    I have no favorites here, but I do have a couple of observations that make me tend to favor SVB on this one. It's a tough situation for both without a ref to make a decision. At 1:08:26 you can see on the video that Johnny's sleeve is hanging down extremely close to the seven ball as he shoots. I can't tell definitively whether he touches the seven or not. However, afterwards when they are discussing it, Johnny gets down and simulates how he made the shot with his elbow and shirt sleeve way clear of the 7 seven ball (kind of fishy to me). SVB then pushes his arm and bridge hand to a closer position that really aligned with where he made the shot. I don't think we can argue whether he truly fouled. However, I kind of wonder why he was wearing a jacket with the loose sleeves that hung down a little past his arm and wasn't cognizant of that during his shot. It's comparable to someone with long hair letting it hang down on the table or someone wearing a shirt that hangs down in the front. I've seen Johnny in the past very careful about not letting his shirt touch balls he's bridging over, why didn't he do the same here (pull up his sleeve or something like it) so SVB or anyone else was not in question. Just my two cents.

      Archer has a 'win-at-any-cost' mentality, and i've seen him (and Mike Dechaine) pull plenty of crap on others. Unsportsmanlike conduct is his stock in trade. So, i'm glad any time he gets caught and legitimately called when he's wrong. The fact that the call is made by one of the more upstanding players in the game is just icing on the cake, for me.

      @@marginality270 just curious, is the foul because of Archers sleeve touching the ball, or does the ball need to move? Because to me it looked like Archers sleeve may have touched the ball but not move the ball.

      @@bgjb-r1499 Generally, touching is all that's necessary for a foul. (If it's not a WPA-sanctioned event, the tournament director can modify the rules and tell everyone beforehand what different rules they're playing by.) If there's no dedicated referee working their table, as in this case, the players can agree to play "Cue ball fouls only", if they want to. Especially since Archer lied so badly about where his hands were during the shot after he was called out, i'm glad that SVB didn't want to.

    People in here are angry at SVB for this, but at their level, 6-4 is nothing, winner break format, Archer is world class, he can easily run 5 racks for the win. He is also world class enough to know to check your shot before our play. If you watch ANY professional shoot over a ball, they first get down, look down, check the space, get up, step back, realign and get down again. Archer did not do this time, maybe he is just getting old, but he skipped his shot routine. You can not hate SVB for calling a foul. This is his job and if he loses he doesn't get paid. SVB also knows how good Archer is, seeing him make that 2 ball in the side with good draw and shape on the 3 was a big confidence booster that would have lead to him running 5 racks and taking the win, which is also why I think he skipped his routine on the 7 and why SVB called him out on it.

      I think you're right. The tournament director seems to be relying too much on players' integrity. That actually works for most players. But, then you have players like Archer and Dechaine,, who obviously don't have any integrity.

  • @whetedge

    If the rule is "touching the ball", Archer clearly fouled, and his sleeve was touching after the cue ball was launched. Van Boening was within his rights to call the foul. Since the ball didn't move, I would have given Archer a warning and let it go, but the rules are the rules. Archer should have called for a referee. He was shooting well; the match was far from over. It seems he let his emotions take charge, but I guess, who _can't_ relate to that lol. He should have finished the match though, out of respect for the fans if nothing else.

    I'm pretty confused on why people are mad at Shane. If a ref was sitting there the same thing would have happened. The foul would have been called and Shane would have ran out regardless. Johnny has played long enough that he should be capable of paying attention to his sleeves. I've watched numerous matches of his over the last few years where he's been called for his sleeves or shirt hitting a ball. He's a pro. He shouldn't still have the problem if he gives a shit

      it's not as cool to win a match calling a foul on someone for that, but it really should be enforced.
      i hate to admit that i've avoided calling a foul on myself in an "important" match, but one of the comments points out at 9:11, johnny fully aware of himself touching the ball and did not hold himself accountable.
      no hate against johnny, but shane was right to call a foul when he saw it. that's just the rules. and if johnny could have been accountable for himself, he would have called the foul on himself at 9:11. so if someone fouls, it's not like there's no recourse. players either have to call foul on themselves, or they're opponent is allowed to call it like they see it.

    They spent too much time on those diagonal camera angles in this match. I hope it doesn't become a habit. One of the things that TSC has over other presentations is the good camera work (when they're paying attention), without needlessly switching angles too much. Diagonal and table-level camera shots are not useful, in most cases.

      Yes he did, but he hadn't taken the shot yet. He stood up after touching the 6 ball. The opposing player then has the option of leaving the 6 ball where it is, or moving it back to where it was before it was touched. It didn't move when touched, and SVB was okay with leaving it where it lay, so Archer continued on with his shot. There is no foul.
      At 1:08:24, while Archer was getting ready to shoot the 4 ball, his shirt sleeve touched the 7 ball, and remained touching it when the cueball was launched. That is a foul. It's ball in hand for SVB. If I were Archer I would have given SVB ball in hand, but I wouldn't have conceded the match. I would have let it play out.

    • @marshalcraft
      @marshalcraft 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah just a slower rolled, rolling forward shot, with some inside English, and that why that cue ball from this angle appears to pop off the rail as it did. Soft shot, no skid or nothing, let along draw or even stun to get it to drag a moment before it pick up forward. it all feel, just mess with you draw shots and what not.

    • @marshalcraft
      @marshalcraft 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah on that shot with a weak draw shot/stun shot, that drags into rolling forward (also slowing the cue ball down) I feel it would be hard to not get a lot of pop off the 1 ball, because there aint as much forward on it. He don't want to come up table, so he need a lot of forward to ball speed ratio, so minimal pop off the side of the 1, and as much roll forward as possible, so a soft shot, that is geared to the table as soon as possible, rolling nice and smooth, and that roll is the best forward for that type of shot. Harder shot it's gonna pop off the 1 ball and come higher up towards side pockets. May have been strait forward no inside English too. Too hard to tell from cameras some stuff like that, only the shooter really knows what they got on it. But you can guess from the cue ball action, what it had to have been, but if you aren't very good with cue ball, then likewise you prob guessing wronger then others, but that's pool.

The worst thing, IMO, is a hall of fame guy (Archer) conceding the rest of the match. That just seems like he is a poor sport. I wonder how it makes sense to play a professional tournament in a town that small. And the table directly behind Johnny and Shane has a couple of players that, let's just say play on a level substantially lower than any professional player I've ever seen. I played on the APA league from year 1 to year 4 of its existence, a LONG time ago and from what I've seen those two players would have been rated anywhere from a 4 to a 5 and perhaps a very weak 6 if they are having an off day here.
