I have 2 questions for a newcomer to IL2. I don't think i have ever seen of or heard of 109s having leading edge slats before, and seconly, are you fighting computer spawned enemy, or other online players? Thanks.
My personal faves of the 109s are the E-4 because of the wing guns and the G-6 because of the gun pods what can I say besides that I love me some more dakka.
I watched an interview with an old British BoB fighter pilot. He said that they didn't worry about the Me109's being higher than they were (higher service ceiling) as they felt that if the germans wanted to fight they had to come down to where they were. I guess the fighters were more focused on downing the bombers anyway.
"Baiting" the germans lower remained a proper strategy even by '43, if memory serves. In James Edgar Johnson's book there is a fight mentioned, where a group of Spitfire Mk.IXs flew underneath a group of Fw.190s (or were it 109s?) waiting for them to attack. And it actually worked out in the end.
I just heard today the top 3 German aces all flew 109’s and had over 900 take downs between the 3 but also 10% or so died on landing takeoff so it wasn’t so great at that.
That's largely because US didn't allow aces to be on the front lines and were sent back to train newer pilots. The Germans had no choice, they had to send out whatever they had and had qualitative degradation overtime as they started to loose their aces.
Man...may have to look at getting this one. I have DCS, but can't play it until I can upgrade my RAM and graphics card...but looking at the specs for IL-2, my pc can run it as is.
In DCS how does VR work with respect to the obscure cockpit switches you need to throw? But many went the PointCTRL way as it's an improvement over grabbing the mouse.
Imagine how stressful this sort of combat must have been. Being in a B-17 and not knowing whether you'll ever see home again. They (bomber crews) had the second highest casualty rate out of all services out of all armies in WWII. The highest casualty rate was among German submariners, my grand-uncle having been one of them, a Lt. on a German U-Boat. Never returned home and he knew that before he left on his first and final combat mission.
Hey great video again GS. I recently got into il2 and I'm wondering if anyone has any tips regarding their preferred control setup or anything they think is helpful to know.
As a kind of minimal hardware I recommend a joystick with twist axis (rudder) and a head movement tracker: that tracker helps immensely allowing hands to use more controls and less fiddling around trying to spot stuff, especially vital when dogfighting. I use a DelanClip head tracker and freeware tracking software, mid-level price for great performance once you survive the setup process. Graphics settings are fairly easy to experiment with even during flight. Generally V-sync eats some resources but eliminates screen tearing and obviously mirror, shadow and anti-aliasing quality are not essential if your PC is struggling to keep up. Most of the settings offer a small explanation what they do once you hover cursor over them. Camera settings matter quite a lot, experiment to get proper ones for your control setup (and likely tick "head shake" off, easier to at least start without it). I am not a master of the game by any means, simply tutored a few friends into it so feel free to toss questions when they arise and I might be able to assist.
@@forlornfoe thanks. Much appreciated. I've been using my mouse to look around and a cheap thrustmaster joystick for flight control. Also my mouse buttons control rudder. I'll definitely look into head tracking
@@sethlaporte7140 I too used mouse for looking, took me 8 years to get into head tracking and never looked back. Far as I know, there are three major options for head tracking systems and probably more niche makers I have never heard of. The most popular head tracker is likely TrackIR, which uses its own software. I have heard them working well and being easy to use, with minor hiccups like occasionally not registering a head movement correctly. Generally TrackIR is the most expensive but also easiest to use choice. Then comes DelanClip that relies on freeware software like Opentrack. The setup took me maybe 3 hours to get running properly (mainly Delanclip's camera being picky about USB ports and then Opentrack not finding that camera). After slogging through the setup, that system has worked flawlessly for half a year. Price-wise DelanClip is in the middle. For going very cheap, modified camera and signal sender (just 3 infrared lights on a stick) can be home-made and then simply coined with freeware software. I was too lazy to research this properly and just bought a set.
I know it would kill the immersion but would be nice to have some videos with throttle settings etc so us noobs can see what you are doing with engine.
True that it helps newcomers but thinking of throttle as percentages is not very good in the long run. In the case of Bf109 and Fw190, keep an eye on the a.t.a meter on the right side of gunsight: I think that model's average sustainable a.t.a is up to 1.1, GS was running the engine mainly in combat power (up to 1.3).
@@Pfandflasche yes that why it put “etc” in the question , so he could show prop/mix and manifold pressure. But if GS just has combat power all the time then probably no need.
The only downside of the bf109, is it's range, it was a formidable dogfighter but in the battle of Britain it only had a 30 minute window for attacking before it had to return back to base
@@leroter5941 In Poland and later Russia it was a absolute beast, but it was somewhat outclassed by Spitfires and Hurricanes by tech and design, but a large factor for the Messerschmitts effectiveness being blunted was by pilot fatigue.
@@brbrdeng9122 Even in the late periods of the war the Bf-109 was still a very serios opponent, especially the latest versions. And just as a reminder, the Bf-109 was designed long before the outbreak of World War 2. So it was WAY older and still got a very good reputation.

Would like to see a comparison, say: you in the 109 vs hawker hurricane with the hurricane with an energy advantage...
Could the 109 win?
Gs you should do a campaign series on a particular plane. That would be pretty amazing
You should make a new Air Combat Basics video with WW2 planes
Great video !
I can't see behind even it's all open, cant turn my neck that much in vr. :D
@Growling Sidewinder what 109 realisation do you like more: Il-2 or DCS?
Great video
I see you favor the oculus rift these days. Did you get away from HP Reverb G 2?
I know it would kill the immersion but would be nice to have some videos with throttle settings etc so us noobs can see what you are doing with engine.
True that it helps newcomers but thinking of throttle as percentages is not very good in the long run. In the case of Bf109 and Fw190, keep an eye on the a.t.a meter on the right side of gunsight: I think that model's average sustainable a.t.a is up to 1.1, GS was running the engine mainly in combat power (up to 1.3).
The german fighters just have the manifold pressure to look at. Not that hard to remember two or three ata-limits.
@@Pfandflasche yes that why it put “etc” in the question , so he could show prop/mix and manifold pressure. But if GS just has combat power all the time then probably no need.
Brilliant indeed, gets my tick in the box.
Might be better for me than DCS to be honest.
The only downside of the bf109, is it's range, it was a formidable dogfighter but in the battle of Britain it only had a 30 minute window for attacking before it had to return back to base
Depends where it fought, it got outflown by spits and hurris as well. So you can't generalize it.
What source is the audio in the intro from?
Could you play the La-5? The base one
Can you do tributes to aces? With IL-2 content a bit of history, and gameplay would quite cool, at the end of the day just more gameplay.
These videos are so cool :)
What program are you using to record and share from IL-2?
