    Thanks so much! Now I won’t be afraid to WEAR my beautiful and precious Hermes scarf, that my husband purchased for me on our trip to Paris, for fear I might stain it! I will enjoy wearing it and properly caring for it. Out from the beautiful orange box it will come!

    I've always handwashed our Hermes and other silk scarves, as well as fine cashmeres, in lukewarm water and Woolite or a similar liquid soap. There is nothing to it. Can't understand why people are scared of it. Soak for a while if needed, don't scrub with anything other than a soft horsehair brush, don't rub hard, don't wring, rinse well, dry hanging open (cashmere knits must be laid out flat on a towel), steam-iron gently on a silk setting - I don't even use a pressing cloth, I just make darn sure the plate of the iron is squeaky clean.

      The older Hermes scarves run a lot easier than the newer ones.

    I love it. I have been washing my silks since forever. Even my blouses. Lately, I wash my silk scarves and hold them in front of the fan for 10 minutes until they're 90% dry and then iron them. This works beautifully! If the colour bleeds a little while in the water I add a step of rinsing it in cold water with a handful of salt to fasten the colour ( for about 2 minutes) and then rinse in clear water and hang.

      @maryokeefe5351 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. The salt water stage is critical to avoid colour running.

    Do you avoid pressing tge hand rolled edges?

    • @maryokeefe5351
      @maryokeefe5351 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The corner of the scarf should be lightly pinned down. Then iron with the grain of the fabric, holding each section firm. Move the pin as you proceed around the scarf. Never iron a rolled hem and most dry cleaners will.

  • @maryokeefe5351
    @maryokeefe5351 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for this. Another entire video could be dedicated to pressing the hem area. Yours was buckling a bit close to the hem. Other experts recommend pinning the corner of the scarf to the ironing board cover and very carefully ironing next to the rolled hem. This is the finishing touch. I would also recommend letting the finished scarf dry completely (e.g. 48 hours) prior to replacing it in its box. Tips learned from an elegant French woman.

    I bought a silk filled comforter and 2 silk pillows in China 5 years ago. I finally got brave enough to air them out in the clothes dryer but I did not have dryer balls. The silk in the comforter bunched up. I've been able to stretch out the silk a little. I'd really like to return it to its former glory. Any hints?

      I've some Hermes from my grandmother ie very vintage, and more modern ones. All are hand-washed by me, and I can truly say I've never had a problem but for one vintage scarf of very deep teal which ran slightly. I've been washing mine since I was a teenager and it's so much better than chemical cleaning. Be brave!

    I have a silk blouse by Joie that has an old oil stain about the size of a pencil eraser. Is there any hope of getting a set oil stain out of silk, and if so, would I use the stain stick and horse hair brush as shown in the video? Thank you so much!

    • @patricrichardson6350
      @patricrichardson6350 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will come out, but you will probably need an oily soap like archipelago spot remover first, then soap and a brush

    • @wendyholdenpierrepicot5473
      @wendyholdenpierrepicot5473 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For any oily stains, just press in some baby powder i to them, let it sit for a few minutes, and brush it off with another fabric or soft brush. They will lift right off! This works best on silk, on other fabrics you might need to do it a couple of times!

    Wonderful video! Thank you so much, I just discovered you and love what you do! Are there any issues with washing a silk georgette? I can't remember where I read it but I remember noting that water will change the hand and appearance. I have a piece that needs some stains removed, the label says it's dry clean only and not to wash it but I also don't have any non toxic dry cleaners near me so I'd almost rather chance it at home. It's a quality piece, a lovely printed kaftan and I don't think the colors will run. Anyway, I'm a fan, looking forward to seeing more!

    • @robinmackillop4821
      @robinmackillop4821 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just saw that you are going to answer questions on TH-cam so in the event this ends up in a video I’ll add that the stain is fresh, it’s a little tomato and oil. I blotted it with a dry napkin and then a little water at the restaurant and put baking soda on it at home. And just researching to see what I can do myself/hopefully save a dry cleaning trip. Thank you!
