First time I saw the movie, I called the twist that Te'Ka is Te Fiti like right when Te'Ka showed up. I deeply related. And Moana's song "Know Who You Are" spoke to my SOUL 😭😭😭😭😭
Not *all* of them. A good number were primarily written by the other songwriter, Opetaia Foa'i, and a few aren't original songs. The song at the start where baby Moana finds the stone is an older song. It was written by Foa'i in the early 2000s in memory of 19 young girls who lost their life in a fire at a secondary school in Tuvalu. The lyrics were rewritten for Moana, but I feel like the sad undertone remains and I always cry a little. I think it's a little sad that Miranda seems to get all the credit for the Moana soundtrack when he was one of two songwriters and one of three composers. Because Miranda is more famous, the Samoan songwriter who did such an amazing job gets no credit.

I heard a really good theory and want to share it: The grandma could have died become of Moana. So she(the grandma) was find the entire time but right after she give it to Moana she died the hart gives life. So what if it was keeping her alive.
One of the things I love about this is the only character not voiced by someone who' Pacific Islander is the chicken. Everyone else in the voice cast is Hawaiian, Polynesian or Maori.
As a Pacific islander myself when i was able to watch it with my moyher when it first came out i was so happy to see how happy she was that our culture was being represented :)
9:17 LOL true😭 But did you know they actually did this on purpose, this is the language spoken on the island of Tuvalu, one of the oldest languages in Polynesia. As time goes by the language is not spoken as much anymore, so they sang this song in Tuvaluan on purpose, so disney wouldn’t try and translate it to English
Rukiya there are some behind the scenes facts about the film; first off it was originally going to be hand drawn animation but changed it to cgi instead due how to animate ocean waves in pencil is difficult. Moana was going to have older brothers but changed it to only child, and Tomatoa was going to be a headless giant however it’s difficult to communicate with a headless giant so they changed to coconut crab instead because in Pacific island cultures coconut crabs viewed as signs of superstition. Well anyway if are interested in folk tales that Disney films are based on look no further than Jon Solo’s Messed Up series and prepare yourself for a shock of your life for the folk tales disturbing original depictions made by storytellers of old.
Hey Marc! Oh, that's cool! I’m curious to have seen what the film would have looked hand drawn.🤔 But I’m glad they went with CGI because the water flowed so beautifully. Tomatoa is one of my fav characters and arguably had the best song ✨shiny✨, haha. Thank you for providing me with info on the film. I always appreciate it❤️

I think I just noticed something else about the movie. All of the past chiefs placed a stone on the mountain, to represent the safety of the people by staying on the island(like in the song lyrics "you can find happiness right where you are). When it's Moana's turn, instead she puts a sea shell on top, to represent her now guiding her people across the sea like they used to.
I’ve never been so happy that Disney made a movie based on Polynesia! I’m Tongan and seeing all the Maori, Tongan, Samoan references including the haka made me so happy

I love, love, love Polynesian singers. Archaeologists discovered that there was a period of centuries during which the Polynesians basically stopped sailing as much. No one knows why. That was the inspiration for this movie, which is a fable for why that happened. Moana is voiced and sung by an inexperienced young actress. Why does the mentor usually die? Read about the Monomyth or "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell.

I was upset as well that Pua wasn’t the sidekick because in all the trailers it was always the pig! But then it was Hei Hei in the movie and I’m like sigh..alright. But Hei Hei did their thing lol
So the thing with the pig and the rooster was that the directors knew that Pua was a source of comfort. And since Moana is on a large journey, having Hei Hei in a way taught Moana endurance on her journey. Or something like that. I don't quite remember
20:34 that is not what actually happened Firstly, when they say "demigod" in context to Polynesian/pasifika beliefs, it's not so much as "child of a god" but more "supernaturally-gifted person, godly or otherwise" (being a mistranslation/misinterpretation of the term "kūpua" in Hawaiʻi) In the Maori version of Māuiʻs origin, he was born to a mortal woman, Taranga, who already had 3-4 sons. But Māui was born prematurely so, fearing he wouldnʻt live long, Taranga cut off her topknot (her "tikitiki") and wrapped the infant Māui in it and sorrowfully cast him to the sea. The gods found him and nursed him, raised him, and trained and taught him the secrets of the gods. When he was still a young man, he was sent back to his family where his adventures really began and was given his proper name of Māui-tikitiki-a-taranga (Māui in the topknot of Taranga) In Hawaiʻi though, Maui wasnʻt even abandoned. He was believed to have been born to another woman, Hina, who got pregnant when she found and wore a red malo (loincloth) on the beach that belonged to the chief Kalana (derivative of "Taranga", there's a bunch of cultural similarities/overlap in a lot of places) and much like Taranga, Hina already had a few sons of her own (all named Maui as well) and named this last child Maui-a-kalana (Maui of Kalana) in some versions, he was born from an egg since he was associated with roosters. In either version, he was raised alongside his brothers and had many adventures involving his family a lot: - his snaring and slowing of the Sun was so his mother had more daylight to finish working on and drying her kapa (barkcloth) - he involved his brothers in paddling their canoe while he was fishing out the islands from the sea - when discovering the secret of making fire from the stingy mudhens, he had his brothers prop up a body decoy in their canoe to make the birds think Maui and his brothers were out at sea and wouldnʻt interfere when he was actually waiting to ambush them and learn their secret - a Hawaiʻi legend says his mother was trapped in her cave home by the moʻo (giant lizard) Kunaloa, to which he had to rescue her from - another version of the Sun-snaring story says he had a sister who sacrificed her long hair to make a rope/net strong enough for him to trap the Sun in So yeah, Disney kinda messed up his origins/family a bit
10:42 @Rukiya Reacts if you want a real explanation, then it's because when Walt Disney was starting to be successful, he bought his parents a house in California. His parents died in the house, he put the death of parents or a parent/caretaker as a tribute to them. After Walt's death, the creative team continued that trend as a tribute

At least, thatʻs how I read this scene
Dang! I never realized that before😱
That’s romantic- jk lol
Finally I read a comment explaining what that dance was about. I was sure it probably referenced Polynesian culture
Whoa...
I LOVE THIS MOVIE 🥹 ! as a Polynesian myself who comes from the Islands of Samoa, Cook Islands, and Tahiti, it brings so much emotion seeing my cultures and all the other Pacific cultures on the big screen. It warms my heart frfr ! 😆🇼🇸🇨🇰🇵🇫 !!!
My family mostly consists of Samoan . USOS 4 LIFE 🇼🇸🇼🇸🇼🇸
I heard a really good theory and want to share it: The grandma could have died become of Moana.
I love learning about different cultures so much! This is definitely one of my favorite movies.
And lil bacon how she calls hm! SOOO ADORABLE
Anyone else want a in-disney-universe crossover between Moana & Atlantis? Just me? I need to see Moana and Kida together
Ouuu that would be fun!!
@@RukiyaReactscan you react to Lilo and Stitch if you haven't?
That would be great @@guestplaylist9177
Yep
@RukiyaReacts
The fact that she's vibing every 5 seconds to everything is just making me put leds and vibe with her
As a Pacific islander myself when i was able to watch it with my moyher when it first came out i was so happy to see how happy she was that our culture was being represented :)
I always appreciate it❤️
@@RukiyaReacts you’re welcome, Rukiya if you’re interested to see Disney’s animation history look no further than Animation Lookback: Walt Disney Animation Studios+ this is a reboot of the original Lookback back in 2009 and it’s released on its tenth anniversary.
pretty sure this is 3d animmation, cgi is different
20:49 “the woman was too stunned to speak” I must have played that part like 100,000 times
I love how the creators did some research on Maui, they made him a fearless trickster like in the storys (I’m from New Zealand so this is what I know about him from the book over here) 16:30 I like that he did a Haka here too
I love, love, love Polynesian singers.
19:51 BYE THAT EVIL LAUGH-

That made me laugh
About the The Rock Fatigue, I think he's cool on Jumanji. He's more dorky geeky cowardly so it's a nice change.
YESSSS I WAS WAITING for you to do this, a sad, inspiring, magical, MONUMENTAL and truly beautiful movie one of my favorites and the queen, the moment, you is reacting to it I am also recovering from a cold but I am expecting nothing less than singing and BEATING THE TUNES UP like you should 😂 I love you though and this movie is my entire soul
Too the water I go!!! I’ll probably edit this later 😂❤
The queen? The moment? Me?? You’re too kind, thank you😭🥹❤️
Even when sick, it’s a crime not to sing along to the hits in Moana, haha. I’m so glad you enjoyed my reaction.🥰
The reason why grandma found it because it was keeping her alive but now that the heart is in the actual place that it needs to be in. She is dying and she doesn’t have the heart to keep her alive anymore😭😭😭😭🥺🥺🥺❤️
The fact she makes the movie ten times better by just talking even tho shes sick! She needs a oscar ❤

Moana is a beautiful movie and you have a great singing voice!! 🌊🐚💗 Loved that you called out the Rock’s character and the giant crab as Leo’s too funny.
I would say my faves are definitely Moana, Brave, Frozen and Luca so far. Hope Disney keeps doing animation! Phenomenal songs they’re all bops.
I've seen all the movies you listed except for Brave.🤔 I think I'll make that one of the next Disney movies I react to. If it's one of your faves, then it must be good!💕

I love how she's enjoying all the music and I'm here watching on 1.5x speed....😅
3:17 “GRADMA RLY SAID IM TRAUMATIZING YALL”😂😂😂
7:45 when I saw in theaters as a babeh, I was easily confused, so I thought he was literally HER😂😂
I think I never thought of that but funny😅😂
20:34 that is not what actually happened
Firstly, when they say "demigod" in context to Polynesian/pasifika beliefs, it's not so much as "child of a god" but more "supernaturally-gifted person, godly or otherwise" (being a mistranslation/misinterpretation of the term "kūpua" in Hawaiʻi)
In the Maori version of Māuiʻs origin, he was born to a mortal woman, Taranga, who already had 3-4 sons. When he was still a young man, he was sent back to his family where his adventures really began and was given his proper name of Māui-tikitiki-a-taranga (Māui in the topknot of Taranga)
In Hawaiʻi though, Maui wasnʻt even abandoned.
In either version, he was raised alongside his brothers and had many adventures involving his family a lot:
- his snaring and slowing of the Sun was so his mother had more daylight to finish working on and drying her kapa (barkcloth)
- he involved his brothers in paddling their canoe while he was fishing out the islands from the sea
- when discovering the secret of making fire from the stingy mudhens, he had his brothers prop up a body decoy in their canoe to make the birds think Maui and his brothers were out at sea and wouldnʻt interfere when he was actually waiting to ambush them and learn their secret
- a Hawaiʻi legend says his mother was trapped in her cave home by the moʻo (giant lizard) Kunaloa, to which he had to rescue her from
- another version of the Sun-snaring story says he had a sister who sacrificed her long hair to make a rope/net strong enough for him to trap the Sun in
So yeah, Disney kinda messed up his origins/family a bit
8:12 girl I literally need to watch my niece listen to this song many many times;-;

I see you girl bopping to that music 🎉😂😂😂😊
10:42 @Rukiya Reacts if you want a real explanation, then it's because when Walt Disney was starting to be successful, he bought his parents a house in California. His parents died in the house, he put the death of parents or a parent/caretaker as a tribute to them. After Walt's death, the creative team continued that trend as a tribute
23:45 yes, girl you go get that villain 😂😂😂
Fun fact: I was in a production of Moana jr a couple of years ago, and I played Te Fiti/Te Ka. I had the ugliest te fiti costume ever, but a really cool te ka mask. Anyway, I love this movie and its characters
