explosion. He had to be reserved, he couldn’t just use his power all willy nilly. That said, I liked his character - the most meek and obedient but also grew to have his own resolve but ultimately a kid thrown into a war he didn’t ask for. With the titan that easily gets the highest body count in one use - yeah, that power to indiscriminately smite away lives is one that will mess you up if you have some humanity in you. “Is this what you saw, Bertholdt?”
It's crazy because I feel like after all this time, we still know next to nothing about Bertholt's character specifically. We know more about the titan he had than we do him
@@TheAeroAvatar I forgot her name but that one girl that took mikasas scarf. SHED EXACTLY LIKE MIKASA and even mikasas anoyed even though she asks that way towards eren. So ironic.
And he told Reiner put his Titan downward to his nape. He still caresd him, but he was the only mobile marleyan soldier in the walls, so he had to transform. He stiller worried for Reiner, but since he was the only active member moving, he had to fight with his Titan. That's what you get wrong.
Hating on a by far one of the smartest characters pre time skip, he realized how fucked up the situation and how no one was truly the bad guy. My favorite thing about him is how he's bassicly reverse eren. He tells the Paridis eldians that they dont deserve to die but they have to in order for world peace, just like what eren is doing but to everywhere except paradis.
This feels like trolling but I'm triggered so I'll bite. The 3 of them killing Marco happened in the first season while Eren closed the hole in wall Rose with the boulder. So I'm not sure how you can tie that to him being "cold and detached" all the way in season 3 when he was clearly speaking of his internal battle in season 2. IMO his resolve and calculated demeanor in s3 is *because* he cared. Reiner had told him that he needed to take more leadership, so when he saw that Reiner was down for the count, thats exactly what he did. He told Reiner what to do to protect himself as he transformed, he knew that winning the battle between the scouts would mean that they would be able to go and rescue Annie, I mean his last words were literally "Annie; Reiner." He was never not afraid of dying, he had lost to the forest and accepted that this was his fate. Bertholdt was a rock, he had the same internal struggle about the murders he commit and betraying his friends as Reiner did, but he didn't lose sight of what he was there for. I would say that's far from being weak-willed. To say that he is nothing and not a person when he is the first character to start to build the bridge between Paradis and Marley with his "find us" monologue (literally laying his humanity out on the table to the scouts) , way before we even really know what he is talking about, is crazy. He's not my favorite, but imo one of the most pivotal characters of the series. Also so strange to say that all the warriors made the wrong decisions (as small children) that led to their downfall when we know that they were indoctrinated by Marley. This whole thing sounds like you've misunderstood or confused quite a bit of Bertholdt and the story in general in your analysis.
I always thought I kinda saw myself in bertholdt. Just that fact that he's a big dude but is Hella meek. Gentle giant type. We both have a headstrong smaller friend things like that
Well I used to hate him because of how pathetic and ignorant he was, even after he was eaten by Armin I still thought he deserved that…the more I’m into the series, the more I can somehow relate to him and eventually I watched this video as a confirmation,an acceptance of him. Thanks for this video ,the more I think of how I hated him in the past, the more I see myself in his character…
An intelligent and meek person really is the perfect candidate for guarding a nuclear weapon. Also nobody talks about how much Porco sucks. We should talk more about how much Porco and Marcel are the worst.
Hmmmk I have, So many arguing points here. Putting aside how he himself is a victim of brainwashing and exploitation since his upbringing in the internment zone in a nation that made him and other warriors obedient and believed to be devils themselves, nbd, but there is an obvious most pathetic character in this series. Daz. Annie had no effect on his feelings because of his conversation with Zeke. That's not a downplay on his character. It's clear that Bertolt And Reinee, even Annie eventually, understood their actions were unforgivable. But they were, were they even 10? Traumatized and bronwashed when they were made to do the Genocidal bidding of Marley? Who Would be built for that? Who Wouldn't be broken living in a nightmare? The commentary just makes me empathize with him more than I already did.. and, man, who wouldn't be terrified at being eaten up by a Titan? Let alone one from Paradis over Marley? Of course he was detached. Ptsd isn't talked about enough in this show. And to say he's nothing? Jees. His father died in his sleep in season 4. He did have someone to go home to. Then there's Daz who has no brainwashed background, no tragic Genocidal mission he was praised for. He was understandably Horrified, but in context, has got to be the most pathetic; he has no past reason to justify being so pathetic. Of course, to each their own, and I respect your personal opinion
as a bertholdt fan, i can confirm Armin is more pathetic than my boy Bertholdt, former antagonist as crush, scared shitless before Season 3 and 4, and overall should've not been picked (i am raging because Bertholdt died to fucking blondie)
Bertholdt never stopped caring about Annie and reiner, he just learned how to focus. Aren't all the warriors fighting for family? Didn't bertholdt have a dad?
He’s so misunderstood and it breaks my heart… I personally feel like he played a very important role in the story, outside of just being the colossal Titan. Btw this video became quite popular among the bertholdt fans.. but not for any positive reason 😬 I tried watching but couldn’t sit through it because it made me sad lol but along with your research and the opinions of folks in the comments, I hope maybe one day you’ll enjoy and understand his character more. He’s definitely my favorite character by far, followed by reiner and hange 🥰 Thanks for putting your opinions out there and still being open to listening to what others have to say!
Bro neded back story, even one sentence explaining why he joined warior program would be enough. We know motivations of literally all of the wariors except bareboner i Just cant come up With a reason why Such a "nice guy" would agree to participate in all that
Isayama already told us that Bert's motivation is the same as Pieck. To provide medical support for the sick dad (yeah, recycled reason). The only difference is that probably his dad made him join, since a child Bert probably wasn't going to join the Warrior program on his own will like Pieck did for her dad.
I remember thinking in season 2 when they entered the castle-thingy: "Why is Bertholdt still alive?" He seemed like the type of character to get eaten by a Titan lol I guess he did a good job being a traitor
Honestly out of all the characters, Bertortoise is probably the least trope-y or anime-like. He's just straight up like a normal kid you could meet and become friends with at school or something. He might not be the most memorable, but I think that type of contrast it makes with the fact that his titan form is the literal POSTER of the series is real fascinating and kinda funny. Just goes to show that this is NOT a normal series, and your expectations WILL be thrown around at nearly all times. Anime needs more of that stuff instead of annoying over-exaggerations of archetypes.
anime did bertholdt dirty a lil, not making it clear he was a warrior to save his sick father. IMO armin is much more pathetic than bertholdt, at least bertholdt found the resolve in the end and realized he had no choice; gotta do what u gotta do
As you said, he's a well written character and, let's be honest, most people in real life would react to such disturbing events in a way pretty similar to his
His death hit me harder than anyone else's tbh. His lack of reaction to Armin saying Annie was being tortured was because he was reassured she wasn't by Zeke, and even then her name and Reiner's, which he knew both couldn't save him, were his last words. I also don't think it's fair to say Bert was a coward at the end to be afraid of death. I understand it's an anime but he's like 17 being eaten alive by the worst haircut titan, I don't blame him for freaking out.
I think the saddest part about his death is how you can see him smile with relief for a split second when he sees the scouts and asks them to save him before he remembers where he is and that they’re enemies now
Yt recommending me this video feels like them mocking me for having bertholdt as my fave character Edit: hey this is not bad actually Edit 2: okay, this video is turned out to be really enjoyable and I am glad to go through watching it in spite of my trepidation from the video's title. I feel like enough people had talked about bertholdt's father being his goal so I'mma just leave a like here.
Yep, on this channel we like to give things a fair shake as much as possible. I think it's needed in the age of toxic Fandom. I think for me, I tried my to convey that Bertolt was a character I didn't like, but through my research I came to respect. From there I can better understand why he's my least favorite AOT character and through that better learn the character, put my money where my mouth is and learn.
All the Titan shifters believed they had no choice but to "follow their destiny" while in reality it was them making their own dark paths. That's what they all paid the price for, sooner or later. But 1)they're just kids and 2)their entire lives before and after gaining the titan powers taught them that
I am so glad to finally be back on TH-cam making Attack on Titan content.

You got it hella wrong that Berthold stopped caring about reiner and annie. He just knew that armin was lying and he even abandoned the plan of transforming in the air. Instead he checked on his friend because it's more important to him than the mission. He saved Reiners life with giving him time to lay down.
Every Eldian is pathetic… just so you know!
How dare you dog on burnttoast
Thats called moral nihilism sir
I also don’t blame him for being the way he is. He’s a traumatized kid who’s unassertive, underdeveloped and hadn’t figured himself out yet. It’s realistic.
I like Bertholdt
bro in the entire anime he is my fav character it's sad to see him die
yeah riener zeke pieck Marcel porco bertholdt Annie they are put to that mission look at there backstories you can see riener and zeke running they both got behind others and some soldier yeld at them told them to stop running bertholdts dad is the cause bertholdt to become a warior
"I feel like, no matter how all this plays out, I can accept whatever happens. That's right, nobody's in the wrong. There's nothing we could do. Because this world...is just...that cruel." - Bertholdt Hoover, the perfect Marley Warrior
Perfect quote to sum him up!
He wasn't brainwashed anymore
"I can accept whatever happens"
*Armin as normal titan about to eat him*
"GUYS! HELP ME! ANNIE! REINER!" *monched*
@@zellustar2756 he lost his memories and just smiled when he saw eren and the others. Dude he was 17 a child soldier. 😒
Finally, the respect my boy B deserves.
100%
One of the best characters on the show. Beerholdt’s depth is awesome.

@mmonteiro19 bro he is my fav character in the entire show I do not just like him he's my fav of all
@@melsarmiento1365 same i love this bert sm
He was a Levi level threat held back by his confidence
The guy was a prodigy in every field, #3 in ranking and wasnt even trying
Only thing you got wrong is that Bertholdt actually does have a purpose.
1. To complete the mission and go back to Marley
2. He joined the warrior program so the Marleyan government can buy medicine for his father, and when he died they stopped prescribing his father medicine
You can dislike how Bertholdt is used and his meek personality. But he found his resolve at the end of it all, and was one of the first characters to talk to the audience about how both sides aren’t necessarily wrong the world is just that cruel.
And also keep in mind he’s like 16.
Great video though!
That's fair, I do miss stuff sometimes despite my research. Thank you for the fact check, I appreciate it!
Wait how do you know why Bertholdt joined the warrior program? Pieck joined for her father but Bertholdt never stated why exactly he joined.
Also he was 17 but close enough
@@aruxani could be in the manga.
@@TrungTH1190 Yeah true but I've googled it and nothing came up. I think something about it would come up if it was in the manga. And people would talk about it.
@Vân Khánh Dư Ohhhhhh ok then. Thanks!
@@zant527 but it's upsetng like she saved riener zeke coulved saved if it wasn't for levi ughh
You gave justice to bertholdt.I respect you.
I was truly moved by this comment...
When I randomly got this video on recommendation and when I read the title and saw the thumbnail...man....I was like'This is fucking bullshit!'..so I wanted to search for a comment which was justifying bertholdt and I found it.
Bertholdt babies are funny
Eren on the other hand....he's just a fool.
thank you so much for your comment. Finally someone who wouldn't stone me for this.
Exactly he started this show, and his Titan is iconic yet he got no love at all.
I think that first example is a great thing to tell people that Burrito is a TOP TIER soldier. He's that good.
His whole conversation with armin was really impactful
So he didn't bother to act in the name of her, rather acted in the name of the mission.
you seem to forget that he does have a purpose, complete the mission, and get medicine for his dying father
he just didnt get enough delving into, and literally is just not dramatic enough yet he acts similar to armin
Reiner, Levi, and Bertholtd are my faves
W opinion tbh I love Bert man his the best character ever ❤😂
Bertholt's got better resolve than armin tbh and with what happened with s4, armin had enough time to train as the colossal yet chose not to which was really disappointing. Bert used its power wisely.
Yea, if he wasn't traumatized by Marcels death he would have had a better grasp on his emotions and could've been more useful
@@frazerdark I think what causes riener and Annie fighting and rieners split personality and bertholdts emotion is ymirs fault LMAO ymir eats marcel
In the end, I think what actually kills him is his friendship with Reiner...
i don’t think dude who made this vid understood all this lol, didn’t really read up on bertholdt just watched the anime and made a quick vid

But it's such a beautiful number, 139!

I respect your opinion but *No*
Okay but in all seriousness I do believe they killed him when it did seem like he was about to actually start growing more as a character from the shy and sorta silent character. Also ngl he will always be my favorite character

Armin has been silent for a whole month about Marko's ODM, which leads to the tragedy of the 57th expedition.
Armin says that Annie is a good person.
Everyone: wow, these are Bert's feelings, Armin stole his girlfriend.
he's definitely the most humane characters and most realistic model of actual human emotions
Bertholt had such an incredible development, and the only first character that realized the truth of the narrative’s conflict way back during “Descent” (3x15).
Edit: So Ben, Floch vid when? 😂
Hey Bertoldhtloto is not a pathetic character
I don’t really agree with you but you actually took the time to make a video on him when no else does so I respect you
I thought the point of Beerturtle is that he comes across as quiet and passive, but even while he is just “following orders”, the act of transformation is not a passive action.
It's ironic hearing bert being most annoying when my dude has like 4 lines total.
old video and people may have already pointed it out but ... Bertholt DID have a goal, which was saving his father ... who unfortunately died anyway
I wouldn't say he's pathetic, but I do agree he's a coward. I just feel his story was finished too quickly, he had is epiphany too early, and it's impact didn't last very long.
That's a good point, I wonder what would have happened had his character arc had more dialogue and moments spread out.
@@SeaTactics What I would have liked to see personally is Reiner and Bertholdt having more time to themselves and fleshing out their relationship. More scenes like them both on top of the wall before the Battle of Shiganshina
Bruh he literally kickstarted the whole story. But yeah, I do wish he was around more.
He wasn't a coward in season 3
HE HAS RETURNED!
MUAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! MUUUUUAAAAAHHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!
Bertholdt "Armin stole my titan and my girl" Hoover or was it Bert from Sesame Street
Annie had never been Bert's girlfriend.)
We know more about the titan he had than we do him
You got beef with Bertholdt because he taller than you
You're god damn right
Bertholdt is better character than Annie Leonhart by far.
better character than mikasa
That's not a high bar to begin with, Mikasa is just annoying, for being the female lead of the show she has little to no character growth at all.
Facts
@@TheAeroAvatar I forgot her name but that one girl that took mikasas scarf.
SHED EXACTLY LIKE MIKASA and even mikasas anoyed even though she asks that way towards eren. So ironic.
Almost every character is better then Mikasa. Heck some background characters have way more development then her, and she's the dang mascot!
@@TheAeroAvatar Oh heck yeah! They're way better.
Still better than Annie's character
To be fair he was one of the few who could stand up to mikasa and live
And he told Reiner put his Titan downward to his nape. He still caresd him, but he was the only mobile marleyan soldier in the walls, so he had to transform. He stiller worried for Reiner, but since he was the only active member moving, he had to fight with his Titan. That's what you get wrong.
Why is everyone hating on bertholdt.
I understand him, easily, but never judge a book by its cover
Love how you explain man! Keep going!
Appreciate it!
If only you didn’t make fun of his name :D
I finally watched this and you made a good point but 2013-15 jokes about his name is just silly
Blortholt watching armin fizz up a rock in the afterlife must have been hard
We both have a headstrong smaller friend things like that
Gabi is still the most annoying of all, and Annie's the most unlikable.
MID
I clicked on the video because I got so angry with a title 😂 I love Bert's character so much, I named a cat after him
That poor cat
He’s so misunderstood and it breaks my heart… I personally feel like he played a very important role in the story, outside of just being the colossal Titan.
Btw this video became quite popular among the bertholdt fans.. but not for any positive reason 😬
I tried watching but couldn’t sit through it because it made me sad lol but along with your research and the opinions of folks in the comments, I hope maybe one day you’ll enjoy and understand his character more. He’s definitely my favorite character by far, followed by reiner and hange 🥰
Thanks for putting your opinions out there and still being open to listening to what others have to say!
Hopefully one day I’ll grin and bare it bc it’s only fair to listen to your opinion as well 🥸🫣
speedwatcher be like:
Would you of liked Bear-towel more if he thanked Armin for killing him?
...mmmmm Possible! JK, I think Boltic had a great death!
The only difference is that probably his dad made him join, since a child Bert probably wasn't going to join the Warrior program on his own will like Pieck did for her dad.
good to see you back, wonderful video
Thank you kindly! Lots of setbacks, but not anymore!
10:00 he did have a goal, as same as pieck he wanted his father to get medication from Marley
Sounds like Zeke Yeager is next week.
👀👀👀👀
I remember thinking in season 2 when they entered the castle-thingy: "Why is Bertholdt still alive?" He seemed like the type of character to get eaten by a Titan lol I guess he did a good job being a traitor
Bertolt watching this 😢😢
Honestly out of all the characters, Bertortoise is probably the least trope-y or anime-like.
IMO armin is much more pathetic than bertholdt, at least bertholdt found the resolve in the end and realized he had no choice; gotta do what u gotta do
As you said, he's a well written character and, let's be honest, most people in real life would react to such disturbing events in a way pretty similar to his
I think the title actually goes to Daz.
Bertoldt is my favorite character :(
He's one of my favourites as well, I'm still mourning for him ;(
His death hit me harder than anyone else's tbh.
We stan a soft toll boy
@@lochnessymonster4623 I totally agree!
I think the saddest part about his death is how you can see him smile with relief for a split second when he sees the scouts and asks them to save him before he remembers where he is and that they’re enemies now
How is Berthold annoying tho, he is legit the quit kid in that series
Yt recommending me this video feels like them mocking me for having bertholdt as my fave character
Edit: hey this is not bad actually
Edit 2: okay, this video is turned out to be really enjoyable and I am glad to go through watching it in spite of my trepidation from the video's title.
I would’ve said porco or pieck cuz pieck is kinda just there and porco is erens living punching bag
I thought he became a warrior so he could help his sick father
All the Titan shifters believed they had no choice but to "follow their destiny" while in reality it was them making their own dark paths. That's what they all paid the price for, sooner or later.
But 1)they're just kids and 2)their entire lives before and after gaining the titan powers taught them that
I’ve missed you bud hope all is well 💯🔥
You too, thanks for sticking around!
Becoming a human atom bomb has its burdens. Bertolt bared them as much as he could, being a tool of mass destruction is never easy.
