I just had an idea for a new segment in your reviews. Maybe you could make a segment where you focus mainly on effective ways to beat the vehicles you cover? It would benefit both people who have the vehicle you cover and those who don't, since the first group would learn what situations to avoid and others would learn how to effectively deal with those vehicles. Of course I'm not talking about missile warfare since that can be rather hit or miss but I was thinking about dogfighting. I know you mention that stuff throughout the video itself but I think a more concise segment would be a wonderful addition
My favorite plane since childhood when I read a book by my father called Top Gun. Came back to War Thunder 45 days ago after 6 years out and discovered they added the Su-27. So I brought a MiG-23ML during the summer sale and spend 4 weeks grinding this beauty. He cannot BVR properly, but I love to play with him and have 10 missiles. So, I prefer to fly low and "flank" the enemies.
Another great review - thank you Tim! The community seem quite down on the SM, but like you say I find it quite lethal when close in with a low fuel weight. The R27ETs are also still good for the occasional sneaky long range IR shot.
Youre absolutely correct about the radar, Im very disappointed in that and its a far cry from the MIg29 radars. Im not a bad pilot, but Im not at your skill level, I am just getting smoked by aim120s in this plane. If the radar was better, honestly, I wouldnt be having problems in it. the flanker also has moments where when you lock on to a enemy jet the missle dosnt want to launch you get the little green circle that indicates you can fire it (but isnt locked) and then it will turn it off again
The Su-27SM and J-11A would be “fine” if they had radars even comparable to the NATO aircraft. Personally I go 1 ER and rest R77s when I play and launch an ER from 50km away at high flying targets at the start of the game and about half the time get a free kill, remember the ER will reach the target faster than their 120.
Two problems with using the 27ER like that. First is that even if you kill the target, their 120 still knows where it is and where it isn't. Second the opponent can notch or go cold while you're forced to continue closing with the target. The Flanker both needs a comparable radar and better quality ARH's to compete on equal footing with other top tier planes. SARHs, even the 27ER, are in a completely inferior league relative to ARHs in BVR combat.
you need to get your VR legs bro.... push through the nausea and you're brain will eventually re-wire.... I used to be the same as it's quite common, but as with most things in life, the more you do it the more you get used to it. Just.... don't look down when you approach the ground after ejecting, that was the worst moment for me (not afraid of heights, just nausea was at it's worse)
Oh btw tim, id suggested leaving the minimum fuel for jets the same, if they allows players to go lower, the aircraft would have to be nerfed again, they already over perform with only the minimum fuel load, any lower and some will actually brake physics, the gripen with only 2 minutes of fuel, literally cant stall and get stuck, its like it ifnores agravity, ive ttied flying it in other ways, but nope, still no issue.
@alb9229 the only reason they have better range than the R77 is because the ACM on western jets is 19km instead of the 10 on soviet jets. The solution to this is to lock from search mode for long range shots. The Su 27 can still dominate in close range if you purely focus on getting your R73's on target instead of your guns (although it does need an FM fix since it should be much more manoeuvreable)
@alb9229120a is better than aam4 or pl12, which are considered 120c5 equivalents. And the most fun part- it is currently has more range than r27er with a declared range of 130km.
@alb9229 but noone is ever gonna hit an AMRAAM beyond 20km in game. 6-8km is more realistic for when people fire their AMRAAM's. What matters more for the Su 27 is the shitty radar set being fixed along with its flight model.
@@cookiecraze1310 I've been landing 40km hits with the SPAMRAAM when launching from the harrier, and it isn't a supersonic launch platform. I've used both and the SPAMRAAM is just better and it's not even close. Gaijin hasn't properly modeled the drag on the R-77s. The grid fins are supposed to have low drag at supersonic and subsonic speeds but terrible drag at transonic speeds. Gaijin was lazy and has modeled high drag at all speeds, and this has slaughtered the R-77's ability to maintain energy. American bias is STRONG in this game.
the problem with the su27sm is that well.. its uncooked, its flight model is bugged and has 3 times the drag, it turns slower than irl by 4 degrees, its radar should be way better than it is in game because 70% of it is copy pasted, and the r77 which is already hampered by acm's soft 10km limit (it can do atleast 27 with ease) also has a TON of drag because of its wing shape, its fins are good at supersonic and subsonic speeds but are draggy at transonic speeds, gaijin instead makes it so its draggy at all 3 and falls out of the sky the moment the motor runs out, it is for this reason its better to stay away from russian top tier if its your first because its just that bad, sure you can do good, but it takes way more than literally any other nation (all that i said applies to the chinese j11/j11a), for example, the acm mode of an western jet, lets say... f16, is of 19km, that means, that by the time your acm can even lock onto the f16, you are already passed ~half of his range, meaning you will loose every time purely because you lack the range, and even then, if you use the IR trick to get a bigger lock on range, its finnichy, and its still well out of your missile's range

My go to dogfighters are the F-16C and Su-27. The SM is deadly in generic ARB. Hell it's deadly in small map sim battles. Last night was a 14 to 6 kill/death sim slug fest. Lost the battle in spite of my team having a lopsided kill/death ratio simply because Russia doesn't CAS. Russia doesn't CAS in Air Sim built around exactly CAS play. All the F-16C and AV-8Bs were spamming AGMs at ground targets then racing in with missiles to snag distracted Migs and Sus. Normal play for Air Sim. Anyhow. Some maps are more conducive to standoff play and offer only very limited ground vehicle spawns. On these maps, Russia gets butchered. The US and Nato players have no ground targets to shoot so with exception of the rando in the F-4S blapping bases, the rest are hyper focused on Spamraam slinging. Su-27SM or more to the point, the R-77 cannot hold a candle in long range standoff engagements vs a peered vehicle. The x2 R-77 datalink limit vs 6-8 for others is a massive gimp and currently only the Mig-29SMT is propping Russia up in Air Sim. Well that and the fact currently other jets like the F-4F KWS and Grippen are limited to x4 datalinks or missile count as well. ARB is excluded here. I exclude this mode as in my experience, most my battles become clusterfks in 2 minutes where everyone is within pitbull or ARH range of each other so the missiles are active off the rails and don't need datalinks. This style of fighting doesn't count for datalink sniping 80km away. Ultimately, while the SM is certainly an agile and highly competitive jet and certainly better in ARB, it is let down by the datalink limit for true BVR play and the fact in look down mode the radar ignores almost everything but chaff, missiles and friendlies. I've seen a friendly F-16AM surrounded by 4 enemies and all I picked up on radar was the friendly. It feels wrong. I'm not expecting anyone to leak classified documents to prove the N001VEP radar is blind like this nor do I expect Gaijin has the user manual or technical specs so I figure this crap is made up or coded wrong. Probably the latter.

Su27SM is a very good plane, but it does not feel like it belongs at 13.7 due to its HORRIBLE radar. I have all major top tiers, played USA for a bit, then got France, then USSR and China, and now I am grinding the Japanese F15s. American mains don’t know just how GOOD they have it. F15s feel like an actual top tier after spading both the Su27SM and the J11A, specifically due to the radar. Some American planes have better radar sets at or around 12.0 BR and I am not even exaggerating

It's fucking terrible. I love my us top tiers but also have a love for pact fighters, and good God is it abysmal trying to fly the 27BDSM. At least the 29SMT has a better radar
I totally agree with you, I have always liked Migs, but for once WT has gone with reality, because NATO aircraft have definitely had better radar in reality...perhaps in BR13. the "Russian Bias" that has been real is over. Bad for me, because I have those US aircraft but there is something about the Mig29 and SMT I just love, Good Hunting
This thing really is more of a CQC type plane compared to the original in the previous meta lol. Complete 180. It exacerbates the issue of good luck getting close enough to use what you have. The R-77's have let me down on so many occasions... sometimes they surprise me and with the changes that were recently made you can take some pretty nasty close in shots but in general... it's rough playing this plane. Worth mentioning the HMS for the radar is only 10km as well compared to all NATO planes having it at 19km.
Great question. Its generally "whatever catches my interest" but a few things factor in heavily. After a game update, I try to cover the "new hotness" fairly quickly, and before major sales I try to cover a premium or two that I think people might be considering buying. Besides that, I try to keep a bit of variety in the reviews - not covering aircraft that are too similar too close together. Part of this is to avoid viewer burnout and keep things interesting, but I also know that I need to spread out vids I know are going to get a good number of views and not do too many back-to-back that I know won't get much attention so that I don't completely tank my channel stats (which aren't great anyway). If I did four prop bombers in a row, for example, it would probably hurt pretty bad in the long run. I also like to try and pay special attention to off-meta vehicles that the rest of the WT youtuber community tends to ignore (like the SM.92 I covered recently). Grinded for it and so far I am not disappointed. True, aim120 spam is real and you are outranged, but with a bit of thinking outside the box and map awareness you can still secure kills. But its no comparison to F15s thats for sure. For CAS its a just a beauty.
I'd be interested if you've covered, or would cover, the Kfir Canard. I'm really liking some of the high-end Israeli planes, and the Canard is my path to grinding them, but. HOO BOY. It's a doozy, and being 11.3 only really hurts it in my opinion.
If they do, they'll use publicly available information and some educated guesses, the community/playerbase will throw a fit for 50 reasons ("too good!" , "not good enough!", etc) and the in-game versions will waffle around a bit between a few patches.
I actually dread the using the Su-27s because of how garbage the radar is. I have wanted to use them quite a bit in ground rb(was expecting it to be like the F-16C) but I have found them to be quite useless, since the TWS struggles to pick up targets, sometimes locking absolutely nothing, and attempting to hard lock something from TWS often doesn’t work.

I think one of the downside of this thing especially when I compare it with other Aircrafts from for example France and UK is that its radar doesn't work properly ! I'm really having a huge problem with locking on targets while it seems others can lock on me just fine !!! So do you have any recommendition about it?
Its not you, its the radar set. The HDN mode on the 27SM tends to be a little more accurate, but can't target anything at closer ranges. Really, the radar on this thing holds it back from greatness.

never used a quest 2, so I can't compared. I was using an original-model Oculus Rift, and only upgraded to the quest3 when the rift died on me a few months ago.
So basically this plane fits my play style exactly. I’m a ground hugger and normally don’t start launching missiles until I’m within 15km, which is just under the range at which the r77’s go active, so I can just lock, launch, unlock, go cold. This jet is gonna be a blast for me

It does not have a good flight performance, it doesnt stand a chance against: Every gripen Every f16 Every f15 Every mirage 2000 The only things it beats in dogfights are the F4 ICE and, like, the Tornado F3 late

I'm only ever confident in the R-77 scoring hits if I launch them hot off the rails within pitbull range. Meanwhile I'm racking up kills in this event with the harrier with subsonic launches at 40km by yeeting them in the general direction of the enemy tomcats with only inertial navigation to guide them for most of the trip. We can't make apples to apples comparisons with the AIM-120 and the other ARHs because the AIM-120 is so much better that it is in a league all its own.
The sm isnt actually all that bad if you know how to actually use it. The only true downside is its crummy radar and it being a heavy fighter. But there are still other ways to beat a light fighter like maneuver kills or good teammates

I must agree partially. My tornado IDS MfG clapped a su 27 in a close end dogfight. And the tornado is an abyssmal dogfighter. But having to fly at tree top level is because of the missile spam meta(gaijin you fucced up). And sim players are caring about the cockpit
No, the Su-27SM radar has issues. The regular Su-27 has a different set. My personal hunch is that they have some bugs with the 27SM that aren't fully worked out, and you can see clearly for yourself a few times in the footage I used how the radar floats around a bit and struggles to lock targets that should be easily bracketed up.

While you hold an stt lock on a single plane, I'm already cold with 4 Phoenix tracking themselves

Su27SM is a very good plane, but it does not feel like it belongs at 13.7 due to its HORRIBLE radar. I have all major top tiers, played USA for a bit, then got France, then USSR and China, and now I am grinding the Japanese F15s. American mains don’t know just how GOOD they have it. F15s feel like an actual top tier after spading both the Su27SM and the J11A, specifically due to the radar. Some American planes have better radar sets at or around 12.0 BR and I am not even exaggerating
Kind of just a real life skill issue tbh. Russian radars are simply inferior to their American peer equivalent

I totally agree with you, I have always liked Migs, but for once WT has gone with reality, because NATO aircraft have definitely had better radar in reality...perhaps in BR13. the "Russian Bias" that has been real is over. Bad for me, because I have those US aircraft but there is something about the Mig29 and SMT I just love, Good Hunting
This thing really is more of a CQC type plane compared to the original in the previous meta lol. Complete 180. It exacerbates the issue of good luck getting close enough to use what you have. The R-77's have let me down on so many occasions... sometimes they surprise me and with the changes that were recently made you can take some pretty nasty close in shots but in general... it's rough playing this plane. Worth mentioning the HMS for the radar is only 10km as well compared to all NATO planes having it at 19km.

Great question. Its generally "whatever catches my interest" but a few things factor in heavily.
After a game update, I try to cover the "new hotness" fairly quickly, and before major sales I try to cover a premium or two that I think people might be considering buying.
Besides that, I try to keep a bit of variety in the reviews - not covering aircraft that are too similar too close together. Part of this is to avoid viewer burnout and keep things interesting, but I also know that I need to spread out vids I know are going to get a good number of views and not do too many back-to-back that I know won't get much attention so that I don't completely tank my channel stats (which aren't great anyway). If I did four prop bombers in a row, for example, it would probably hurt pretty bad in the long run. I also like to try and pay special attention to off-meta vehicles that the rest of the WT youtuber community tends to ignore (like the SM.92 I covered recently). I go into a little more about this in a vid I posted a while back "How I make my vehicle reviews", and also discuss my evaluation process, where I get my historical info, etc etc.

Grinded for it and so far I am not disappointed. True, aim120 spam is real and you are outranged, but with a bit of thinking outside the box and map awareness you can still secure kills. But its no comparison to F15s thats for sure.

I'd be interested if you've covered, or would cover, the Kfir Canard. I'm really liking some of the high-end Israeli planes, and the Canard is my path to grinding them, but. HOO BOY. It's a doozy, and being 11.3 only really hurts it in my opinion.

If they do, they'll use publicly available information and some educated guesses, the community/playerbase will throw a fit for 50 reasons ("too good!" , "not good enough!", etc) and the in-game versions will waffle around a bit between a few patches.

I actually dread the using the Su-27s because of how garbage the radar is. I have wanted to use them quite a bit in ground rb(was expecting it to be like the F-16C) but I have found them to be quite useless, since the TWS struggles to pick up targets, sometimes locking absolutely nothing, and attempting to hard lock something from TWS often doesn’t work.

I think one of the downside of this thing especially when I compare it with other Aircrafts from for example France and UK is that its radar doesn't work properly ! I'm really having a huge problem with locking on targets while it seems others can lock on me just fine !!! So do you have any recommendition about it?
Its not you, its the radar set. The HDN mode on the 27SM tends to be a little more accurate, but can't target anything at closer ranges. Really, the radar on this thing holds it back from greatness.

Also may I ask you to make a video regarding how to evade both Radar and IR missiles (maybe each need a seperate video guide of its own). because while there are many videos regarding this topic ,but people seems to fail to realize that each Aircraft and on each different situation need an specific technic in order to evade missiles and simply notching or ground hugging do not always work. I really need to know how Pro-Players like you avoid missiles.

never used a quest 2, so I can't compared.
I was using an original-model Oculus Rift, and only upgraded to the quest3 when the rift died on me a few months ago.
It has worst radar, mid fight performance and ok missiles.
Main issue is flight performance
Its missiles are subpar beyond the ones meant for close range fights, but its flight model desperately wants to avoid close range fights.
So which is better for top tier su27sm or mig29 smt

SMT honestly, but only carries 6 missiles
If you can manage with a very mediocre radar, then Su-27SM because 10 missiles
SMT has a good radar, only bad HMD range, also, pretty good flare/chaff count

So basically this plane fits my play style exactly. I’m a ground hugger and normally don’t start launching missiles until I’m within 15km, which is just under the range at which the r77’s go active, so I can just lock, launch, unlock, go cold. This jet is gonna be a blast for me

There was never a 27ER meta. It was low altitude Fox-2 spam before this patch with the AIM-9M being the meta missile, and now it's SPAMRAAM spam.

Every f16
Every f15
Every mirage 2000
The only things it beats in dogfights are the F4 ICE and, like, the Tornado F3 late

@@TimsVariety It's just a problem with the AIM-120 being so grossly superior relative to the other missiles. I'm only ever confident in the R-77 scoring hits if I launch them hot off the rails within pitbull range. Meanwhile I'm racking up kills in this event with the harrier with subsonic launches at 40km by yeeting them in the general direction of the enemy tomcats with only inertial navigation to guide them for most of the trip. We can't make apples to apples comparisons with the AIM-120 and the other ARHs because the AIM-120 is so much better that it is in a league all its own.

The sm isnt actually all that bad if you know how to actually use it. The only true downside is its crummy radar and it being a heavy fighter. But there are still other ways to beat a light fighter like maneuver kills or good teammates

IMO the best way to describe russian planes right now is that they have missiles that desperately want to be used in knife fights but radars and flight models that desperately want to avoid knife fights at all costs.

I must agree partially. My tornado IDS MfG clapped a su 27 in a close end dogfight. And the tornado is an abyssmal dogfighter.
But having to fly at tree top level is because of the missile spam meta(gaijin you fucced up). And sim players are caring about the cockpit

No, the Su-27SM radar has issues.
The regular Su-27 has a different set.
My personal hunch is that they have some bugs with the 27SM that aren't fully worked out, and you can see clearly for yourself a few times in the footage I used how the radar floats around a bit and struggles to lock targets that should be easily bracketed up.
