That bell lore is so damn interesting. I really like the detail that the ornaments on the bell grant the holder perks basically, and then you have to defend it or risk your clan losing a very important defense. I can imagine an absolute unit of a Space Rhino without a bell killing some rich noble with many bell ornaments in some crazy ass underdog fight.

I wonder if Calus's bell was his cup, since the beginning of Calus's encounter is a literal bell-like sound coming from the cup after it's shot out of his hand (it's not likely to be that it was just the bullet ricocheting off the cup making the sound, since the sound only comes as he drops the cup, where if you shot it with an auto rifle it wouldn't sound off without enough damage)

Another interesting side effect of the culture around the bell is that it seems the case that you'd need the bell of your opponent in order to challenge them, meaning that not only does the bell provide a way to depose someone, but the lack of a bell, and therefore the lack of combat prowess, protects the weak that are in power; people that may have been given said power due to their prowess in that area even though it isn't combat related meaning having a seasoned warrior in that position wouldn't be beneficial. Really promotes the idea that the ancient cabal really valued honor just as much as combat prowess.

Its funny how once again, the Cabal aesthetic playing off the Roman Empire, even down the to the words which are for the most part Latin, escpically "Scal'sangus" which can be split into Scal and Sangus. Scal seems to corespond to the Latin word "Sculpta" which means to carve or etch, and Sangus is derived from the word "Sanguinem" which literally means blood. Just thought I share my findings, not that it adds anything I really like the Latin Language.

There is another Cabal tale that talks about this tradition.
It's the story of 2 weaponsmiths, named Dhutus and Gharhet.
Dhutus mined the materials herself, and was a skilled artist. Gharhet was a merchant who became rich off of the weapons he crafted. The two were rivals in competition to gain the favor of a warrior named Tlamus. She was a great warrior, and they wished to use her as a sort of sponsor. However Dhutus grew tired of this, and challenged Gharhet to a Rite of Proving, and to avoid shame, he accepted.
Dhutus waited for Gharhet to arrive, but to her surprise, Gharhet had sent a champion in his stead. The champion in question was Tlamus herself, and Dhutus was slained without effort.

Peasant-mercenaries also appear in our history aswell. Usually as the starting point for groups that later became elite bands. In the utter madness that was the 30 Years War, and the Sengoku Jidai, it was common for a peasant force to be raised as levies only for their lords power to crumble or worse, leaving an armed peasant mob to make their way in the world. I personally love it when we get stuff like this about the alien races. The challenging to single combat with the bell is also tactically extremely wise in terms of troops, rather than whole armies going to war because two warlords have a falling out only 1 will die with the victor gaining honour, respect and quite possibly doubling the size of their army while anyone who refuses this challenge will likely face desertion from their troops for their dishonourable actions. The other point I found interesting was the description of the Cabal Gold which was liberally spread upon conquered worlds so the new "imperial citizens" would be allowed to challenge their conquerors and gain real political influence in the empire. This is significant as it reinforces the Cabal view that they should be ruled by the strongest, but acknowledges that they do not necessarily have to be Cabal. While it is unclear how much influence any "alien" victor would have it is a markedly different situation from most Earth based conquerors who operated under the "we beat you so now we're in charge, do as I say or die" most of the time. Had been really hoping to get some Pre-Whirlwind anthropology history about the Eliksni with Beyond Light but this has been pretty damn good, and I can always hold out hope for Mithrax and House Light...

Years ago, when I learned that Cabal had a aristocracy, I suspected that Cabal society began as a feudal one. Considering aristocrats are most often wealthy nobles and looking at the history of European nobility, its not hard to imagine.

I just noticed something, the Bell lore tab says that after the Red war much of this tradition was forsaken because of logistical reasons (and what's left of the cabal fighting for survival on Sol) could this be the catalyst that allowed Xivu Arath's tribute to be invoked? could the "Honor and tradition" tied to these wars and conquests be what was stopping the god of war from claiming all that conflict as her domain? or is it just because Savathun decided to screw something up again and it has nothing to do with that.

Random Question. Where is Savathun? She was literally behind summoning Xivu Arath to the cabal home-world. I’m sure Umun’ arath was under Savathun’s influence for sometime. Even possibly grooming the cabal for her warrior sister.
